  • Pilot study was performed to examine the feasibility of the pond system for further polishing of treatment wetland effluent from December 2000 to June 2001. The wetland system used for the experiment was highly effective to treat the sewage during the growing season, but it was less effective and its effluent was still high to discharge to the receiving water body. Therefore, the wetland effluent may need further treatment to prevent water quality degradation. Pond system could be used to hold and further polish the wetland effluent during the winter season and ots feasibility was evaluated in this study. Additional water quality improvement was apparent in the pond system during winter season, and the pond effluent could be good enough to meet the effluent water quality standards if it is properly managed. Timing of the pond effluent discharge appears to be critical for pond system management because it is a closed system and whole water quality constituents are affected by physical, chemical, and biological pond environments. Once algae started to grow in mid-April, constituents in the pond water column interact each other actively and its control becomes more complicated. Therefore, upper layer of the pond water column which is clearer than the lower layer my need be discharged in March right after ice cover melted. In the experiment, water quality of the upper water column was markedly clear in March than ant other times probably because of freezing-thawing effect. The remaining lower water column could be further treated by natural purification as temperature goes up or diluted with better quality of wetland effluent for appropriate water uses. This study demonstrated the feasibility of pond system for subsequent management of wetland effluent during the winter season, however, more study is needed for field application.

  • It is well known that we should take 2L of drinking water per day to maintain our health. The drinking water quality is becoming worse owing to sewage discharge and industrial wastewater. Surface water is polluted by various kinds of contaminants and ground water were known as clean and unpolluted water, but through recent many reports the ground waters are also contaminated by waste disposal and intrusion of organic and bacterial movement. This research was undertaken to make a water index of water contamination by referringcations cations and anions. NH$_{4}$, Fe, Mn, and Pb are chosen as cations and $NO_3$, Cl, and $SO_4$ ions are chosen as anions to make a index, and the following water index was made as the contamination index. (Fe+Mn+Pb)/0.7+$(NH_4+NO_3+Cl+SO_4)$/10.5<6.0 By using ton Chromatography the cations and anions are rapidly analyzed and plotting the analyzed data to the equation, we can easily get the degree of contaminations by avoiding analysis of over 37 water parameters in several days. Of course this index of water contamination is not perfect and detail one, but in case of emergent case or to know the overall trends of contamination, it is convenient to use this index. Among the tested 5 kinds of samples the ground water showed contamination index of 6.87. Authors used the already published healthy index and tasty index and differentiated their degrees in detail.

  • The water quality in Yongil Bay is getting worse due to the sewage and the waste water from the surrounding industrial complex. The study aims to simulate the current system that is necessary to build ecosystem model for the optium water quality control and clarify the correlation of current system characteristics with water quality in Yongil Bay. To clarify the characteristics of coastal water movement system and verify the applicability of the 3-D model, the current system was simulated using 3-D model baroclinic model which considers tidal current and density effects. As the results of numerical experiments, it is proved the 3-D model is the most applicable on appearing the current system of the stratificated Yongil Bay difference of density. Form the results of simulation considered tidal current only, it can be clarified that the water body flows in the inner bay through the bottom layer and flows out the outer bay through the surface layer in Yongil Bay. And the fresh water from the Hyongsan river and the thermal discharge form POSCO have a little effect on the current system in Yongil Bay, but the diffusion of heat and salt has an important effect upon the formation of the density stratification of the water quality distribution is closely related with the current structure characteristics as well as the tidal residual current system in Yongil Bay.

  • The water quality in Yeongil Bay is getting worse due to the sewage and the waste water from the surrounding industrial complex The study aims to simulate the current system that is necessary to built ecosystem model for the optium water quality control and clarify the correlation of current system characteristics with water quality in Yongil Bay. To clarify the characteristics of coastal water movement system and verify the applicability of the 3-D model, the current system was simulated using 3-D baroclinic model considered tidal current and density effects. As the results of numerical experiments, it is proved the 3-D model is the most appliable on the Yongil Bay where current flows slowly and the flow direction is varied by depths. From the results of simulation considered tidal current only, It am be clearly said the water in Yongil Bay flows in through the surface layer and flows out through the bottom layer. And the fresh water from the Hyongsan river and the heated discharge from POSCO have little effect on the current structure in Yonggil Bay, but have and important effect upon the density structure by diffusion of heat and salt. • Enrichment in nutrients coming from urban sewage outfalls can lead to eutrophication in coastal areas, which can also change the species composition and community structure of macro algal communities. We investigated the structure of the macro algal community within three rocky shores in order to assess any possible differences in their characteristics. Site 1 was located near Tongyeong city's sewage outfall, Site 2 was located near a public beach area, and Site 3 faced open channel of the Ocean. All three sites were located within the same stretch of the coast, where Site 2 was located between sites 1 and 3. We measured the nutrient concentration in water and the tissue nitrogen content in macro algae samples. Nutrients in the water column surrounding site 1 were high in ammonium ($30.2\pm1.8{\mu}M$), nitrate ($26.2{\pm}0.1{\mu}M$), and phosphate ($2.7{\pm}0.1{\mu}M$) content, and were characterized by low numbers of macroalgal species and species and a low species diversity index. In contrast, site 3 exhibited relatively low nutrient concentration levels and a high number of macroalgal species and a high species diversity index. Comparative analysis showed that the tissue nitrogen content of macroalgae were significantly (P<0.05) affected by the nutrient concentration in the water column. The tissue nitrogen content of green algae within site 1 was higher than the others sites. However, the tissue nitrogen content of brown algae was similar at all three sites. Thus, the tissue nitrogen content of macro algae and the macro algal community structure of intertidal rocky shores were dependent on location and the performance of macroalgal communities was dependent on water quality.

  • The efficiency of sewage treatment was analyzed by statistical method based on the water quality and operation data of the sewage treatment plant applying the oxidation method. The obtained water quality data were pH, temperature, BOD, SS, T-N, ${NH_4}^+-N$, and T-P of influent and discharge water. Data analysis was performed by correlation analysis, ANOVA analysis, and cluster analysis. As a result of the statistical analysis, the influent flow rate in the sewage treatment plant was the highest in summer. The average inflow flow rate was $3.000m^3/s$. According to Box plot results, COD, and T-P concentrations of effluents were not significantly different from season to season. The Pearson correlation analysis showed strong positive correlation between BOD, COD, T-N, and T-P in influent flow. Seasonal BOD and T-N concentrations were highest in winter and COD and T-P in seasonal influences. BOD showed a strong negative correlation with the water temperature, but showed a positive correlation with other operating factors such as HRT, SRT and C/N. The higher the influent temperature, the lower the BOD concentration. Therefore, retention time was shortened and BOD treatment efficiency was lowered. It was found that T-N had a higher retention time and a higher concentration than DO concentration. On the other hand, T-P did not show a significant correlation with operating factors.

  • This study uses HEC-RAS for the quantitative aspects and the QUAL2E model for the qualitative aspects of the flow of urban streams, where the natural recovery system is applied. The instream flow of the small streams is estimated using the numerical model by verifying the existing data with the acquired data. The characteristics of the model reach place more weight on the drought discharge around the ordinary discharge, and this is caused by the natural recovery system that maintains the existing bank. The data of direct discharge to the sewage treatment plant through the inception pipe, BOD, DO, temperature, and so forth, are the official data from the department of environment. Considering the characteristics of small streams, the factors for the QUAL2E model are estimated with the focus on the hydraulic conditions and the stream view. This study proposes the future improvements for the natural recovery system by investigating the practical use of the waterfront and the application of the proper instream flow. Also, the hydraulic and hydrological investigation of the covering rate by the natural vegetation and the meandering by the varying river way is performed.

  • An eco-friendly water purifier was developed using natural minerals, plants, and sludge from water purification plants. A wastewater complex treatment system using this water purification agent was developed. The wastewater complex treatment system goes through the process of inflow of contaminated water, input of water purification agent, operation of a pressurized flotation device, sludge flotation, sludge collection and treatment water discharge. This device was applied to the removal of green algae in livestock desorption liquid, broiler washing water, factory wastewater, sewage treatment plant and pond to obtain excellent removal rate. The use of natural water purification agents for organic waste purification has not been investigated.

  • The watershed of Gohyeon Stream was divided into the 10 sub-basins, and 19 sampling points were selected in their tributaries, which the characteristics of the water quality and pollution loads variance were investigated for during the rainy and dry seasons. The results of water quality analysis revealed that the upper watershed(T1~T8) of Gohyeon Stream had a feature of rural area, and its lower watershed(T9~T19) had a feature of the municipal area. The non-point pollution loads of the tributaries were estimated with 2,063, 601, 365, and 45 ton/yr of SS, COD, DIN, and DIP, respectively. The pollution loads of the parameters except DIP were generated about 60% during the rainy season, which suggested that a precipitation significantly influenced on the discharge of non-point source pollution. Meanwhile, the non-point pollution load of DIP was generated about 60% during the ordinary and dry seasons, which suggested that control of a phosphorus pollution source was significantly required during these seasons. Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that SS pollution source of the upper watershed was definitely different from that of the lower watershed, that is, the pollution load from the upper watershed was mainly caused by the discharge of SS due to soil erosion in the farmland and forest land during the rainy season, and that of the lower watershed by the discharge of sewage and municipal run-off.

  • This study aims to identify the characteristics of organic matter and pollutant sources using water quality and stable isotope ratios (δ15N, δ13C) of the two inflow tributaries (Gulpo (GP) and Anyang (AY) streams). Water samples were analyzed in June and September 2018, and the results showed that the concentrations of nutrients, such as TN and NO3-N, were increased at GP4, which is located at the downstream of sewage treatment facilities(STFs). TOC and TN ratios showed a strong positive correlation (R2 = 0.77, p<0.01) at all points except for GP4. The results of GP's stable isotope ratio analysis do not appear to be a constant cluster compared to AY because GPs with large amounts of pollutants from the industry (metal processing companies, etc.) have less tributary, shorter waterway and significantly different external sources. This could be attributed to different sources of external inflow despite its smaller number of tributaries and shorter waterways than AY. In the first half of the year, the δ155N of GP4 was affected by discharge of STFs, while AY3 seemed to have an influence of tributary than the discharge of STFs. Consequently, using water quality, stable isotope ratio and C/N, the sources of contamination in two streams with different contaminants were identified and origin was estimated.
