The data on the pile load tests performed on 35 large drilled shafts are analyzed to investigate the load-settlement characteristics of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks. Generally, the settlement of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks is too small to determine the ultimated load with application of the regulation in design code for either the total settlement or the residual settlement. Therefore, to determine the yield load of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks, p(load)-logS (settlement) curve method, which has been proposed originally for the driven pile, was applied to the investigation on the data of the pile load tests. This technique shows that the yield load can be determined accurately and easily rather than other conventional techniques such as P-S, logp-logS, S-logt, and P-S curve methods. An empirical equation is proposed to represent the relationship between pile load and settlement before the yield loading condition. And the settlement of piles was related with the depth embedded in rock as well as rock properties. Based on the investigation on the data of pile load tests, the resonable regulations f3r both the total settlement and the residual settlement are proposed to determine the yield load of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks.
This study is about how to handle very soft grounds consisted of coal and household garbage(organic soil), clay, silt and so on, through examining Seoul-Busan High-Speed railway 6-2nd section. The soft soil might induce long term settlement and lead to structure's differential settlement eventually. So, we performed the boring test for characteristic of railway ground, laboratory test and field survey for mechanical property. And we also collected the engineering data of ground and the data for the establishment arrangement. These data were examined thoroughly considering residual settlement and strength by high-speed railway design standard. As a result of this study, we can say high-speed railway ground must have enough bearing capacity and be settled under allowable residual settlement(10cm). And also it needs to replace soft ground with high quality sand for the fundamental solution. With the application of replacement method on this study, we expect enough condition to construct stable high-speed railway.
If the railways consisting of soil subgrade is applied to repetitive loading, elastic deformation and plastic deformation will occur at the same time. So the repeat traffic loading condition should be considered to predict the long-term deformation on railway roadbed. In this study, laboratory data from the repeated load triaxial tests and cylinder model test were used to predict accumulated settlement on railway foundation and results were analyed based on the nonliear models and stress state considered. It has proposed predict model using power function model on plastic settlement of roadbed materials.
This study developed a settlement environment diagnostic indices (SEDI) of rural villages which can apply to analyze variable conditions of villages having development projects. The index consists of 5 diagnostic areas (first level) with 13 items (second level), including detail indices of 40 criteria (third level) defined by specialists' brainstorming process. In order to develop the index system, object-oriented approach was used to extract the 5 diagnostic areas (infra-basic settlement facility, life condition & environmental resources, industry & economic infrastructure, community, and residents) from rural villages. For the 40 criteria, it was introduced a quantification method that all villages have absolute values in national level, not relative value between villages within an unit area. The diagnostic diagram and table were developed to evaluate the villages compositively. The developed SEDI was applied to study areas, 56 villages in 2 subdivision areas of county, located on county of Keumsan. Applicability of the index system, database system should be developed with the surveying method of data in village level.

GS E&C was awarded the contract for the construction of Hanoi - Hai Phong Expressway Package EX-7 from Station Km 72+000 to Station Km 81+300 in December 2008. This project is the $7^{th}$ contract package of the 105.5 km long expressway near Hai Phong city, which includes a FCM-styled bridge along with high embankments over soft ground. For these high embankments, there is a need to treat the soft soil for improving the overall stability during construction and for reducing the post-construction settlement of the expressway. The Designer of this project had adopted four (4) different types of ground improvement techniques to treat the soft ground, including the prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), sand drains (SD), pack drains (PD, or sometimes called packed sand drains), and sand compaction piles (SCP). The main focus of soft soil treatment should be paid attention to the residual settlement after construction. In current design, however, it appeared that the secondary compression (or creep) of the improved soil layer and the consolidation settlement of the lower untreated compressible soil layer have been neglected in the estimation of the post-construction settlement. These uncalculated residual settlements may not only unsatisfy the design criteria but also raise serious problems during service period of this expressway. In this paper, the subsoil condition and current design were reviewed focusing on the employed soft soil treatment method and expected residual settlement.
Applicability of existing methods of predicting consolidation settlement was assessed by analyzing results of centrifuge tests modelling self-weight consolidation of soft marine clay. From extensive literature review about self-weight consolidation of soft marine clays located in southern coast in Korea, constitutive relationships of void ratio-effective stress-permeability and typical self-weight consolidation curves with time were obtained by centrifuge model experiments. For the condition of surcharge loading, exact solution of consolidation settlement curve was obtained by Terzaghi's consolidation theory and was compared with the results predicted by currently available methods such as Hyperbolic method, Asaoka's method, Hoshino's method and ${\sqrt{S}}$ method. All methods were found to have their own inherent error to predict final consolidation settlement. From results of analyzing the self-weight consolidation with time by using those methods, Asaoka's method predicted the best. Hyperbolic method predicted relatively well in error range of 2~24% for the case of showing the linearity in the relationship between T vs T/S in the stage of consolidation degree of 60~90 %. For the case of relation curve of T vs $T/S^2$ showing the lineality after the middle stage, error range from Hoshino method was close to those from Hyperbolic method. However, Hoshino method is not able to predict the final settlement in the case of relation curve of T vs $T/S^2$ being horizontal. For the given data about self-weight consolidation after the middle stage, relation curve of T vs T/S from ${\sqrt{S}}$ method shows the better linearity than that of T vs $T/{\sqrt{s}}$ from Hyperbolic method.
Recently, foundation designs based on piled raft concept have been increasing, where the piles are required not to ensure the overall stability of the foundation but to act as settlement reducer. When a concrete track is constructed on soft ground, excessive settlements may occur, while it rarely has bearing capacity problems. In this case, the settlement of the concrete track may be effectively reduced by arranging a small number of small-diameter piles beneath the track. This paper presents the effect of pile installation on the reduction of concrete track's settlement. A 3D finite difference method was employed to model the piled concrete tracks. A parametric study was carried out to assess the effect of varying soil condition and pile arrangements. From the analysis results, it is verified that the effect of the pile installation is significant to effectively reduce the settlement of concrete track. Optimal number of pile rows and pile spacings was proposed for the economical design of a piled concrete track. The bearing mechanism of piles was also investigated by analyzing load sharing characteristics of pile according to soil conditions and pile arrangements.

The constant rate of strain (CRS) consolidation test has been widely used to evaluate consolidation characteristics of soils instead of the standard Incremental Loading Test. In practical problems, after the ground improvement, the condition of the soil is over-consolidated. Therefore, it is important to determine the recompression indices and the coefficient of consolidation(or the coefficient of swelling) of unloading-reloading cycle to predict the settlement behavior. However, since standard testing procedures or studies related with strain rate are insufficient especially in unloading-reloading cycle, it is difficult to predict the settlement field behavior accurately from the CRS consolidation test results in spite of its lots of strengths. The several CRS consolidation tests were performed changing the unloading strain rate from 0.2%/hr to 20%/hr with vertical drainage condition using the reconstituted kaolinite sample. For the reconstituted kaolinite sample in CRS consolidation test, the recompression indices are insensitive to the strain rate. It is revealed that the coefficient of consolidation of reloading is affected by the developed pore pressure during unloading. Additionally, the test should be conducted in the positive pore pressure ratio range (3~15%) to obtain the reasonable coefficient of consolidation in the whole range(loading, unloading and reloading).

Recently, a 3,250 meter-long tunnel was constructed beneath the sea bed formed of composite sedimentary soils to transport reusable waste heat gas of industrial complex in the west coast of Korea. Some risks such as machine settlement always exist due to the uncertainties of geological and construction factors during the subsea shield TBM tunnelling. In this construction site, the deviation of tunnel alignment caused by shield TBM settlement was occurred during excavation. It was examined that the lack of bearing capacity of soft clay was a main cause. This paper evaluates the risk of shield TBM tunnelling considering the ground conditions. Correlation between machine settlement and its advance rate was evaluated through the analytical equation in which bearing capacity is considered and a 3-D numerical analysis which can simulate the TBM advance condition (in other words, the dynamic condition). It was found out that a shield TBM could settle due to the insufficient bearing capacity of soft clay layers. In order to prevent such the problem, the best advance rate proper to the ground characteristics is needed to be applied. In the ground conditions of the section of interest, it was turned out that if the shield TBM advance rate was maintained between 35 mm/min and 40 mm/min, the machine settlement could be avoided.

In this study, numerical analysis has been performed to compare the ground movements in a single ground layer and multiple ground layers due to nearby tunnel excavation. The numerical analysis has been conducted in the different ground layer conditions considering different construction conditions (volume loss at excavation face), and the results of the maximum surface settlement and horizontal displacement have been compared considering the ground layer and construction conditions. In addition, the maximum surface settlement from the numerical analysis has been compared with the maximum settlement at tunnel crown considering the ground layer and construction conditions, and the maximum surface settlement has been also compared with the maximum horizontal displacement with the ground layer conditions. Besides, the volume loss($V_L$) at tunnel excavation face has been compared with the total surface settlement volume($V_s$) with the variation of ground layer condition. The results from the numerical analysis have been compared with field measurements and by this comparison it is believed that the numerical results in this study can be utilized practically in analyzing the nearby ground behavior in different ground layer and construction conditions due to tunnel excavation.
