Self-Actualization of College Students in Distance Education Analyzed from Nursing Counseling (정신간호상담에서 나타난 방송통신 대학생의 자아실현 분석)

  • This study was to explore the level of self-actualization of the students in Korea Air and Correspondence University. The study subjects consisted of 507 students who visited the counseling center for taking advices to several psychosocial problems due to distance education through nursing counseling. The self actualization of the subjects evaluated by the self-actualization Inventory standardized by Kim and Lee in Korea. It consisted of 130 two-choice comparative value and behavior judgements. The items also consisted of two basic scales: one is inner directed scale (107 items) and the other is time competence (23 items) which included eight subscales, each of which measures a conceptually important element of self-actualization. Analysis of finding was as follows: 1) The self-actualization mean score of the total subjects was characterized by normal value within normal range of scale. The highest subscale score was NC scale: the lowest scale was EX scale. 2) The mean score of time competence scale of female student was higher than male student's time competence scale. 3) There was no significant differences in self aclualization among 4 groups in age. 4) There was also no significant differences in self-actualization between the group taken one time nursing counseling and the group taken two more times nursing counseling. 5) The problems of Job, learning, personality and further study, significantly had effects on the score of self-actualization level.

The Influencing Factors on Self-actualization in Middle-aged Women (중년여성의 자아실현과 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factor to self actualization in middle-aged women. Method: The subjects for this study were 191 middle-aged women selected by convenience sampling in three cities. Data collection was done using a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression. Result: The results of this study were as follows: 1. The relationship between self-efficacy, social support, self esteem, motivation for achievement, parental satisfaction with children and self-actualization were found to have statistically significant positive correlations. But the relationship between depression and self-actualization were found to have statistically significant negative correlation. 2. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the most powerful predictor was social support. Social support, motivation for achievement and self esteem accounted for 38.1% of the variance in self-actualization in middle aged women. Conclusion: According to these results, it is recommended that in order to enhance self-actualization in middle-aged women, empowerment of social support, motivation for achievement and self esteem should be pursued.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand what needs housewife volunteers want to be satisfied with and try to find the way to satisfy them, examining empirically their participation motivation and activity satisfaction. The major findings of the study were as follows: 1) the housewife volunteers’participation motivation was composed self-developmental, self-actualization, altruistic dimensions and the mean score of self-actualization was the highest. 2) the self-development motivation was proved significantly different in housewives’age, their last child’s age, religion. the altruistic motivation was proved significantly different in their religion. 3) the housewife volunteers’activity satisfaction was proved significantly different in the level of self-developmental motivation, self-actualization, and altruistic motivation. Namely, the higher the level of self-development motivation, self-actualization, and altruistic motivation was, the higher activity satisfaction was. 4) the variables that influence on housewife volunteers’activity satisfaction were family support, self-development motivation, self-actualization, job appropriateness.

A Study on Self-Actualization Level of junior College Nursing Students (간호전문대학생의 자아실현에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to Identify the self-actualization level of Junior College Nursing Students and to analyze the variables that may be related to self-actualization. A convenient sample of 346 students were selected from three colleges located in Seoul and Kyungki-Province. The data were collected using a direct survey method from September17to October 2, 1992. The instrument used for this study was the self-actualization test modified by Kim & Lee(1983). The collected data were analyzed using percentages, means, 1-test, X$^2$-test, ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation coefficient, with the SPSSPC$^{+}$ Package. The results of this study are as follows : 1) The self-actualization level of subjects was moderate. The subjects showed higher scores in the areas of Self actualizing Values and Nature of Man than the standardized normal groups. The subjects showed lower scores in the areas of Inner Directed Existentiality, Self acceptance and Capacity for Intimate Contact. 2) The subjects attending day junior colleges showed higher scores in the areas of Time competent, Existentiality and Self Acceptance than those attending college in the evening. The subjects attending evening junior colleges showed higher scores in the areas of Spontaneity than those attending college by day. 3) The junior students showed higher scores in the areas of Feel-ing Reactivity than freshman. The students with no religion showed higher scores in the areas of existentiality than those who had a religion. The group who had the experience of failure on the college entrance examination showed lower scores in the areas of Nature of Man than those without this experience. Those who chose their major voluntary showed scores higher in the areas of I nor Directed, Self Actualizing Values, Spontaneity and Self regard than the unsatisfied group. The group satisfied with college life showed higher scores in the areas of Time Competent, Inner Directed, Self Actualizing Values and Self Regard than the unsatisfied group. In conclusion self actualization level depends on motivation of choice, satisfaction with nursing as a major and satisfaction with college life. Therefore, and effective guidance program is required to improve motivation and satisfaction with nursing as a major and with college life.

  • In this study female college students having high interest in fashion were selected by homogeneous purposive sampling. The students were classified into two groups. 301 Students living in Chinju were asked on self-actualization and design preference. The date of respondents were analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficients and t-test. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. The line preference, chroma, thickness and weight of clothing textile were different in these two groups. 2. The students of individuality had self-actualization, feeling reactivity, self-regard, existentiality and capacity of intimate contact. 3. There were significant relation between self-actualization and the preference for clothing form, color and texture in two groups.

The Influence of Forest Experience on the Self-Actualization (삼림내(森林內) 경험(經驗)이 자아실현(自我實現)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • Self-actualization has been suggested as one of the psychological or health benefits of forest experience. This study was designed to determine to what extent participation on five-week National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) courses increased the self-actualization of participants and whether individual characteristics were correlated with the change, Data were collected at NOLS during the summer of 1987 using pretest-posttest control group design, Significant positive increases in self-actualization were found. However, individual characteristics such as sex, age, previous forest experience, place of residence and education level showed no significant effect on self-actualization change.

A Study of college Women's view on Marriage According to Self-Actualization Degree -centering around seoul city- (여대생의 自我實現性에 따른 결혼관에 관한 연구-서울시를 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of this study is to apprehend college women's views on marriage in order to systematize the view theoretically, and to investigate the relationship between the self-actualization and their marriage perspective. Futhermore, it is my hope to provide some basic materials for making an desirable view on marriage. The measuring tools used for preparing this study are self-actualization test, which were designed originally by Shostrom and standardized to be suitable for Korean society by Kim Jae Ean and Lee Kwang Ja and a questionnaire about one's view on marriage. Statistical methods such as frequency, percentile, arithmetic mean, analysis of variances(X2 and F values)were used for data analysis. The results of this study are as follows; 1) It is revealed that more than half(59.7%) of the college women achieve normal or above normal degree of self-actualization. 2)It is revealed that most college women's attitude toward matrimony is positive and they have a large acquaintance with the opposite sex. Especially, they are eager to became employed after entering into matrimony. 3) It is revealed that the more satisfaction a college woman's mother feels about her own matrimony, the more positive attitude her daughter has toward marriage. some college women who do not want to have a child have a positive attitude toward divorce. This means that their matrimony depends upon their view of marriage. 4) It is revealed that the more self-actualization college women feel, the more negative attitude they have toward selecting their husband. 5)It is revealed that the less self-actualization college women feel, the more negative attitude they have toward having a large acquaintance with the opposite sex and they have a dependent attitude toward living with their parents 6) It is revealed that most college women want their husband to have higher academic career than hers regardless of her own self-actualization degree and they want have a job after entering into matrimony. It seems to be dispassionate reflection of contemporary thought.

A Study on the Relation between Husband and Wife's Self-Actualization and Joint Decision-Making (자아실현성과 공동의사결정에 관한 연구 - 남편과 부인을 중심으로)

  • This study was mainly concerned providing a basic of data for the more reasonable home management. The purpose study was to investigate the relationship of husbands and wives self-actualization and degree of joint decision-making. For the purpose of this study 500 questionaire were distributed to the marital in seoul. The 412 data were analized by Frequency, Percentage, T-test, ANOVA, Scheffe-test. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1) Over one and half of husbands and wives are try to be self-actualized. 2) The tendency of the husbands and wives decision-making was joint decision-making. 3) The important influential variables on the husbands and wives self-actualization husbands were age, life-cycle, job employment motivation. And wives were life-cycle, education, income, job, employment motivation. 4) The important influential variables on the joint decision-making were age, number of child, life-cycle. 5) A marital joint decision-making level differs significantly, according to the degree of husbands and wives self-actualization. The higher level of husbands and wives self-actualization, the higher degree of marital joint decision-making. The result of this study implies that a marital joint-making necessary in order to carry on happy home management and the reasonable home administration.

A Study on the Changing in Self-actualization of Nursing College Students after a Voluntary Program (사회봉사 교과목 수강전후 간호학생들의 자아실현 비교연구)

  • The Effect of Curriculum with voluntary program on Self-Actualization in Nursing Students. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of the voluntary program experience with curriculum on self-actualization in nursing college students and to guide the desirable voluntary activity of college students. The research design utilized in this study was one group pretest-posttest design. The data were gathered two times with self-actualization test. First data were gathered before voluntary activity. And second data were gathered after instruction and five times voluntary activity. The data were analized by frequency, t-test, paired t-test and ANOVA using the SAS program. The results were as follows: The scores of self-actualization in nursing students belonged to normal range. Before voluntary activity, the scores were significantly higher than standardized group in Nature of Man, Constructive Scale (P<.001), and the scores were significantly lower than standardized group in Feeling Reactivity Scale(P<.05) and Capacity for Intimate Construct Sscale (P<.001). After the activity the scores were significantly higher than standardized group in Self Actualizing Values Scale(P<.001), Existentiality (P<.01), Spontaneity Scale (P<.001). Self Acceptance Scale(P<.05) and Nature of Man, Constructive Scale (P<.001). After the activity the scores were significantly increased more than before the activity in Inner Directed Scale (P<.001). Self Actualizing Values Scale (P<.001), Feeling Reactivity Scale (P<.001), Capacity for Intimate Construct Sscale (P<.001). Spontaneity Scale (P<.01), Time Competent Scale (P<.05) and Existentiality (P<.05). And the scores were not significantly increased more than before the activity in Self Regard Scale, Self Acceptance Scale and Nature of Man, Constructive Scale. The results of this study showed that voluntary activities were effective self-actualization. So, it is thought that voluntary program is necessary in the curriculum for nursing college students. This study suggests as follows : 1) It is necessary to inspect the self-actualization test after various experience of voluntary activity in college students. 2) It is necessary to grope the plans to activate the social service programs. 3) It is necessary to study continious and voluntary social service of college students.

Nurses단 Role Models, Perceptions Toward Occupation, Self-Actualization Value and the Phases of Socialization Process (임상간호원의 사회화과정단계에 있어서의 역할모델, 직업에 대한 지각향성 및 자아실현성간의 관계)

  • This study was designed to investigate the changes of nurses' role model, perceptions toward occupation, and self actualization value in terms of the phases of socialization process. Two hundred and sixty nine nurses working in clinical settings were randomly selected from 15 general hospitals despersed over Seoul and Kyungki province. Data were gathered by the standardized Perceptual Orientation Test, the Self-actualization Test, and Questionnaires on role models and phases of socialization process developed by the investigators from October 1985 to March 1986. The data were analysed by ANOVA and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. The results were as follows: 1. The average time period required for the shift of phases of socialization process were; phase Ⅰ, role adjustment, took average 10 months of employment: Phase Ⅱ, interpersonal adjustment, 12 months: and Phase Ⅲ, role conflict, 15 months respectively. Conflict resolution, phase Ⅳ, began to take place 18 months of employment; and shifted to phase V, internalization and self-actualization at 25 months of employment. 2. Throughout 5 consecutive phase, the number of immediate superior nurse model was dominantly the highest among the role models. The number of head nurse role model increased at phase Ⅱ, phase Ⅲ, and phase Ⅳ. Respondents with school model in phase I tended to transfer to work model at phase Ⅱ. 3. The perceptions toward occupation were not significantly influenced by the Phases of socialization process. 4. The score of self-actualization value was not significantly influenced by the phases of socialization process. 5. In regard to perceptions toward occupation, nursing director model group showed significantly lower score in phase I (p<.01). 6. The comparison of self-actualization value between the 5 phases revealed significant difference in phase I: in particular among respondents with school model at p<.05. To conclude: 1. The phase Ⅲ of socialization process is the period of role conflict which occur at 15 months of employment, an6 conflict resolution, phase Ⅳ, begins at 18 months of employment on the average in clinical settings. 2. The immediate superior nurse and the head nurse are important role models for nurses all through their socialization process.
