  • This work discusses the numerical analysis, the design and experimental test of the SMA actuator along with its capabilities and limitations. Convective heating and cooling using water actuate the SMA(Shape memory alloy) element of the actuator. The fuel such as propane, having a high energy density, is used as the energy source for the SMA actuator in order to increase power and energy density of the system, and thus in order to obviate the need for electrical power supplies such as batteries. The system is composed of a pump, valves, bellows, a heater(burner), control unit and a displacement amplification device. The experimental test of the SMA actuator system results in 150 MPa stress(force : 1560 N) with $3\%$ strain and 0.5 Hz. actuation frequency. The actuation frequency is compared with the prediction obtained from numerical analysis. For the designed SMA actuator system, the results of numerical analysis were utilized in determining design parameters and operating conditions.

  • In this paper, we report a non-explosive separation device for a small satellite which utilize a shape memory alloy actuator. Based on previous research, we try to increase the reliability of the proposed device by changing some components. It enables the proposed device to activate under high preload. Also, we confirm it generates low shock which is main advantage of non-explosive separation device. Finally, vibration test which mimics launching environment and thermal vacuum test which mimics space environment are carried out respectively. After each environment test, we confirm the proposed device is successfully activated. Conclusively, we develop a non-explosive separation device which can activate with low shock under high preload after shock and environment tests(vibration and thermal vacuum tests).

  • Experimental set-up for the characterization of Shape Memory Alloys springs which are applicacable to endoscope has been implemented. Fundamental properties of SMA springs were measured by iso-thermal test iso-metric test, iso-tonic test and the relationship between stress and strain, temperature and generated force, displacement and temperature could be characterized experimentally. The implemented experimental set-up and characterization method can be exploited for the design of SMA springs and evaluation of actuators used in endoscope.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the change and to compare to the difference of 'selective elements' and 'space-memory' focusing on the theory, 'selective attention' through the survey results. In this study, In this study, the lighting is considered a important factor in the change of 'selective elements'. this survey is to find the selective elements of participants and to measure the spatial sensitivity of respondents through 'self- test'. The analysis in this study is conducted by descriptive statistics, t-test and one way ANOVA by SPSS program 22. The results of this study are as following; Firstly, 'attention-element' could be classified with 4 types, 'shape', 'material', 'contrast' and 'combination'. 'shape' could divide into 'structure' and' furniture and object'. In case of 'material', it could section with 'pattern' and 'color'. Secondly, through the results of study, 'attention-element' is different each space during the day in detail. But we could know that 'shape' is the important element of the 'attention-elements' during the day through comparison of this result. That means users consider this as a important factor when they evaluate the space. Therefore, it is effective way designers to consider 'shape' as the first element when they want to conduct the special sensitivity of users in the space through planning. On the other hand, what selective elements of users are different by the lighting situation should be acknowledged by designers. And they should think the kinds of selective elements are more various when lighting turns on than turns off.. Thirdly, through the results such as the meaningful difference of space-memory of users according to the change of 'attention-elements', designers should judge about which kind of feeling of users to the space do you want lead in the design process. For the effective feedback between spaces and users to induce the same emotion of users, designers need to consider the unified design and the individual design both. Also, we will regard the differences in the users' emotion to the space according to the lighting situation when we design the space.

  • Thermomechanical and shape memory properties of dicumyl peroxide(DCP) cured semicrystalline EPDM($Nordel^{(R)}$ IP) were investigated. From gel content analysis, it can be seen that Nordel can be crosslinked by small amount of DCP and the degree of crosslinking increased with the increase of DCP content. DSC analysis revealed that the melting temperature and degree of crystallinity of the crosslinked rubber decreased with the increase of DCP. Tensile test showed that tensile modulus increased and elongation at break of the rubber decreased with an increase in the degree of cross linking. The chemically crosslinked semi-crystalline EPDM exhibited excellent shape memory behavior, i.e. the sample was easily deformed to have an arbitrary secondary shape above its melting temperature and was fixed well in its deformed state when it is cooled, and then the fixed shape was recovered to its original shape very fast upon heating above its melting temperature.

  • In this study, we observe the application of shape memory alloy(SMA) into smart structures for repeatable actuation, because SMA changes its material properties and characteristics progressively under cyclic loading conditions and finally reaches stable path(state) after a certain number of stress/temperature loading-unloading cycles, so called 'training'. In this paper, SMA wires that have been in a stable state through the training are used. Stress-strain curve of the SMA wire at different temperature levels are measured. In addition, we observe other important effects such as the rate effect according to strain rates for rapid actuation response. The current work presents the experimental test using SMA wire after training completion by mechanical cycling. Through these tests, we measure the characteristics of SMA. With the estimated SMA properties and effects, we compare the experimental results with the simulation results based on the SMA constitutive equations.

  • In this study, adaptation of two-way shape memory effect of SMA wire to the actuator is examined . Therefore the SMA characteristics which are training, material properties, response time at different thermal cycling rates are tested. During training, permanent deformation is accumulated till a certain number of cycle and then saturated. The amow1t of two-way strain is unchangeable over all cycle and the slope of strain(or stress)-temperature curve is slower as the increase of applied stress. The rate effect is observed resulted from the thermal distribution which heating profile differs from cooling as thermal cycling time. Using the estimated SMA properties, an experimental test for the simple smart wing is performed.

  • Observing the unique stress-strain curves of the superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) in tension and compression, the primary intention of this study is to investigate the behavior of the shafts made of the same material, under torsional loading-unloading cycles for large angle of twist. Experiments have been performed for the superelastic SMA shafts with different unsupported lengths and angles of twist and the results are compared with those of stainless steel (SUS304) shafts under similar test conditions. As expected for the superelastic SMA, the residual strains are small enough after each cycle and consequently, the hysteresis under loading-reverse loading is much narrower than that for the SUS304. For large angle of twists, the torsional strength of the superelastic SMA increases nonlinearly and exceeds that of SUS304. Most interestingly, the slender solid superelastic SMA shafts are found to buckle when acted upon torsion for large angle of twist.

  • A mechanical stiffener has been mainly applied on a PCB to secure fatigue life of a solder joint of an electronic components in spaceborne electronics by minimizing bending displacement of the PCB. However, it causes an increase of mass and volume of the electronics. The high damping PCB implemented by multi-layered viscoelastic tapes of a previous research was effective for assuring the fatigue life of the solder joint, but it also has a limitation to decrease accommodation efficiency for the components on the PCB. In this study, we proposed high damping PCB with a multi-layered superelastic shape memory alloy stiffener for spatialminimized, light-weighted, high-integrated structure design of the electronics. To investigate the basic characteristics of the proposed PCB, a static load test, a free vibration test were performed. Then, the high damping characteristic and the design effectiveness of the PCB were validated through a random vibration test.
