Ghrelin is a novel growth-hormone-releasing acylated peptide, which has been purified and identified in rat stomach. In the present study, the full-length sequence of bovine ghrelin cDNA was cloned by RT-PCR. The bovine ghrelin cDNA sequence derived in the present study included a 348 bp open reading frame and a 137 bp 3'UTR. The putative amino acid sequence of bovine prepro-ghrelin consisted of 116 amino acids, which contained the 27-amino acid ghrelin. The sequence analysis of the bovine ghrelin gene revealed that an intron existed between Gln$^{13}$ and Arg$^{14}$ of ghrelin. This exon-intron boundary matched the GT-AG rule of the splicing mechanism. Compared with rats, which have two tandem CAG sequences in the 3'end of intron, bovine ghrelin genome has only one CAG sequence. Therefore, although rats can produce 28 amino acid-ghrelin and 27 amino acid-des-Gln$^{14}$-ghrelin by alternative splicing, ruminant species, including bovines, might be able to produce only one type of ghrelin peptide, des-Gln$^{14}$-ghrelin. The influence of aging on plasma ghrelin concentration was also examined. Plasma ghrelin concentration increased after birth to approximately 600 days of age, and then remained constant.
Toxoplasma gondii is an opportunistic protozoan parasite that can infect almost all warm-blooded animals including humans with a worldwide distribution. Micronemes play an important role in invasion process of T. gondii, associated with the attachment, motility, and host cell recognition. In this research, sequence diversity in microneme protein 6 (MIC6) gene among 16 T. gondii isolates from different hosts and geographical regions and 1 reference strain was examined. The results showed that the sequence of all the examined T. gondii strains was 1,050 bp in length, and their A + T content was between 45.7% and 46.1%. Sequence analysis presented 33 nucleotide mutation positions (0-1.1%), resulting in 23 amino acid substitutions (0-2.3%) aligned with T. gondii RH strain. Moreover, T. gondii strains representing the 3 classical genotypes (Type I, II, and III) were separated into different clusters based on the locus of MIC6 using phylogenetic analyses by Bayesian inference (BI), maximum parsimony (MP), and maximum likelihood (ML), but T. gondii strains belonging to ToxoDB #9 were separated into different clusters. Our results suggested that MIC6 gene is not a suitable marker for T. gondii population genetic studies.

We have determined the complete mitochondrial genome of the yellow-spotted long horned beetle, Psacothea hilaris (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), an endangered insect species in Korea. The 15,856-bp long P. hilaris mitogenome harbors gene content typical of the animal mitogenome and a gene arrangement identical to the most common type found in insect mitogenomes. As with all other sequenced coleopteran species, the 5-bp long TAGTA motif was also detected in the intergenic space sequence located between $tRNA^{Ser}$(UCN) and ND1 of P. hilaris. The 1,190-bp long non-coding A+T-rich region harbors an unusual series of seven identical repeat sequences of 57-bp in length and several stretches of sequences with the potential to form stem-and-loop structures. Furthermore, it contains one $tRNA^{Arg}$-like sequence and one $tRNA^{Lys}$-like sequence. Phylogenetic analysis among available coleopteran mitogenomes using the concatenated amino acid sequences of PCGs appear to support the sister group relationship of the suborder Polyphaga to all remaining suborders, including Adephaga, Myxophaga, and Archostemata. Among the two available infraorders in Polyphaga, a monophyletic Cucujiformia was confirmed, with the placement of Cleroidea as the basal lineage for Cucujiformia. On the other hand, the infraorder Elateriformia was not identified as monophyletic, thereby indicating that Scirtoidea and Buprestoidea are the basal lineages for Cucujiformia and the remaining Elateriformia.
Arabidopsis is well-known to the world's plant research community as a model plant. Many significant resources and innovative research tools, as well as large bodies of genomic information, have been created and shared by the research community, partly explaining why so many researchers use this small plant for their research. The genome sequence of Arabidopsis was fully characterized by the end of the $20^{th}$ century. Soon afterwards, the Arabidopsis research community began a 10-year international project on the functional genomics of the species. In 2001, at the beginning of the project, the RIKEN BioResource Center (BRC) started its Arabidopsis resource project. The following year, the National BioResource Project was launched, funded by the Japanese government, and the RIKEN BRC was chosen as a core facility for Arabidopsis resource. Seeds of RIKEN Arabidopsis transposon-tagged mutant lines, activation-tagged lines, full-length cDNA over-expresser lines, and natural accessions, as well as RIKEN Arabidopsis full-length cDNA clones and T87 cells, are preserved at RIKEN BRC and distributed around the world. The major resources provided to the research community have been full-length cDNA clones and insertion mutants that are suitable for use in reverse-genetics studies. This paper provides an overview of the Arabidopsis resources made available by RIKEN BRC and examples of research that has been done by users and developers of these resources.
This paper aims to study the large deflections of variable-arc-length elastica subjected to the terminal forces (e.g., axial force and torque). Based on Kirchhoff's rod theory and with help of Euler parameters, the set of nonlinear governing differential equations which free from the effect of singularity are established together with boundary conditions. The system of nonlinear differential equations is solved by using the shooting method with high accuracy integrator, seventh-eighth order Runge-Kutta with adaptive step-size scheme. The error norm of end conditions is minimized within the prescribed tolerance ($10^{-5}$). The behavior of VAL elastica is studied by two processes. One is obtained by applying slackening first. After that keeping the slackening as a constant and then the twist angle is varied in subsequent order. The other process is performed by reversing the sequence of loading in the first process. The results are interpreted by observing the load-deflection diagram and the stability properties are predicted via fold rule. From the results, there are many interesting aspects such as snap-through phenomenon, secondary bifurcation point, loop formation, equilibrium configurations and effect of variable-arc-length to behavior of elastica.

Based on the simple sequence repeat (SSR) marker, a Korean wheat core collection were established with 616 wheat accessions. Among them, the SNP genotyping for the entire genome was performed using DNA chip array to clarify the whole genome SNP profiles. Consequently, a total of 35,143 SNPs were found and we re-established a mini-core collection with 247 accessions. Population diversity and phylogenetic analysis revealed genetic diversity and relationships from the mini core set. In addition, genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed on 19 phenotypic traits; ear type, awn length, culm length, ear length, awn color, seed coat color, culm color, ear color, loading, leaf length, leaf width, seeding stand, cold damage, weight, auricle, plant type, heading stage, maturation period, upright habit, and degree of flag leaf. The GWAS was performed using the fixed and random model circulating probability unification (FarmCPU), which identified 14 to 258 SNP loci related to 19 phenotypic traits. Our study indicates that this Korean wheat mini-core collection is a set of germplasm useful for basic and applied research with the aim of understanding and exploiting the genetic diversity of Korean wheat varieties.
The optimal joint maximum-likelihood sequence estima-for using an array of antennas is derived for synchronous direct sequence-code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system. Each user employs a rate 1/n convolutional code for channel coding for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. The array re-ceiver structure is composed of beamformers in the users' direc-tions followed by a bank of matched filters. The decoder is imple-mented using a Viterbi algorithm whose states depend on the num-ber of users and the constraint length of the convolutional code. The asymptotic array multiuser coding gain(AAMCG)is defined to encompass the asymptotic multiuser coding gain and the spatial information on users' locations in the system. We derive the upper and lower bounds of the AAMCG. As an example, the upper and lower bounds of AAMCG are obtained for the two user case where each user employes the maximum free distance convolutional code with rate 1/2. The enar-far resistance property is also investigated considering the number of antenna elements and user separations in the space.

In this paper, we propose a new efficient motion vector coding algorithm for the video sequence with slow motion. In the proposed algorithm, the amount of motion for a given video sequence is determined by a Skip_rate parameter. The motion difference for slow motion is encoded with a combined codeword which is generated from the conventional codewords. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves approximately $15\%$ bits gain compared to the conventional methods. Moreover, additional memory and calculations for statistical observation are not required in the proposed algorithm.
Chemical structure of poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-1, 4-cyclohexylene dimethylene terephthalate), P(ET-CT) copolyesters was investigated by High Resolution NMR analysis. The copolymer composition and isomeric ratio were determined by methylene resonance peaks which were separated into three peaks corresponding to ET, trans CT and cis CT units, respectively. The copolymer sequence distribution was evaluated from the carbon resonance peaks connected to carbonyl groups in benzene, indicating died distribution. According to statistics model, these copolyesters are almost random copolymers. The copolymer sequence distribution could be simulated and its averaged length was calculated by random copolymer statistics.

An autonomously replicating sequence (Kf-ARS1) of Kluyveromyces fragilis was cloned from the genomic library which was constructed using pHN134 as a cloning vector to make a new host-vector system for the production of heterologous protein from K. fragilis as a host. The cloning vector pHN134 was composed of $Km^r, Ap^r$ and multiple cloning site in LacZ . A clone carrying Kf-ARS1 was isolated and the recombinant plasmid was designated as pIKD102. The cloned fragment was 2.3 kb (EcoRI/EcoRI) in length. Subcloning experiment showed that the region for ARS activity was 1.5 kb (SalI/EcoRI) fragment. It was shown that the Kf-ARS1 was active in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Kluyveromyces fragilis.
