  • Many of the universities in Korea recently is changing the school policy oriented from the supply approach to the demand as the case of business companies. Customer orientation is the key point of the customer satisfaction. But there are few studies focused on the satisfaction of students as a customer. In this paper, we studied the components of satisfaction in university life, the factors affecting on the satisfaction of students, and the relationship among them. The principal components of satisfaction in university life are services related to the activities of students, the utilization of welfare facilities, curriculum, the adminstration on students, and the department office. Factors affecting on the satisfaction of students are expectation, pride, self evaluation on learning, and special activities. Demographic variables, for example, sex, grade, colleges, and so on are also important factors. We also found the fact that the pride was the most important factor, and it gives positive drive on the satisfaction of students in university life. It gives us the important implication to the school policy.

  • This study as performed to survey symmetrical and asymmetrical astigmatism among 1,100 patients(2,200eyes) who were prescribed with spectacles. Of the 2,200 eyes, 59.3%(1,305 eyes) had astigmatism. Among all patients, 21.4%(235 patients) had unilateral astigmatism, 48.6%(535 patients) had bilateral astigmatism. In 1,070 eyes(535 patients) with the bilateral astigmatism, the orientation of astigmatism were 61.2% for with-the-rule astigmatism, 24.7% for against-the-rule astigmatism and 14.1% for oblique astigmatism. On the astigmatic power, -0.25~-0.50D was 47.5%, -0.75~-1.00D was 29.9%. Symmetrical astigmatism was 83.4% of the bilateral astigmatism. Asymmetrical astigmatism was 16.6% of them. From 41 to 50 years of age, 45.4% of the age had symmetrical astigmatism, 14.3% had asymmetrical astigmatism. Types of the left and the right eye in symmetrical astigmatism consisted of with-the-rule astigmatism and with-the-rule astigmatism(65.5%), against-the-rule astigmatism and against-the-rule astigmatism(25.3%), oblique astigmatism and oblique astigmatism(5.6%), etc. In asymmetrical astigmatism, with-the-rule astigmatism and oblique astigmatism was 23.6%, oblique astigmatism and with-the-rule astigmatism was 20.2%. As the results of this study, most of spectacles wearers had bilateral astigmatism that was more than unilateral astigmatism. Symmetrical astigmatism was 5 times more than asymmetrical astigmatism with no sex differences. Especially, symmetrical and asymmetrical astigmatism were more in forties than in other age groups. Over the half of symmetrical astigmatism was with-the-rule astigmatism in the left eye and with-the-rule astigmatism in the right eye. These findings will be used in prescriptions for more comfortable vision.

  • Authors evaluated 152 patients at the department of Pediatric Dentistry in Seoul National University Hospital through clinical records and radiographs. And the following features were studied ; age, sex distribution, number of mesiodens per patients, location, status of eruption, shape and orientation of crown, and complication. From the above results, the relationship between features of mesiodens and complications were evaluated using chi-square analysis. 1. Complications due to the presence of mesiodens did not occur in 31.6%, delayed eruption of adjacent teeth was observed in 33.6%, midline diastema in 22.4%, rotation in 8.6%, displacement in 3.3%, and crowding in 0.7% of all evaluated patients. 2. As compared with the above 8.5 year group, in the under 8.5 year group, the frequency of complications was significantly higher(P<0.05). As compared with those positioned lingually, in mesiodens labially or within the arch the frequency of complications was significantly higher(P<0.01). Also, the frequency of complications was significantly higher when the mesiodens was tuberculate in form(P<0.05). 3. Of the 104 patients with complications, the frequency of delayed eruption was significant higher in the under 8.5 year group, and in above 8.5 year group, the frequency of malocclusion was significantly higher(P<0.05). When mesiodens were located in the midline region, the frequency of malocclusion was significant higher, while in case with laterally positioned mesiodens the frequency of delayed eruption was significantly higher(P<0.01).

  • It is very important to establish precisely the historical phases of nursing. We nurses should try to acquire the central social position in the health management system in the near the future, the 21st Century. Therefore my treatise aims to orient the desirable phases of the history of nursing through the feministic survey of the history of nursing from the post medieval epoche to the modern epoche. During the time of the renaissance which gave morning light to the modern epoche, the antique Athenian thinking of sex was again revived. Athenian excluded the women from the public and autonomous regions. All the medical activity, once dominated by the women, was misfortunately regarded as superstition acted by witches. Accordingly, the nursing women were to hunted as witches. In short, in the early modern epoche, women began to be excluded from the history of medical activities. In the middle modern epoche characterized by the enlightenment movement and early capital economic system, capitalistic patriarchal system began to be formed by change in the economic system. The status of women began to be greatly dropped below by the social distinction of the private dimension of home and the Public dimension of job. The woman was deprived of even the occasion to get the official license of medicine and medical institutions were handed to the state or the powerful and rich merchants. Accordingly, nursing acted mainly in the nunnery as the total approach to the patients was destructed wholly and transformed into the means of earning the money. Therefore unprepared low class -women began to engage in nursing only for the money. From then on, nursing activity was tunneled through the dark age for 200 years. In the late modern epoche characterized by the contrast of the accumulated vast capital by industrialization and vast poverty of the peoples, feminism began to float over the surface for the acquisition of equality of men and women from England. A feminist, Nightingale insisted that the women as nurses should be responsible for the healthy life of man. She tried the professional nursing education for women. Accordingly she not only contributed to the intellectual progress of women but also inspired in women the consciousness of the professional job. She tried to realize the ideal of at-that-time-feminists by engaging in nursing all through life. She really paved the road to contemporary nursing. In the near the future, I will write to describe how the late modern epoche nursing has fallen into the dilemma through the 1st and 2nd world wars and matured capitalism and to consider contemporary nursing with the status of women. All these papers aim to give proper recognition of nursing and right orientation of the future 21st Century nursing.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to determine accurately the part of the tragus to be used to form the Ala-Tragal line or Camper's line in orthognathic profile patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 150 dentate subjects with age of 18-40 years with orthognathic profile were sampled. Life-size lateral digital photographs of the face with fox plane were taken in natural head position. Different angles between Eye-Ear plane and occlusal plane ($OT_1$-OP), Eye-Ear plane and ala-superior border of tragus ($OT_1-AT_1$), Eye-Ear plane and ala-middle border of tragus ($OT_1-AT_2$) and Eye-Ear plane and ala-inferior border of tragus ($OT_1-AT_3$) were calculated using computer software package, AutoCAD 2004. From the three angles formed by the Eye-ear plane ($OT_1$ or FH plane) and the ala-tragal lines, the one closest to the angle formed between Eye-Ear plane ($OT_1$) and occlusal plane (OP) was used to determine the occlusal plane of orientation. The obtained results were subjected to ANOVA F test, Tukey's Honestly significant difference test, followed by Karl Pearson coefficient of correlation test. P values of less than 0.05 were taken as statistically significant. RESULTS. The mean of base line angle i.e. $OT_1$-OP angle ($11.96{\pm}4.36$) was found to be close to $OT_1-AT_2$ angle ($13.67{\pm}1.93$) and $OT_1-AT_3$ angle ($10.31{\pm}2.03$), but $OT_1$-OP angle was found to be more closer to $OT_1-AT_3$ angle. Comparison of mean angles showed that $OT_1$-OP angle in both males (11.68) and females (12.51) is close to $OT_1-AT_3$ angle (males- 11.01, females- 11.95). CONCLUSION. The line joining from ala to the lower border of the tragus was parallel to the occlusal plane in 53.3% of the subjects. There was no influence of the sex on the level of occlusal plane.

  • Objectives:This study was conducted to investigate the degree of psychopathologies of the family members of children with chronic convulsive disorder and evaluate the structures and dynamics of those families. Methods:The participant patients and family members were recruited from the population attending the outpatient clinic of department of pediatric neurology in Seoul National University Hospital in Korea. All the patients had idiopathic chronic convulsive disorder. Any patient with mental retardation, pervasive developmental disorder and gross brain pathology was excluded. As controls, normal students were chosen and their sex, age, achievement, socioeconomic status were matched to patients. The author interviewed the children and their family members twice and obtained informations about patient-parent relationship, patient-sibling relationship and others. For in-depth evaluation, we used family environment scales(FES), symptom Checklist-90-revised(SCL-90-R), self administered dependency questionnaire for mother(SADQ). Results:After interviewing with the parents of epileptic children, overprotection of parents, hostile feeling of siblings toward index children were higher than controls. The parental conflict was also more expressed than control families. According to results from FES, the scores of the subscales of expression, achievement-orientation, intelligence-orientation and active recreation were significantly lower than control group. The epileptic children showed higher dependency to parents especially in affection, communication and traveling areas of SADQ than control group. Maternal psychopathologies evaluated by SCL-90-R were much higher than the mothers of controls. According to T scores of SCL-90-R, about 40% of mothers with epileptic children had the risk of clinically significant depressive or anxiety disorders. Conclusion:These results suggested that the family members of epileptic children had more relationship problems and psychopathologies than control group and some mothers might have clinically significant depressive or anxiety disorders. so, effective psychiatric family interventions are needed for resolution of conflict and psychopathologies of family members.

  • Objectives : The aims of this study were to know the frequency and the nature of cognitive dysfunction in type 2 diabetics, and to reveal influencing variables on it. Methods : From eighty type 2 diabetics (42 males and 38 females), demographic and clinical data were obtained by structured interviews. Cognitive functions were measured using the MMSE-K (Korean Version of the Mini-Mental State Examination) and the Korean Version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-K) tests. Severity of depression was evaluated by the Korean Version of the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (K-HDRS). Results : 1) Among eighty type 2 diabetics, 13.75% were below 24 on the MMSE-K, while 38.8% were below 22 on the MoCA-K. 2) The total scores and subtest scores of the MoCA-K including visuospatial/ executive, attention, language, delayed recall and orientation were significantly lower in type 2 diabetics with cognitive dysfunction (N=31) than those without cognitive dysfunction (N=49) (p<0.001, respectively). 3) There were significant difference between type 2 diabetics with and those without cognitive dysfunction in age, education, economic status, body mass index, duration of diabetes, total scores of the K-HDRS, the MMSE-K and the MoCA-K (p<0.05, respectively). 4) The total scores of the MoCA-K had significant correlation with age, education, body mass index, family history of diabetes, duration of diabetes, total scores of the K-HDRS (p<0.05, respectively). 5) The risks of cognitive dysfunction in type 2 diabetics were significantly influenced by sex, education, fasting plasma glucose and depression. Conclusions : The cognitive dysfunction in type 2 diabetics seemed to be related to multiple factors. Therefore, more comprehensive biopsychosocial approaches needed for diagnosis and management of type 2 diabetes.
