  • This paper shows that the Kronecker sequence, the rapid acquisition spreading code, can be used in packet wireless data communication systems. The general properties of the Kronecker sequence such as construction and correlation characteristics are described, and it is shown that the Kronecker sequence can use a partial-period correlation for a faster acquisition. Based on above Properties, it can be expected that the Kronecker sequence can be used in packet communication systems because the probability of false alarm for the Kronecker sequence is lower and flatter(that is, less sensitive to Ec/No variations) than that for the PN sequence under the assumption that both sequences have the same acquisition time.

  • The original DANTE sequence and its variations have limitation in excitation profile (a sinc function-like excitation) due to the finite duration of the DANTE pulsetrain. This sinc function-like selection profile excites only a small fraction of the spins in the pixel thereby results in poor signal to noise ratio (only about ${\sim}1%$ of normal MR imaging sequence). Therefore, this poor signal to noise ratio (SNR) has been the main drawback of the original DANTE sequence. To improve the signal to noise ratio, phases of individual RF pulses in the DANTE pulse train were modulated so that more spins in the object were excited ($1{\sim}3$). We have introduced a new FM (Frequency Modulation) DANTE sequence and analyzed the signal intensity and excitation profiles.

  • The PCR was employed to detect and characterize the bovine immunodeficiency-like virus (BIV), which is a newly recognized member of the I entivirinae of the retroviruses. Degenerate primers representing the conserved regions in the pol genes of the Lentivirinae, were used to detect proviral DNA obtained from the bovine embryonic spleen cell cultures infected with BIV. The PCR amplified DNA fragment was molecularly cloned and sequenced. The BIV DNA fragment contained a sequence identical to that reported by Garvey et al. (Garvey et al., 1990. Virology, 175, 391-409). With the degenerate primers, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of sick cattle and cells cultured with BIV were tested to determine genetic variation of BIV pol conserved sequence. We found the sequence heterogeneity within cultures and most variations occurred at the third base of codons that would not lead to amino acid substitutions. Another change was GAG (Glu) to AAG (Lys) within the BIV isolates. Interestingly, the altered sequence is also found in other lentiviruses such as HIV-2, SIV mac, CAEV and EIAV.

  • Five edible mountain vegetables(Saussurea sp. Aster tataricus, A. scaber. Synurus deltoides, Ligularia fischeri) were investigated on the basis of amplified DNA polymorphisms resulted from PCR (polymerase chain reaction) analysis. The sampled plants consisted of 38 individuals in 5 taxa. Only 10 primers out of 62 primers (60 random [10-mer] primers, two 15-mer [M13 core sequence, and (GGAT) sequence]) tested gave rise to polymorphisms in all of the tested plants, producing 176 DAN fragments amplified. Intraspecific polymorphisms found in each taxa showed intraspecies constancy (31.1-61.1%) in the banding patterns of individual plants: Saussurea sp. 31.1%, 15 bands, Aster tataricus, 40.9%, 18 bands, A. scaber. 38.5%, 15 bands. Synurus deltoides, 34.7%, 17 bands, and Ligularia fischeri, 61.1%, 22 brands, respectively. All five species were well classified from each other at the 0.93 level of similarity index value. Intraspecific and interspecific variations were appeared at the levels ranging from 0.62 to 0.99. Based on these results, our PCR analyses support the previous data derived from external morphology of the 5 edible mountain vegetables, but very low levels o intraspecific variations were detected in all of these taxa.

  • A compensation method of the motor parameters using zero sequence third harmonic voltage is presented for the speed sensorless vector control of the induction motor considering saturation of the flux. Generally, the air-gap flux of the saturated induction motor contains the space harmonic components rotating with the synchronous frequency of the motor. Because the EMF of the saturated induction motor contains the zero sequence harmonic voltages at the neutral point of the motor, those harmonic voltages can be used as a saturation index. In this work, the rotor flux observer is firstly designed for the speed sensorless vector control of induction motor. And a novel measurement method of the space harmonic voltage and a compensation method of th LPF(Low Pass Filter) are proposed. For compensating the non-linear variations of the magnetizing inductance depending on the saturation level of the motor, the dominant third harmonic voltage of the motor is used as a saturation function of the air-gap flux. And the variation of the stator resistance owing to the motor temperature can also be measured with the phase angle between the impressed voltage vector and the zero sequence voltage. The validity of the proposed parameter compensation scheme in the speed sensorless vector control using rotor flux observer is verified by the result of the simulations and the experiments.

  • Crease of Streptococcus salivarius is believed to play a critical role in bacterial ecology and pH homeostasis in the mouth, and consequently affect the pathogenesis of dental caries and periodontal diseases. Expression of the urease gene is greatly enhanced by low p. f. excess of Carbohydrate, and faster growth. It was observed that urease activity of the strains of S. salivarius that exhibited no of low urease activity was not increased even in low pH condition. In this study, it was hypothesized that the urease gene of the strains is absent, defected, or greatly changed by genetic combination. In order to prove this hypothesis, chromosomes were obtained from 28 S. salivarius strains which had been isolated from normal teeth and carious lesions, subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers encoding highly conserved sequence from ureC, and then the obtained PCR products were compared. The results were as follows: 1. After PCR the strains generated either one of 0.54- and 1.3-kbp PCR products, or none. 2. All 16 strains having a higher urease activity(<50${\mu}mol/min/mg$) produced 0.54-kbp PCR products. 3. Twelve strains without urease activity and with a lower urease activity(<50${\mu}mol/min/mg$) yield either one of 0.54 and 1.3-kbp PCR products, or none. 4. The DNA sequence of the 0.54-kbp PCR product (pCAP-0.54) exhibited 95% identity to the ureC of S. salivarus 57.I; 30bp were found to be different, which led to difference of only 2 amino acids in the sequence. 5. The DNA sequence of the 1.3-kbp PCR product(pCAP-1.3) was found to be highly homologous to the aminopeptidase C gene of Streptococcus thermophilus. Overall results indicate that there are considerable variations of the urease genes from S. salivarus strains and the variations may affect the uncolytic activity of the bacteria directly of indirectly.

  • Tire manufactures have dealt with noise problem by varying the pitch of the tread. The various formulas for the variations are generally determined differently, however. Often these variations are based on a combination of trial and error, intuition, and economics. Some manufactures have models and analogs to test tread patterns and their variations. These efforts, however practical, do not determine the best variation beforehand or guarantee the best results. For this reason it was felt that a general mathematical approach fur determining the best variation was needed. Moreover, the method should be completely general, easy to use, and sufficiently accurate. This paper discusses a mathematical method called Mechanical Frequency Modulation(MFM) which meets the above requirements. Thus, MFM pertains to computing an irregular time sequence of events so that the resulting excitation spectrum is shaped to a preferred form. The first part of this paper treats the theoretical basis for computing an optimum variation ; the second part discusses experimental results and simulation program which corroborate the theory.

  • To detect the genetic variations among infectious bursal disease (IBD) vaccine strains, the hypervariable region of VP2 gene of seven IBDV vaccine strains were amplified using reverse transcriptase/polymerase chain reation(RT/PCR). Ampllified PCR products of IBDV were cloned, sequenced, and compared with published sequences for IBDV. Vaccine strains (JOONG, HAN, B7, IB, BU2, G2, CIL) used in Korea and Korean field isolates (SH/92, K1, 310) had 81%(310 and HAN) ~ 98%(SH/92 and CIL) amino acid sequence similarity. Vaccine strains had 80%(HAN and IB) ~ 99%(JOONG and BU2) amino acid sequence similartiy. Intermediate plus vaccine strain, CIL was not substituted at positions 279(D $\rightarrow$ N) and 284(A $\rightarrow$ T), and conserved in serine-rich heptapeptide. At the two hydrophilic region, JOONG, IB and Bu2 strains had identical amino acid sequence comparing with STC strain. By phylogenetic analysis, JOONG and DAE strains were categorized in same group with BU2. The CIL and STC strains closely related but seperated from G2, HAN, B7 and IB strains.
