  • This study investigates the shear lag phenomenon existing in the shear wall of the wall-frame structure. Elastic analysis of such structures is carried out using a 3-D frame analysis program. The structural parameters governing the shear lag phenomenon are wall height and thickness. The analysis shows that the overturning moment due to external lateral load is resisted by both of the shear/core wall and the external frame. Severe unstable stresses are identified in height ratio of about 0.7 The taller or thinner wall shows the smaller shear lag phenomenon.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of column spacing and beam size on the lateral displacement and shear lag phenomenon in bundled tube system. According to the parametric study in which the spacing of columns, the size of columns and girders in bundled tube were selected as a parameter, it is the most efficient to increase the size of the interior columns with the largest reduction of lateral drift if the steel tonnage of a frame can be increased. It was noticed that the shear lag was affected more by the exterior stiffness factor and ratio than by the interior ones when column spacing was changed, and when the size of column was changed, the reverse phenomenon was happened. And The change of column spacing affected shear lag, lateral drift, and tonnage more than that of column size or girder size.

  • The tube structures act like cantilevered box beams and effectively resist lateral loads. In result, they are adopted as a high-rise buildings system. However, the shear lag in tube system prevents the idealized tube behavior such as a cantilevered box beam. Therefore, the studies on shear lag phenomena are necessarily requested. The presented papers are almost studied on framed tube structures and tube in tube structures. However, the study on the shear lag in the tube structure with core wall is lack. Thus, in this paper, the shear lag of the structure is studied. The shear lag coefficient is defined to investigate shear lag phenomena. However, existing shear lag coefficients are not adequate for understanding them. Therefore, on this study, new shear lag coefficient is suggested. In addition, the shear lag in the tube structure with core wall is analyzed by changing the five structural parameters of stiffness factor in frame, stiffness factor in wall, stiffness ratio, the number of stories and the number of bays.

  • A mathematical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the additional bending stresses of tube(s)-in-tube structures due to tube-tube interaction, which has a significant effects on the shear-lag phenomenon. The proposed method simulates the framed-tube structures with multiple internal tubes as equivalent multiple tubes, each composed of four equivalent orthotropic plate panels. Hence, the tube(s)-in-tube structure can be analysed by using an analogy approach where each tube is individually modelled by a continuous beam that can account for the flexural and shear deformations as well as the shear-lag effects. The numerical analysis is applicable for the structural analysis of framed-tube structures with single and multiple internal tubes, as well as those without internal tubes. The shear-lag phenomenon of such structures is studied with additiona] bending stresses and shear-lag reversal points.

  • The classical theory of thin-walled members is unable to reflect the shear lag phenomenon since it is based on the assumption of no shearing strains in the middle surface of the walls. In this paper, an energy equation for the lateral buckling of thin-walled members has been derived which includes the effects of torsion, warping and, especially, the shearing strains which reflect the shear lag phenomenon. A numerical analysis for the lateral buckling of thin-walled members with openings by using Galerkin's method of weighted residuals has been presented. The proposed numerical values and the predictions by experiment for the lateral buckling loads are to agree closely in the paper. The results from these comparisons show that the proposed method here is capable of predicting the lateral buckling of thin-walled members with openings. The fast convergence of the results indicates the numerical stability of the method. By the study, a very complex practical eigenvalue problem is transformed into a very simple one of solving only a linear equation with one variable.

  • A simple numerical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the shear lag effects of framed-tube system with multiple internal tubes. The tube(s)-in-tube structure is analysed by using an analogy approach in which each tube is individually modelled by a beam that can accounts for the flexural and shear deformations, as well as the shear lag effects. The numerical analysis is based on the minimum potential energy principle in conjunction with the variational approach. The shear lag phenomenon of such structures is studied with additional bending stresses. Structural parameters governing the shear lag behaviour in tube(s)-in-tube structures are also investigated through thirty-three numerical examples.

  • Shear lag effect can be an important phenomenon to consider in design of the steel-concrete composite beams. Researchers have found that the effect can be strongly related with the moment distribution, the stiffness and the ductility of the composite beams. For continuous composite beams expected to sustain hogging moment, the shear lag effect can be more distinct as cracking of the concrete slab reduces its shear stiffness. Despite its influences on behaviour of the steel-concrete composite beams, a method for calculating the shear lag effect in steel-concrete composite beams sustaining hogging moment is still not available. Shear lag effect in steel-concrete composite beams sustaining hogging moment is investigated in this paper. A method was proposed specifically for predicting the effect in the cracked part of the steel-concrete composite beam. The method is validated against available experimental data. At last, FE studies are conducted for steel-concrete composite beams with different design parameters, loading conditions and boundary conditions to further investigate the shear lag effect and compare with the proposed method.

  • Presence of high degree of orthotropy enhances shear lag phenomenon in laminated composite box-beams and it persists till failure. In this paper three key parameters governing shear lag behavior of laminated composite box beams are identified and defined by simple expressions. Uniqueness of the identified key parameters is proved with the help of finite element method (FEM) based studies. In addition to this, for the sake of generalization of prediction of shear lag effect in symmetrical laminated composite box beams a feed forward back propagation neural network (BPNN) model is developed. The network is trained and tested using the data base generated by extensive FEM studies carried out for various b/D, b/tF, tF/tW and laminate configurations. An optimum network architecture has been established which can effectively learn the pattern. Computational efficiency of the developed ANN makes it suitable for use in optimum design of laminated composite box-beams.

  • This study provides a simplified method for the evaluation of shear lag stress in rectangular box T-joints. The occurrence of shear lag phenomenon in the box T-joint generates stress concentration localized at both web-flange junctions of the beam, which leads to cracking or failure in the weld region of the joint. To prevent such critical circumstance, peak stress at the weld region is required to be checked during a preliminary design stage. In this paper, the shear lag stresses in the T-joints were evaluated using least-work solution in which the longitudinal displacements of the beam flange and web were presumed. The evaluation process considered particularly the effect of column flange flexibility, which was represented by an axial spring model, on the shear lag stress distribution. A simplified method for stress evaluation was provided to avoid solving complex mathematical problems using a stress modification factor βs from a parametric study. The results showed that the proposed method was valid for predicting the shear lag stress in the box T-joints manually, as well compared with finite element results. The results are further summarized, discussed, and clarified that more flexible column flange caused higher stress concentration.
