  • An Eulerian finite element analysis for the steady state rolling process is addressed. This analysis combines the crystal plasticity theory fur texture development as well as the continuum damage mechanics for growth of micro voids. Although an Eulerian analysis for steady state rolling has many advantages, it needs an initial assumption about the shape of control volume. However, the assumed control volume does not match the final shapes. To effectively predict the correct shape in an assumed control volume, a free surface correction algorithm and a streamline technique are introduced. Applications to plate rolling, clad rolling, and shape rolling will be given and the results will be discussed in detail.

  • Micro-alloyed steel or heat-treatment-free used in clean technology have been replacing for conventional quenched-and-tempered structural steels since the micro-alloyed forging steel was developed in early 1970s in Germany for saving money of heat treatment, simplified process, short delivery and good productivity. In this paper, ball stud assembled in steering system for automobile was selected to compare conventional process making heat treatment with new process using high strength micro-alloyed steel without heat treatment. The conventional process for ball stud was composed of a total of 6 steps including upsetting, forward extrusion, machining, burnishing and tread rolling with heat treatment and shot blasting. As opposed to conventional process, newly proposed process for ball stud using the clean technology without heat treatment is simplified such as forward extrusion, heading, upsetting, forming having a flange shape and tread rolling. Also net shape forming process to achieve specified process not to include machined step fur manufacturing the ball stud was applied to newly simplified process since micro-alloyed steel is difficult to be formed.

  • Elongation rolling process is an intermediate process to make the uniform thickness and uniform surface roughness during producing seamless pipes. The thickness and surface roughness of seamless pipes are generally affected by the distance of rolls and guide shoes, the roll shape, and its cross angle. In this study, finite element analysis for shape forming process is based on the analysis model of elongation rolling mill with guide shoes. This paper shows how the cross angle of the roll, the rolling rpm, and the distance of the guide shoe influence on the outer diameter and the thickness of seamless pipes. The rolling rpm did not give much influence on outer diameter.

  • In industrial practice caliber design in shape rolling depends on the designer's experience which in general is obtained through costly trial-and error process. Demonstrated in this paper is an application of the finite element method to the determination of optimal caliber shapes in shape rolling of LM-Guide.

  • The continuous process systems usually consists of various components: driven rollers. idle rolls, load-cell and so on. Even a simple fault in a single component in the line may cause a catastrophic damage on the final products. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to diagnosis the components of the continuous systems. In this paper, an adaptive eccentricity compensation method is presented. And a new diagnosis method for transverse roll shape defects on rolling process is developed. The new method was induced from analyzing the rolling mechanism by using rolling force model, tension model, Hitchcock's equation, and measured delivery thickness of materials etc. Computer simulation results also show that the proposed diagnosis methods is very effective in the diagnosis of 3-D roll shape

  • The rolling process is an efficient and economical approach for the manufacturing of plate metals. In the rolling process, the temperature variation is very critical for plate thickness accuracy. The main cause of thickness variation in hot plate mills is the non-uniform temperature distribution along the length of the slab. Also the exit plate thickness is mainly affected by the rolling conditions such as mill modulus, plate thickness and plate width. Hence the thickness variation in top-end is also dependent on these factors. Therefore this study has concentrated on determining the correct amounts of thickness variation due to top-end temperature drop and process parameters.

  • Shape rolling has been studied experimentally by many researchers. As large numbers of process variables are involved and the material flow is difficult to analyze in shape rolling, the use of numerical techniques as an engineering tool becomes extremely attractive. The first numerical approach to the three-dimensional plastic deformation of rolling was to investigate side spread in flat rolling. Oh and Kobayashi conducted a pioneering study in this field by applying an extremum principle for rigid, perfectlyplastic materials combined with the numerical computation. Since then, several other researchers have used three-dimensional finite element method for analysing spread in rolling . In this investigation of shaperolling al the computer simulations of shape rolling were conducted using TASKS. To verify the predictive capabilities of TASKS the first example chosen was square-to-round shape rolling

  • In this paper, the process parameters of thread rolling were designed based on the numerical analysis results. Firstly, the effective analysis conditions that guarantee the reliability of the analysis results were found. To find the effective analysis conditions, the analyses were carried out for various numbers of teeth. And then, the effects of the process parameters such as tool shape and temperature on the thread rolling performance were investigated. The formability in thread rolling process was evaluated in terms of Cockcroft-Latham damage value. In order to evaluate formability, Cockcroft-Latham damage value was normalized by the critical damage value which was obtained from the analysis of uniaxial tensile test. The analyses were carried out using DEFORM-3D. The results showed that the flank angle and crest round had an effect on the thread rolling load. It was also shown that temperature had significant effects on the effective strain distribution, rolling load, and damage. With the reduced formability of stainless steel at higher temperature, it was shown that the normalized damage values increased as the process temperature.

  • Multiple scale modeling has been applied to predict defect shape change during the wire rod rolling process. The size difference between bloom and defect prevent using usual FEM approaches due to the enormous number of elements required to depict the defect. The newly developed multiple scale model can visualize defect shape changes during the multi stands rolling process. The defect positioned at the top and side of bloom are smoothed out but the one at the middle evolved as folding or remained as crack. This approach can be used for defect control with roll shape design and initial bloom shape.

  • In hot roiling process, new rolling mills have been apapted to strip rolling but we can usually experience the problem of snaking of strip. This phenomenon was arisen by nonsymmetric rolling and on-centering and cambering of a strip and other mill conditions. Three dimensional analysis for strip rolling predicted the influence of nonsymmetric rolling, off-centering and pair crossing system This study evaluated the fundamental characteristics of snaking of a strip to optimize the operating condition for trouble free rolling.
