  • In Korea, the apartment buildings have been constructed recently in large quantities to provide housing due to the gravitation of population towards large cities. However, because of this trend toward high-rise apartment, a number of problems are occurred such as the deterioration of comfort in the dwelling environment and the lack of solar access right in apartment buildings. In the building law, the sunshine hour and the minimal separated distance between apartment buildings as regulated as the criteria for the site planning. Most of site planners, however, designed the apartment site only following minimum separated distance. As a result, the problem of sunshine hours lack is caused and legal dispute concerning solar access right is also arisen. The purpose of this study is to improve solar access right regulation and to help site design of apartment planning. Accordingly, we execute empirical analysis based on computer simulation in order to find suitable separated distance between typically designed apartment buildings. First, we estimated sunshine hours according to independent building orientation, height, and length. Second, we calculated sunshine hours in various case of apartment arrangement; parallel type, courtyard type, tower type and etc. with various separated distance.

  • Given separated points divided by a line, called a wall, in a plane, we aim to make a gate in the wall to connect the separated points to each other. In this setting, the problem is to find a location for the gate that minimizes the average distance between the points. The problem is a variant of the well-known facility location problem, which is extensively studied in the fields of operations research, location theory, theoretical computer science, and so on. In this paper, we consider the $L^1$-distance of the points in the plane. The points are projected onto the wall and so the problem is transformed to a proximity problem of points on a line. Then it is shown that the transformed problem is related to the weighted median problem of points on the line. Therefore, we obtain an O(n log n)-time algorithm to solve our problem.

  • Recently, the apartment building has been constructed in large quantities to provide housings due to the gravitation of population towards large cities. However, we're faced with a critical problem of deterioration of our dwelling environment caused by the trend toward high-rise apartment which could be an obstruction in obtaining sufficient sunlight. Therefore, there have been several legislative actions against infringement on the right of sunshine. In the building law, sunshine hours and the minimal separated distance between apartments are regulated as the criteria for the site planning, However, the minimal separated distance was defined without consideration of the parameters like building orientation and thermal effect of the sunshine hours in the site planning for the apartment building. In this study, the sunshine hours and heating energy during the underheated season for various arrangements in site planning are carefully considered and analyzed.

  • Recently, due to the effective land utilization and environmental protection, the construction of 2-arch tunnel has been gradually increased. In spite of this tendency, the mechanical information for the 2-arch tunnel, especially such as its behavior characteristics and mechanism are not enough. Therefore in this study, the theoretical and numerical studies on the behavior characteristics of 2-arch tunnel are carried out and longitudinal optimum separated distance of tunnel face is proposed by considering the analysis results from the behavior of advanced excavation of tunnel and stress of central pillar. As a result, longitudinal optimum separated distance of tunnel face is in 0.5D for the better safety of 2-arch tunnel by rapidly decreasing the stress concentration of central pillar.

  • The changes in earth pressure and ground settlement due to underground excavation near an existing retaining wall were studied experimentally according to the separation distance between the underground excavation and the retaining wall. In addition, this study attempted to experimentally prove that the arching phenomenon occurred during the construction of the underground space. A model tank having 120 cm in length, 160 cm in height, and 40 cm in width was manufactured to simulate underground excavation through the use of five separated base wall bodies. The variation of earth pressure on the retaining wall was measured according to the underground excavation phase through the use of 10 separated right wall bodies. The results showed that the earth pressure on the retaining wall was changed by the lowering of the first base bottom wall; however, the earth pressure was not changed significantly by the lowering of the third base bottom wall, since the third base wall had sufficient separation distance from the retaining wall. Lowering of the first base wall induced a decrease in the earth pressure in the lower part of the retaining wall; in contrast, lowering of the first base wall induced an increase in the earth pressure in the middle part of the retaining wall, proving the arching effect experimentally. It is necessary to consider the changes in earth pressure on the retaining wall in designing earth retaining structures for sections where the arching effect occurs.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new ultrasonic distance measurement system with high accuracy and long range. To improve accuracy and enlarge range, the time of flight of ultrasonic is calculated by the period detecting method. In the proposed ultrasonic distance measurement system, the ultrasonic transmitter and receiver are separated but synchronized by RF(Radio frequency) module. The experiment has been implemented from short distance 1m to maximum available distance 30m. And the period detecting method is compared with the conventional threshold level method. Experimental results show the accuracy and range of the distance measurement are improved by this period detecting method.

  • Currently, separated buses were increased to limit a fault currents in power transmission system. However, separated buses caused bad influences such as a decrease of reliability and stability. Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was proposed to limit a fault current lately and that has many merits beside any other solutions. Therefore, we proposed the install of Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) in power transmission system with separated bus. And our proposal was verified by reliability of power system.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of a separated captive body in flow field around aircraft are studied to observe aerodynamic stability for safe separation from aircraft. Since the captive body separated from aircraft is initially exposed to unsteady flow pattern, the change of aerodynamic forces and moments should be measured to analyze how the flow pattern affects on the captive body at the vicinity of aircraft. Aerodynamic forces and moments of the separated captive body are measured at selected positions along predictable dropping trajectories. The measuring trajectories, generated by the free drop test of the dropping model in the wind tunnel, are consisted of 9 possible lines by free dropped trajectories. Experimental results show that the aerodynamic forces and moments are significantly varied with the distance between the captive body and aircraft. In conclusion, the change of aerodynamic characteristics within flow field around aircraft should be considered to simulate trajectories of the separated captive body from aircraft.

  • In this paper, a real-time vehicle detection and tracking algorithms is proposed. The vehicle detection could be processed using GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) algorithm and mathematical morphological processing with HD CCTV camera images. The vehicle tracking based on separated vehicle object was performed using Euclidean distance between detected object. In more detail, background could be estimated using GMM from CCTV input image signal and then object could be separated from difference image of the input image and background image. At the next stage, candidated objects were reformed by using mathematical morphological processing. Finally, vehicle object could be detected using vehicle size informations dependent on distance and vehicle type in tunnel. The vehicle tracking performed using Euclidean distance between the objects in the video frames. Through computer simulation using recoded real video signal in tunnel, it is shown that the proposed system works well.
