  • This study investigated the characteristics of two aerodynamic indices, PTP (Phonation threshold pressure) and PTF (Phonation threshold flow) in patients with ADSD (adductor spasmodic dysphonia) and to see if two new aerodynamic indices can differentiate between normal and ADSD group. Additionally, PTP and PTF values were compared in terms of overall severity of ADSD in the patient group. The severity of ADSD was rated on a 7-point rating scale by two experienced speech language pathologists. The Kay Elemetrics Phonatory Aerodynamic System (PAS) (Kay Elemetrics Corp., Lincoln Park, NJ) was used to collect PTP and PTF measurements from 16 female normal subjects, 31 female patients with ADSD. Significantly lower PTF values (P< 0.05) were observed in ADSD when compared to those of normal control. Also, significantly lower PTF values in severe ADSD patients (P<.001). However, PTP could not distinguish patients with ADSD from control groups (P=0.119) and among the ADSD groups according to the severity (P=0.177). Consequently, PTF was more sensitive than PTP which might differentiate between normal speakers and ADSD and among different levels of severity within ADSD, suggesting that PTF could be a useful diagnostic parameter to measure the aerodynamic function of ADSD and provide the neurolaryngeal dysfunction in patients with ADSD.

  • Currently, polysomnography is essential to diagnose sleep-related breathing disorders. However, there are several disadvantages to polysomnography, such as the requirement for multiple sensors and a long reading time. In this paper, we propose a system for predicting the severity of sleep-related breathing disorders at home utilizing measurable elements in a wearable device. To predict severity, the variables were refined through a three-step variable selection process, and the refined variables were used as inputs into three machine-learning models. As a result of the study, random forest models showed excellent prediction performance throughout. The best performance of the model in terms of F1 scores for the three threshold criteria of 5, 15, and 30 classified as the AHI index was about 87.3%, 90.7%, and 90.8%, respectively, and the maximum performance of the model for the three threshold criteria classified as the RDI index was approx 79.8%, 90.2%, and 90.1%, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate yield loss due to soybean leaf spot disease caused by Cercospora sojina Hara and to determine the economic threshold level. The investigations revealed highly significant correlations between disease severity (diseased leaf area) and yield components (pod number per plant, total grain number per plant, total grain weight per plant, percent of ripened grain, weight of hundred seed, and yield). The correlation coefficients between leaf spot severity and each component were -0.90, -0.90, -0.92, -0.99, -0.90 and -0.94, respectively. The yield was inversely proportional to the diseased leaf area increased. The regression equation, yield prediction model, between disease severity (x) and yield (y) was obtained as y = -3.7213x + 354.99 ($R^2$ = 0.9047). Based on the yield prediction model, economic injury level and economic threshold level could be set as 3.3% and 2.6% of diseased leaf area of soybean.

  • The influences of powdery mildew caused by Sphaerotheca fusca were assessed on cucumber to verify the economic injury level and yield response. Based on the relation of disease severity and yield response, economic threshold was determined by grading the disease severity of powdery mildew. Yield loss simulation due to damage of powdery mildew was conducted by defoliation of lower cucumber leaves in two seasons. The minimum number of leaves was 10 in spring season and 13 in autumn season which made no distinct difference on cucumber yield. The whole yields of cucumber was reduced as the disease severity was increased. Therefore occurrence of powdery mildew have a negative effect on cucumber yield. The regression equation between disease severity and yield loss showed Y=-57.237x+6143.1, $R^2=0.9628$. This equation suggests the disease severity of economic threshold is 17.6%, which is 3% reduction point of yield based on yield and economic relations. These results suggest that application of fungicide should be needed when 1 or 2 leaves of cucumber are infected by powdery mildew in the growing season.

  • Recently, an increase in the occurrence of sudden local flooding of great volume and short duration due to global climate changes has occasioned the significant danger and loss of life and property in Korea as well as most parts of the world. Such a local flood that usually occurs as the result of intense rainfall over small regions rises quite quickly with little or no advance warning time to prevent flood damage. To prevent the local flood damage, it is important to quickly predict the flood severity for flood events exceeding a threshold discharge that may cause the flood damage for inland areas. The aim of this study is to develop the NFI (New Flood Index) measuring the severity of floods in small ungauged catchments for use in local flood predictions by the regression analysis between the NFI and rainfall patterns. Flood runoff hydrographs are generated from a rainfall-runoff model using the annual maximum rainfall series of long-term observations for the two study catchments. The flood events above a threshold assumed as the 2-year return period discharge are targeted to estimate the NFI obtained by the geometric mean of the three relative severity factors, such as the flood magnitude ratio, the rising curve gradient, and the flooding duration time. The regression results show that the 3-hour maximum rainfall depths have the highest relationships with the NFI. It is expected that the best-fit regression equation between the NFI and rainfall characteristics can provide the basic database of the preliminary information for predicting the local flood severity in small ungauged catchments.

  • A field investigation was carried out for two years to analyze yield loss due to soybean anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum truncatum and to determine its economic threshold limit. Anthracnose severity in terms of % diseased pods was negatively correlated with yield, number of normal seeds per plant and number of pods per plant, and positively correlated with % abnormal seeds with correlation coefficients of -0.85, -0.78, -0.64, and 0.80, respectively. A simple linear regression model was obtained as Y=-1.7781X+164.22 with $R^2$=0.8092, when the soybean yields (Y) were predicted using anthracnose severity (X) as an independent variable. The yield levels could be predicted as high as 80.92%. Based on this equation, spray threshold without economic considerations was estimated as 6.9 in % pods infected with anthracnose. Economic threshold limit and economic spray threshold able to compensate the costs of fungicide sprays were determined as 11.9% and 9.5%, respectively.

  • The experiments were carried out in fields for two years from 2008 to assess yield losses of squash due to powdery mildew caused by Sphaerotheca fuliginea and to determine its economic thresholds. Powdery mildew disease was first observed in late June, about 50 days after field-transplanting, progressed rapidly during late July to early August, and began to reduce from late August. Powdery mildew severity was negatively correlated with squash yields. A positive correlation was observed between fruit weight and % marketable fruits. A simple linear regression model was obtained as Y=-10.399 X + 6607.5 with $R^2$ = 0.9700 when squash yields (Y) was predicted using powdery mildew severity as an independent variable(X). Spray threshold for maximizing squash yields without economic considerations was estimated as 6.5% in terms of leaf lesion area with powdery mildew. Economic threshold and economic spray threshold able to compensate the costs of fungicide sprays were determined as 21.6% and 17.3% in leaf lesion area, respectively.

  • Objects: This study aimed to evaluate the role of somatic delusion on the pain perception in patients with schizophrenia. It was hypothesized that pressure pain thresholds would be rather higher in schizophrenic patients who had somatic delusion than patients with other delusion. Methods The subjects were consisted of 3 groups, 23 men with schizophrenia who had somatic delusion, 25 men with schizophrenia who had other delusion, and 22 normal healthy controls. By using Algometer, pressure pain thresholds were examined to subjects on three non-tender sites with 6 weeks interval. The severity of delusion was evaluated in both patient groups. Statistically, Chi-square test, One-way ANOVA, Multivariate ANOVA, and Scheffe's test were used. Results : 1) There was significant difference between somatic and other delusion groups and normal control group at initial stage. 6 weeks later even when severity of delusion was thought to be ameliorated, this finding were sustained. 2) The severity of the components of delusion, conviction and preoccupation, were significantly decreased in both somatic delusion group and other delusion group according to the time interval. The decrements of the severity of delusion seems to be related with changes in pressure pain thresholds in both patient groups. Conclusions : We re-confirmed that both schizophrenic patient groups showed higher pressure pain thresholds compared to normal healthy control. However we failed to find the role of somatic delusion on pain perception in schizophrenia. Delusion, including somatic delusion, as a whole, seems to affect the increased level of pressure pain threshold due to attention deficit and decreased motivation in patients with schizophrenia.

  • This research was performed to establish economic threshold (ET) for rice sheath blight disease with the cultivar Odeabyeo. Total yield and yield components, such as the panicle number per hill, the spikelet per panicle, the percent ripened grain and the thousand grain weight were evaluated depending on the disease severity of sheath blight on rice, respectively. Significant negative correlation between the percent of diseased hill (PDH) and total yield was observed (r = -0.93). Moreover, negative correlation coefficients were found between PDH and spikelet per panicle, and percent ripened grain (r = -0.66 and -0.77, respectively). There were no correlations between PDH and the panical number per hill, and a thousand grain weight, respectively. In this study, economic threshold level on sheath blight disease on rice was established on 7.8% of PDH.

  • Many car manufacturers have frequently adopted an aggressive inflator and a lower threshold speed for airbag deployment in order to meet an injury requirement for unbolted occupant at high speed crash test. Consequently, today's occupant safety restraint system has a weakness due to an airbag induced injury at low speed crash event. This paper proposes a new crash algorithm to improve the weakness by suppressing airbag deployment at low speed crash event in case of belted condition. The proposed algorithm consists of two major blocks-crash severity algorithm and deployment logic block. The first block decides crash severity with two levels by means of velocity and crash energy calculation from acceleration signal. The second block implemented by simple AND/OR logic combines the crash severity level and seat belt status information to generate firing commands for airbag and belt pretensioner. Furthermore, it can be extended to adopt additional sensor information from passenger presence detection sensor and safing sensor. A simulation using real crash data for a 1,800cc passenger vehicle has been conducted to verify the performance of proposed algorithm.
