  • A huge amount of financial information in large databases makes performance comparisons among organizations difficult or at least very time-consuming. This paper investigates whether neural networks in the form of self-organizing maps can be effectively employed to perform a competitive benchmarking in large databases. By using self-organizing maps, we expect to overcome problems associated with finding appropriate underlying distributions and functional forms of underlying data. The method also offers a way of visualizing the results. The database in this study consists of annual financial reports of 100 biggest Korean companies over the years 1998, 1999, and 2000.

  • Using 1991 FDIC financial statement data, we develop fuzzy clusters of the data set. We also identify the distinctive characteristics of the fuzzy clustering algorithm and compare the closest hard-partitioning result of the fuzzy clustering algorithm with the outcomes of two self-organizing neural networks. When nine clusters are used, our analysis shows that the fuzzy clustering method distinctly groups failed and extreme performance banks from control (healthy) banks. The experimental results also show that the fuzzy clustering method and the self-organizing neural networks are promising tools in identifying potentially failing banks.

  • In this study, the new methodology which combines Kohonen self-organizing map(KSOM) neural networks model and the conventional neural networks models such as feedforward neural networks model and generalized neural networks model is introduced to forecast flood stage in Nakdong river, Republic of Korea. It is possible to train without output data in KSOM neural networks model. KSOM neural networks model is used to classify the input data before it combines with the conventional neural networks model. Four types of models such as SOM-FFNNM-BP, SOM-GRNNM-GA, FFNNM-BP, and GRNNM-GA are used to train and test performances respectively. From the statistical analysis for training and testing performances, SOM-GRNNM-GA shows the best results compared with the other models such as SOM-FFNNM-BP, FFNNM-BP, and GRNNM-GA and FFNNM-BP shows vice-versa. From this study, we can suggest the new methodology to forecast flood stage and construct flood warning system in river basin.

  • This paper considers reinforcement learning control with the self-organizing map. Reinforcement learning uses the observable states of objective system and signals from interaction of the system and the environments as input data. For fast learning in neural network training, it is necessary to reduce learning data. In this paper, we use the self-organizing map to parition the observable states. Partitioning states reduces the number of learning data which is used for training neural networks. And neural dynamic programming design method is used for the controller. For evaluating the designed reinforcement learning controller, an inverted pendulum of the cart system is simulated. The designed controller is composed of serial connection of self-organizing map and two Multi-layer Feed-Forward Neural Networks.

  • The article discusses the features of adaptation of the parameters of the physical layer of data transmission in self-organizing networks based on unmanned aerial vehicles operating in the conditions of "smart cities". The concept of cities of this type is defined, the historical path of formation, the current state and prospects for further development in the aspect of transition to "smart cities" of the third generation are shown. Cities of this type are aimed at providing more comfortable and safe living conditions for citizens and autonomous automated work of all components of the urban economy. The perspective of the development of urban mobile automated technical means of infocommunications is shown, one of the leading directions of which is the creation and active use of wireless self-organizing networks based on unmanned aerial vehicles. The advantages of using small-sized unmanned aerial vehicles for organizing networks of this type are considered, as well as the range of tasks to be solved in the conditions of modern "smart cities". It is shown that for the transition to self-organizing networks in the conditions of "smart cities" of the third generation, it is necessary to ensure the adaptation of various levels of OSI network models to dynamically changing operating conditions, which is especially important for the physical layer. To maintain an acceptable level of the value of the bit error probability when transmitting command and telemetry data, it is proposed to adaptively change the coding rate depending on the signal-to-noise ratio at the receiver input (or on the number of channel decoder errors), and when transmitting payload data, it is also proposed to adaptively change the coding rate together with the choice of modulation methods that differ in energy and spectral efficiency. As options for the practical implementation of these solutions, it is proposed to use an approach based on the principles of neuro-fuzzy control, for which examples of determining the boundaries of theoretically achievable efficiency are given.

  • In this paper, we propose self-organizing schemes for the initial configuration of the neighbor cell list (NCL), maintenance of the NCL, and physical cell identifier (PCI) allocation in heterogeneous networks such as long term evolution systems where lower transmission power nodes are additionally deployed in macrocell networks. Accurate NCL maintenance is required for efficient PCI allocation and for avoiding handover delay and redundantly increased system overhead. Proposed self-organizing schemes for the initial NCL configuration and PCI allocation are based on evolved universal terrestrial radio access network NodeB (eNB) scanning that measures reference signal to interference and noise ratio and reference symbol received power, respectively, transmitted from adjacent eNBs. On the other hand, the maintenance of the NCL is managed by adding or removing cells based on periodic user equipment measurements. We provide performance analysis of the proposed schemes under various scenarios in the respects of NCL detection probability, NCL false alarm rate, handover delay area ratio, PCI conflict ratio, etc.

  • This paper introduces a new architecture of genetically optimized self-organizing fuzzy polynomial neural networks by means of information granulation. The conventional SOFPNNs developed so far are based on mechanisms of self-organization and evolutionary optimization. The augmented genetically optimized SOFPNN using Information Granulation (namely IG_gSOFPNN) results in a structurally and parametrically optimized model and comes with a higher level of flexibility in comparison to the one we encounter in the conventional FPNN. With the aid of the information granulation, we determine the initial location (apexes) of membership functions and initial values of polynomial function being used in the premised and consequence part of the fuzzy rules respectively. The GA-based design procedure being applied at each layer of genetically optimized self-organizing fuzzy polynomial neural networks leads to the selection of preferred nodes with specific local characteristics (such as the number of input variables, the order of the polynomial, a collection of the specific subset of input variables, and the number of membership function) available within the network. To evaluate the performance of the IG_gSOFPNN, the model is experimented with using gas furnace process data. A comparative analysis shows that the proposed IG_gSOFPNN is model with higher accuracy as well as more superb predictive capability than intelligent models presented previously.

  • We propose a new category of neurofuzzy networks- Self-organizing Neural Networks(SONN) with fuzzy polynomial neurons(FPNs) and discuss a comprehensive design methodology supporting their development. Two kinds of SONN architectures, namely a basic SONN and a modified SONN architecture are dicussed. Each of them comes with two types such as the generic and the advanced type. SONN dwells on the ideas of fuzzy rule-based computing and neural networks. Simulation involves a series of synthetic as well as experimental data used across various neurofuzzy systems. A comparative analysis is included as well.

  • Self Organizing Maps(SOM) by Kohonen is very fast algorithm in neural networks. But it doesn't show sure rules of training results. In this paper, we introduce to Bayesian Learning for Self Organizing Maps(BLSOM) which combines self organizing maps with Bayesian learning. So it supports explanatory power of models and improves prediction. BLSOM has global optima anywhere but SOM has not. This is proved by experiment in this paper.
