The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of hollow precast segmental PSC bridge columns. The proposed system can reduce work at a construction site and makes construction periods shorter. Shortened construction times, in turn, lead to important safety and economic advantages when traffic disruption or rerouting is necessary. Two hollow precast segmental PSC bridge columns were tested under a constant axial load and a quasistatic, cyclically reversed horizontal load. A computer program, RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures, was used. The proposed numerical method gives a realistic prediction of performance throughout the loading cycles for several test specimens investigated.
The present study was performed to assess peripheral neural involvement by exposure to hand-arm vibration. Segmental sensory nerve conduction in the median and ulnar nerves were measured in shipyard workers exposed to vibration. The subjects were 47 male adults exposed to hand-arm vibration and 7 healthy male controls. The subjects underwent an extensive bilateral neurophysiological examination. Sensory compound nerve action potential (SNAP) of the median and ulnar nerves in palm-finger and wrist-palm segments were measured by antidromic method. And SNAP of the median and ulnar nerves in wrist-proximal finger and wrist-distal finger segments were measured by orthodromic method. Result of sensory nerve conduction study was abnormal in 31 patients $(66\%)$ and normal in 16 patients $(34\%)$ of subjects. The pathological pattern in the hand-arm vibration exposed group was 13 patients $(28\%)$ of carpal tunnel syndrome, 18 patients $(38\%)$ of distal sensory neuropathy, 7 patients $(15\%)$ of multifocal and 1 patient $(2\%)$ of Guyon syndrome. The present study indicates that vibration-induced nerve impairments exist both in the finger-palm and palm-wrist segment of median and ulnar sensory nerves. The results suggest that segmental sensory nerve conduction study would be useful as objective indication of peripheral nerve impairment induced by the hand-arm vibration.
The dynamic mechanical thermal properties of poly(hexamethylene terephthalate) (PHT), poly(1,4-cyclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) (PCT) and their P(HT-co-CT) random copolymers in the amorphous state were examined as a function of temperature and frequency. All the samples exhibited two main relaxation processes in the plot of tan ${\delta}$ versus temperature: the primary ${\alpha}$-relaxation associated with the glass transition and the secondary ${\beta}$-relaxation attributed to the local segmental motions of mostly cyclohexylene rings for PCT and to cooperative motions of methylene, carboxyl, and phenylene groups for PHT. Both ${\alpha}$- and ${\beta}$-relaxation temperatures increased with increasing CT content. The activation energy of the ${\alpha}$-relaxation increased with increasing CT content, whereas that of the ${\beta}$-relaxation decreased. The sub-glassy secondary ${\beta}$-relaxation processes of PCT and PHT were investigated in terms of the cooperativity of main-chain segmental motions.
Segmental zoster paresis is characterized by focal, asymmetric motor weakness in the myotome corresponding to the dermatome of the rash. A 73-year-old man, who presented with severe right shoulder pain and shoulder girdle muscle weakness, was diagnosed with segmental zoster paresis involvement of the C5-C6 motor roots as a complication of herpes zoster. Girdle muscles (supraspinatus, deltoid and infraspinatus) atrophy had developed in his right shoulder. An MRI showed rotator cuff tearing in his right shoulder; therefore, an arthroscopic rotator cuff repair was performed. Herein, this case is presented to emphasize the importance of considering post-herpetic segmental motor paresis in the differential diagnosis of acute painful motor weakness of the upper extremities.

Dupuytren's contracture is a condition commonly encountered by hand surgeons, although it is rare in the Asian population. Various surgical procedures for Dupuytren's contracture have been reported, and the outcomes vary according to the treatment modalities. We report the treatment results of segmental fasciectomies with multiple transverse incisions for patients with Dupuytren's contracture. The cases of seven patients who underwent multiple segmental fasciectomies with multiple transverse incisions for Dupuytren's contracture from 2006 to 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. Multiple transverse incisions to the severe contracture sites were performed initially, and additional incisions to the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joints, and the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints were performed if necessary. Segmental fasciectomies by removing the fibromatous nodules or cords between the incision lines were performed and the wound margins were approximated. The mean range of motion of the involved MCP joints and PIP joints was fully recovered. During the follow-up periods, there was no evidence of recurrence or progression of disease. Multiple transverse incisions for Dupuytren's contracture are technically challenging, and require a high skill level of hand surgeons. However, we achieved excellent correction of contractures with no associated complications. Therefore, segmental fasciectomies with multiple transverse incisions can be a good treatment option for Dupuytren's contracture.
In this paper, we propose the reduction method of the number of parameters in the segmental-feature HMM using trend quantization method. The proposed method shares the trend information of the polynomial trajectories by quantization. The trajectory is obtained by the sequence of feature vectors of speech signals and can be divided by trend and location information. The trend indicates the variation of consequent frame features, while the location points to the positional difference of the trajectories. Since the trend occupies the large portion of SFHMM, if the trend is shared, the number of parameters maybe decreases. To exploit the proposed system the experiments are performed on TIMIT corpus. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed system is roughly similar to that of previous system. Therefore, the proposed system can be considered one of parameter reduction method.
This paper investigates the acoustic-perceptual relation between Korean dent-alveolar fricatives and the English voiceless alveolar fricative /s/ in varied prosodic contexts (e.g., stress, accent, and word initial position). The denti-alveolar fricatives in Korean show a two-way distinction, which can be referred to as either plain (lenis) /s/ or fortis /$s^*$/. The English alveolar voiceless fricative /s/ that corresponds to the two Korean fricatives would be placed in a one-to-two non-native phoneme mapping situation when Korean listeners hear English /s/. This raises an interesting question of how the single fricative of English perceptually maps into the two-way distinction in Korean. This paper reports the acoustic-perceptual mapping pattern by investigating spectral properties of the English stimuli that are heard as either /s/ or /$s^*$/ by Korean listeners, in order to answer the two questions: first, how prosody influences fricatives acoustically, and second, how the resultant properties drive non-native listeners to interpret them as segmental features instead of as prosodic information. The results indicate that Korean listeners' responses change depending on the prosodic context in which the stimuli are placed. It implies that Korean speakers interpret some of the information provided by prosody as segmental one, and that the listeners take advantage of the information in their judgment of non-native phonemes.

In spite of the increasing construction of segmental PSC box girder bridges, the techniques associated with real-time monitoring, construction control and safety assessment during construction have been less developed compared with the construction techniques. Thus, the development of an integrated system including real-time measurement and monitoring, control and safety assessment system during construction is necessary fur more safe and precise construction of the bridges. This study presents a prototype integrated monitoring system for preventing abnormal behavior and accidents under construction stages, that consist of behavior control system for precise construction, reliability-based safety assessment system, and structural analysis. Also, a prototype software system is developed on the basis of the proposed model. It is successfully applied to the Sea-Hae Grand Bridge built by FCM. The integrated system model and software system can be utilized for the safe and precise construction of segmental PSC bridges during construction.
Objective: Studies confirming the lumber spine kinematics of direct or indirect segmental mobility under the application of joint mobilization, which induces passive force on the spine, are insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to obtain the underlying clinical data by identifying direct or indirect segmental mobility produced by Maitland's PA mobilization technique. Design: Randomized controlled trial design. Methods: Thirty subjects with no back pain participated in this study. X-ray testing equipment (SIG-40-525, Ecoray Inc., Korea) was used to verify the segmented movement of their lumbar. Joint mobilization was performed by physiotherapists with more than 10 years of experience in prescription therapy, and radiography was performed once without PA joint mobilization and once without the mobilization for comparing the lumbar vertebrae before and after the mobilization. The radiographs taken were analyzed using the picture archiving and communication system (PACS) program to measure the spinal displacement, intervertebral height, intervertebral angle, and lumbar lordosis angle. Results: Significant differences were observed in the lumbar displacement, intervertebral angle, and lumbar lordosis angle in all lumbar vertebrae before and after the mobilization. The intervertebral height indicated significant differences in all ventral vertebrae and only in L3-L4 and L4-L5 in dorsal vertebrae. Conclusions: This study suggests that the segmental mobility produced through indirect approaches plays an important role in inducing therapeutic effects in patients with back pain.

Our objective is to evaluate the applicability of segmental phase angle (PhA) via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) for post-stroke complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). Due to its noninvasiveness and convenience, various studies have used BIA in clinical conditions. We measured segmental PhA in 4 patients at the time of CRPS diagnosis and repeated 4 weeks after 2 weeks of steroid pulse therapy. In 3 cases, the affected-to-unaffected ratio of the upper limb PhA decreased at the time of diagnosis. In 2 cases with improvement of more than 5 points in the CRPS severity score (CSS), increased ratios were observed. In other 2 cases with improvement of less than 4 points in the CSS, no remarkable changes in the ratios were found. We suggest that the segmental PhA can be helpful in assessment of post-stroke CRPS and its recovery.
