  • This paper aims to derive a mathematical model of the dynamics of handling task in field robot which stable grasping and manipulates a rigid object with some dexterity. Firstly, a set of differential equation describing dynamics of the manipulators and object together with geometric constraints of tight area-contacts on motion of the overall system is analyzed and a method of computer simulation for overall system of differential-algebraic equations is presented. Thirdly, simulation results are shown and the effects of geometric constraints of contact-area are discussed. Finally, it is shown that even in the simplest case of dual single D.O.F. manipulators there exists a sensory feedback from sensing data of he rotational angle of the object to command inputs to joint actuators and this feedback connection from sensing to action eventually realizes secure grasping of the object, provided that he object is of rectangular shape and motion is confined to a horizontal

  • This paper is concerned with the nonlinear hyperelastic problem fur the incompressible characteristics of the rubber. Tension sensor is a strain gage type load cell element for a fence intrusion detection system and consists of the sensing part and the rubber housing. The analysis includes an elastic analysis and a hyperelastic analysis of a tension sensor for the deformed shape and variation of the maximum strain on the sensing part with respect to the vertical load. Numerical results show that the hyperelastic model is stiffer and less deformed than the elastic model. Comparing with the experimental test data, we know the hyperelastic model is the better approximation than the elastic model.

  • This paper presents a preliminary study to monitor the lateral behavior of pile foundation using multiplexed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. In the preliminary study, an 1.7 meter long cantilever beam with the shape of square hollow box was fabricated and tested under the static loading. Four FBG sensors were multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed into the top and bottom of the cantilever beam. The strains are directly measured from FBG sensors followed by curvature calculations based on the plane section assumption. Vertical deflections are then estimated using the regression analyses based on the geometric relationships. It has been found that excellent correlation with conventional sensing system was observed. The success of the test encourages the use of the FBG sensing system as a monitoring system for pile foundations. However, further consideration should be given in the case of the sensor malfunction for the practical purpose.

Mean-Shift Blob Clustering and Tracking for Traffic Monitoring System

  • Object tracking is a common vision task to detect and trace objects between consecutive frames. It is also important for a variety of applications such as surveillance, video based traffic monitoring system, and so on. An efficient moving vehicle clustering and tracking algorithm suitable for traffic monitoring system is proposed in this paper. First, automatic background extraction method is used to get a reliable background as a reference. The moving blob(object) is then separated from the background by mean shift method. Second, the scale invariant feature based method extracts the salient features from the clustered foreground blob. It is robust to change the illumination, scale, and affine shape. The simulation results on various road situations demonstrate good performance achieved by proposed method.

  • To have high flatness quality of hot rolled strip in the hot strip finishing mill train, a new inter-stand tension profile measuring device of segmented looper roll type(coined as Flatness Sensing Inter-stand Looper, FlatSIL) and a new flatness control system have been developed in this study. The device measures the strip tension profile across the strip width and informs the strip wave pattern to new flatness control system where work roll bending mode to relieve the strip wave is determined. The existing automatic shape control system which uses laser type shape-meter installed at the outlet of the last finishing mill stand strip tension between down coiler and last finishig mill since the latent wave concealed by the strip tension between down coiler and last finishing mill stand cannot be measured by the laser distance-meter. Thus the existing shape control system is not able to control the flatness through the full strip length. The new flatness control system, however, works for full strip length during strip rolling as far as the tension profile measuring device and work roll bender are on. With the new flatness control system, work roll bender is automatically controller to minimize the latent wave of the running strip and the flatness quality as well as strip travelling stability has been noticeably improved from strip head through body to tail.

Interfacial Properties and Stress-Cure Sensing of Single-Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) Fiber/Epoxy Composites using Electro-Micromechanical Techniques (미세역학적 시험법을 이용한 단-섬유 형태 형상기억합금/에폭시 복합재료의 계면특성 및 응력-경화 감지능)

  • It is well know that the structure of shape memory alloy (SMA) can change from martensite austenite by either temperature or stress. Due to their inherent shape recovery properties, SMA fiber can be used such as for stress or cure-monitoring sensor or actuator, during applied stress or temperature. Incomplete superelasticity was observed as the stress hysteresis at stress-strain curve under cyclic loading test and temperature change. Superelasticity behavior was observed for the single-SMA fiber/epoxy composites under cyclic mechanical loading at stress-strain curve. SMA fiber or epoxy embedded SMA fiber composite exhibited the decreased interfacial properties due to the cyclic loading and thus reduced shape memory performance. Rigid epoxy and the changed interfacial adhesion between SMA fiber and epoxy by the surface treatment on SMA fiber exhibited similar incomplete superelastic trend. Epoxy embedded single SMA fiber exhibited the incomplete recovery during cure process by remaining residual heat and thus occurring residual stress in single SMA fiber/epoxy composite.

  • High spatial resolution satellite image classification has a limitation when only using the spectral information due to the complex spatial arrangement of features and spectral heterogeneity within each class. Therefore, the extraction of the spatial information is one of the most important steps in high resolution satellite image classification. This study proposes a new spatial feature extraction method, named SSI(Shape-Size Index). SSI uses a simple region-growing based image segmentation and allocates spatial property value in each segment. The extracted feature is integrated with spectral bands to improve overall classification accuracy. The classification is achieved by applying a SVM(Support Vector Machines) classifier. In order to evaluate the proposed feature extraction method, KOMPSAT-2 and QuickBird-2 data are used for experiments. It is demonstrated that proposed SSI algorithm leads to a notable increase in classification accuracy.

Evaluating Joint Motion Sensing Efficiency According to the Implementation Method of CNT-Based Fabric Sensors (CNT 기반의 직물센서 구현 방법에 따른 관절동작 센싱 효율 평가)

  • This study aimed to determine the effects of the shape and attachment position of stretchable textile sensors coated with carbon nanotube on their performance when used to measure children's joint movements. Moreover, the child-safe requirements for fabric motion sensors are established. The child participants were advised to wear integrated clothing equipped with the sensors of various shapes (rectangular and boat-shaped) and attachment positions (at the knee and elbow joints or 4 cm below the joints). The voltage change induced by the elongation and contraction of the fabric sensors was determined for arm and leg flexion-extension motions at 60 deg/s (three measurements of 10 repeats each for 60°and 90°angles, for a total of 60 repetitions). Their dependability was determined by comparing the fabric motion sensors to the associated acceleration sensors. The experimental results indicate that the rectangular-shaped sensor affixed 4 cm below the joint is the most effective fabric motion sensor for measuring children's arm and leg motions. In this study, we designed a textile sensor capable of tracking children's joint motion and analyzed the sensor shape and attachment position on motion sensing clothing. We demonstrated that flexible fabric sensors integrated into garments may be used to detect the joint motions of the human body.

A Study on the Efficiency of a Load Sensing Main Control Valve Using SimulationX (SimulationX를 이용한 부하 감지형 메인 컨트롤밸브의 효율에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, we develop a model of an open center and load-sensing system and for a main control valve to analyze system characteristics and efficiency using SimulationX. In order to analyze the operating characteristics of the pressure and flow of the main control valve of an open center system, a test was performed at each port. The reliability of the model was confirmed by comparing the similarity of the analysis results with the test results before analyzing the operating characteristics of the system. Development of the load sensing main control valve was performed by adding a flow sharing valve and a notched shape to the open center system based on it's the proven reliability. The authors performed the simulation under the same load conditions in order to compare the efficiency of the systems. Additionally, the combined operation performance was investigated by means of analyzing the characteristics of flow distribution under different load conditions.

A Comparative Study of Gas Sensing Properties of Au-loaded ZnO and Au@ZnO Core-shell Nanoparticles

  • Au@ZnO core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by a simple method followed by heat-treatment for gas sensor applications. The advantage of the core-shell morphology was investigated by comparing the gas sensing performances of Au@ZnO core-shell NPs with pure ZnO NPs and different wt% of Au-loaded ZnO NPs. The crystal structures, shapes, sizes, and morphologies of all sensing materials were characterized by XRD, TEM, and HAADF-STEM. Au@ZnO core-shell NPs were nearly spherical in shape and Au NPs were encapsulated in the center with a 40-45 nm ZnO shell outside. The gas sensing operating temperature for Au@ZnO core-shell NPs was $300^{\circ}C$, whereas it was $350^{\circ}C$ for pure ZnO NPs and Au-loaded ZnO NPs. The maximum response of Au@ZnO core-shell NPs to 1000 ppm CO at $300^{\circ}C$ was 77.3, which was three-fold higher than that of 2 wt% Au-loaded ZnO NPs. Electronic and chemical effects were the primary reasons for the improved sensitivity of Au@ZnO core-shell NPs. It was confirmed that Au@ZnO core-shell NPs had better sensitivity and stability than Au-loaded ZnO NPs.
