  • Remote seismic tomography is regarded as one of the most valuable geophysical technique for the estimation of the rock mass classification in the tunnel area where hard data information such as drill logs are absent. But the results of rock mass classification based on the remote seismic tomography tend to be overestimated in practice. In this study, we propose the effective method to implement the seismic reference velocity ratio based on semblance for the improvement of rock mass classification. Also, to verify its feasibility, proposed technique was tested by using the real field data.

  • Design spectra for damping ratios higher than 5% have several important applications in the design of earthquake-resistant structures. These highly damped spectra are usually derived from a 5%-damped reference pseudo-acceleration spectrum by using a damping modification factor. In cases of high damping, the absolute acceleration and the relative velocity spectra instead of the pseudo-acceleration and the pseudo-velocity spectra should be used. This paper elaborates on the recovery of spectral absolute acceleration and spectral relative velocity from their pseudo-spectral counterparts. This is accomplished with the aid of correction factors obtained through extensive parametric studies, which come out to be functions of period and damping ratio.

  • Downhole seismic method is widely used for obtaining shear wave velocity profile of a site because it is simple and economical. Determining accurate travel time of shear wave is very important to obtain reliable result in downhole seismic method. In this paper, comparison study of various travel time determination methods was performed. Numerical study and model chamber test were performed for effective comparison study. Signal traces were acquired by performing downhole test at each numerical simulation and soil box test. Travel time data for each signal traces were determined by using six different methods and Vs profiles were evaluated. Comparing travel time data and Vs profiles with the reference value, the first arrival picking method proved to be ambiguous and unreliable. Other methods also did not always provide accurate results and the magnitude of error was dependent on the signal to noise ratio. Cross-correlation method proved to be the most adequate method for the field application and it was verified additionally with field data.
