The construction of segmental precast concrete bridge is an increase due to its superior performance and economic advantages. This type of bridge is appropriate for spans within 30 to 150 m (100 to 500 ft), known as mega-projects and the design optimization would lead to considerable economic benefits. A box-girder cross section superstructure of balanced cantilever construction method is assessed here. The depth of cross section, (variable along the span linearly), bottom flange thickness, and the count of strands are considered as design variables. The optimum design is characterized by geometry, serviceability, ductility, and ultimate limit states specified by AASHTO. Genetic algorithm (GA) is applied in two fronts: as to the saving in construction cost 8% and as to concrete volume 6%. The sensitivity analysis is run by considering different parameters like span/depth ratio, relation between superstructure cost, span length and concrete compressive strength.
A general step-by-step simulation for the time-dependent analysis of segmentally-erected prestressed concrete box-girder bridges is presented. A three dimensional finite-element model for the balanced-cantilever construction of segmental bridges, including effects of the load history, material nonlinearity, creep, shrinkage, and aging of concrete and the relaxation of prestressing steel was developed using ABAQUS software. The models included three-dimensional shell elements to model the box-girder walls and Rebar elements representing the prestressing tendons. The step-by-step procedure allows simulating the construction stages, effects of time-dependent deformations of materials and changes in the structural system of the bridges. The structural responses during construction and throughout the service life were traced. A comparison of the developed computer simulation with available experimental results was conducted and good agreement was found. Deflection of the bridge deck, changes in stresses and strains and the redistribution of internal forces were calculated for different examples of bridges, built by the balanced-cantilever method, over thirty-year duration. Significant time-dependent effects on the bridge deflections and redistribution of internal forces and stresses were observed. The ultimate load carrying capacities of the bridges and the behavior before collapse were also determined. It was observed that the ultimate load carrying capacity of such bridges decreases with time as a result of time-dependent effects.

The program which could determine cross-sectional dimensions of the box girder bridge at tile stage of preliminary design was developed using the optimal technique in this study. It could minimize the cost and time required in the design of box girder bridges and the construction with the prestressed precast segmental method. Objective cost function consisted of four independent variables such as widths and depth of the cross-section. The Nelder-Mead method was used to solve the nonconstrained nonlinear problem like this.

The flexural behavior tests of UHPC segmental U-girder and composite U-girder which has 160MPa compressive strength and 15.4m length were carried out. The test variables are volume fraction of steel fibers and slab over the U-girder. Each U-girder has longitudinal re-bars in web and lower flange. PS tendons which has 2 of 15.2mm diameter in upper flange and PS tendons which has 7 of 15.2mm diameter in lower flange were arranged and prestressed at onetime in U-girder connection stage. Enough strong prestressing force which applied to U-girder due to ultra high performance concrete strength can withstand the self weight and dead load in U-girder stage. By comparison with the brittle behavior of U-girder, composite U-girder showed the stable and ductile behavior. After the construction of slab over U-girder, flexural load capacity of composite U-girder can bear the design load in final construction stage with only one time prestressing operation which already carried out in U-girder stage. This simple prestressing method due to the ultra high strength concrete have the advantage in construction step and cost. The shear key which has narrow space has the strong composite connection between ultra high strength concrete U-girder and high strength concrete slab didn't show any slip and opening right before failure load.

In recent years, precast prestressed concrete segmental box girder bridges have been increasingly constructed Expansion disphragm segment of this type bridge transfers forces from the superstructure onto bearing or column, and plays an important roll of anchorage zone for longitudinal prestressed forces. Non-linear stresses occur inside of diaphragms by these extensive concentrated forces. In this study, the strut-and-tie models are proposed to design an expansion segment rationally. A formula to determine the effective transverse prestressed forces is proposed on the basis of these models. The present study is expected to provide an effective tool to design expansion segment of prestressed concrete bridges rationally.

In this paper, a limit state model based on the analysis of structural behavior of segmental prestressed concrete box girder bridges and reliability-based safety assessment method are proposed for the bridges erected by free cantilever method. Strength limit state models for prestressed concrete box girder and rigid-frame type columns are developed for a structural safety assessment during construction. Based on the proposed limit state models, the reliability of the bridge is evaluated by using the Advanced First Order Second Moment method. The proposed model and method are applied to the Seo-Hae Grand Bridge built by FCM in order to verify its effectiveness in the safety assessment during construction of the kind of bridges. The sensitivity analyses of the main parameters are also performed in order to identify the important factors that need to be controlled for the safety of the bridges during construction.

The flexural behavior tests of UHPC segmental Box girder which has 160MPa compressive strength and 15.4m length were carried out. The test variables are area of prestressing wires, volume fraction of steel fibers and longitudinal reinforcing bars in upper flange and web. PS tendons which has 32 strands of 15.2mm diameter in lower flange, 24 strands and 14 strands in lower flange were arranged and volume fraction of 2%, 1.5% and 1.0% is used in box girder concrete. UHPFRC box girder which has 32 strands in lower flange showed the over reinforcement and brittle behavior. UHPFRC box girder which has 24 strands showed the similar peak load as 32 strands girder and ductile behavior as large deflection. UHPFRC box girder which has 14 strands showed half of the peak load of 24 strands box girder and ductile behavior. After the application of the formular for the reinforcement index to the behavior of the UHPFRC box girders, reinforcement index does not determine the characteristic of behavior of UHPFRC box girder exactly. So the index should consider the dimension precisely and modify the reference value corresponding to the 0.005 strain of the prestressing strands.

Recently, a large number of box girder bridges with cantilevered decks have been constructed. Especially, segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges are widely used as economic and aesthetic solutions for long span bridges. Segmental erection is a particularly attractive construction alternative in cases where continuously supported formwork is impractical or uneconomical. In segmentally erected bridges, the structural systems are changed as the construction stages are progressive and redistribution of member forces occurs due to time dependent effects of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. Then, in segmentally erected bridges, analysis are required at each construction states. In this study, nonlinear analysis progam of the segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges is developed in taking into account nonlinearity of material and geometry, time dependent effect of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel.

Segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges have been widely used in Korean high speed railway. Segmental erection has been accomplished along the longitudinal direction and across the depth of cross section. The cross section is similar to a composite cross section, composed of old and new segments. Because these segments have different time-dependent creep and shrinkage properties, a stress redistribution takes place during the construction period. It is the main objective in this research to investigate this behavior. An actual bridge was instrumented with 96 vibrating wire embedded type strain gauges, 6 electronic type steel strain gauges, and 75 thermocouples. Two span continuous high speed railway bridge was selected. Two points of importance, such as the midpoint of the first span and the point of interior support, along the span of the girder were chosen to monitor the time dependent behaviors for an extended period of time. The data collection was starting just after concrete girder were cast and is still going on. According to the measured results, the strain distributions across the depth of the section at midspan and interior support were not continuous and the important redistribution of stresses takes place. Thus, rational design of prestressed concrete composite box girder bridges need.
