Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the musculo-skeletal pain prevalence and severity in the dental hygienists based on PRECEDE model. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 483 dental hygienists in Gwangju from September 13 to October 12, 2013. Data were analyzed by frequency analysis, chi-square test, t-test, and multiple logistic regression analysis using SPSS 18.0 program. Musculo-skeletal pain severity was classified from 1 to 5 by PRECEDE model. The questionnaire consisted of six questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, one question of musculo-skeletal pain prevalence, one question of body part musculo-skeletal pain prevalence, one question of subjective health status, three questions of activities of daily living, six questions of working environment, one question of musculoskeletal system diseases knowledge, two questions of social support, two questions of education experience and data use method, and five questions of necessity of health education. Results: The prevalence rate of musculo-skeletal pain within a year was 83.9% and 22.8% of the dental hygienists complained of severe pain. The odds ratio of moderate pain severity was 1.99(95% CI, 1.10-3.60) and the odds ratio of unhealthiness was 3.27 (95% CI, 1.35-7.94). The odds ratio of pain severity in those working for 4-6 years was 0.21(95% CI, 0.08-0.57). The odds ratio of pain severity in those practicing 6-10 scaling cases per day was 0.33(95% CI, 0.17-0.65). The odds ratio of pain severity in wrist turning and bending was 3.56(95% CI, 1.19-10.62). Conclusions: The muscolu-skeletal pain severity in the dental hygienists was closely associated with subjective health condition, work duration, the number of scaling practice activity, and a treatment posture. Regular physical checkup for the dental hygienists will improve the musculo-skeletal pain due to scaling practice.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate third and forth year dental students' perception towards dental hygienists as professionals. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 602 dental college students in Korea after receiving the informed consent. Except incomplete answers, 217 data were analyzed. The questionnaire consisted of three questions of the general perception towards dental hygienists, four questions of the cooperation relationship to the dental hygienists, four questions of oral health education, five questions of preventive dental health care, five questions of dental treatment cooperation, and five questions of dental health care management. The data were analyzed using PASW Statistics 18.0(SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Results: Most of the dental college students viewed the dental hygienists as professionals. However, they did not exactly know the professional job of dental hygienists within the current national medical services system and they often viewed the dental hygienists as a medical assistant. The dental college students thought that the key role of the dental hygienists is the dental assisting. Only a small fraction of the participants recognized oral health promotion, preventive cares, and hospital management as professional roles of dental hygienists. Conclusions : Dental college students' perception towards dental hygienists as professionals needs to be improved. Understanding the job description of dental hygienists clearly is a crucial part of dental students' learning process and future practice.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of organizational communication satisfaction on the job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention in the dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 227 dental hygienists in Chungnam. The questionnaire consisted of 4 questions of general characteristics of the subjects, 8 questions of interpersonal stress, 12 questions of organizational communication satisfaction, 5 questions of job satisfaction, 5 questions of organizational commitment, and 5 questions of turnover intention. The four variables were measured by Likert 7 point scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 18.0 for frequency analysis, t test, one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise regression analysis. Sobel test was used to verify the mediating effects. Results: The interpersonal stress was proportional to turnover intention and inversely proportional to the organizational communication satisfaction, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment(p<0.01). The organizational communication satisfaction was proportional to the job satisfaction and organizational commitment, and inversely proportional to turnover intention(p<0.01). The interpersonal stress had a meditating effect between organizational communication satisfaction, and job satisfaction. It also gave the mediating effect between organizational communication satisfaction and organizational commitment. Conclusions: The effective organization management system can enhance the job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention reduction in the dental hygienists.

Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the related factors to dental fear in some adults. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 320 adults in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from April to June, 2013. Except 14 incomplete answers, data were analyzed by SPSS 18.0 program. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(7 questions), dental fear related factor(18 questions), distrust for dentist(15 questions), and distrust for dental hygienist(11 questions). The instrument for dental treatment fear was Dental fear Survey(DFS) adapted from Kleinknecht and partly modified by Choi. Out of 20 questions, 18 questions were reconstructed and score by Likert 5 scale. Higher score means higher dental fear. Cronbach alpha was 0.959 in the study. The distrust for dentist and dental hygienist was adapted from Choi and reconstructed and score by Likert 5 scale. Higher score means higher distrust for dentist and dental hygienist. Cronbach alpha was 0.937 in distrust for dentist and 0.874 in distrust for dental hygienist in the study. Results: Those who experienced dental pain tended to have dental fear. The reasons for dental fear were as follows; bad breath(2.96 out of 5 points, hereafter represented as of 2.96/5), dental caries(2.88/5), missing teeth(2.87/5) and tooth pain(2.77/5). The distrust for the dentist was the main dental fear in the adults. Conclusions: The dental fear was closely related to gender, experience of dental pain, oral symptoms and distrust for the dentist. As the psychological pain in the patients was mainly influenced by the trustful atmosphere, it is necessary to make the patient easy before treatment.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between emotional labor, burnout and turnover intention in the dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 326 dental hygienists in Seoul and Gyeonggido from September to October, 2013. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 15.0 program. The questionnaire consisted of nine questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, ten questions of turnover intention, and fourteen questions of burnout. Each question was measured by Likert 5 point scale. Results: There was a significant difference in workplace and monthly income which had an impact on emotional expression(p<0.05). There was a significant difference in current workplace and monthly income which had an impact on emotional dissonance(p<0.05). Burnout had a significant difference(p<0.05) in age, religion, and turnover intention current workplace, employment condition, and the number of turnover. There was a positive correlation between burnout and turnover intention. It was shown that Emotional labor had a positive correlation with burnout and turnover intention and the explanation power was 18.1%. Conclusions: The dental hygienists are one of the most vulnerable emotional labor workers and are apt to feel exhaustion from the job and turnover intention. It is necessary to prepare for the burnout and turnover intention in the dental hygienists.

The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effects of middle school students' participation in after-school sports on psychological well-being. A survey was conducted on 280 students in 7th, 8th, and 9th grades attending two middle schools in Gongju-si, Chungnam, for one month from September 8 to October 17, 2019. The scale developed by Ryff (1995) was used to measure psychological stability. Subfactors including self-acceptance (6 questions), positive interpersonal relationships (5 questions), autonomy (6 questions), environmental control (5 questions), purpose of life (5 questions), and personal growth (5 questions) comprised a total of 32 questions measured on the Likert 5-point scale. The internal fit score (Cronbach's alpha) was .76-.83, with 146 students (52.1%) participating in after-school sports activities. The effect was high in the participant group. All variables, including the six subfactors, were verified statistically. These findings are consistent with the studies of Kang Myung-hwa (2011) and Kim Pan-su (2012), which reported that the sports activities of middle school students directly affect the development of emotions. This study verified the need to strengthen after-school sports activities and to engage problem children. After-school sports activities should be reviewed in the context of social issues that are becoming increasingly serious.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the influencing factors of subjective awareness of dental health status on the use of dental hygienic devices. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 320 patients who visited dental clinics in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do from May to June 2014. Except incomplete answers, 284 copies were analyzed by SPSS WIN 18.0 program. The questionnaire was adapted from Park & Youn, and Chae. The questionnaire consisted of five questions of the general characteristics of the subjects, one question of subjective dental health status, eight questions of awareness of dental hygienic devices, and eight questions of use of dental hygienic devices. Results: Although the awareness of self dental health state was shown to statistically significantly affect the awareness of dental hygiene devices(p<0.001) which is the dependent variable, it was shown to not affect the use. Conclusions: Based on such results, to improve and maintain the dental health, an individual's subjective dental health state should be identified and provide accurate and objective information on the dental hygiene devices that are suitable to individual dental state, as well as make the patient's use of dental hygiene devices increase through continuous boosting of motivation.
A 15-minute questionnaire on breast-feeding was administered to the obstetric and pediatric residents and nurses in metropolitan academic training programs in Korea to assess their attitudes to and knowledge about breast-feeding and their confidence in managing breast-feeding problems. The questionnaires were self-administered and confidential and the participants was 279. Overall, the study participants indicated a supportive attitude toward breast-feeding. Nurses had a highest supportive attitude than obstetric and pediatric residents. Their self-confidence in this area was inappropriately high with 48% of total, 49% of obstetric, 42% of pediatric and 58% of nurses describing themselves as "confident" or "very confident" to manage common breast-feeding problems to compare their knowledge level answering only 46% of the questions correctly. However, nurses who did have continuing education about breast-feeding had significantly high in knowledge level. These health care professionals have extremely limited knowledge of breast-feeding management compared to their reported confidence. To be truly supportive of breast-feeding, health care professionals should receive didactic and clinical training to breast-feeding management.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the perception of clinical trials of dental hygienist. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 126 dental hygienists in Seoul, Kyonggi and other area from October 1 to November 15, 2012. The instrument of the study was adapted from Jung and reconstructed. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects(9 questions) and recognition for clinical trials(10 questions). Recognition for clinical trials instrument included recognition for clinical trial conception(2 questions), objective recognition(5 questions), and subjective recognition for clinical trial(3 questions). The instrument was score by Likert 5 scale and Cronbach alpha was 0.936 in the study. Data were analyzed by SPSS 20.0 program and set at p<0.05. Independent t-test, chi-square test, one way ANOVA, and post-hoc Duncan test were done. Results: Those who had higher ages and higher education tended to have longer clinical careers(p<0.05). There was a significant difference in clinical trials between the level of education, clinical dental hygienists and professors. The differences in problem perception for activation of clinical trial according to workplace appeared to lack of publicity and inadequacy of facilities(p<0.05). Conclusions: To improve the perception of the clinical trials in dental hygienists, it is necessary to prepare the human resources programs, the additional curricula, continuing education courses and active publicity.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of happiness index in dental hygienists. This study can be used to improve the quality of life and the turnover intention in the dental hygienists. Methods: The subjects were 281 dental hygienists in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and Chungcheong province. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by the subjects. The questionnaire consisted of 7 questions of general characteristics of the subjects, 7 questions of dental hygiene performance, and 9 questions of happiness index. The instrument for happiness index was modified from Suh and Koo. Cronbach's alpha was 0.850 in the happiness index measure by Likert 7 scale. The instrument for professionalism was modified from Baek and consisted of 25 questions measure by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.694 in the professionalism. The instrument for turnover intention was modified from Lee and consisted of 5 questions measured by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha was 0.712 in turnover intention. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. for one way ANOVA, Duncan posthoc test, Pearson correlation coefficients and hierarchical regression. Results: The means of happiness index, professionalism and turnover intention of subjects were 4.44, 3.06 and 3.05, respectively. The happiness index was higher in those who are married(4.66), those who have high income, and those who have careers in dental hygienists(4.61). There were significant differences in the happiness index by the average daily working hours, place of treatment, work intensity and off duty hours. Conclusions: This study suggests that improvement of the happiness index in clinical dental hygienists requires the continuing and systematic education program and administrative support that can reduce the turnover intention.
