  • The Multiethnic Cohort Study was designed to study prospectively the relationship of diet and other lifestyle factors to the risk of cancer. The cohort was established in 1993-1996 in Hawaii and California (primarily Los Angeles) and included a representative sample of more than 215,000 men and women primarily from five different ethnic groups: Japanese, whites, Native Hawaiians, Latinos, and African- Americans. Because of the emphasis on diet, great attention was paid to developing and pre-testing a self-administered quantitative food frequency questionnaire that would adequately assess food and nutrient intakes in these groups. An extensive food composition database was also created for the study. In addition, during data collection, a calibration study was conducted that makes possible adjustment for measurement error in nutrient intakes and valid comparison of intakes across the several ethnic groups. At the present time, blood and urine specimens are being collected from cohort participants and should yield a biorepository of more than 80,000 subjects. Baseline data indicate that the cohort is well representative of the general population of Hawaii and California, so that results can be generalized. These data also show a wide range in dietary intakes and in other lifestyle variables that should facilitate the testing of etiologic hypotheses.

  • This paper describes the nonlinear dynamic motion behavior of a ship equipped with a portable dynamic positioning (DP) control system, under external forces. The waves, current, wind, and drifting forces were considered in the calculations. A self-tuning controller based on a neuro-fuzzy algorithm was used to control the rotation speed of the outboard thrusters for the optimal adjustment of the ship position and heading and for path tracking. Time-domain simulations for ship motion with six degrees of freedom with the DP system were performed using the fourth-order RungeeKutta method. The results showed that the path and heading deviations were within acceptable ranges for the control method used. The portable DP system is a practical alternative for ships lacking professional DP facilities.

  • As pressure transducers are employed in many fields such as production facilities, test facilities vehicles and industrial machinery, there is an increasing need for high precision measurement of pressure without any calibration or maintenance. In this paper, we discuss the development of a smart thin film pressure transducer which is highly suitable for a precise measurement of pressure. The smart functions include automatic zero tracking, automatic span adjustment, temperature compenstion, continuous self-diagnostics for faults (open strain gages, abnormal data, incorrect A/D conversion, and overpressure), data memory and multi-drop communication with PC

  • Through fuzzy logic controller is very useful to many areas, it is difficult to build up the rule-base by experience and trial-error. So, effective self-tuning fuzzy controller for the position control of ball and beam is designed. In this paper, we developed the neural network control system with fuzzy-neuron which conducts the adjustment process for the parameters to satisfy have nonlinear property of the ball and beam system. The proposed algorithm is based on a fuzzy logic control system using a neural network learinign algorithm which is a back-propagation algorithm. This system learn membership functions with input variables. The purpose of the design is to control the position of the ball along the track by manipulating the angualr position of the serve. As a result, it is concluded that the neural network control system with fuzzy-neuron is more effective than the conventional fuzzy system.

  • The influence of spindle immersion depth on the determination of glass melt viscosity was examined in rotating cylinder method. The exact adjustment of spindle immersion depth into soda lime silicate standard glass melts could be peformed by self-constructed electric system. The results showed a slight dependence of viscosity value on the immersion depth change of spindle shaft. The viscosity error per unit length of spindle was 0.4%/mm under the present cylinder dimension.

  • SAMSUNG Electronics has developed a SCAR.A robot system, SM3, which is applicable to several assembly, inspection, and adjustment tasks. This robot system drives by AC servo motors has attained a .theta.1 and .theta.2 axis maximum composite speed of 5.4 m/sec, a repeatability of .+-.05 mm, and a cycle time of 1.2 sea. The robot controller based on three 8086 and one 8087 processors consists of the main controller, the joint position controller, and the motor controller. The robot controller has plentiful self-diagnosis and control capabilities, and can be interfaced to other external device. The robot language FARAL Is designed such that every task is easily programmed. In this paper, the main features of the body, controller, and FARAL of SM3 will be described. In particular, the control method designed for a stable and fast robot motion will be explained. Finally, the future development will be addressed.

  • The goal of this research is to develop a Heel/Side Laster and control GUI(Graphic User Interface) for adaptive manufacturing. For this purpose, we have analyzed the working sequences of heel/side laster, and developed a control program that will facilitate the machineries with functions that are suitable for adaptive manufacturing. We also made it possible to modify the gluing path with simple manipulation of CAD data. By providing a user-friendly GUI, we made it possible for unskilled workers use the system without difficulty. In addition, we have developed a flexible environment where the already available CAD data can be modified and saved with ease. Automatic feeding and path control algorithms for thermoplastic cement were also implemented. By using the Heel/Side Laster for adaptive manufacturing, we are able to achieve increased productivity and work efficiency while improving the quality of the product with self-diagnosis and fine adjustment function.

  • This study first focuses on the quantitative evaluation of both compulsory and voluntary safety certification of industrial machines and devices. Based on the results of statistical analysis, effectiveness of those safety certifications were confirmed. In order to reduce both the frequency and the strength of industrial accidents associated with industrial machines and devices, major target of safety regulations needs to be shifted from users to manufacturers. Adjustment of industrial machines and devices which are subject to compulsory safety certification and implementation of risk assessment are further suggested. As for the voluntary certification, reestablishment of the concept of voluntary safety certification and balance between compulsory and voluntary certifications is discussed. Voluntary safety certification is further suggested as a mean to manage safety of industrial machines and devices which are not subject to any safety regulations.

  • Rapid social change affects residential environments and this in turn creates new stimuli to which people have to adapt. These stimuli have been seen to increase stress levels. Therefore, dwellers in these environments try to reduce stress through various methods. The purpose of this paper is to: 1) identify the general trends of coping styles about residential environmental stress, 2) analyze the differences in socio-demographic characteristics and how the physical characteristics of buildings affect stress, find out how personal backgrounds affect stress levels and the ability to get rid of environmental-related stress. The subjects in this study consisted of people living in multi-family housing in Gwang-ju. The city is divided into 5 districts and used quota sampling. 324 housewives were surveyed from the households by self-administered questionnaires. The survey was conducted in December, 2006, after the questionnaire was revised based on the results of preliminary survey. After all the questionnaires were collected, the data was coded and analyzed using the SPSS 12.0 program.

  • As a quality of dyadic relationships in the family, individuation refers to the interplay between the connectedness and separateness of family members. The aims of this study were: 1) to develop of the newly measure of Korean late adolescent's individuation; 2) to examine the reliability and validity of the newly developed measure. 435(165 male, 270 female) college students completed the Korean Late Adolescent Individuation Questionnare(KLAIQ), and Korean version of the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire(SACQ), and Korean version of the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire(SACQ). Using exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis three subdimensions of individuation were identified: Connectedness(7items), Self-confidence(5 items), and Parent control(4 items). A total 16 items of the KLAIQ were found to have acceptable reliability and face and construct validity. A total 16 items of the KLAIQ were found to have acceptable reliability and face and construct validity. Scale scores from the KLAIQ correlated in the predicted pattern with the SACQ. Individuated students demonstrated the highest college adjustment scores while ambiguous students yielded the lowest. Therefore, it would appear that the KLAIQ can adequately measure individuation in Korean late adolescence.
