A preliminary study for the evaluation of the effects of sex education program on college students (대학생의 성교육 효과측정을 위한 기초 연구)

  • This study was performed to provide preliminary data for the development of a useful instrument to measure the effect of sex education. The study was conducted with the voluntary participation of 155 college students enrolled in the course "Sexuality and Relationship" at Y university in Seoul. At the end of that course, they were asked to write freely about the change they had experienced on sexuality. All meaningful statements were elicited and classified into 7 categories; "Change of Knowledge", "Enlightenment", "Change of Attitude on Sexuality", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of. Identity", "Change of Emotion", "Change of Behavior:' There were significant changes in the areas of knowledge(28. 6%), enlightenment(27.4%), and attitudes(20.3%) about sexuality among these 7 categories. The Change of Knowledge category consists of 3 areas: "concretion of knowledge", "increase of information", and "correction of misunderstanding." In the category of Enlightenment, total 12 areas are included: "sex role", "erception of lack of knowledge", "importance of family", "life plan", "parent role", "value of life", "equality", "sexual autonomy", "importance of sexuality", "freedom of sexuality", "perception of sexual problem", and "meaning of love." The Attitude Change category consists of 8 areas. These are "being natural", "being progressive", "being sensitive", "being truthful", "being expressive", "being cautious", "being responsible", and "being confident". The category of Buildup of Ability includes 4 areas: "problem solving", "sex education", "relationship", and "communication". The category of Buildup of Identity includes "sexual identity", and "value of sexuality". The Emotional Change category includes 3 areas: "positive feeling", "negative feeling", and "breaking from negative feeling on sexuality". The Behavior Change category includes "sex-related behavioral change". In conclusion, up to now most researches on sex education effect measures only changes of knowledge, attitude, and behavior. But we believe the changes in "Enlightenment", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of Identity", "Change of Emotion", should be included in addition to knowledge, attitude, and behavior in the development of an instrument to measure the sex education effects. And the effect of sex education should measure the degree of learning of autonomy, enlightenment, and ability of behavior and so on rather than studying the simple changes in sexuality.enment", "Buildup of Ability", "Buildup of Identity", "Change of Emotion", should be included in addition to knowledge, attitude, and behavior in the development of an instrument to measure the sex education effects. Sexual Attitudes and Experience in Middle School Students, Kangwon-Do, Korea (강원도 중학생의 성 태도와 경험)

  • As an initial step toward the improvement of sexual education in middle school students, a survey on sexual attitudes and experience was done in Kangwon - Do, Korea. Questionnaires consisted of 68 items distributed to 240 boys and 240 girls from November 1 to December 20, 1996. Answers from 420 students were subjected to an analysis with SPSS. 92.4% of the girls experienced menstruation. Of them, 74.0% showed a negative reaction. 52.0% of the boys experienced night ejaculation. Of them, 81. 7% showed a negative reaction. Boys (64.3%) masturbated more than girls (17. 6%) (p= 0.0000). The understanding of masturbation was higher in boys than in girls (p = 0.0000). 87.2% of the subjects wished meetings with the opposite sex. During the meeting with the opposite sex, 12.9% of the students enjoyed drinking or smoking, 8.8% had intercourse. Boys(91.9%) watched pornography or porno-video more than girls(40.5%)(p=0.0000). 83.3% of the girls thought that both males and females should keep their virginity untill marriage. However, only 48.6% of boys thought that(p=0.0000). Of boys who had experienced sexual touch, 34.8% had intercourse. Of the 30 students(26 boys, 4 girls) who experienced sexual intercourse, 22 students had partners of the opposite sex and were friends. First intercourse 63.4% of these students had their in middle school period. The frequencys of sexual intercourse (more than 6times) was written by 12 students (40.0%). 24 students(16 boys and 8 girls) experienced sexual violence. As for dealing with sexual violence, 14 suffered by him or herself whill 7 students discussed it with a friend. There was a significant difference in the sources of information between boys and girls(p= 0.000), 36.0% had learned from an official sexual education source, usually from school nurses (74.0%). 92.6% of the students thought that sexual education was necessary. They believed that the appropriate person for sexual education was from a school nurse (53.1%) or from parents (19.5%). According to the above results, the following might be suggested: Realistic and future-directed sexual education material should be developed : Education programs to improve students insight and control sexual desire should be prepared: a systematic approach to activate the role of school nurse in sexual education should be prepared.

The Study of the Recognition of Sexual Roles, the Demand of Sexual Education and the Consciousness of Sexual Education in the Korean teachers (한국 교사들의 성역할인지, 성교육요구 및 성교육 의식정도에 관한 조사연구)

  • The study was attempted and executed to reach the following conclusions. The period was May 1st through June 15th, 1998 and the subjects were 302 teachers consisting of School Nurses and general teachers in Pusan city. 1) The degrees of recognition of sexual roles by the subjects were compared as follows : The average point as to the recognition of sexual roles in the occupational functions by the school nurses was 2.41, higher than that of the general teachers. The average points as to the recognition of sexual roles in the attitudes by the school nurses was 2.28, higher than that of the general teachers. The average points as to the recognition of sexual roles in the abilitis was 2.26, higher than that of the general teachers. These ascertain that school nurses recognize the man has higher superities in the occupational functions, the attitudes and the abilities than the woman. 2) The degrees of demand of sexual education by the subjects were compared as follows : As to the degrees of demand of sexual education, the school nurses showed higher demand than the general teachers in the concepts such as 'the society and sexualities, physiology and actual education'. 3) The levels of the consciousness of sexual education by the subjects were compared as follows : the general teachers showed the more strict attitudes than the school nurses against the lascivious sex objects and wanted the punishment against the related students and the general teachers have myth. They claimed that their family have no relation with the sexual violence or pornography. As to the masturbation, the general teachers showed the more conservative attitudes. 4) The opinions by the subjects as to the well-qualified person in charge of sexual education in school were compared as follows : 77.3% of the school nurses, and 36.1% of the general teachers supported the school nurses.

A Model of the Theoretical Structure of Factors Influencing College Womens도 Attitudes Toward Menstruation (여성의 월경에 대한 태도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 구조모형구축)

  • This study was designed to develop and test a model of the theoretical structure of factors influencing womens’ attitudes toward menstruation, specifically, premenstrual discomfort or pain, negative affect, disability and role acceptance. The conceptual framework was built through a review of the literature. For the purpose of testing the model, data were collected from April to June, 1992 with the use of Menstrual Distress Questionnaire, Menstrual Attitude Questionnaire, Sex Role Acceptance Scale. Data analysis was done with the SPSS PC/sup +/ for descriptive statistics and PC-LXSREL 7.13 for covariance structure. The study subjects consisted of 320 women college students in 2 three-year nursing junior colleges and 1 department of nursing of a college of medicine. The mean age of the subjects was 19, the mean age at monarch was 13.7, the mean menstrual cycle was 29.7 days and the mean menstrual duration was 5.3 days. The amount of menstrual discharge was moderate and the menstrual cycle variability was within 3 days. The score for pain, negative affect and disability were higher during the perimenstrual period than intermenstrual period. The fit of the hypothetical model with the six paths and the empirical data was high [X²(df=4)=. 57 (P=.966), GFI =.999, AGFI =.997, RMR=.008]. The hypotheses were supported on acceptable level of significance. 1) The higher the pain and negative affect, the stronger the disability. 2) The higher the pain, negative affect and disability, the more negative the attitudes toward menstruation. 3) The lower the women's role acceptance, the more negative the attitudes toward menstruation. The model was supported by the empirical data, and thus these results may help nurses and nursing scientists to understand and support these phenomena of womens’ health experience.

  • In an attempt to promote reading among middle school students which has been declining sharply, this study suggests new directions for reading education in school libraries. The study examined the following: correlation between students' attitudes toward reading and their reading achievements as revealed in PISA 2009, nationwide survey results on reading, and studies on attitudes and motives for reading. Korean students' reading achievement is very high among the OECD countries but their reading attitude is not positive enough. The strong positive relationship between pleasure reading and reading achievement indicates the importance of the provision of ample collections at school libraries as well as library programs fostering independent, free-will reading. Reading programs at school libraries should cater to students' individual characteristics and needs, such as their sex, abilities, affective and cognitive attitudes, experiences, as well as the quantity, the formats, and the time of their reading, etc.

Factors Affecting the Baby Boom Generation's Preparation for Old Age (베이비붐 세대의 노후준비도에 영향을 미치는 요인)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the factors affecting the baby boom generation's preparation for old age, and based on that, it will provide foundational data to improve the baby boom generation's preparation for life in old age. According to the study results, with regard to their socio-demographic characteristics, their sex, age, health conditions, average monthly income, attitudes to old age, and anxiety about aging may have significant effects on their preparation for old age. In other words, the degree of preparation for old age is higher in women than men, those who are older, those having better health conditions, those with higher average monthly income, and those with better attitudes to old age, and those whose anxiety about aging is lower. Based on the above study results, the paper intends to make the following political suggestions: first, it is needed to develop preparation for old age services appropriately for each generation's needs and characteristics in consideration of their socio-demographic characteristics. Second, it is necessary to provide education for preparation for life in old age by steps and change their consciousness to enhance their attitudes to old age. Third, it is needed to develop and distribute a variety of mental health programs that can lower their anxiety about aging.

Food/Nutrition Attitudes, Views and Practices of Adults in Seoul Area (서울지역 성인의 식품.영양.건강 태도와 식품영양표시 활용실태)

  • Food/nutrition related views, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors were investigated for three hundred randomly selected men and women, aged 20-60 years, residing in Seoul metropolitan area. Food/nutrition views, attitudes, and beliefs were found to vary greatly between groups of different age, sex, education and income level. Adults of 20-35 years of age showed significantly less strong views about keeping traditional food habits, while exhibiting a significantly high level of acceptance towards the use of convenience foods as compared to the adults aged 36 years or older. Food safety was found to be a major concern to most of the subjects accounting 69.7% for pesticides residues in fresh produce items, 94.7% for food additives in processed food, and 56.3% for food poisoning in foods eaten outside of the home. Male adults aged 45 years or older showed a strong tendency to rely on a few promotional food products for the maintenance of their health and for them the development and implementation of a sensible feed nutritin/health education program including a way to avoid nutrition quackery might be beneficial. Eighty percent of the subjects were found to read food labels with higher rates shown among young adults and females. Due to the virtual absence of nutrition labeling however, the percentage of subjects who idicated that they are looking for the information on nutrient content was low (<10%) compared to the rates for other informations such as date of manufacture(80.2%), expiration data(55.8%), ingredients(40.9), and additives(40.9%). Ninety one percent of the subjects indicated that they would like to see the sources for nutrition label the nutritional value of the foods. The top five most frequently (68.3%), food packages(50.7%), and radio(43.3%). Health professionals such as physicians, nurses, and nutritionists/dietitians were utilized less frequently as sources of nutrition information than lay sources, with reported rate of only 38%, 22%, and 0.7%, respectively. These results collectively suggest that strategies are to be developed to provide accurate nutrition information to adults.

Nursing Student's Perceptions of Barriers on Sexuality : Sexuality Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (간호학생이 인지하는 성(Sexuality)건강 간호 장애 요인 : 성 태도와 신념에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify and describe attitudes and beliefs that might act as barriers to addressing patient sexuality concerns and to determine the extent to which these attitudes and beliefs are influenced by personal factors such as age, gender, education. The Sexuality Attitudes and Beliefs Survey was used to assess nursing students(N=214). Important barriers to addressing patient sexuality reported by the majority of the students included not making time to address the concerns (86.9%) and Feeling confident in ability to address patients' sexual concerns(76.2%). A statistically significant difference was found in scores based on sex(p=0.03) and religion(p=0.02). Results of this study have implications for educational programs in dealing with patient sexuality.

A Study of Relationship between Clothing Behavior and Needs for Exhibition and Autonomy among High School Girls (여고생의 의복행동과 과시 및 자율욕구와의 상관연구 -의복의 과시성, 유행, 교복자율화를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between five aspects of clothing behavior and needs for exhibition and autonomy among high schoolgirls. Five aspects of clothing behavior were studied: fashion interest, clothing exhibition, attitudes toward the abolition of the school uniform and control of school dress. A questionnaire of 20 items prepared by Kahng, Lee, and Creekmore was used to assess fashion interest and clothing exhibition. Assessment of attitudes toward the abolition of school uniform and control of school dress was made with questions devised for this study and included several modified items from Kim's questionnaire. Preferences for fashion style were determined by line drawings representing current fashion and outdated fashion. The questionnaires were administered to 341 second year senior high school girls from three types of schools. Statistical analysis was performed using the correlation coefficient, chi-square test, ANOVA, The results were: 1) The need for exhibition was positively related to clothing exhibition and fashion interest, that is, students who had a higher need for exhibition were more interested in clothing exhibition and fashion. 2) The need for autonomy was positively related to attitudes toward the abolition of school uniform and control of school dress that is, students who had a higher need for autonomy wanted the abolition of school uniform and less control of school dress. 3) Fashion interest was positively related to preference for fashion style, that is, students who a higher fashion interest prefered fashinable styles in the selection of new clothes. 4) Scores of clothing exhibition and attitudes toward loosening of control of school dress were significantly different among three types of school. The orders from highest to lowest are following: single-sex preparatory, coeducational preparatory, vocational high school.

Evaluations of Apparel Advertising, Fashion Involvement, and Social Attitudes (의류광고에 대한 평가, 유행몰입 및 사회적 태도에 관한 연구)

  • The objective of this study were to (1) investigate the relationship between evaluations of apparel advertising, fashion involvement, and social attitudes, (2) examine how evaluation of apparel advertising, fashion involvement, and social attitudes vary according to gender, and (3) investigate the possible differences in purchase attitudes toward the advertised apparels according to gender and advertisement slogan. Questionnaire for evaluations of apparel advertising was comprised of four sections; apparel advertising acceptance, evaluation of advertisement slogan, purchase attitude toward the advertised apparels, and perception of effective media for apparel advertising. For evaluation of advertisement slogan, 5 sets of apparel advertisements were selected. Each set had two advertisements; one advertisement contained an image-oriented slogan, while the other had a quality-oriented slogan. "The Social Attitude Scale' by Kerlinger and 'Fashion Involvement Index' by Tigert, Ring & King were used. All the items were selected on the Cronbach's alpha reliability. The subjects were 217 college male and famale students in Seoul; 60 were asked about purchase attitude toward the image-oriented slogan, 60 purchase attitude toward the quality-oriented slogan, and 97 all the items included in evaluation of the two slogans. The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient, X2-test, t-test, two-way ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis. The results of the study were the followings. 1. Fashion involvement had positive relationship with apparel advertising acceptance. The higher the level of conservative attitude males had, the more positive attitude they had in fashion involvement and apparel advertising acceptance. Subjects high in conservative attitude, fashion involvement, and apparel advertising acceptance. Subjects high in conservative attitude, fashion involvement, and apparel advertising acceptance had more positive in purchase of the advertised apparels. 2. Females high in apparel advertising acceptance were more favorable toward image-oriented advertisements. 3. Fashion involvement and apparel advertising acceptance were significantly higher in females than in males. Liberal attitude was significantly higher in males than in females. Evaluation of advertisement slogan did not differ according to gender. 4. Males perceived 'TV' was the most effective media for apparel advertising while females perceived 'display' was the most effective. 5. No significant interactions between advertisement slogan and gender were found in purchase attitude of the advertising apparels. 6. Apparel advertising acceptance was influenced by fashion involvement, social attitude, and sex. The explanatory power of the three variables was 17%.
