In order to investigate the formation of a shallow water front and its relation to water quality distributions, oceanographic measurements were made, and the numerical computations of the Simpson-Hunter stratification parameter log(H/U$^3$) were performed. It is shown from satellite image and hydrographic data that the shallow water front is formed near the northern Kaduk channel, and the stratification parameter log(H/U$^3$) near the front is in a range of 2.0-2.5. Measured COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) concentrations in offshore region of the front and in the western part of the bay are below 2.0 mg/1. whereas the concentrations in Masan Bay located in the northern inside of the frontal zone are high as 3.0-5.5 mg/1. COD concentrations decrease gradually from Masan Bay toward the offshore due to the dilution by strong water mixing. Anoxic and hypoxic water masses at the bottom layer in summcr occur in the western part of Chinhae Bay and in Masan Bay, and DO (Dissolved Oxygen) concentrations become low with increasing the stratification parameter. DO concentrations outside the front are more than about 4.0 mg/1, whereas the concentrations inside the front are low. The shallow water front plays a significant role for material transport from coastal area to oceanic area, and the frontal region seems to be important physical and chemical boundaries.

In general, coastal damage is mostly occurred by the action of complex factors, like severe water waves. If the maximum storm surge height combines with high tide, severe water waves will overflow coastal structures. Consequently, it can be the cause of lost lives and severe property damage. In this study, using the numerical model, the storm surge was simulated to examine its fluctuation characteristics at the coast in front of Noksan industrial complex, Korea. Moreover, the shallow water wave is estimated by applying wind field, design water level considering storm surge height for typhoon Maemi to SWAN model. Under the condition of shallow water wave, obtained by the SWAN model, the wave overtopping rate for the dike in front of Noksan industrial complex is calculated a hydraulic model test. Finally, based on the calculated wave-overtopping rate, the inundation regime for Noksan industrial complex was predicted. And, numerically predicted inundation regimes and depths are compared with results in a field survey, and the results agree fairly well. Therefore, the inundation modelthis study is a useful tool for predicting inundation regime, due to the coastal flood of severe water wave.

The process of the nonlinear shallow water wave transformation in a basin of a constant depth is studied. Characteristics of the first breaking of the wave are analyzed in details. The Fourier spectrum and steepness of the nonlinear wave are calculated. It is shown that the spectral amplitudes can be expressed using the wave front steepness, which allows the practical estimations.
The purpose of this paper is to study the upstream waves in front of an advancing arbitrary hull shape in a restricted water channel. Conventionally, in a restricted water channel, shallow water effects are amplified because of the finite water depth and width. When the effects of shallow water and the restricted channel width are severe, upstream waves propagate forward from the fore-body of the advancing hull. In this study, numerical simulations are carried out for the relevant analysis of the flow phenomena by the draft variation of advancing hull in a restricted water channel. Numerical simulations are done with a finite-difference method based on the MAC scheme in a rectangular grid system.
Accuracy of a numerical model with the Hwang's scheme of directly analyzing discontinuous topography could be enhanced by introducing a flux correction coefficient that accounted for the deviation of actual pressure from hydrostatic distribution acting on the front of discontinuous topography. The optimal coefficient was determined from 218 experimental runs for square-edged broad-crested weir and simulation with it showed good agreement with another two square-edged broad-crested weir experiments and an unsteady side-weir experiment. This enabled accurate numerical simulation of shallow-water flow over the discontinuous river structure, such as square-edged broad-crested weir, without alleviating discontinuous topography with refined meshes or imposing internal boundary conditions.

Since Broms and Bennermark(1967) suggested the face stability criterion based on laboratory extrusion tests and field observations, the face stability of a tunnel driven in cohesive material has been studied by several authors. And recently, more general solution for the tunnel front is given by Leca and Panet(1988). They adopted a limit state design concept to evaluate the face stability of a shallow tunnel driven into cohesionless material and showed that the calculated upper bound solution represented the actual behavior reasonably well. In this study, two factors are simultaneously considered for assessing tunnel face stability: One is the effective stress acting on the tunnel front calculated by upper bound solution; and the other is the seepage force calculated by numerical analysis under the condition of steady state ground water flow. The model tests were performed to evaluate the seepage force acting on the tunnel front and these results were compared with results of numerical analysis. Consequently, the methodology to evaluate the stability of a tunnel face including limit analysis and seepage analysis is suggested under the condition of steady state ground water flow.

Acoustic propagation in shallow water with changing environments is a major concern of navy. Temporal and spatial variability of acoustic propagation in the northern East China Sea (ECS) is studied, using the 11 years hydrographic data and the Bellhop acoustic model. Acoustic propagation in the northern ECS is highly variable due to extensive interaction of various ocean currents and boundaries. Seasonal variations of transmission loss (TL) with various source depths are highly affected by sharp gradient of sound speed and bottoms interaction. Especially, various bottom sediment types lead to severely degrading a waterborne propagation with bottom loss. In particular, the highly increased TL near the ocean front depends on the source position, and the direction of sound propagation.
Shallow water withdrawal systems have been replaced with a selected withdrawal system to keep stable raw water quality in spite of occurrence of algae and muddy inflow. Before reconstruction of the water intake tower in Yongdam reservoir supplying water to Gosan water treatment facility, we have predicted flow patterns of inflowing water into the water intake tower for various withdrawal conditions. It has been predicted that the water in the withdrawal layer is significantly inflowed from the front with fast velocity into the water intake tower irrespective of withdrawal depth, while the water away from the withdrawal layer is withdrawed a little from the side with slow velocity.

In this study, the effects of urban areas against flood waves due to a dam failure were numerically investigated based on the two laboratory experiments and the predicted water surface elevations at specific points showed good agreement with available measurements. In the first experiment, a relatively high water depth and the delay effect of flow at the front of urban areas are observed. The urban areas may become a large obstacle against smooth propagation of flood wave. In the second one, as the inflow increases, moreover, the water surface elevations can be classified into abruptly decreasing portion and slowly decreasing portion, and the first arrival time to the front of urban area is decreasing with the increasing inflow.

We performed landslide flume tests to analyze characteristics of landslide occurrence and change in the ground materials due to rainfall infiltration. The test apparatus is composed of flume, rainfall simulator, and measurement sensors and landslides were triggered by heavy rainfall (Intensity=200 mm/hr) sprinkled at the above of an artificial slope. The measurement sensors for matric suction and volumetric water content were installed with 3 sets at shallow (GL-0.2 m), middle (GL-0.4 m), and deep depth (GL-0.6 m) in the slope and the tests were performed with in-situ, loose, and dense condition of each weathered soils of granite, gneiss, and mudstone. The analyses show that surface erosion was dominant in initial time of the test due to heavy rainfall and then landslides occur following locally happened transverse tension cracks. The characteristics of landslide were both shallow failure because of a spread of wetting front induced by the rainfall infiltration and retrogressive failure. While the matric suction was decreased rapidly without any precursor in the soil saturation, the volumetric water content was increased gradually, reached its maximum value, and then decreased rapidly with landslide.
