In this study, the authors intend to analyze factors contributing to research performance using Backpropagation Neural Network and Support Vector Machine. The analyzing factors contributing to lecturer research performance start from defining the features. The next stage is to collect datasets based on defining features. Then transform the raw dataset into data ready to be processed. After the data is transformed, the next stage is the selection of features. Before the selection of features, the target feature is determined, namely research performance. The selection of features consists of Chi-Square selection (U), and Pearson correlation coefficient (CM). The selection of features produces eight factors contributing to lecturer research performance are Scientific Papers (U: 154.38, CM: 0.79), Number of Citation (U: 95.86, CM: 0.70), Conference (U: 68.67, CM: 0.57), Grade (U: 10.13, CM: 0.29), Grant (U: 35.40, CM: 0.36), IPR (U: 19.81, CM: 0.27), Qualification (U: 2.57, CM: 0.26), and Grant Awardee (U: 2.66, CM: 0.26). To analyze the factors, two data mining classifiers were involved, Backpropagation Neural Networks (BPNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). Evaluation of the data mining classifier with an accuracy score for BPNN of 95 percent, and SVM of 92 percent. The essence of this analysis is not to find the highest accuracy score, but rather whether the factors can pass the test phase with the expected results. The findings of this study reveal the factors that have a significant impact on research performance and vice versa.

This paper presents the novel feature selection method for Emotion Recognition, which may include a lot of original features. Specially, the emotion recognition in this paper treated speech signal with emotion. The feature selection has some benefits on the pattern recognition performance and 'the curse of dimension'. Thus, We implemented a simulator called 'IFS' and those result was applied to a emotion recognition system(ERS), which was also implemented for this research. Our novel feature selection method was basically affected by Reinforcement Learning and since it needs responses from human user, it is called 'Interactive feature Selection'. From performing the IFS, we could get 3 best features and applied to ERS. Comparing those results with randomly selected feature set, The 3 best features were better than the randomly selected feature set.

This paper proposes a machine learning approach for language-independent sentence boundary detection. The proposed method requires no heuristic rules and language-specific features, such as part-of-speech information, a list of abbreviations or proper names. With only the language-independent features, we perform experiments on not only an inflectional language but also an agglutinative language, having fairly different characteristics (in this paper, English and Korean, respectively). In addition, we obtain good performances in both languages. We have also experimented with the methods under a wide range of experimental conditions, especially for the selection of useful features.
Selecting appropriate features that products or services should provide for users has been a critical decision making problem for designers. However, the existing feature selection methods have prominent limitations when figuring out how they perceive the features. For example, selecting features based on the users' preference without analyzing users' mental models might lead to the 'feature creep' phenomenon. In this study, we suggest the 'False belief technique' that is able to detect users' mental model for the products/services that are formed after being provided with new features. This technique will be utilized as a way forward to help the designer to determine what features should be included in the new product development.
Battiti's mutual information feature selector (MIFS) and its variant algorithms are used for many classification applications. Since they ignore feature synergy, MIFS and its variants may cause a big bias when features are combined to cooperate together. Besides, MIFS and its variants estimate feature redundancy regardless of the corresponding classification task. In this paper, we propose an automated greedy feature selection algorithm called conditional mutual information-based feature selection (CMIFS). Based on the link between interaction information and conditional mutual information, CMIFS takes account of both redundancy and synergy interactions of features and identifies discriminative features. In addition, CMIFS combines feature redundancy evaluation with classification tasks. It can decrease the probability of mistaking important features as redundant features in searching process. The experimental results show that CMIFS can achieve higher best-classification-accuracy than MIFS and its variants, with the same or less (nearly 50%) number of features.

Feature selection has become an essential technique to reduce the dimensionality of data sets. Many features are frequently irrelevant or redundant for the classification tasks. The purpose of feature selection is to select relevant features and remove irrelevant and redundant features. Applications of the feature selection range from text processing, face recognition, bioinformatics, speaker verification, and medical diagnosis to financial domains. In this study, we focus on filter methods based on information entropy : IG (Information Gain), FCBF (Fast Correlation Based Filter), and mRMR (minimum Redundancy Maximum Relevance). FCBF has the advantage of reducing computational burden by eliminating the redundant features that satisfy the condition of approximate Markov blanket. However, FCBF considers only the relevance between the feature and the class in order to select the best features, thus failing to take into consideration the interaction between features. In this paper, we propose an improved FCBF to overcome this shortcoming. We also perform a comparative study to evaluate the performance of the proposed method.
We develop a feature selection method that can improve both the efficiency and the effectiveness of classification technique. In this research, we employ case-based reasoning as a classification technique. Basically, this research integrates the two existing feature selection methods, i.e., the univariate analysis and the LVF algorithm. First, we sift some predictive features from the whole set of features using the univariate analysis. Then, we generate all possible subsets of features from these predictive features and measure the inconsistency rate of each subset using the LVF algorithm. Finally, the subset having the lowest inconsistency rate is selected as the best subset of features. We measure the performances of our feature selection method using the data obtained from UCI Machine Learning Repository, and compare them with those of existing methods. The number of selected features and the accuracy of our feature selection method are so satisfactory that the improvements both in efficiency and effectiveness are achieved.

Feature selection is very important for feature-based relation classification tasks. While most of the existing works on feature selection rely on linguistic information acquired using parsers, this letter proposes new features, including probabilistic and semantic relatedness features, to manifest the relatedness between patterns and certain relation types in an explicit way. The impact of each feature set is evaluated using both a chi-square estimator and a performance evaluation. The experiments show that the impact of relatedness features is superior to existing well-known linguistic features, and the contribution of relatedness features cannot be substituted using other normally used linguistic feature sets.

Android is now the most popular smartphone platform and remains rapid growth. There are huge number of sensitive privacy information stored in Android devices. Kinds of methods have been proposed to detect Android malicious applications and protect the privacy information. In this work, we focus on extracting the fine-grained features to maximize the information of Android malware detection, and selecting the least joint features to minimize the number of features. Firstly, permissions and APIs, not only from Android permissions and SDK APIs but also from the developer-defined permissions and third-party library APIs, are extracted as features from the decompiled source codes. Secondly, feature selection methods, including information gain (IG), regularization and particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms, are used to analyze and utilize the correlation between the features to eliminate the redundant data, reduce the feature dimension and mine the useful joint features. Furthermore, regularization and PSO are integrated to create a new joint feature mining method. Experiment results show that the joint feature mining method can utilize the advantages of regularization and PSO, and ensure good performance and efficiency for Android malware detection.
