  • Piled raft foundations are usually used to reduce total and differential settlements of superstructures. In the piled raft foundations, the raft is often on its own able to provide adequate bearing capacity and only few widely spaced piles are added to the foundation to keep settlements be1ow a certain limit. In this paper, experimental studies on the load sharing ratio between piles and raft are carried out. Also, for evaluating the application of optimum design technique using a genetic algorithm, optimal locations of files are compared with the results of laboratory model tests. from tile results of laboratory model tests, there are found that the load sharing ratio between files and raft is depended on the number of piles and stiffness of raft, and the optimal locations of piles became concentrated on the middle of rafts. From these results of laboratory model tests, the optimum technique using a genetic algorithm is acknowledged to the application in the piled raft.

Simplified model for analysis of soil-foundation system under cyclic pushover loading

  • A numerical study of soil-foundation system under monotonic and cyclic pushover loading is conducted, taking into account both material and geometric nonlinearities. A complete and refined 3D finite element (FE) model, using contact condition and allowing separation between soil and foundation, is implemented and used in order to evaluate the nonlinear relationship between applied vertical forces and induced settlements. Based on the obtained curve, a simplified model is proposed, in which the soil inelasticity is satisfactorily represented by two vertical springs with trilinear behavior law, and the foundation uplifting is insured by gap elements. Results from modeling soil-foundation system supporting a bridge pier have shown that the simplified model is able to capture irreversible settlements induced by cyclic rocking, due to soil inelasticity and vertical loading, as well as large rotations due to foundation uplifting.

  • The Nakdong River in Korea has formed a delta area .called the Kimhae Plain near the river mouth. Its clay deposit is unusually thick (up to 60m) compared with the clays deposited in other parts of the world. Some parts of the area has been reclaimed with the height of approximately 5 to 7m after installing vertical drains for the development of important new industrial complexes. Settlement measurements were taken during the reclamation works on the soft ground, and it was revealed that the measured settlements were extremely higher than predicted. This paper discusses possible reasons on unusual large settlements from depositional environments of Kimhae clay.

  • The piled raft foundation Is an innovative design concept to reduce both the maximum settlement and differential settlements caused by concentrated building loads and load eccentricities, and also to reduce the bending moments of the raft. The main concern given in the design of piled raft foundations is proper judgments both of relative proportions of loads carried by the raft and piles, and of the effect of the pile support on the maximum and differential settlements In the present study, the piled raft foundation used in the foundation system of Richensia Building at Youido, Seoul is introduced and is carried out analyzing the results of field tests such as plate load tests, large plate load test, pile load test, and piled raft load test.

  • This paper is a preliminary study to interpret method of landscape evaluation of "Taek-li-ji", and old Book of Settlements in korea, of which concept would be based on 'li' and 'qi':'substance of the earth'(地理) and 'its transform'(生利) as well as 'substance of human being and its transformed human mind'(人心). The 'Landscape' (山水) of Taek-li-ji, character of case study, might be built on practical landscape sources. Concept and theoretical basis of evaluation of Taek-li-ji, mentioned in this paper, and the second intention of Taek-li-ji, which is done in may previous work, can be earned good result, for an interpretation method of rural landscape of Taek-li-ji, and will be proposed continued case studies about real landscapes of the settlements of the 'Landscape' in Taek-li-ji.

  • In this study, it was proposed that an equation for predicting consolidation settlement on soft clay ground, which separate total settlement into primary and secondary consolidation settlement equation. The consolidation settlements by the proposed equation and by the measured settlements from laboratory model test were compared and verified for its application. It was appeared that the proposed equation from the laboratory model test approach to be more realistic comparing to !the result of Terzaghi's equation. From the above application, it was concluded that the final settlement prediction by. the Hyperbolic, Asaoka methods is needed to the initial settlement but the proposed equation could be much applicable in the lacking condition of measured data of the initial period.

  • In this paper the use of panchromatic KOMPSAT-1 imagery is proposed to provide detailed information on built-up areas in suburban regions. In order to derive this information a texture analysis is utilized. In the next processing step census data are incorporated in order to perform refined demographic analysis. Assuming that the population lives in settlements rather than in agricultural areas, the census data are assigned to the actual residential areas within each census unit. Using this information a number of questions can be addressed which cannot be answered by statistical data alone.

  • Following the ratification of Vienna Convention for Ozone Layer Protection and Montreal Protocol, Indonesia will implement the phasing-out of to halon at end 1996. Questions are increasing especially from the users where halon has used for many years as the most effective fire extinguishing agent, concerning halon substitutes, alternative systems as well as the handling and utilization of the existing halon. Halon can still be used for critical and essential uses, however, such usage has been gradually eliminated, due to the emergence of halon-like replacement. A concept of halon banking system is proposed to considered, taking into account several aspects such as enforced regulation, institutional involvement technology as well as financing. This paper gives a general overview regarding phase-out implementation, alternative extinguishing systems and concept on halon banking system with special reference to Indonesian case.

From Prominent 17th Century Colonial Dutch Settlements to Modern Indonesian Urban Centers? The Different Destinies of Banten, Ambon, Jakarta, and Malacca and their Cultural Heritage

  • The Dutch arrived in the islands that now compose Indonesia in the 17th century, settling first in Banten (1600) and Ambon (1605) before establishing Batavia (1619) and taking over Malacca (1641) from the Portuguese. Referring to this network of strategic bases throughout the Nusantara region, this paper uses the element of urban cultural heritage to examine these four major trade hubs experienced very different destinies as a result of Dutch decisions. It also explores how shifts in political power after Indonesia's independence influenced Jakarta's dominance in modern-day Indonesia. The paper suggests that Dutch opportunism and strategic visions underpinned the decision to make Jakarta the center of colonial power in the 17th century century. It also concludes that Jakarta's continued importance in political control and policies explains why it retained its position after Indonesia's independence, and these have been supported by recent policy measures. Finally, this paper concludes that, despite its Dutch origins, urban cultural heritage has been embraced by Indonesians.

Leveraging computational power, the methodology facilitates the autonomous exploration and evaluation of innovative layout options, considering architectural principles, legal standards, and client re-quirements. Through comprehensive simulation tests across various apartment types, the research demonstrates the DRL approach's effec-tiveness in generating efficient spatial arrangements that align with current design trends and meet predefined performance objectives. The comparative analysis of AI-generated layouts with those designed by professionals validates the methodology's applicability and potential in enhancing architectural design practices by offering novel, optimized spatial configuration solutions.
