  • rate of growth of "protective" films of oxides and compounds derived from the lubricant. The protection afforded by the films is strongly dependent on lubricant and steel composition, initial composite surface roughness and the load/speed sequence or history in the early stages of sliding. The protective films, formed by chemical and mechanical action between lubricant and mating surfaces, delayed the surface roughening and offered higher load capacity. Given the great number of variables involved it is not possible to follow more than a few of the chemical changes on surfaces at the end of experiments. Ellipsometry was therefore used to monitor the formation and loss of dual protective films in real time, and also to find the effect of protective films on scuffing and break-in depending on lubricant conditions.

  • The power loss of large-capacity systems using single-phase inverters has attracted considerable attention. In this study, optimal switching sequence model prediction control at a low switching frequency is proposed to reduce the power loss in a high-power inverter system, and a compensation method that can be utilized for model prediction control is developed to reduce errors in accordance with sampling values. When a three-level, single-phase inverter using a switching frequency of 600 Hz and a sampling frequency of 12 kHz is adopted, the power factor is improved from 0.95 to 0.99 through 3 kW active power control. The performance of the controller is also verified.

  • This paper proposes a system which extracts necessary information from call-for-paper (CFP) documents using a hidden Markov model (HMM). Even though a CFP does not follow a strict form, there is, in general, a relatively-fixed sequence of information within most CFPs. Therefore, a hiden Markov model is adopted to analyze CFPs which has an advantage of processing consecutive data. However, when CFPs are intuitively modeled with a hidden Markov model, a problem arises that the boundaries of the information are not recognized accurately. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a two-phrase hidden Markov model. In the first step, the P-HMM (Phrase hidden Markov model) which models a document with phrases recognizes CFP documents locally. Then, the D-HMM (Document hidden Markov model) grasps the overall structure and information flow of the document. The experiments over 400 CFP documents grathered on Web result in 0.49 of F-score. This performance implies 0.15 of F-measure improvement over the HMM which is intuitively modeled.

  • In this paper, we propose an Internal/External Knowledge Distillation (IEKD), which utilizes both external correlations between feature maps of heterogeneous models and internal correlations between feature maps of the same model for transferring knowledge from a teacher model to a student model. To achieve this, we transform feature maps into a sequence format and extract new feature maps suitable for knowledge distillation by considering internal and external correlations through a transformer. We can learn both internal and external correlations by distilling the extracted feature maps and improve the accuracy of the student model by utilizing the extracted feature maps with feature matching. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed knowledge distillation method, we achieved 76.23% Top-1 image classification accuracy on the CIFAR-100 dataset with the "ResNet-32×4/VGG-8" teacher and student combination and outperformed the state-of-the-art KD methods.

  • Cross docking is a material handling and distribution concept in which products move directly from receiving dock to shipping dock, without being stored in a warehouse or distribution center. Depending on the facility and operating conditions or strategies employed, it is possible to generate various cross docking scenarios or models. The cross docking model, which is studied in this research, assumes there are a separate receiving dock and a separate shipping dock. It is also assumed that the products contained in a receiving truck and the products needed for a shipping truck are known in advance. Furthermore, the study is restricted to scenarios where there is only one receiving dock and only one shipping dock at the warehouse. The research objective is to find the best truck spotting sequence for both receiving and shipping trucks to minimize total operation time (i.e., the makespan) of the cross docking system.

  • The objective of this paper is to study how to apply the functional models in the design reviews and the validation of the subsequent design specifications and standards in the urban rail transit standardization program. The functional models can be obtained based on the requirements. Specifically, the requirements are first represented by the use case and sequence diagrams and then the results are transformed into the functional models using the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) diagrams and the FFBD (Functional Flow Block Diagram) and others. Based on the results of the study, it can be checked whether the original requirements have been reflected properly in the designs. Also, it can be seen that how the possible changes in the requirements affect the functions and thus how the designs should be changed accordingly.

  • This study developed an integrated management framework for KM, consisting of four major management objects and organizational initiatives: managerial and technical initiatives. Based on the developed framework, it proposes a stage model of organizational KM from Initiation, Propagation, Integration to Networking stage with detail explanations focusing on management goals and activities. To validate the proposed stage model, this study conducted a preliminary study with a latent content analysis of 15 KM cases. Form the results, though is could not validate the time sequence of each stage because of the limited information of cases, it shows meaningful findings in that there are a kind of relationship among management goals, activities and characteristics of management object of cases.

  • On-machine automatic measuring software from 3-D solid modeler is generally applied to assess the functional performance of a final produce for computer numerical control (CNC) machine. Automatic measuring software may also be performed on individual components of CNC machine in which some functional aspect of the component must be examined and cannot be implicity determined by means of a mechanical inspection. The manufacturing specialist, combined with the appropriate software simulation, can not only create the commands to drive the virtual measuring but also can check for mistakes by viewing the computer graphics simulation of the tool cutting sequence.

  • This paper describes modeling & simulation(M&S) model for dynamic analysis of helicopter rotor blades. Simulation model is developed using Dymola tool which implements the open source language - Modelica. Modelica is appropriate for developing multibody dynamic analysis model. To develop an M&S model efficiently, model based systems engineering(MBSE) is applied. Some diagrams such as requirement diagram, block definition diagram and sequence diagram etc. are drawn to capture the concept of M&S model. This activity is done utilizing the open source tool - Papyrus.

  • In this paper, a failure model for co-cured steel-composite tubular single lap joints has been proposed incorporating the nonlinear mechanical behavior of steel adherends and different failure mode s such as steel adherend failure and composite adherend failure. The characteristics of the co-cured steel-composite tubular single lap joint were investigated with respect to the test temperature, the stacking sequence of composite adherend, the thickness ratio of steel adherend to composite adherend, and the scarf ratio of steel adherend. Thus, the optimum design method for the co-cured steel-composite tubular single lap joint was suggested.
