  • Seismic design provisions in Korea has developed based on seismic provisions in United States (e.g., ATC 3-06). Current seismic design provisions in U .S. is moving toward adopting enhanced concept for design. Federal Emergence Management Agency (FEMA) Provides the NEHRP recommended Provisions for the Development of Seismic Regulations for New Buildings which can be used as a source document for use by any interested members of the building community. Current seismic design provisions in U .S. generally use a uni-level force. These provisions can not be satisfied if the limit state design is concerned. Limit state can be defined as a state causing undesirable performance o( a structure (e .g., serviceability, ultimate, buckling, etc.). Even if there are provision for controlling drift by two levels, it is still difficult to satisfy limit states using uni-level force. Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ) uses a hi-level forces Int seismic loadings which can satisfy serviceability and ultimate limit state. However, the seismic parameters used in AIJ guideline are basically determined by subjective manner of code committee member and professions. These parameters need to be determined based on target quantities (target reliability, target energy dissipation, target displacement, target stress level, etc.). This study develops the method to determine the sesmic design parameters based on a certain taget level. Reliability is used as a target level and load factors in ANSI/ASCE 7-88 are selected as design parameters to be determined.

  • In this study, dynamic serviceability of PSC, PreStressed Concrete, simple railway bridge with 25m span was estimated. All of the high speed and general train loads were considered at estimation. Natural frequency is estimated about 8Hz and includes within optimum natural frequency extent of the railway bridge. Also, the bridge was detected that resonance occurrence possibility does not exist. When travel the Moogunghwa train, acceleration response was measured to 0.43g that exceed limitation value 0.35g. Also, rotation angle of girders end did not satisfy design standard of railway bridge for high speed train, but impact coefficient and deflection satisfied design standard. As a result, that railway bridge was detected that is securing dynamic safety and serviceability partially, but methods to decrease vibration acceleration response are required.

  • As the slenderness ratio of a high-rise building increases, the lateral load resisting system for the building is more often determined by serviceability design criteria. In serviceability design, the maximum drift and the level of vibration are controlled not to exceed the design criteria. Even though many drift method have been developed in various forms, no practical design method for wind induced vibration has been developed so far. Structural engineers rely upon heuristic or experience in designing wind induced vibration. Development of practical design method for wind induced vibration is required. Generally, wind induced acceleration responses are depending on several variables such as the weight density of a building, damping ratio, the natural period, and etc.. All parameters except the natural period or frequency are usually out of reach for structural engineers, then the wind acceleration response may be proportioned to the natural period. Therefore, in this paper, a wind induced vibration design method based on frequency control technique for high-rise is proposed. The method is applied to vibration design of a 25-story office building for performance evaluation.

  • Performance-based seismic design (PBSD) is currently used for retrofitting of older buildings and the design of new buildings. Whereas, application of performance-based design for wind load is still under development. The tendency has been in the codes to increase wind hazard based on recent recorded events. Since tall buildings are highly susceptible to wind load, necessity for developing a framework for performance-based wind design (PBWD) has intensified. Only a few guidelines such as ASCE (2019) provide information on using PBWD as an alternative for code prescriptive wind design. Though wind hazards, performance objectives, analysis techniques, and acceptance criteria are explained, no recommendations are provided for several aspects like how to select a proper level of wind hazard for each target performance criterion. This paper is an attempt to explain current design philosophy for wind and seismic loads and inherent connection between the components of PBSD for development of a framework for PBWD of tall buildings. Recognizing this connection, a framework for PBWD based on limits set for serviceability and strength is also proposed. Also, the potential for carrying out PBWD in line with ASCE 7-16 is investigated and proposed in this paper.

  • Present paper deals with the cost effective design of reinforced concrete building frame employing unified particle swarm optimization (UPSO). A building frame with G+8 stories have been adopted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present algorithm. Effect of seismic loads and wind load have been considered as per Indian Standard (IS) 1893 (Part-I) and IS 875 (Part-III) respectively. Analysis of the frame has been carried out in STAAD Pro software. The design loads for all the beams and columns obtained from STAAD Pro have been given as input of the optimization algorithm. Next, cost optimization of all beams and columns have been carried out in MATLAB environment using UPSO, considering the safety and serviceability criteria mentioned in IS 456. Cost of formwork, concrete and reinforcement have been considered to calculate the total cost. Reinforcement of beams and columns has been calculated with consideration for curtailment and feasibility of laying the reinforcement bars during actual construction. The numerical analysis ensures the accuracy of the developed algorithm in providing the cost optimized design of RC building frame considering safety, serviceability and constructional feasibilities. Further, Monte Carlo simulations performed on the numerical results, proved the consistency and robustness of the developed algorithm. Thus, the present algorithm is capable of giving a cost effective design of RC building frame, which can be adopted directly in construction site without making any changes.

  • This paper evaluated the safety and serviceability of a building structure considering the multi-hazard and proposed TMD-based adaptive smart control system to improve the structural performance. To make multi-hazard loads, an artificial earthquake and artificial wind loads were generated based on representative regions of strong seismicity and strong wind in U.S.A. The safety and serviceability of a 20-story example building structure were investigated using the generated artificial loads. A smart TMD was employed to improve the safety and serviceability of the example structure and its capacity of structural performance improvement was evaluated. The smart TMD was comprised of a MR (magnetorheological) damper. Numerical analysis showed that the example building structure could not satisfy the design limit of safety and serviceability with respect to multi-hazard. The smart TMD effectively reduced the seismic responses associated with the safety and wind-induce responses associated with serviceability.

  • Recently, in field of bridge construction, modular technology has been studied to reduce construction period, traffic impact and environmental impact. This study is a part of research related to the modular bridges. The aim of the study is to analyze the structural behavior and evaluate a serviceability for transverse connection of modular slab bridge. A total of four specimens were fabricated. including a control beam for finding the maximum load by static test. And one control beam and two segmental beams were fabricated for cyclic loading test. As the test result, the beams that were introduced 100% of the design prestressing force showed a smaller maximum deflection, residual deflection and crack width than the control beam. The beam for serviceability evaluation was satisfied with structural serviceability limits of the deflection and crack.

  • Pipelines are one of the most important structures in subsea equipment. It is the main equipment for transportation of crude oil and natural gas to the downstream facilities. Crude oil and natural gas leak will be carry out not only political and financial issues but also pollution to the environment. Inaccurate predictions of corrosion behavior will make hazardous consequences. The serviceability assessment of corroded structures is essential especially for subsea pipelines. As corrosion is concerned, the effects of failure due to significant reduction will make it hard to the pipeline operator to maintain the serviceability of pipelines. In this paper, the serviceability assessment of corroded crude oil pipeline is performed using the industry design code (Shell92, DNV RP F101, ASME B31G, BS 7910, PCORRC) and FEA depending on corrosion area. In last step, the future integrity of the subsea crude oil pipeline is assessed to predict the remaining year in service of crude oil pipelines.

  • Most of the existing evaluation criteria of vibration serviceability rely on the peak acceleration of the structure rather than that of the people keeping their own body unmoved on the structure who is the real receiver of structural vibrations. In order to accurately assess the vibration serviceability, therefore, a full path assessment approach of vibration serviceability based on vibration source, path and receiver is not only tentatively proposed in this paper, taking the peak acceleration of receiver into account, but also introduce a probability procedure to provide more instructive information instead of a single value. In fact, semi-rigid supported on both sides of the structure is more consistent with the actual situation than simply supported or clamped due to the application of the prefabricated footbridge structures. So, the footbridge is regarded as a beam with semi-rigid supported on both sides in this paper. The differential quadrature-integral quadrature coupled method is not only to handle different type of boundary conditions, but also after being further modified via the introduction of an approximation procedure in this work, the time-varying system problem caused by human-structure interaction can be solved well. The analytical results of numerical simulations demonstrate that the modified differential quadrature-integral quadrature coupled method has higher reliability and accuracy compared with the mode superposition method. What's more, both of the two different passive control measures, the tuned mass damper and semi-rigid supported, have good performance for reducing vibrations. Most importantly, semi-rigid supported is easier to achieve the objective of reducing vibration compared with tuned mass damper in design stage of structure.

  • In order to get dynamic serviceability of a train travelling on a railway bridge, comfort limits with the deflection of bridge and vertical acceleration on car body are proposed in Eurocode, Shinkansen design criteria, The design guideline of the Honam High-speed railway. The design guideline of the Honam High-speed railway has quoted Eurocode. Therefore it is expected that supplementation of comfort limit of railway bridge according to expansion of span length and the improvement traveling speed of trains in the future would relatively fall behind developed countries in railway. Therefore, in order to secure technological competitiveness in world market, the study was conducted to propose the deflection limit based on vibration serviceability of railway bridges that can consider bridge-train interaction and travelling speed increase. The parameter study and bridge-train dynamic interaction analysis was conducted to figure out the correlation of vertical acceleration on car body and bridge displacement according to the increase in travelling speed. Also, the trend of increasing vertical acceleration on car body according to the increase in travelling speed was confirmed, and the amplification coefficient of vertical acceleration on car body was suggested. And the deflection form and vibration of the bridge were assumed to be in harmonic motion, and transfer function and the amplification coefficient were used to develop the dynamic serviceability deflection limit of the high-speed railway bridge as a formula.
