This study presents the findings of the structural health monitoring and the real time system identification of one of the first large scale building instrumentations in Turkey for earthquake safety. Within this context, a thorough review of steps in the instrumentation, monitoring is presented and seismic performance evaluation of structures using both nonlinear pushover and nonlinear dynamic time history analysis is carried out. The sensor locations are determined using the optimal sensor placement techniques used in NASA for on orbit modal identification of large space structures. System identification is carried out via the stochastic subspace technique. The results of the study show that under ambient vibrations, stocky buildings can be substantially stiffer than what is predicted by the finite element models due to the presence of a large number of partitioning walls. However, in a severe earthquake, it will not be safe to rely on this resistance due to the fact that once the partitioning walls crack, the bare frame contributes to the lateral stiffness of the building alone. Consequently, the periods obtained from system identification will be closer to those obtained from the FE analysis. A technique to control the validity of the proportional damping assumption is employed that checks the presence of phase difference in displacements of different stories obtained from band pass filtered records and it is confirmed that the "proportional damping assumption" is valid for this structure. Two different techniques are implemented for identifying the influence of the soil structure interaction. The first technique uses the transfer function between the roof and the basement in both directions. The second technique uses a pre-whitening filter on the data obtained from both the basement and the roof. Subsequently the impulse response function is computed from the scaled cross correlation between the input and the output. The overall results showed that the structure will satisfy the life safety performance level in a future earthquake but some soil structure interaction effects should be expected in the North South direction.
This paper briefly reviews the history of the Korean geophysics and analyze the current status of geophysical researches. And the future prospects of geophysics are discussed based on social demands for the science and technology in Korea. About thirty universities offer geophysics courses in their academic curricula. Although the number of Ph.D. graduates in geophysics had been small until the year of 1990, but is rapidly increasing. In recent years about $7{\sim}8$ Ph.D's are produced every year. The major geophysical methods used in Ph.D. theses are seismic, electrical and electromagnetic methods, and earthquake waves and research themes are computational geophysics, which involve data processing, modelling, inversion and tomography, geological structures, and paleomagnetic studies in the order of numbers. The Solid Earth Geophysics is generally distinguished in two categories such as "Global Geophysics" and "Exploration Geophysics". However, they are intimately connected, and overlap in many sectors, especially in large scale research projects. The global geophysics has a more academic and general scientific meaning, and several research groups in Korean universities are carrying out the earthquake seismology and paleomagnetic studies. On the other hand the exploration geophysics focuses on practical application of geophysical concepts, and the public research institutes conduct large projects for exploration of energy and mineral resources and to cope with environmental and natural disaster problems. The geophysical studies for local geology and regional crustal structure utilize various survey methods and usually cover both academic and exploration purposes. The computational geophysics constitutes the indispensable theoretical backgrounds for all geophysical sectors. Many young Korean geophysicists, who have strong background in mathematics and physics, devote to the computational geophysics and several groups have made the internationally highest level achievements. But, Korean geophysicists have to expand their research interests to include more global-scale, high-tech researches and collaborative works with various other science groups.
It was necessary to devise new techniques to overcome and enhance the resolution limits of traveltime tomography. Waveform inversion has been one of the methods for giving very high resolution result. High resolution image could be acquired because waveform inversion used not only phase but amplitude. But waveform inversion was much time consuming Job because forward and backward modeling was needed at each iteration step. Velocity-stress method was used for effective modeling. Resolution limits of imaging methods such as travel time inversion, acoustic and elastic waveform inversion were investigated with numerical models. it was investigated that Resolution limit of waveform inversion was similar tn resolution limit of migration derived by Schuster. Horizontal resolution limit could be improved with increased coverage by adding VSP data in cross hole that had insufficient coverage. Also, waveform inversion was applied to realistic models to evaluate applicability and using initial guess of travel time tomograms to reduce non-linearity of waveform inversion showed that the better reconstructed image could be acquired.
An inversion method regulated by the error in the measurement of the first arrival time was developed, and we conducted a feasibility study by applying the method to a real cross-well seismic data. The inversion is a two-step regulation process; 1) derive the measurement error bound based on the resolution of the velocity image want to derive, and exclude the records whose picking error is larger than the error bound, 2) set the travel time residual to zero if the residual is less than the measurement error. This process prevents the trivial residuals are accumulated and contribute to the velocity-model update. Comparison of two velocity images, one by using all records and another by using the regulate inversion method, shows that the later velocity image exhibits less numerical artefacts, and it also indicates that, according to the Fermat's principle, the latter image is a more feasible velocity model.
Using analytical method, intrinsic absorption and scattering attenuation was lately separated from total quality factor $(Q^{-1}_t)$ on the seismic data of Korean Peninsula. However, we should use numerical method rather than the analytical method to consider depth dependent structure of scattering. The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, as a kind of the numerical method, is good option due to its extended availability from 1 to 3-dimensional model; but there is few study to use it. In this paper, we introduced the analytical method and the DSMC method, and compared the results of the two analysis applied to the isotropic scattering model. While the scattering attenuation coefficients $(\eta_s)$ are identical, the intrinsic absorption coefficients $(\eta_i)$ for the analytical method are larger than those for DSMC method and have large errors. In addition, the $(Q^{-1}_t)$ by the previous studies show closer to DSMC method than analytical method.
Recently intrinsic and scattering quality factor ($\varrho_i^{-1}$ and $\varrho_s^{-1}$) was successfully separated from total quality factor ($\varrho_t^{-1}$) on the seismic data of the Korean Peninsula. From this result, we theoretically calculated the expected coda quality factor ($\varrho_{Cexp}^{-1}$) based on multiple scattering model, and compared with other quality factors such as $\varrho_t^{-1}$, $\varrho_i^{-1}$, $\varrho_s^{-1}$, and observed coda quality factor ($\varrho_c^{-1}$) obtained by single scattering model. While the $\varrho_{Cexp}^{-1}$ values are comparable to the $\varrho_i^{-1}$ values, the $\varrho_c^{-1}$ values are close to the values of $\varrho_t^{-1}$ rather than $\varrho_i^{-1}$ and $\varrho_{Cexp}^{-1}$ except for the 24 Hz frequency. This results suggest that the assumption of uniform scatterer in the Korean Peninsula is unrealistic.

In this study, we develop and propose damping correction factors for the Korean standard design spectra. The newly proposed Korean standard design spectra has been given only for 5% damping ratio. But in practice, engineers need design spectra for damping values other than 5%. To obtain design spectra for various damping values from the standard spectra, damping correction factors are derived. These factors modify the shape of design spectra in accordance with the damping ratio. Response spectra for various damping values are calculated from the earthquake records that had been used to calculate standard design spectra. They consist of 55 records from 18 earthquakes occurred in overseas intraplate regions and Korea. The regressed spectra for the damping values ranging from 0.5% to 50 % are compared with standard spectra at three regions acceleration, velocity and displacement sensitive regions. The regression analysis of these data rendered formula for damping correction factors. Finally, a single formula for damping correction factors is recommended that is valid for both horizontal and vertical design spectra and that is applicable to the entire range of periods. One thing to note that recommended damping correction factors is valid for the design spectrum of the rock grounds because the design spectra was developed based on the earthquake records of the rock ground.
Least squares ($l^2$ norm) solutions of seismic inversion tend to be very sensitive to data points with large errors. The $l^1$ norm minimization gives more robust solutions, but usually with higher computational cost. Iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) method gives efficient approximate solutions of these $l^1$ norm problems. I propose an efficient implementation of the IRLS method for a hybrid $l^1/l^2$ minimization problem that behaves as $l^2$ norm fit for small residual and $l^1$ norm fit for large residuals. The proposed algorithm shows more robust characteristics to the decision of the threshold value than the l1 norm IRLS inversion does with respect to the threshold value to avoid singularity.
Investigation methods of cut slope are conducted generally only geological surface survey to gain engineering geological data of cut slopes. These methods have many problems such as limitation of investigation for a special area. So geophysical investigations such as geotomography, seismic and electrical resistivity methods have been used to search for failure surface in potential failure slopes or failed slopes. But investigation method using the borehole camera is recently a used method and it is thought that this method is more reliable method than other investigation methods because of being able to see by the eyes. Therefore, this paper was conducted investigations of 4 boleholes and BIPS (Borehole Image Processing System) to search for potential sliding surfaces and was applied to obtain information of discontinuity on failed highway slope. As the results of BIPS, we could decide potential sliding surface in the slope and conducted to check slope stability. And decided slope stability measures.
In Japan, geophysical exploration methods have been widely applied to civil engineering and construction fields for a long time. In particular, seismic refraction has long played a significant role in geotechnical site investigations for tunnels, dams and landslides. However, our growing interest on the social and natural environment makes the methods available and its application fields diversify. Digital technologies such as personal computer have revolutionized our ability to acquire large volumes of data rapidly, and to produce more reliable results for subsurface image. Also, color graphics easily visualizes survey results In a more understandable manner, These days geophysical methods are essential to assessing grouting effects, predicting the front of tunnel cutting face, monitoring the movement, pollution and purification process of groundwater. Now three-dimensional exploration techniques have developed for the site characterization in civil engineering and construction needs.
