  • This paper presents the numerical analysis of process of sludge drying to know the characteristics of design parameters and develop the new process plant. Finite volume method and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model were used to analogy the sludge drying furnace. It has been attempted to perform the disposal of sewage sludge such as simple reclaiming and dumping in sea and incineration. Currently, these methods are restricted by national or international government regulations. The drying process is adopted as an effective method for sewage sludge treatment. However sewage sludge makes it difficult to treat with a large volume at the real drying process plant because of its own complicated physical, chemical, and thermal properties. The final design value of moisture content with 10% of the dried sludge can be obtained through the simulated outputs in this study.

  • This research analyzed the effect of a basic environmental facility siting on the difference in land prices using a case study of Jisan sewage disposal plant in Daegu metropolitan city. To do so, two buffer zones were generated around Jisan sewage disposal plant to 400m at an interval of 200m as a setback distance and 822 officially announced individual land prices were acquired from Korea Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport(MOLIT). Paired samples t-test was performed to compare the mean difference in land prices before and after Jisan sewage disposal plant siting. Results show that the mean land price from each buffer zone was slightly increased after the siting and the difference was statistically significant. Also, the results indicate that the mean land price within 200m was lower than that between 200m and 400m before the siting while there was not different in the mean land price for both buffer zones after the siting. Because Jisan sewage disposal plant did not have a stench and a larger capacity and its surrounding areas were blended by commercial and residential uses, a sewage disposal plant siting had little effect on the fall in land prices unlike previous studies. The findings from this research will provide new reference data for local government and local people with conflicting views on the siting of a basic environmental facility.

  • The purpose of the study is to optimally manage sewage treatment plant with analysis of phosphorus contribution and improvement of water quality contributing rate in the effect of inflowing point of effluent and Pal-Dang lake after reducing T-P discharge from large scale public sewage treatment plant at upstream of Pal-Dang lake. Also, this study, for enforcement of T-P in effluent, plans optimal management of effluent T-P through examining propriety of environmental, technological, and economical aspect such as water quality standard of domestic and foreign T-P and related policy. In regarding optimal management of T-P discharged from public sewage treatment plant located in upstream of Pal-Dang lake, the study drew following conclusions. With the optimal management of public sewage treatment plant, it showed that a pollution level became higher in the order of Sumgang E in South-Han river, C in Dalcheon, B1 B2, A in North-Han river, and J in Kyungancheon, and it is required reduction of T-P first. The highest value in analysis of benefit-costs from sewage treatment plant in the selected research area was Kyungan B, and the others are with the order of Jojong A, Bokha A, Kyungan A, and Yanghwa A. With result of this study, all 14 areas are required more enforced phosphorus treatment. The study resulted that the most top priority areas were Hangang F, Sumgang B, and Gyungan A, top priority areas were Bokha A, Dalcheon B, and Cheongmi A, priority areas were Hangang E, Heukcheon A, Gyungan B, and Jojong A, and potential areas were Sumgang A, Yanghwa A, Dalcheon A, and Hangang D. It seems to be appropriate to apply 0.2 mg/L of T-P treatment for water supply source reservation, 0.5 mg/L for the other areas by locally, and 0.2~0.5 mg/L for biological nitrogen phosphorus treatment method and 0.5~1 mg/L for Conventional Activated Sludge by technologically. Also, it may be appropriate to apply 0.2 mg/L for the most top priority area(I), 0.3 mg/L for the top priority area(II), 0.4 mg/L for priority area(III), and 0.5 mg/L for potential area(IV) by the separation of priority area.

  • This study investigates the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics and relationships among water quality parameters, which based on 6 years' data(from 1989 to 1994) measured at 16 stations on Jinhae Bay. The results of these analysis, monthly variations range between surface and bottom layer of water quality had a tendency to increase and decrease, and appeared to be at the maximum value in August. The relationships between concentration of COD ana nutrients(DIN and DIP), which obtained by correlation analysis of water quality, were shown $85\%$ and $74\%$, respectively. Using the cluster analysis to develop the division of the sea basin by the dendrogram, before and after dredging of Masan bay and operating a sewage disposal plant, the variation characteristics of water quality of Jinhae Bay were discussed. Through it, we can see the serious pollution of northen sea basin of Jinhae Bay(B2) although dredging Masan bay and operating the sewage disposal plant. As the results, it doesn't appear the improvement effect of water quality in spite of carrying out the effort of water quality improvement.

  • In this paper, the ventilation efficiencies of an underground sewage disposal plant were investigated for ventilating system without fan, ventilating system with eleven cross flow fans and ventilating system with sixteen cross flow fans by numerical method. It has been found that the air change effectiveness of the system without fan was predicted 0.44. It means that an additional ventilating equipment is needed to maintain good indoor air quality. For the ventilating system with sixteen cross flow fans, the air change effectiveness was predicted 0.55. The air change effectiveness of the ventilating system with eleven cross flow fans was predicted 0.51. It is known that the air change effectiveness above 0.5 is enough to eliminate pollutant and bad smell in the indoor. Therefore, it is recommended to select the ventilating system with eleven cross flow fans for the underground sewage disposal plant in an economic point of view.

  • In this study, the major emission procedures and emission characteristics were identified at the site of sewage treatment plant which is one of the major sources of ammonia. At the same time the emission factors and emission rates were estimated. In order to calculate the emission flux, we used a Dynamic Flux Chamber(DFC), which is found to be a proper sampling devise for area sources such as sewage treatment plant. It was found that the most stable sampling condition was when the stirrer's speed of DFC was 120RPM, and it would be the best time to take a sample 60 minutes later after setting the chamber. The relatively higher flux was shown in Autumn compared to summer and winter. Annual ammonia emission rates procedures were calculated as $906.32{\mu}g/activity-ton$, $1,114.72{\mu}g/activity-ton$ and $437.53{\mu}g/activity-ton$ each at the primary settling basin, aeration basin and the final settling basin, respectively. The ammonia emission rate the highest at in the aeration basin according to this test. This results was due to that the surface of aeration basin or the final settling basin is relatively wider than the primary settling basin.

  • To figure out the removal efficiency of indicator and pathogenic bacteria by unit processes of a sewage treatment plant using activated sludge process, analyses were done for incoming sewage, influent and effluent of primary clarifier, aeration tank, secondary clarifier and final discharge conduit of the plant. A matrix of bacterial items (average of bacterial reduction [log/ml], p value of paired t-test, number of decreased cases of twenty analyses, removal percentage only for decreased cases) between incoming sewage and final effluent of the plant were heterotrophic plate counts (1.54, 0.000, 20, 95.01), total coliforms (1.38, 0.000, 19, 83.94), fecal coliforms (0.90, 0.000, 20, 94.84), fecal streptococci (0.90, 0.000, 20, 98.08), presumptive Salmonella (0.23, 0.561, 7, 99.09), and presumptive Shigella (1.02, 0.002, 15, 92.98). Total coliforms, fecal coliforms, heterotrophic plate counts, and fecal streptococci showed highest decrease through secondary clarifier about 1-log (p<0.001) between 88% and 96%, and primary clarifier represented the significant (p<0.05) decrease. However, final effluent through discharge conduit showed higher total coliforms and fecal streptococci than effluent of secondary clarifier (p<0.05). In addition, final effluent once violated the water quality standard while effluent of secondary clarifier satisfied the standard. Hence some control measures including elimination of deposits in discharge conduit or disinfection of final effluent are necessary.

  • To acquire preliminary data for the control of total nitrogen (TN) in S sewage treatment plant, which processes merging food waste and sewage, the effect of reject water on the total nitrogen in the effluent was examined in this study. Water quality data for the plant during the winter period were applied to calculate the mass balance. It was calculated that at least more than 231 kg/d TN should be removed to control the TN concentration in the effluent. Assuming 18 ppm as the goal TN concentration in the effluent, about 941 kg/d TN should be removed from this plant. Approximately 10% more TN should be removed than at present to achieve this result. It was observed that dewatering the filtrate had a considerably greater effect on the total nitrogen in the effluent than the reject waters. The dewatered filtrate contained 1,399kg/d TN. The contribution of the dewatered filtrate to the TN concentration in the effluent was 0.183, which was 7 to 23 times greater than the other reject waters. In addition, the amount of total nitrogen from the reject water, with the exception of the dewatering filtrate, was lower than the amount of TN that should be removed from S sewage treatment plant. Therefore, it was concluded that one of the most effective methods for controlling the TN concentration in effluent was the removal of the TN contained in the dewatering filtrate.

  • For the sustainable management of marine ecosystem in Masan Bay, we have to assess the carrying capacity and standard of target water quality. In this research, we assume that all pollutants loads are treated in Dukdong sewage treatment plant, then we simulate the physical-biological model for prediction water quality for the achievement of standard water quality. In 2001 year, for the achievement of COD 2.5 mg/L, we need to reduce COD $90\%$, nitrogen $30\%$, phosphate $90\%$ than that of the present value, According to these results, the water quality of sewage treatment plant is required to treat COD 13.5 mg/L, nitrogen 33.3 mg/L, phosphate 6,0 mg/L. If the sewage treatment plant will be expanded much larger in 2011, it will need to be treated in COD 6.6 mg/L, nitrogen 2.5 mg/L, phosphate 5 mg/L for the achievement of water quality standard in COD 2.5 mg/L.

  • Since the first sewage treatment plant was constructed in 1976, the sewerage systems of Korea have been rapidly expanded. As of the end of 1991, 22 sewage treatment plants with total capacity of 5.4 million tons/day are in operation which is equivalent of 3395 total daily sewage generation. Total extension of sewer 39.534 km in 1990 which is 55% of the target extension for the year 2001. However, the most sewage treatment plants employ activated sludge process which may not be suitable for medium and/or small scale plants. The poor existing sewer systems do not effectively collect and transport sewage to adversely affect the function of sewage treatment plant. To select the appropriate treatment system, the cities are classified into 3 categories such as large and medium size inland cities, small size cities and coastal cities. Considering the criteria suggested during this study, appropriate treatment processes were selected for each category. Conventional activated sludge process and step aeration process were found to be the most appropriate for big inland cities while biological nutrient removal processes should be considered for the cities discharge the effluent to lakes or reservoirs. RBC or Oxidation Ditch process might be appropriate for the medium size cities while several processes which do not require skilled operation and maintenance were suggested for the small cities. Ocean discharge after primary treatment can be considered for some east coast cities, Appropriate methodology to rehabilitate the existing sewers and strategy to convert combined sewer system to separate sewer system were proposed. This paper also include the appropriate management system for industrial wastewater, sludge and nightsoil.
