The aim of this work is to analyze and predict the wave propagation behavior of the carbon nanotube reinforced composites (CNTRC) beams within the framework of various higher order shear deformation beam theory. Using the Euler-Lagrange principle, the wave equations for CNTRC beams are derived, where the determining factor is to make the determinant equal to zero. Based on the eigenvalue method, the relationship between wave number and circular frequency is obtained. Furthermore, the phase and group velocities during wave propagation are obtained as a function of wave number, and the material properties of CNTRC beams are estimated by the mixture rule. In this paper, various higher order shear beam theory including Euler beam theory, Timoshenko beam theory and other beam theories are mainly adopted to analyze the wave propagation problem of the CNTRC beams, and by this way, we conduct a comparative analysis to verify the correctness of this paper. The mathematical model provided in this paper is verified numerically by comparing it with some existing results. We further investigate the effects of different enhancement modes of CNTs, volume fraction of CNTs, spring factor and other aspects on the wave propagation behaviors of the CNTRC beams.
In this paper, the effect of impulsive line on the propagation of shear waves in non-homogeneous elastic layer is investigated. The rigidity and density in the intermediate layer is assumed to vary quadratic as functions of depth. The dispersion equation is obtained by using the Fourier transform and Green's function technique. The study ends with the mathematical calculations for transmitted wave in the layer. These equations are in complete agreement with the classical results when the non-homogeneity parameters are neglected. Various curves are plotted to show the effects of non-homogeneities on shear waves in the intermediate layer.
Many methods and techniques have been developed to obtain the accurate design parameters in soft soils. In particular, several researchers suggest the techniques to get the void ratio for understanding the soil behavior. The objective of this paper verifies the accuracy of the proposed analytical solution for determining the void ratio based on the elastic wave velocities. The paper covers the theories of Wood, Biot, Gassmann and Foti proposed chronological order. The total theory represents the wave propagation in fully saturated medium. To verify the proposed analytical solution, the laboratory and field tests are carried out. After measuring the elastic wave, the void ratios are assessed using proposed equation. The volume based void ratios are also obtained for comparing with the estimated value by several equations. The values estimated by volume, Gassmann and Biot are show good similarity. However, the void ratios based on Wood and Foti methods have a slightly different trend. This study suggests that the theories of Biot and Gassmann may be a useful equation for assessing the void ratio using elastic wave velocities in the field.
This paper reports the result of an investigation into wave propagation in orthotropic laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shells in hydrothermal environment. A dynamic model of laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shell is derived based on Cooper-Naghdi shell theory considering the effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia. The wave characteristics curves are obtained by solving an eigenvalue problem. The effects of layer numbers, thickness of piezoelectric layers, thermal loads and humid loads on the wave characteristics curves are discussed through numerical results. The solving method presented in the paper is validated by the solution of a classical elastic shell non-containing the effects of transverse shear and rotary inertia. The new features of the wave propagation in laminated piezoelectric cylindrical shells with various laminated material, layer numbers and thickness in hydrothermal environment and some meaningful and interesting results in this paper are helpful for the application and the design of the ultrasonic inspection techniques and structural health monitoring.
Previous research has been conducted on an ultrasonic wave reflection method that utilizes a steel plate embedded in the concrete to measure the reflection loss of shear waves at the steel-concrete interface. The reflection loss has been shown to have a linear relationship to compressive strength at early ages. The presented investigations continue this research by examining the fundamental relationship between the reflection loss, measured with shear waves, and the hydration kinetics of Portland cement mortar, represented by dynamic elastic moduli, compressive strength and degree of hydration. Dynamic elastic moduli are measured by fundamental resonant frequency and degree of hydration is determined by thermogravimetric analysis. The water/cement ratio was varied for the tested mixture compositions. The results presented herein show that compressive strength, dynamic shear modulus and degree of hydration have a linear relationship to the reflection loss for the tested mortars at early ages.
The resultant cutting force during machining with a worn tool is viewed as a decomposition of the cutting force into a cutting force component related to chip removal from the workpiece and into a component dependent on the contact force between the tool flank's wear land and the workpiece. The shear line method, in which the cutting force is considered proportional to the length of the shear line, is used to calculate the cutting force component for the removal of the chip, while the elastic effect of the workmaterial on the tool is taken into consideration to analyze the effect of tool flank wear. The predicted resultant cutting force, expressed as the sum of both components, is compared to experimental data obtained during wave-on-wave cutting.
A comparative study on dynamic and static measurement of initial stiffness was conducted. Because soil stiffness decreases even at very small strains, the initial stiffness has been measured by dynamic tests using shear wave velocity measurement. On the other hand, due to the advance of local strain measurement, the triaxial testing device is capable of measuring the static initial stiffness. It has been known that initial stiffness measured by static triaxial tests is generally lower than that measured by dynamic tests possibly due to the limitation of static measurement of displacement at very small strains. This study presents experimental results indicating that the elastic shear moduli could be the same both in dynamic and static measurements owing to the soil anisotropy induced by anisotropic stresses.
Elastic and electromagnetic waves can be used to gather important information about particulate materials. To facilitate smart geophysical characterization of particulate materials, their fundamental properties are discussed and experimental procedures are presented for both elastic and electromagnetic waves. The first application is related to the characterization of particulate materials using shear waves, concentrating on changes in effective stress during consolidation, multi-phase phenomena with relation to capillarity, and microscale characteristics of particles. The second application involves electromagnetic waves, focusing on stratigraphy detection in layered soils, estimation of void ratio and its spatial distribution, and conduction in unsaturated soils. Experimental results suggest that shear waves allow studying particle contact phenomena and the evolution of interparticle forces, while electromagnetic waves give insight into the characteristics of the fluid phase and its spatial distribution.
In this paper, a new size-dependent quasi-3D plate theory is presented for wave dispersion analysis of functionally graded nanoplates while resting on an elastic foundation and under the hygrothermaal environment. This quasi-3D plate theory considers both thickness stretching influences and shear deformation with the variations of displacements in the thickness direction as a parabolic function. Moreover, the stress-free boundary conditions on both sides of the plate are satisfied without using a shear correction factor. This theory includes five independent unknowns with results in only five governing equations. Size effects are obtained via a higher-order nonlocal strain gradient theory of elasticity. A variational approach is adopted to owning the governing equations employing Hamilton's principle. Solving analytically via Fourier series, these equations gives wave frequencies and phase velocities as a function of wave numbers. The validity of the present results is examined by comparing them with those of the known data in the literature. Parametric studies are conducted for material composition, size dependency, two parametric elastic foundation, temperature and moisture differences, and wave number. Some conclusions are drawn from the parametric studies with respect to the wave characteristics.
This paper examines the dispersion relation governing the wave propagation on cylindrical shells. The assumption of thin shells allows the dispersion relation to be separated into three relations related to the propagation of flexural waves and two types of membrane waves. Those relations are used to identify the characteristics of the wave number curves. The dispersion relation provides two and three closed wave number curves below and above the ring frequency. Above the ring frequency three wave number curves are clearly identified to be those of flexural, shear and longitudinal waves, respectively. Below the ring frequency, the characteristics of two wave number curves are identified with dependence of the direction of wave propagation.
