In Korean geology that crystalline rock is dominant, the properties of subsurface including the anisotropy are distributed complexly and changed abruptly. Because of such geological environments, cross-hole seismic traveltime tomography is widely used to obtain the high resolution image of the subsurface for the engineering purposes in the geotechnical sites. However, because the cross-hole tomography has a wide propagation angle coverage relatively, its data tend to include the seismic velocity anisotropy comparing with the surface seismic methods. It can cause the misinterpretation that the cross-hole seismic data including the anisotropic effects are analyzed and treated with the general processing techniques assuming the isotropy. Therefore, we need to consider the seismic anisotropy in cross-hole seismic traveltime tomography. The seismic anisotropic tomography algorithm, which is developed for evaluation of the velocity anisotropy, includes several inversion schemes in order to make the inversion process stable and robust. First of all, the set of the inversion parameters is limited to one slowness, two ratios of slowness and one direction of the anisotropy symmetric axis. The ranges of the inversion parameters are localized by the pseudo-beta transform to obtain the reasonable inversion results and the inversion constraints are controlled efficiently by ACB(Active Constraint Balancing) method. Especially, the inversion using the Fresnel volume is applied to the anisotropic tomography and it can make the anisotropic tomography more stable than ray tomography as it widens the propagation angle coverage.
Proper reservoir characterization is an integral part of formation evaluation, reserve estimation and planning of field development. Seismic inversion is a widely employed reservoir characterization tool that provides various rock properties of reservoir intervals. This study presents results of the inversion studies including Geostatistical Inversion carried out on the gas fields, offshore Myanmar. Higher resolution and multiple models can be produced by Geostatistical Inversion using input data such as pre-stack seismic data, well logs, petrophysical relationships and geological inferences for example reservoir shape and lateral extent. Detailed reservoir characterization was required for the development plan of gas fields, and the Geostatistical Inversion studies served as a basis for integrated geological modeling and development well planning.
Downhole testing and seismic CPT (SCPT) have been widely used to evaluate stiffness profiles of the subgrade. Advantages of downhole testing and SCPT such as low cost, easy operation and a simple seismic source have got these testings more frequently adopted in site investigation. For the automated analysis of downhole testing and SCPT, the concept of interval measurements has been practiced. In this paper. a new inversion procedure to deal tilth the interval measurements for the automated downhole testing and SCPT (including a newlydeveloped continuous SCPT) is proposed. The forward modeling in the new inversion procedure incorporates ray path theory based on Snell's law. The formulation for the inversion analysis is derived from the maximum likelihood approach, which estimates the maximum likelihood of obtaining a particular travel time from a source to a receiver. Verification of the new inversion procedure was performed with numerical simulations of SCPT using synthesized profiles. The results of the inversion analyses performed for the synthetic data show that the new inversion analysis is a valid procedure which enhances Va profiles determined by downhole testing and SCPT.
Waveform inversion requires extracting a reliable low frequency content of seismic data for estimating of the low wave number velocity model. The low frequency content of the seismic data is usually discarded or neglected because of the band-limited response of the source and the receivers. In this study, however small the spectral of the low frequency seismic data is, we assume that it is possible to extract a reliable phase information of the low frequency from the seismic data and use it in waveform inversion. To this end, we exploit the frequency domain finite element modeling and source-receiver reciprocity to calculate the $Frech\`{e}t$ derivative of the phase of the seismic data with respect to the earth model parameter such as velocity, and then apply a damped least squares method to invert the phase of the seismic data. Through numerical example, we will attempt to demonstrate the feasibility of our method in estimating the correct velocity model for prestack depth migration.
A seismic waveform inversion for prestack seismic data based on the Gauss-Newton method is presented. The Gauss-Newton method for seismic waveform inversion was proposed in the 80s but has rarely been studied. Extensive computational and memory requirements have been principal difficulties. To overcome this, we used different sizes of grids in the inversion stage from those of grids in the wave propagation simulation, temporal windowing of the simulation and approximation of virtual sources for calculating partial derivatives, and implemented this algorithm on parallel supercomputers. We show that the Gauss-Newton method has high resolving power and convergence rate, and demonstrate potential applications to real seismic data.
The purpose of this study is to investigate concrete flaw using seismic first arrival and various inversion method. Seismic wave propagation was calculated using finite element method in theoretical modelling and tomogram was made using various inversion methods in theoretical and experimental modelling. Five steps of seismic first arrival were selected from FEM results and these data were used to calculate seismic velocity section. According to the results, exact seismic first arrival picking method was proposed and experimental modelling was conducted.
Compared with the separated inversion of electromagnetic (EM) and seismic data, a joint inversion using both EM and seismic data reduces the uncertainty and gives the opportunity to use the advantage of each data. Seismic fullwaveform inversion allows velocity information with high resolution in complicated subsurface. However, it is an indirect survey which finds the structure containing oil and gas. On the other hand, marine controlled-source EM (mCSEM) inversion can directly indicate the oil and gas using different EM properties of hydrocarbon with marine sediments and cap rocks whereas it has poor resolution than seismic method. In this paper, we have developed a joint EM inversion algorithm using a cross-gradient technique. P-wave velocity structure obtained by full-waveform inversion using plane wave encoding is used as structure constraints to calculate the cross-gradient term in the joint inversion. When the jointinversion algorithm is applied to the synthetic data which are simulated for subsea reservoir exploration, images have been significantly improved over those obtained from separate EM inversion. The results indicate that the developed joint inversion scheme can be applied for detecting reservoir and calculating the accurate oil and gas reserves.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate compatability of seismic source characteristics of the Kern County earthquake to those of Korean Peninsula seismotectonics. The compatability could be used to make Korean type response spectrum from the strong ground motions observed from the assingned earthquake. The July 21, 1952, Kern County, California, earthquake is the largest earthquake to occur in the western U.S. since 1906, and the repeat of this event poses a significant seismic hazard. The Kern County event was a complex thrusting event, with a surface rupture pattern that varied from pure leftlateral strike-slip to pure dip-slip. A time dependent moment tensor inversion was applied to ten observed teleseismic long-period body waves to investigate the source complexity. Since a conventional moment tensor inversion(constant geometry through time) returns a non-double-couple source when the seismic source changes(fault orientation and direction of slip) with time, we are required to use the time dependent moment tensor which allows a first-order mapping of the geometric and temporal complexity. From the moment tensor inversion, a two-point seismic source model with significant overlap for the White Wolf fault, which propagates upward(20 km to 5 km) from SW to NE, fits most of the observed seismic waveforms in the least squares sense. Comparison of P, T and B axes of focal mechanisms and focal depths suggests that seismic source characteristics of the Kern County earthquake is consistant with those of Korean Peninsula Seismotectonics.
The gas hydrate exploration using seismic reflection data, the detection of BSR(Bottom Simulating Reflector) on the seismic section is the most important work flow because the BSR have been interpreted as being formed at the base of a gas hydrate zone. Usually, BSR has some dominant qualitative characteristics on seismic section i.e. Wavelet phase reversal compare to sea bottom signal, Parallel layer with sea bottom, Strong amplitude, Masking phenomenon above the BSR, Cross bedding with other geological layer. Even though a BSR can be selected on seismic section with these guidance, it is not enough to conform as being true BSR. Some other available methods for verifying the BSR with reliable analysis quantitatively i.e. Interval velocity analysis, AVO(Amplitude Variation with Offset)analysis etc. Usually, AVO analysis can be divided by three main parts. The first part is AVO analysis, the second is AVO modeling and the last is AVO inversion. AVO analysis is unique method for detecting the free gas zone on seismic section directly. Therefore it can be a kind of useful analysis method for discriminating true BSR, which might arise from an Possion ratio contrast between high velocity layer, partially hydrated sediment and low velocity layer, water saturated gas sediment. During the AVO interpretation, as the AVO response can be changed depend upon the water saturation ratio, it is confused to discriminate the AVO response of gas layer from dry layer. In that case, the AVO modeling is necessary to generate synthetic seismogram comparing with real data. It can be available to make conclusions from correspondence or lack of correspondence between the two seismograms. AVO inversion process is the method for driving a geological model by iterative operation that the result ing synthetic seismogram matches to real data seismogram wi thin some tolerance level. AVO inversion is a topic of current research and for now there is no general consensus on how the process should be done or even whether is valid for standard seismic data. Unfortunately, there are no well log data acquired from gas hydrate exploration area in Korea. Instead of that data, well log data and seismic data acquired from gas sand area located nearby the gas hydrate exploration area is used to AVO analysis, As the results of AVO modeling, type III AVO anomaly confirmed on the gas sand layer. The Castagna's equation constant value for estimating the S-wave velocity are evaluated as A=0.86190, B=-3845.14431 respectively and water saturation ratio is $50\%$. To calculate the reflection coefficient of synthetic seismogram, the Zoeppritz equation is used. For AVO inversion process, the dataset provided by Hampson-Rushell CO. is used.

Recently, multi-dimensional joint inversion of geophysical data based on fundamentally different physical properties is being actively studied. Joint inversion can provide a way to obtaining much more accurate image of the subsurface structure. Through the joint inversion, furthermore, it is possible to directly estimate non-geophysical material properties from geophysical measurements. In this study, we developed a new algorithm for jointly inverting dc resistivity and seismic traveltime data based on the multiple constraints: (1) structural similarity based on cross-gradient, (2) correlation between two different material properties, and (3) a priori information on the material property distribution. Through the numerical experiments of surface dc resistivity and seismic refraction surveys, the performance of the proposed algorithm was demonstrated and the effects of different regularizations were analyzed. In particular, we showed that the hidden layer problem in the seismic refraction method due to an inter-bedded low velocity layer can be solved by the joint inversion when appropriate constraints are applied.
