Dynamic Bulging Behavior Analysis by Finite Difference Method in High Speed Continuous Casting of Thin Slab (유한 차분법에 의한 Thin Slab 고속 연속주조의 동적벌징 거동해석)

  • Continuous casting process has been adopted increasingly in recent years to save both energy and labor. It has experienced a rapid development in the production of semi-finished steel products, rep lacing the conventional route of ingot casting and rolling. In order to achieve this merit, however, more studies about the mechanism between roll and slab are needed. In this paper, a dynamic bulging in steel cast slabs was simulated by considering the solidification and heat transfer. This study is to prevent internal cracks of a slab in a bending and unbending zone. The value of moving strand shell bulging between two supporting rollers under the ferrostatic pressure and slab-self weight has been calculated in terms of creep and elasto-plasticity. The strain and strain rate distributions in solidified shell undergoing a series of bulging are calculated with working boundary conditions.

Prediction of Remaining Life Time and Determination of Inspection Cycle Considering Critical Crack in Tension Bar of Continuous Ship Unloader (연속식 하역기 텐션바의 임계 균열을 고려한 잔존수명 예측 및 검사 주기 선정)

  • The Continuous Ship Unloader (CSU) is an equipment that unloads freight from the ship docked in the port to the land. And the design target life time is designed to be 30 to 50 years, and it is classified as a semi-permanent large facility. However, cracks may occur due to structural defects, abnormal loads, and corrosion, and fatigue failure may occur before the design life is reached. In this study, we predicted the remaining life time of the main component of the CSU considering crack. And also proposed inspection cycle for maintenance of CSU based on the results of the remaining life time prediction. For this purpose, the structure, operational stresses of the CSU were analyzed and main members were selected. And tensile tests and fatigue crack propagation tests were performed with SM490YA and SM570TMC, which are used as main materials for CSU.

Assessment of Biological Toxicity Monitoring in Water Using Sulfur Oxidizing Bacteria (하천수의 생태독성을 파악하기 위한 황산화미생물의 이용가능성 평가)

  • BACKGROUND: Inappropriate discharge of wastewaters and industrial effluents are becoming detrimental to the aquatic environment. The presence of toxic substances on wastewaters can be detected by physicochemical and biological methods. However, physicochemical methods do not give any information about biological toxicity. Therefore, in this study we tried to detect the presence of toxic substance on waters using sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) as a bioassay. MATERIALS AND RESULTS: The SOB biosensor was first stabilized using synthetic stream water and operated in both continuous and semi-continuous mode. When the SOB biosensor was operated in continuous mode, the effluent electrical conductivity (EC) stabilized at~1.72 dS/m. While in the case of semi-continuous, the EC stabilized at~0.6 dS/m. The SOB system was also operated at different reaction times to ascertain the shortest reaction time for monitoring the toxicity. Finally, the SOB biosensor was fed with nitrite as toxic substance. When 5 mg/L of nitrite was added to the SOB system, the EC decreased immediately. However, the EC recovered after few cycle. CONCLUSION: This study shows that the SOB biosensor can be used as warning system to protect aquatic environment from hazardous materials. Although SOB biosensor can not give specific information about the toxic substances, it can assess whether the water is toxic or not.

Emission Characteristics of Elemental Constituents in Fine Particulate Matter Using a Semi-continuous Measurement System (준 실시간 측정시스템을 이용한 미세입자 원소성분 배출특성 조사)

  • Fine particulate matter < $1.8{\mu}m$ was collected as a slurry using the Semicontinuous Elements in Aerosol Sampler with time resolution of 30-min between May 23 and 27, 2002 at the Sydney Supersite, Florida, USA. Concentrations of 11 elements, i.e., Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se, and Zn, in the collected slurry samples were determined off-line by simultaneous multi-element graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. Temporal profiles of $SO_2$ and elemental concentrations combined with meteorological parameters such as wind direction and wind speed indicate that some transient events in their concentrations are highly correlated with the periods when the plume from an animal feed supplement processing facility influenced the Sydney sampling site. The peaking concentrations of the elemental species during the transient events varied clearly as the plume intensity varied, but the relative concentrations for As, Cr, Pb, and Zn with respect to Cd showed almost consistent values. During the transient events, metal concentrations increased by factors of >10~100 due to the influence of consistent plumes from an individual stationary source. Also the multi-variate air dispersion receptor model, which was previously developed by Park et al. (2005), was applied to ambient $SO_2$ and 8 elements (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) measurements between 20:00 May 23 and 09:30 May 24 when winds blew from between 70 and $85^{\circ}$, in which animal feed processing plant is situated, to determine emission and ambient source contributions rates of $SO_2$ and elements from one animal feed processing plant. Agreement between observed and predicted $SO_2$ concentrations was excellent (R of 0.99; and their ratio, $1.09{\pm}0.35$) when one emission source was used in the model. Average ratios of observed and predicted concentrations for As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and Zn varied from $0.83{\pm}0.26$ for Pb to $1.12{\pm}0.53$ for Cd.

Characteristics of Visibility Impairment by Semi-Continuous Optical and Chemical Property Monitoring of Aerosols in Seoul (에어로졸의 광학 및 화학 특성 준실시간 모니터링을 통한 서울지역 시정 감쇄 분석)

  • The characteristics of aerosol light extinction were investigated by comparing measured and calculated extinction coefficient to understand the contribution of air pollutants on visibility impairment for data during 4 months (Jan~ April), 2014. The integrated nephelometer and aethalometer system were installed to measure the scattering and absorption coefficients of aerosol as well as BAM 1020, MARGA, semi-continuous OCEC analyzer, and online-XRF to calculate the extinction coefficient. The IMPROVE_2005 equation was used to determine the contributions of different chemical components on visibility impairment in $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{10}$ due to highest correlation with measured data. Sulfate, nitrate, and organic mass by carbon (OMC) of fine aerosol were the major contributors affecting on visibility impairment. Total contributions to light extinction were calculated as $631.0Mm^{-1}$ for the worst-case and $64.4Mm^{-1}$ for the best-case. The concentrations of aerosol component for the worst-case were 38.4 times and 45.5 times larger than those of the best-case for $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and $NH_4NO_3$, respectively. At lower visibility condition, in which extinction coefficient was higher than $400Mm^{-1}$, extinction coefficient varied according to the relative humidity variation regardless of $PM_{2.5}$.

A Study on Hybrid Structure of Semi-Continuous HMM and RBF for Speaker Independent Speech Recognition (화자 독립 음성 인식을 위한 반연속 HMM과 RBF의 혼합 구조에 관한 연구)

  • It is the hybrid structure of HMM and neural network(NN) that shows high recognition rate in speech recognition algorithms. And it is a method which has majorities of statistical model and neural network model respectively. In this study, we propose a new style of the hybrid structure of semi-continuous HMM(SCHMM) and radial basis function(RBF), which re-estimates weighting coefficients probability affecting observation probability after Baum-Welch estimation. The proposed method takes account of the similarity of basis Auction of RBF's hidden layer and SCHMM's probability density functions so as to discriminate speech signals sensibly through the learned and estimated weighting coefficients of RBF. As simulation results show that the recognition rates of the hybrid structure SCHMM/RBF are higher than those of SCHMM in unlearned speakers' recognition experiment, the proposed method has been proved to be one which has more sensible property in recognition than SCHMM.

  • This paper describes the implementation and the evaluation of the speech recognition automatic exchange system. The system provides government or public offices, companies, educational institutions that are composed of large number of members and parts with exchange service using speech recognition technology. The recognizer of the system is a Speaker-Independent, Isolated-word, Flexible-Vocabulary recognizer based on SCHMM(Semi-Continuous Hidden Markov Model). For real-time implementation, DSP TMS320C32 made in Texas Instrument Inc. is used. The system operating terminal including the diagnosis of speech recognition DSP and the alternation of speech recognition candidates makes operation easy. In this experiment, 8 speakers pronounced words of 1,300 vocabulary related to automatic exchange system over wire telephone network and the recognition system achieved 91.5% of word accuracy.

Speech Recognition in Noisy environment using Transition Constrained HMM (천이 제한 HMM을 이용한 잡음 환경에서의 음성 인식)

  • In this paper, transition constrained Hidden Markov Model(HMM) in which the transition between states occur only within prescribed time slot is proposed and the performance is evaluated in the noisy environment. The transition constrained HMM can explicitly limit the state durations and accurately de scribe the temporal structure of speech signal simply and efficiently. The transition constrained HMM is not only superior to the conventional HMM but also require much less computation time. In order to evaluate the performance of the transition constrained HMM, speaker independent isolated word recognition experiments were conducted using semi-continuous HMM with the noisy speech for 20, 10, 0 dB SNR. Experiment results show that the proposed method is robust to the environmental noise. The 81.08% and 75.36% word recognition rates for conventional HMM was increased by 7.31% and 10.35%, respectively, by using transition constrained HMM when two kinds of noises are added with 10dB SNR.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a method improving the performance of a semi-continuous hidden Markov model(SCHMM) speaker adaptation system which uses Bayesian Parameter reestimation approach. The performance of Bayesian speaker adaptation could be degraded in case that the features of a new speaker are severely different from those of a reference codebook. The excessive codewords of the reference codebook still remain after adaptation proess. which cause confusion in recognition process. To solve such problems, the proposed method uses formant information which is extracted from the cepstral coefficients of the reference codebook and adaptation data. The reference codebook is adapted to represent the formant distribution of a new speaker and it is used for Bayesian speaker adaptation as an initial codebook. The proposed method provides accurate correspondence between reference codebook and adaptation data. It was observed that the excessive codewords were not selected during recognition process. The experimental results showed that the proposed method improved the recognition performance.

Extraction and Identification of Volatile Isothiocyanates from Wasabi using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (초임계 이산화탄소를 이용한 고추냉이로부터 휘발성 Isothiocyanates류 추출 및 동정)

  • The aim of this study was to identifyisothiocyanates (ITCs) from wasabi (Wasabi japonica Matsum) using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCO_2$) and to compare the composition in the extracts between $SCO_2$ and organic solvents extraction. A semi-continuous high pressure apparatus was used to extract wasabi (roots, stems and leaves) at following conditions pressure 80$\sim$120 bar, temperature $40\sim50^{\circ}C$. Ether, ethanol, chloroform and dichloromethane were used as organic solvents. The ITCs extracted by means of both separation technologies were analyzed by a gas chromatography system. As the results of study, AITC and ITCs were highly extracted at 40$^{\circ}C$ and 80 bar. To extract AITC from wasabi, $SCO_2$ extraction is more effective than organic solvents extraction, resulted in thermal degeneration and remaining of organic solvents.
