Traffic flow capacity of some old road bridges is insufficient due to limited deck width. In such cases bridge deck widening is a common solution. For multi-girder reinforced concrete (RC) bridges it is possible to add steel-concrete composite girders as the new outermost girders. The deck widening may be combined with bridge strengthening thanks to thickening of the existing deck slab. Joint action of the existing and the added parts of such bridge span must be ensured. It refers especially to the horizontal plane at the interface of the existing slab and the added concrete layer as well as to the vertical planes at the external surfaces of the initially outermost girders where the added girders are connected to the existing bridge span. Since the distribution of the added concrete is non-uniform in the span cross-section the structure is particularly sensitive to the added concrete shrinkage. The shrinkage induces shear forces in the aforementioned planes. Widening of a 12 m long RC multi-girder bridge span is numerically analysed to assess the influence of the added concrete shrinkage. The analysis results show that: a) in the vertical plane of the connection of the added and the existing deck slab the longitudinal shear due to the shrinkage of the added concrete is comparable with the effect of live load, b) it is necessary to provide appropriate longitudinal reinforcement in the deck slab over the added girders due to tension induced by the shrinkage of the added concrete.
Classic braced walls use struts and wales to minimize ground movements induced by deep excavation. However, the installation of struts and wales is a time-consuming process and confines the work space. To secure a work space around the retaining structure, an anchoring system works in conjunction with a braced wall. However, anchoring cannot perform well when the shear strength of soil is low. In such a case, innovative retaining systems are required in excavation. This study proposes an innovative earth-retaining wall that uses in situ soil confined in dual sheet piles as a structural component. A numerical study was conducted to evaluate the stability of the proposed structure in cohesionless dry soil and establish a design chart. The displacement and factor of safety of the structural member were monitored and evaluated. According to the results, an increase in the clearance distance increases the depth of safe excavation. For a conservative design to secure the stability of the earth-retaining structure in cohesionless dry soil, the clearance distance should exceed 2 m, and the embedded depth should exceed 40% of the wall height. The results suggest that the proposed method can be used for 14 m of excavation without any internal support structure. The design chart can be used for the preliminary design of an earth-retaining structure using in situ soil with dual steel sheet piles in cohesionless dry soil.
In order to establish a dynamic model test method of bridge pylons subjected to ocean waves, the similarity method of hydroelastic model test for bridge pylons were analyzed systematically, and a model design and production method was proposed. Using this method, a dynamic test model of a bridge pylon was made, and then a free vibration test on the model structure and a dynamic response test of the model structure under wave actions were conducted in a wave flume. The results of the free vibration test show that the primary natural frequencies of the structure by the model test are close to the design frequencies of the prototype structure, indicating that the dynamic characteristics of the bridge pylon are well simulated by the model structure. The results of the dynamic response test show that wave induced base shear forces and motion responses on the model structure are consistent with the numerical results of the prototype structure. The model test results confirm that the proposed model test design method is feasible and applicable. It has application and reference significances for model testing studies of such marine bridge structures.
In the current work, a series of three-dimensional finite element analyses have been conducted to investigate the behaviour of pre-existing single piles in response to adjacent tunnelling by considering the tunnel face pressures and the relative locations of the pile tips with respect to the tunnel. Via numerical modelling, the effect of the face pressures on the pile behaviour has been analysed. In addition, the analyses have concentrated on the ground settlements, the pile head settlements and the shear stress transfer mechanism at the pile-soil interface. The settlements of the pile directly above the tunnel crown (with a vertical distance between the pile tip and the tunnel crown of 0.25D, where D is the tunnel diameter) with a face pressure of 50% of the in situ horizontal soil stress at the tunnel springline decreased by approximately 38% compared to the corresponding pile settlements with the minimum face pressure, namely, 25% of the in situ horizontal soil stress at the tunnel springline. Furthermore, the smaller the face pressure is, the larger the tunnelling-induced ground movements, the axial pile forces and the interface shear stresses. The ground settlements and the pile settlements were heavily affected by the face pressures and the positions of the pile tip with respect to the tunnel. When the piles were inside the tunnel influence zone, tensile forces were induced on piles, while compressive pile forces were expected to develop for piles that are outside the influence zone and on the boundary. In addition, the computed results have been compared with relevant previous studies that were reported in the literature. The behaviour of the piles that is triggered by adjacent tunnelling has been extensively examined and analysed by considering the several key features in substantial detail.
This paper addresses the problem of the modeling and vibration control of tapered rotating blade modeled as thin-walled beams and incorporating damping capabilities. The blade model incorporates non-classical features such as anisotropy, transverse shear, secondary warping and includes the centrifugal and Coriolis force fields. For the rotating blade system, a thorough validation and assessment. of a number of non-classical features including the taper characteristics is accomplished. The damping capabilities are provided by a system of piezoactuators bonded or embedded into the structure and spread over the entire span of the beam. Based on the converse piezoelectric effect, the piezoactuators produce a localized strain field in response to a voltage and consequently, a change of the dynamic response characteristics is induced. A velocity feedback control law relating the piezoelectrically induced transversal bending moment at the beam tip with the appropriately selected kinematical response quantity is used and thebeneficial effects upon the closed-loop dynamic characteristics of the blade are highlighted.

Thermally induced vibration response of solar array is investigated. The solar array model consists of composite thin walled beam and solar blanket, spreader bar. The composite thin walled beam incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constituent materials. The solar blanket is a membrane subjected to uniform tension in the z direction. The spreader bar is a rigid member. A coupled thermal structure analysis that includes the effects of structural deformations on heating and temperature gradient is investigated. A stability criterion given in parameters for establishes the conditions for thermal flutter.

Thermally induced vibration response of composite thin-walled beams is investigated in this paper. The flexible spacecraft appendages modeled as thin-walled beam incorporates a number of nonclassical effects of transverse shear, primary and secondary warping, rotary inertia and anisotropy of constitute materials. Thermally induced vibration responds characteristics of a composite thin walled beam exhibiting the circumferantially uniform system(CUS) configuration are exploited in connection with the structural flapwise bending lagwise bending coupling resulting from directioal properties of fiber reinforced composite materials and ply stacking sequence. A coupled thermal structure gradient is investigated.

This paper described a centrifuge study in order to investigate ground-underground hollow structure interaction-induced rocking behavior in liquefied ground. Uplift of the underground hollow structures is initiated due to liquefaction in sandy grounds when the ground is exposed to a strong shaking during earthquakes because the apparent unit weight of these structures is smaller than that of the liquefied soil. In order to evaluate the dynamic behavior of the underground hollow structure and the effects of original subsoil during the uplifting, model tests were performed by changing the relative density of the original subsoil and installing an acrylic box as a trench. The results of the present study show that rocking behavior of the underground hollow structure due to shear deformation of the surrounding subsoil or lateral movement from the original subsoil contributed to large magnitude of the uplift due to strong shaking.

The purpose of this study is to develop a structural analysis system of LNG pump tower structure. The system affords to build optimized finite element model and procedure of the pump tower structure. The pump tower structure is one of the most important components of LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers. The pump tower structure is subject to sloshing load of LNG induced by ship motion depending on filling ratio. Three typer of loading components, which are thermal, inertia and self-gravity are considered in the analysis. The finite element analysis is performed with ANSYS commercial code. The failure of each members can be evaluated of API unity and punching shear in ABS rule. The GUI is newly developed using Tcl/tk script language. All these design and analysis procedures are embedded in to the analysis system successfully.

This study investigates the response of structures to tunnelling-induced ground movements in sand ground, varying tunnel excavation condition (tunnel depth and diameter), tunnel construction condition (ground loss), ground condition (loose sand and dense sand). Four-story block-bearing structures have been used because the structueres can easily be characterized of the extent of dmages with crack size and distribution. Numerical parametric studies have been used to investigae of the response of structures to varying tunnelling conditions. Numerical analysis has been conducted using Discrete Element Method (DEM) to have real cracks when the shear and tensile stress exceed the maximum shear and tensile strength. The results of structure responses from various parametric studies have been integrated to consider tunnel excavation condition, tunnel construction condition, and ground condition and provided as a relationship chart. Using the chart, the response of structures to tunnelling can easily be evaluated in practice in sand ground.
