The demand for rare-earth elements (REEs) is increasing owing to their significance as prominent materials in electronics, high-tech industries, geological research, nuclear forensics, and environmental monitoring. In general, the utilization of REEs in various applications requires the use of chromatographic techniques to separate individual elements. However, REEs have similar physicochemical properties, which makes them difficult to separate. Recently, several studies have examined the separation of REEs using LN resin as the stationary phase and aqueous nitric acid and hydrochloric acid solutions as eluents. Using this method, light REEs have been separated using dilute acid solutions as the eluent, whereas heavy REEs are separated using solutions with high acid concentrations. To increase the separation resolution between different REEs, either the column length or resin size is changed. In addition, the suggested methods are implemented to decrease the analysis time. This review presents technical information on the chromatographic separation of REEs using the LN resin and discusses the optimal experimental conditions.
It is said that polymer modified asphalt using polyethylene as modifier would show phase separation due to density difference and incompatibility between asphalt and polyethylene. In this study, to prevent coalescence of polyethylene in asphalt, we employed peroxides as phase separation inhibitor. On microscope, peroxides (dicumyl peroxide, lauroyl peroxide) with waste vinyl (comprising low density polyethylene) did not show phase separation, however, rheometer test showed phase separation at molecular level, i.e., polyethylene and asphalt are immiscible ultimately. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, Marshall stability, dynamic stability) showed waste vinyl-modified asphalts are highly resistant to plastic deformation and these properties are even better than those of Superphalt.

The purpose of this study is to provide the basic data on the optimum method for interfacial separation for an effective recycle of concrete waste by using the thermal properties of concrete. Therefore, this study is proceeded by dividing the interface of concrete into cement paste and fine aggregates or mortar and coarse aggregate, considering the aspect of recycled cement and aggregate as the recycling use of concrete waste. As results of the experiment, in case of recycle cement, the interfacial separation is easily appeared, but it is shown that the mixed amount of powder included in fine aggregate doesn't greatly decrease. But, in case of recycle coarse aggregate, the effect of interfacial separation by preliminary heating is predominant. Especially, the bonding rate of mortar is the lowest when it is heated 5 times for 120 minutes at $300^{\circ}C$. Hence, it is considered that it will be an excellent effect of quality control when the results of this study is applied to a manufacturing system of recycle coarse aggregate which is about to put into practical use.

Most of synthetic polymeric membranes used in ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis and microfiltration processes are prepared by phase inversion(or phase separation) technique. In this technique, a homogeneous polymer solution is cast into thin film or hollow fiber shape and then immersed into a nonsolvent coagulant bath. The exchange of solvent and nonsolvent across the interface between casting solution and coagu!ant can make the casting solution phase-separate and form a membrane with a symmetric or asymmetric structure. Because of importance of this technique in membrane field, many investigations have been dedicated to elucidate the mechanism of membrane formation by phase inversion technique.[1-10] These investigation have suggested that the structure formation and permeation properties of phase inversion membrane depend on the variables such as the nature and content of casting solution and coagulant, temperature of casting solution and coagulant, and the diffusional exchange rate of solvent and nonsolvent etc. which can be related to the thermodynamic and kinetic properties of the casting system. The variables such as the nature and content of casting solution can also be the important factor affecting the structure formation and permeation property of the phase inversion membrane.

(S)-Alanine Racemase Chiral Analogue ((S)-ARCA) was used as an efficient adsorbent for the selective separation of D-amino acids (D-AAs), which are industrially important as chiral building blocks for the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates. The organic phase, containing (S)-ARCA adsorbent and phase transfer reagents, such as ionic liquid type molecules (Tetraphenylphosphonium chloride (TPPC), Octyltriphenylphosponium bromide (OTPPBr)), were coated on the surfaces of mesoporous carbon supports. For the immobilization of chiral adsorbents, meso/macroporous monolithic carbon (MMC), having bimodal pore structures with high surface areas and pore volumes, were fabricated. The separation of chiral AAs by adsorption onto the heterogeneous (S)-ARCA was performed using a continuous flow type packed bed reactor system. The effects of loading amount of ARCA on the support, the molar ratio of AA to ARCA, flow rates, and the type of phase transfer reagent (PTR) on the isolation yields and the optical purity of product D-AAs were investigated. D-AAs were selectively combined to (S)-ARCA through imine formation reaction in an aqueous basic solution of racemic D/L-AA. The (S)-ARCA coated MMC support showed a high selectivity, up to 95 ee%, for the separation of D-type phenylalanine, serine and tryptophan from racemic mixtures. The ionic liquids TPPC and OTPPBr exhibited superior properties to those of the ionic surfactant Cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), as a PTR, showing constant optical purities of 95 ee%, with high isolation yields for five repeated reuses. The unique separation properties in this heterogeneous adsorption system should provide for an expansion of the applications of porous materials for commercial processes.

We demonstrated that self-separation FS-GaN (freestanding-GaN) was grown on MELO (maskless epitaxially lateral overgrowth) GaN template by horizontal HVPE (hydride vapor phase epitaxy). Before thick GaN grwoth, MELO GaN template was grown on patterned GaN template by MOCVD (metal organic chemical vapor deposition). The laterally overgrown GaN would consist of a continuous well coalesced layer. The mixed TDD (threading dislocation density) of seed and wing region were $8{\times}10^8cm^{-2}$ and $7{\times}10^7cm^{-2}$, respectively. After thick GaN grown by HVPE, the self-separation between thick GaN and sapphire substrate was generated at seed region. The regions of self-separation for FS-GaN and sapphire were observed by FE-SEM. Moreover, Raman results indicated that the compressive strain of seed and wing regions at FS-GaN substrate were slightly released compared to that of thick GaN grown on conventional GaN template. The optical properties of the FS-GaN substrate were examined by using PL (photoluminescence). The PL exhibited that donor bound exciton and donor acceptor pair were observed at low temperature. The effects on optical and structural properties of FS-GaN substrate have been discussed in detail.
Polymeric gas separation membrane is the fastest growing field in membrane separation process. Polymeric gas separation membrane process is competitive compare to cryogenic process and pressure swing adsorption process. Aromatic polymer materials such as polysulfones, polypheneylene oxides, polycarbonates and polyimides have been used for gas separation. Recently, glassy polymer likes polyimide in aromatic polymers has been developed for achievement of high selectivity and permeability coefficients. The accurate understanding on a type and structure of polymer material is very important, because the factor that polymer material affect gas separation property. In the study, trend and the development direction on synthesis and permeation properties of polyimide is confirmed.

$^{89}Zr$ with the favorable nuclear decay kinetics and chemical properties is an appealing radiometal for its application in immuno-PET using radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies. Rising demand of ultrahigh purity and high-specific activity $^{89}Zr$ has propelled the radiochemist worldwide to develop an overall efficacious method for its promising separation from the target matrix $^{89}Y$. The requirement of elevated radiochemical purity (${\geq}$ 99.99%) has accelerated the efforts since last two decades to achieve higher decontamination and separation factors of carrier free $^{89}Zr$ over $^{89}Y$ using several suitable separation techniques. However, each of the technique has its own pros and cons which prior to its actual medical application needs to be optimized and thoroughly scrutinized to avoid further complications during radiolabelling of the pharmaceuticals. In this short review article we will specifically consider as well focus on the historical development and the recent advances on the radiochemical separation of $^{89}Zr$ from $^{89}Y$ which will be helpful for the separation scientist involved in this area to understand the existing available means and plan the strategy to investigate and develop the novel techniques to overcome the problems involved in the present methods.

The properties of FRP(fiber-reinforced plastics) depend not only on the characteristics of the matrix but also on the structure of fiber mat and the fiber type of reinforcement. Therefore it is very important to study the characteristics of reinforcement and matrix. In this paper, a method is proposed which can be used to measure the mean coeffcient of separation for the press molding of FRP, and the mean equivalent coefficient of separation is obtained from the separation coefficient. And the relationship between the mean equivalent coefficient of separation and the structure of fiber mat is discussed. The effects of corrlelation coefficient between separation and orientation on the mean equivalent coefficient are also presented.

Recently, silk sericin has been studied extensively for biomedical and cosmetic applications because of its unique properties, including UV resistance and wound healing ability. For use in applications, sericin is fabricated in various forms including films and gels. However, the mechanical properties of sericin are too weak. In this basic study on improving the mechanical properties of sericin, a silk sericin aqueous solution was separated into two layers by centrifugation. The solution viscosity, molecular conformation, and mechanical properties of each separation layer of the sericin were examined. Sericin from the lower layer had a higher solution viscosity and film mechanical properties (strength and strain) than that from the upper layer, implying that sericin from the lower layer had a higher molecular weight than that from the upper layer. The molecular conformation of the sericin films varied depending on the casting solvent. In aqueous solution, the sericin film from the lower layer showed a ${\beta}$-sheet conformation, whereas that from the upper layer displayed a random coil conformation. All the sericin films showed a highly ${\beta}$-sheet-crystallized state when cast in formic acid, regardless of the separation layer.
