The routine analysis of milk chemical components is of major importance both for the management of animals in dairy farms and for quality control in dairy industries. NIRS technology is an analytical technique which greatly simplifies this routine. One of the most critical aspects in NIRS analysis of milk is sample preparation and analysis modes which should be fast and straightforward. An important difficulty when obtaining NIR spectra of milk is the high water content (80 to 90%) of this product, since water absorbs most of the infrared radiation, and, therefore, limits the accuracy of calibrating for other constituents. To avoid this problem, the DESIR system was set up. Other ways of radiation-sample interaction adapted for liquids or semi-liquids exist, which are practically instantaneous and with limited or null necessity of sample preparation: Transmission and Folded Transmission or Transflectance. The objective of the present work is to compare the precision and accuracy of milk calibration equations in two analysis modes: Reflectance (dry milk) and Folded Transmission (liquid milk). A FOSS-NIR Systems 6500 I spectrophotometer (400-2500 nm) provided with a spinning module was used. Two NIR spectroscopic methods for milk analysis were compared: a) folded transmission: liquid milk samples in a 0.1 pathlength sample cell (ref. IH-0345) and b) reflectance: dried milk samples in glass fibre filters placed in a standard ring cell. A set of 101 milk samples was used to develop the calibration equations, for the two NIR analysis modes, to predict casein, protein, fat and dry matter contents, and 48 milk samples to predict Somatic Cell Count (SCC). The calibrations obtained for protein, fat and dry matter have an excellent quantitative prediction power, since they present $r^2$ values higher than 0.9. The $r^2$ values are slightly lower for casein and SCC (0.88 and 0.89 respectively), but they still are sufficiently high. The accuracy of casein, protein and SCC equations is not affected by the analysis modes, since their ETVC values are very similar in reflectance and folded transmission (0.19% vs 0.21%; 0.16% vs 0.19% and 55.57% vs 53.11% respectively), Lower SECV values were obtained for the prediction of fat and dry matter with the folded transmission equations (0.14% and 0.25% respectively) compared to the results with the reflectance ones (0.43% and 0.34% respectively). In terms of accuracy and speed of analytical response, NIRS analysis of liquid milk is recommended (folded transmission), since the drying procedure takes 24 hours. However, both analysis modes offer satisfactory results.

Yellowball (Citrus hybrid cv. Yellowball ) is a new citrus hybrid between Haruka (C. tamurana × natsudaidai ) and Kiyomi (C. unshiu × sinensis) and is known to possess strong antioxidant activity. However, detailed information on the antioxidant components of its peel has not yet been reported. This study evaluated the antioxidant activity of the peel and identified the antioxidant components by fractionating a methanolic extract of Yellowball peels using liquid-liquid extraction with n-hexane, ethyl ether (ether), ethyl acetate (EA), butanol, and water. The phenolic contents and antioxidant activities of the n-hexane, ether, and EA fractions were higher than those of the other fractions, and these fractions were further separated by semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Four antioxidant peaks, EA1, EA2, EA3, and He1, were isolated and analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time- of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-Q-TOF MS). Sinapoyl glucoside and hesperidin were identified in EA2 and EA3, respectively, and a polymethoxylated flavone (PMF) complex (5-hydroxy-3,6,7,8,3',4'-hexamethoxyflavone, natsudaidain, tetrameth- oxyflavone, and tangeretin) was identified in He1. A compound in EA1 with m/z 223.0246 [M-H] could not be identified and was named unknown2. The antioxidant activity of unknown2 (IC50=69.17 ㎍/mL) was similar to that of Trolox, which was noted as a major antioxidant in Yellowball peel. Further studies on the antioxidant capacity of Yellowball peel are required; however, these results provide a foundation for using Yellowball peel as an antioxidant.
Aerenchyma development in rice (Oryza sativa L.) roots is quite important for adaptation to waterlogged or reduced soil conditions. Anatomical observations were carried out to clarify the development of schizogenous and lysigenous aerenchyma in elongating crown roots of rice. The crown roots of 3rd and 4th phytomer were taken from rice plants of the 8th leaf stage grown by hydroponic culture. The schizogenous intercellular spaces in the cortex of crown root tip were observed using a light microscope with semi ultra-thin sections and the lysigenous aerenchyma in mature tissue of crown root were observed using a cryo scanning electron microscope (cryo-SEM) with freezing fracture method. The schizogenous intercellular spaces in the root tip exist obviously in the middle portion of cortical cell layers close to the root-root cap junction, but not in root cap, stele and outer cell layers of cortex. The air spaces were formed at the junction of four neighbouring cells of inner cortex in the transverse sections, and between longitudinal cell layer connected along the root axis. Although many of those spaces were filled with liquid, some spaces seem to exist as air spaces. The lysigenous aerenchyma in the cortex, which hardly filled with liquid, emerged at 3-4 cm segment from the root tip and increased toward the basal region of root axis. The developing process of lysigenous aerenchyma was primarily separation of a radial row of cells caused by the shrinking and collapsing of cortical cells and then formation of septa along the radial cell rows by the fusion of cell wall with each other. These results suggest that the schizogenous and lysigenous aerenchyma playa role as a passage for the movement of oxygen into the root tip region where oxygen is required for respiration.

Cyst is pathologic disease develops in hard tissue as well as soft tissue, which is lined by epithelium filled with liquid, semi-liquid, or air. Origins and symptoms of the cyst are various according to region, and symptoms are malocclusion, diversion of root, tooth mobility, periapical swelling, discoloration and lesion expansion, because the odontogenic cysts begin in the numerous rests of odontogenic epithelium. But almost cysts produce no symptoms unless secondary infection occurs. Treatment of small cysts may include extraction, endodontic therapy, and apical surgery. Treatment of a large cysts usually involves surgical removal (enucleation), Marsupialization(a method of decompression) or combination of two before mentioned. Bone graft is done for helping of bone defect healing at the same time of enucleation This clinical research from January 2000 to December 2005, analyzed by the age, sex, classification, size, region, treatment method, whether or not of bone graft of cyst in the jaw in Daegu Catholic University Hospital.
To study the effect of freezing rate on the duality of frozen abalone(Haliotis gigantea, GMELIN) liquid nitrogen spray freezing, air blast freezing, semi-air blast freezing, and still air freezing were carried out. The rheological change, protein denaturation, and free water content of frozen and thawed abalone were examined at the period of 0, 1, 2, and 3 month during cold Storage at $-20^{\circ}C$. The results are summarized as follows : 1. The onset and duration of rigor mortis of fresh abalone was faster and shorter as compared to that of fishes. 2. There was no difference in compression value and shear value between freezing methods but they varied with a slight decrease in storage period. 3. Gradual decrease in extractibility of salt soluble protein was observed in all samples except those frozen with liquid nitrogen. 4. The free water of the foot muscle remained constant during the storage while that of the adductor muscle tended to increase. 5. A significant correlation was observed among the changes of panel texture and free water (P< 0.01), protein denaturation (P<0.05), and compression value (P<0.01).
Molecular motion influencing the absorption spectrum of a chromophore in liquid is theoretically described by a quantum mechanical time correlation function. In the present paper, we developed a theoretical method to calculate such a quantum mechanical time-correlation function from a classical time-correlation function using semi-classical approximations. The calculated time-correlation function was combined with the second order cumulant expansion method to calculate the absorption spectrum of nile blue in acetonitrile. Reasonably good agreement with experimental spectrum was obtained. From the comparison with experimental spectrum, we concluded that the time scale of solvation dynamics of the system should be longer then 1ps and the first shell of solvent is the major contribution to the solvation dynamics.
We review SAFT equation of state (EOS) which is based on TPT theory and statistical-mechanical principles, and confirm that it can be used as a useful tool to predict vapor-liquid phase equilibria of associating fluid mixtures. We examine theoretical structure of PC-SAFT EOS in great detail, and then assess the applicability and performance of the EOS while applying it to various mixtures containing nonpolar components, polar components and associating components in a stage-wise manner. In contrast to the conventional engineering EOS, PC-SAFT EOS can accurately predict nonideal behaviors of those mixtures without using semi-empirical binary interaction parameter. This is because the SAFT theory is based on a rigorous theoretical framework at molecular level which effectively accounts for various intermolecular interactions, and it thus provides substantial benefits in applying the SAFT EOS to complex thermodynamic phenomena of multi-component mixtures.
Doxorubicin is an anthracycline-family polyketide compound with a very potent anti-cancer activity, typically produced by Streptomyces peucetius. In order to increase doxurubicin productivity, a semi-industrial doxorubicin-producing Streptomyces strain named BR-Dox was cultured in a R2YE liquid medium containing CaCO$_3$, and then converted to a cell wall-free protoplast using lysozyme treatment method, followed by PEG-mediated cell wall regeneration. Among several protoplast-regenerated Streptomyces BR-Dox strains, two independent isolates named BR-Dox4 and BR-Dox6 were visually selected using thin layer chromatography (TLC) based on the pigment overproducing phenotype. Comparing with Streptomyces BR-Dox parental strain, two protoplast-regenerated strains, BR-Dox4 and BR-Dox6 exhibited 25.2% and 12.2% higher doxorubicin productivity analyzed by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), respectively. This result suggests that a protoplast-regeneration of an antibiotics-producing Streptomyces strain should be a promising strain development approach for antibiotics overproduction in Streptomyces species.
Relatively large quantity of the major components of saponin, $ginsenoside-Rb_1,\;-Rb_2,\;-Rc,\;-Rd,\;-Re\;and\;-Rg_1$ from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer were isolated using preparative and semipreparative high performance liquid chromatography, and analyzed by analytical HPLC. The application of HPLC for isolation of ginsenosides was not only very effective for rapid analysis but also reduced the isolation time. The isolation capacity of pure ginsenosides was $30{\sim}50mg/hr$.
Using a strain-controlled rheometer [Rheometrics Dynamic Analyzer (RDA II)], the steady shear flow properties of a semi-solid ointment base (vaseline) have been measured over a wide range of shear rates at temperature range of $25{\sim}60^{\circ}C$. In this article, the steady shear flow properties (shear stress, steady shear viscosity and yield stress) were reported from the experimentally obtained data and the effects of shear rate as well as temperature on these properties were discussed in detail. In addition, several inelastic-viscoplastic flow models including a yield stress parameter were employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady shear flow behavior, and then the applicability of these models was examined by calculating the various material parameters (yield stress, consistency index and flow behavior index). Main findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) At temperature range lower than $40^{\circ}C$, vaseline is regarded as a viscoplastic material having a finite magnitude of yield stress and its flow behavior beyond a yield stress shows a shear-thinning (or pseudo-plastic) feature, indicating a decrease in steady shear viscosity as an increase in shear rate. At this temperature range, the flow curve of vaseline has two inflection points and the first inflection point occurring at relatively lower shear rate corresponds to a static yield stress. The static yield stress of vaseline is decreased with increasing temperature and takes place at a lower shear rate, due to a progressive breakdown of three dimensional network structure. (2) At temperature range higher than $45^{\circ}C$, vaseline becomes a viscous liquid with no yield stress and its flow character exhibits a Newtonian behavior, demonstrating a constant steady shear viscosity regardless of an increase in shear rate. With increasing temperature, vaseline begins to show a Newtonian behavior at a lower shear rate range, indicating that the microcrystalline structure is completely destroyed due to a synergic effect of high temperature and shear deformation. (3) Over a whole range of temperatures tested, the Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable and have an almostly equivalent ability to quantitatively describe the steady shear flow behavior of vaseline, whereas the Bingham, Casson, and Vocadlo models do not give a good ability.
