  • Purpose: This study was conducted to determine the predictors of cultural sensitivity for nursing students in Korea. Methods: The participants in this study were 332 nursing students. Data collection was conducted through the use of questionnaires which were constructed to include a Cultural Sensitivity Scale, Knowledge of Culture, Interpersonal Reaction Index, and Self-efficacy Scale. Results: Results showed that cultural sensitivity of nursing students was middle range. Knowledge level of culture was very low. There was a significant positive correlation between cultural sensitivity and knowledge of culture, empathy, and self-efficacy. The significant factors influencing cultural sensitivity of nursing students were empathy, self-efficacy, experience of an overseas trip and awareness of cultural education. These four factors explained 23.8% of the variance in cultural sensitivity of nursing students. Conclusion: These results indicate that cultural sensitivity is an important link with empathy and self-efficacy in nursing students. For nursing students to enhance cultural sensitivity, a transcultural nursing curriculum needs to develop for appropriate and effective services in cross-cultural situations of the multicultural families in Korea.

  • Background: To determine the cut-off values of the preoperative risk of malignancy index (RMI) used in differentiating benign or malignant adnexal masses and to determine their significance in differential diagnosis by comparison of different systems. Materials and Methods: 191 operated women were assessed retrospectively. RMI of 1, 2, 3 and 4; cut-off values for an effective benign or malignant differentiation together with sensitivity, specificity, negative and positive predictive values were calculated. Results: Cut-off value for RMI 1 was found to be 250; there was significant (p<0.001) compatibility at this level with sensitivity of 60%, positive predictive value (PPV) of 75%, specificity of 93%, negative predictive value (NPV) of 88% and an overall compliance rate of 85%. When RMI 2 and 3 was obtained with a cut-off value of 200, there was significant (p<0.001) compatibility at this level for RMI 2 with sensitivity of 67%, PPV of 67%, specificity of 89%, NPV of 89%, histopathologic correlation of 84% while RMI 3 had significant (p<0.001) compatibility at the same level with sensitivity of 63%, PPV of 69%, specificity of 91%, NPV of 88% and a histopathologic correlation of 84%. Significant (p<0.001) compatibility for RMI 4 with a sensitivity of 67%, PPV of 73%, specificity of 92%, NPV of 89% and a histopathologic correlation of 86% was obtained at the cut-off level 400. Conclusions: RMI have a significant predictability in differentiating benign and malignant adnexal masses, thus can effectively be used in clinical practice.

  • A highly sensitive refractive index bio-sensor based on grating-assisted strip directional coupler (GASDC) is proposed. The sensor is designed using two asymmetric strip waveguides with a top-loaded grating structure in one of the waveguides. Maximum light couples from one waveguide to the other at the resonance wavelength satisfying phase-matching condition (PMC), and it shows that the change in phase-matching condition with the change in refractive index of the analyte medium in the cover region can be used as a measure of the sensitivity. The proposed sensor will be an on-chip device with a high refractive index sensitivity, and the sensor configuration offers a low propagation loss, thereby enhancing the sensitivity. Furthermore, variation of the sensitivity with the waveguide parameters of sensor is evaluated to optimize the design.

  • Recent years voltage collapse phenomenon have a great attention to power system engineers. As the system size increases the voltage problem shows a very complicated and the reactive power contol problem becomes more difficult. This paper gives an efficient methods for calculating voltage collapse proximity index based on the reactive power loss sensitivity and real power loss sensitivity. The system voltages are tightly associated with the system reactive power, so the proposed voltage collapse proximity index is very usefull for the system voltage control problems. Numerical examples showed a good and reliable results.

  • Dynamic cutting force variations in milling process were measured indirectly using spindle motor current. Magnitude of the spindle motor current is independent of cutting direction. Quasi-static sensitivity of the spindle motor current is higher than that of the feed motor current. Dynamic sensitivity of the spindle motor current is lower but cutting force was correctly represented by spindle RMS current in rough milling. In rough milling, chipping and tool fracture were well detected by the proposed tool fracture index using spindle motor current.

  • A general procedure for determining the optimum location of suspension hard points with respect to kinematic design parametes is presented. Suspensions are modeled as connection of rigid bodies by ideal kinematic joints. Constraint equations of the kinematic joints are expressed in terms of the generalized coordinates and hard points. By directly differentiating the constraint equations with respect to the hard points, kinematic sencitivity equations are obtained. In order to cope with algebraic complexity associated with the differentiation process, a symbolic computation technique is used. A performance index is defined in terms of static design parameters such as camber, caster, toe, ect.. Gradient of the performance index can be analytically computed from the kinematic sensitivity equations. Optimization results show the effectiveness and validity of the procedure, which is applicable to any type of suspension if its kinematic configurations are given.

  • This paper presents the effect of the voltage proximity index for the voltage collpase in power systems. The reactive generation limits are considered for the determination of the voltage proximity index. This paper also shows how the VAR investment ranking order works by the sensitivity index(proximity index). Simulation has carried out with the IEEE 14 bus system and has shown the voltage proximity index working well.

  • In this paper we present a simple and efficient robust optimal design formulation for MEMS structures and its application to a resonant-type micro probe. The basic idea is to use the gradient index (GI) to improve robustness of the objective and constraint functions. In the robust optimal design procedure, a deterministic optimization for performance of MEMS structures is followed by design sensitivity analysis with respect to uncertainties such as fabrication errors and change of operating conditions. During the process of deterministic optimization and sensitivity analysis, dominant performance and uncertain variables are identified to define GI. The GI is incorporated as a term of objective and constraint functions in the robust optimal design formulation to make both performance and robustness improved. While most previous approaches for robust optimal design require statistical information on design variations, the proposed GI based method needs no such information and therefore is cost-effective and easily applicable to early design stages. For the micro probe example, robust optimums are obtained to satisfy the targets for the measurement sensitivity and they are compared in terms of robustness and production yield with the deterministic optimums through the Monte Carlo simulation. This method, although shown for MEMS structures, may as well be easily applied to conventional mechanical structures where information on uncertainties is lacking but robustness is highly important.

  • Objective : To evaluate the sensory processing ability in relation to parenting stress and find the sensory modulation areas affecting the parenting stress in disabled children Methods : Parents of 124 children with disabilities between 3 to 7 years receiving occupational therapy in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do made out the questionnaire and in items of questionnaire, Short Sensory Profile and Parenting Stress Index of short form was included. Results : Among general information, parenting stress of parents had significant correlation with the degree of disability and correlation with the lower level 2 of Parenting Stress Index. The more sensory processing disability was increased, the more parenting stress was increased. Parenting stress showed the significant correlation with movement sensitivity area and under-responsiveness/behaivor area seeking specific stimulation among sensory processing areas and had significant correlation with tactile sensitivity and auditory filtering. Sensory processing areas which affect the most the Parenting Stress were movement sensitivity and under-responsiveness/behaivor area seeking the specific behavior among sensory control disabilities. Conclusion : The parenting stress of parents with the disabled children had the correlation with sensory processing ability. The difficulty of sensory processing increased the parenting stress. Hence, in order to improve children's sensory processing ability, the appropriately coping program should be developed and the appropriate intervention for improvement of sensory processing ability of children will be necessary.
