To improve the physical properties of OCC (Old Corrugated Container) fibers, we used the mechanical pre-treatment on the fibers before refining . The mechanical action in the Hobart mixer induced high shear and compression on the fibers, which resulted in changes of fiber internal structure, and microcompressions on the surface of the fibers. We evaluated the amount of mechanical treatment on the fibers by fiber curl index for convenience. Four different refining techniques were applied to the pre-treated fibers (valley beater, Kady mill, PFI mill, and Impact refining) to find the best combination of the pre-treatment and the refining methods. Conclusions were summarized as followed. 1. Mechanical pre-treatment in Hobart mixer for more than 1 hour caused the increase of curl index of OCC fibers, and increased breaking length, burst index, and tear index the handsheets more than 10 % in this experiment. 2. Kady mill and PFI mill refining were effective in keeping fiber length from shortening Kady mill and Valley beater refining straightened out the fiber curls, and reduced the curl index. 3. Valley beating reduced fiber length very fast and generated fines more than other refining methods. 4. To increase breaking length and burst strength while keeping tear strength , combination of mechanical pre-treatment and Valley beating were most effective.
In the present study, we investigate the flow characteristics of a quadrotor UAV in a hovering mode by measuring multiple two-dimensional velocity fields in the wake. The experiment is conducted at Re = 24,000 in a chamber large enough to neglect the ground effect, where Re is the Reynolds number based on the rotor chord length and the rotor tip speed. The rotational speed of the rotor is determined by an optical tachometer so that the lift force can be balanced with the weight of the UAV. The velocity field measured on the center plane of the rotor shows that the vortices are shedding from the tip of the rotor, inducing large fluctuations in the streamwise velocity along the wake shear layer. The strength of the rotor-tip vortex shedding is asymmetric with respect to the rotor axis due to the interaction between the rotor and the wake centerline of each rotor is inclined to the center of the UAV due to the pressure difference caused by the induced velocity. The wake from each rotor moves closer to each other while traveling in the streamwise direction, and then is merged together inducing large fluctuations in the transverse velocity. Due to the wake merging, on the center plane of the UAV, the velocity increases in the streamwise direction showing two-peak structure in the streamwise velocity contours.

We conducted a statistical study of polar mesospheric summer echoes (PMSEs) in relation to magnetic local time (MLT), considering the geomagnetic conditions using the K-index (or K). Additionally, we performed a case study to examine the velocity profile, specifically for high velocities (≥ ~100 m/s) varying with high temporal resolution at high K-index values. This study utilized the PMSE data obtained from the mesosphere-stratosphere-troposphere radar located in Esrange, Sweden (63.7°N, 21°E). The change in K-index in terms of MLT was high (K ≥ 4) from 23 to 04 MLT, estimated for the time PMSE was present. During the near-midnight period (0-4 MLT), both PMSE occurrence and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) displayed an asymmetric structure with upper curves for K ≥ 3 and lower curves for K < 3. Furthermore, the occurrence of high velocities peaked at 3-4 MLT for K ≥ 3. From case studies focusing on the 0-3 MLT period, we observed persistent eastward-biased high velocities (≥ 200 m/s) prevailing for ~18 min. These high velocities were accompanied with the systematic motion of profiles at 85-88 km, including large shear formation. Importantly, the rapid variations observed in velocity could not be attributed to neutral wind effects. The present findings suggest a strong substorm influence on PMSE, especially in the midnight and early dawn sectors. The large zonal drift observed in PMSE were potentially energized by local electromagnetic fields or the global convection field induced by the electron precipitation during substorms.

In this paper, we present a convenient liquid crystal (LC) molecular alignment method using brush hairs as an alternative to the rubbing process in the LC display industry. Titanium strontium yttrium zirconium oxide (TiSrYZrO) solution was prepared using a sol-gel process, and the TiSrYZrO alignment film production and LC molecular alignment were integrated through a one-step brush coating process. As the curing temperature increased, the LC molecule alignment of the LC cell improved, and the formation of a physical surface anisotropic structure due to the shear stress caused by the movement of the brush hairs on the coating surface led to uniform alignment of the LC molecules. Uniform and homogeneous LC molecular alignment was confirmed through polarizing optical microscopy and pretilt angle measurement. Through thermal oxidation using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the TiSrYZrO thin film well formed of metal oxide was confirmed and verified to have excellent optical transparency. From these results, it is expected that a convenient LC molecular alignment method using brush hairs as an alternative to the rubbing process will be a viable next-generation technology.
This paper presents numerical simulations of flow around a circular patch of vegetation using a depth-averaged two-dimensional numerical model which is capable of simulating flow structure in vegetated open channel. In order to account for vegetation effect, drag force terms are included in governing equations. Numerical simulations are conducted with various solid volume fractions (SVF). Flow passes through a circular patch and low velocity region, which is called wake region, is formed downstream of the patch. When SVF is larger than 0.08, a recirculation is observed. The location of the recirculation is moved further downstream as SVF decreases. Von-$K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ vortex street is developed beyond the wake region due to interaction between two shear layers induced by a circular patch of vegetation. The vortex is developed as SVF is larger than 0.08, and the location of the vortex is consistent with the maximum of turbulence kinetic energy. The location of the peak of turbulence kinetic energy is moved further downstream as SVF decreases.

This paper investigates the caharactheristics of the earth pressure magnigue and distribution in jointed rockmass for a safe and economic design and construction of earth retaining structures installed in rock stratum. For this purpose, this study will first investigate the limitations and problems of the existing earth pressure studies and then to overcome them th study will conduct the discontinuum numerical parametric studies based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM), which can consider the joint characteristics in rock stratum. The controlled parameters include rock type and joint conditions (joint shear strength and joint angle), and the magnitude and distribution characteristics of earth pressure have been investigated considering the interactions between the ground and the retaining structures. In addition, the comparison between the earth pressures induced in rock stratum and Peck's earth pressure for soil ground has been carried out. From the comparison, it is found that the earth pressure magnitude and distribution in jointed rockmass has been highly affected by rock type and joint condition and has shown different characteristics compared with the Peck's empirical earth pressure. This result would hereafter be utilized as an important information and a useful data for the assessment of earth pressure for designing a retaining structures installed in jointed rockmass.

Acoustic backscatter profiles were measured by Eco-sounder along an east-west section in the mid-eastern Yellow Sea and at an anchoring station in the low salinity region off the Keum River estuary in September 2012, with observing physical water property structure by CTD. Tidal front was established around the sand ridge developed in 50 m depth region. Internal waves measured by Eco-sounder during low tide period in the eastern side of the sand ridge were nonlinear depression waves with wave height of 15 m and mean wavelength of 500 m. These waves were interpreted into tidal internal waves that were produced by tidal current flowing over the sand ridge to the southeast. When weakly non-linear soliton model was applied, propagation speed and period of these internal depression wave were 50 m/s and 16~18 min. Red tides by Dinoflagelates Cochlodinium were observed in the sea surface where strong acoustic scattering layer was raised up to 7 m. Hourly CTD profiles taken at the anchoring station off the Keum River estuary showed the halocline depth change by tidal current and land-sea breeze. When tidal current flowed strongly to the northeast during flood period and land-breeze of 7 m/s blew to the west, the halocline was temporally raised up as much as 2 m and acoustic profile images showed a complex structure in the surface layer within 5-m depth: in tens of seconds the declined acoustic structure of strong and weak scattering signals alternatively appeared with entrainment and intrusion shape. These acoustic profile structures in the surface mixed layer were observed for the first time in the coastal sea of the mid-eastern Yellow Sea. The acoustic profile images and turbidity data suggest that relatively transparent low-layer water be intruded or entrained into the turbid upper-layer water by vertical shear between flood current and land breeze-induced surface current.
Freezing and thawing cycle is one of the major weathering-induced factors in the mechanical weathering of the rock mass. This natural process accelerates rock weathering process by breaking down the parent rock materials and makes soil or weathered rock formation in a rock slope surface zone. It can also cause reduction of the shear strength in slopes. It is important to calculate the deterioration depth caused by freezing-thawing for a slope stability analysis. In this study, deterioration depths of rock slope due to freezing-thawing were calculated using the 1-D heat conductivity equation. The temperature distribution analysis was also carried out using collected temperature distribution data for last five years of several major cities in Korea. The analysis was performed based on the distributed rock types in study areas. Thermal conductivities, specific heats and densities of the calculation rocks are tested in the laboratory. They are thermal properties of rocks as input parameters for calculating deterioration depths. Finally, the paper is showing the calculated deterioration depths of each rock type slopes in several major cities of Korea.
To increase the strength properties of recycled fiber, especially OCC (Old Corrugated Container) in this study, we used the mechanical pretreatment on the fibers before refining. The mechanical action in the Hobart mixer induced high shear and compression on the fibers, which resulted in the breakdowns of fiber internal structure, and microcompressions on the surface of the fibers. We evaluated the degree of mechanical treatment by fiber curl index. Four different refining techniques were applied to the pretreated fibers (Valley beater, Kady mill, PFI mill, and Impact refining) to find the best combination of the pretreatment and the refining methods. Conclusions were summarized as followed. 1. In keeping the fiber length from shortening, Kady mill and PFI mill refining were effective. Kady mill and Valley beater application tended to straighten out the fiber shapes. 2. Valley beating increased the breaking length of the handsheets better than other methods, while lowering the tear strength most. The mechanical pretreatment increased breaking length about 10% in average irrespective of four different refining methods. 3. Tear strength was increased by the mechanical pretreatment and by the PFI mill refining. 4. Burst strength was increased by the mechanical pretreatment and by valley beating method. 5. In increasing the breaking length and burst strength while keeping tear strength, combination of mechanical pretreatment and Valley beating were most effective.

The infill-wall strengthening method has been widely used for the seismic performance enhancement of the conventional reinforced concrete (RC) frame structures with non-seismic detail, which is one of the promising techniques to secure the high resisting capacity against lateral forces induced by earthquake. During the application of the infill-wall strengthening method, however, it often restricts the use of the structure. In addition, it is difficult to cast the connection part between the wall and the frame, and also difficult to ensure the shear resistance performances along the connection. In this study, an advanced strengthening method using the externally-anchored precast wall-panel (EPCW) was proposed to overcome the disadvantages of the conventional infill-wall strengthening method. The one-third scaled four RC frame specimens were fabricated, and the cyclic loading tests were conducted to verify the EPCW strengthening method. The test results showed that the strength, lateral stiffness, energy dissipation capacity of the RC frame structures strengthened by the proposed EPCW method were significantly improved compared to the control test specimen.
