To determine the optimum sowing date and nursery period in Alisma piantago in the southern area of Korea, Alisma plantago local cultivar was grown under three different sowing dates and nursery periods. The plant height, leaf width and leaf length at the area sown on the seedbed in June 30 and conducted the growing seedling in 30 days is 12.1cm, 2.5cm and 3.1cm respectively and it shows tess decrease than that of plant height, leaf width and leaf length with 12.3cm, 2.6cm and 3.2cm respectively which was sown on the seedbed in June 20 and carried out the growing seedling in 30 days, and it also shows less decrease than that of plant height, leaf width and leaf length with 15.2cm, 3.1cm and 5.2cm respectively at the area sown on the seedbed in July 10 and condected the growing seedling in the same date. The stem length, number of stems and diameter of root at the area sown on the seedbed in June 30 and conducted the growing seedling in 30 days is 31cm, 11 and 3.7cm respectively and it shows more increase than that of stem length, number of stem and diameter of and on the other hand shows tess decrease than that of stem length, number of stems and diameter of root with 30cm, 10cm, 35cm respectively which was sown on the seedbed in 30 days, and on the other hand shows less decrease than that of stem length, number of stems and diameter of root with 32cm,13cm,3.9cm respectively at the area sown on the seedbed in July 10 and conducted the growing seedling in the same date, The fresh yield of roots at the area sown on the seedbed in June 30 and conducted the growing seedling in 30 days is 431.4Kg/10a and it shows more increase of 26.9Kg than that of fresh yield of root with 410.59g110a which was sown on the seedbed in lune 20an4 carried out the growing seedling in 30 days, and it also shows more increase of 7Kg than that of fresh yield of root with 430.4Kg/10a at the area sown on the seedbed in July 10 and conducted the growing seedling in the same date. The dry yield of roots at the area on the seedbed in June 30 and conducted the growing seedling in 30 days is 351.9Kg110a which was sown on the seedbed in June 20 and carried out the growing seedling in 30 days, and it also shows more increase of 16.4Kg than that of dry yield of root with 335.4Kg110a at the area sown on the seedbed in July 10 and conducted the growing seedling in the same date. Therefore, the seedling period of proper seedbed for high yield bumper crop of Alisma plantago for exporting to Japan is June 30 and the number of days for seedling is 30 days.
The objective of this study was to examine the effect of root pruning intensity in combination with different initial seedling size on the growth of transplanting seedlings of Quercus acutissima. One-year-old seedlings were divided into three groups depending on their height, i.e. small (< 15 cm), medium (25-35 cm) and large size (35 cm <). Root of seedlings was pruned by three intensity such as, leaving 5 cm (severe), 10 cm (medium) and 15 cm (light) of taproot from the root-collar. After one year, we investigated survival rate, height and root-collar diameter (RCD) increment and final shoot dry weight. Also we measured characteristics of newly developed lateral roots such as number, total length, dry weight and diameter. Severe root pruning showed the lowest survival rate in all seedling size. Height increment, RCD increment and shoot dry weight were decreased with increasing intensity of root pruning. Seedlings of medium and light root pruning showed similar above-ground growth and dry weight of lateral roots. More large seedlings showed good survival rate, height increment and final shoot dry mass in all root pruning intensity. Therefore, one-year-old seedlings of Q. acutissima should be pruned taproot by 10 cm and transplanted to obtain excellent performance and increase the efficiency of transplanting work. Based on the findings of this study, it is important that applying to different root pruning intensity depending on initial seedling size for producing 2-year-old seedlings with excellent growth and high quality.

The composition of artificial soil in a containerized seedling production plays an important role in seedling quality as well as environmental issues. We investigated the effects of different types of biomaterials and mixed ratio with artificial soil on the growth of Fraxinus rhynchophylla seedlings. Soil medium was supplemented with 3 levels (0%, 10%, 20%) of pine bark, mushroom sawdust and rice husk. Root collar diameter (RCD), height growth, and biomass have significantly increased when rice husk was applied. Compared with the control, RCD and height growth showed highest in 20% rice husk treatment with an increase of 5.7% and 17.6%, respectively. In contrast, the treatments of pine bark and mushroom sawdust showed lower results in growth parameters (RCD, height growth, and total biomass) than control. Seedling quality index was also highest at the 20% rice husk treatment, but there was not statistically different among treatments. Our results suggested rice husk can be substituted up to 20% of substrates for containerized F. rhynchophylla seedling production system.
This study was conducted to investigate effects of fertilization treatments (non-fertilizing, deep-fertilizing 20g, 50g, 100g, and surface-fertilizing 20g) on survival rate, growth performances, and seedling quality index (SQI) of container seedling and bare root seedling of Pinus densiflora in the field. There were no significantly differences in survival rate among fertilization treatments in the field. Besides, there was no toxic effect on seedling by over 100g fertilization in deep-fertilizing treatment. The root collar diameter and height of P. densiflora in both seedling types were the highest at 100g fertilization in deep-fertilizing treatments, and the biomass products and SQI were the same as above growth of root collar diameter and height. In most of the treatments, container seedlings showed better growth performances than bare root seedlings. In optimal fertilization, effect of fertilization was higher in container seedling than bare root seedling.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of light intensity on the growth and biomass production of Pinus thunbergii seedlings. The experiment was performed under five different light intensities such as 100, 50, 30, 10, and 25 of the natural full sun light intensity for 2 year in the field condition. The seedling showed the highest height and root collar diameter growth under natural full sun light. The height growth of the seedling under 50% of light intensity showed 96.4% of the control seedling in the first year, and 88.9% in the second year, and the root collar diameter growth showed 94.1% in the first year 77.6% in the second year. Height and root collar diameter growth was markedly reduced below 30% of relative light intensity, and the reduction rate of root collar diameter growth was higher than that of height growth. All the tested seedlings died under 2% of relative light intensity in the second year. Biomass production was also reduced by decreasing of relative light intensity, the reduction rate of root biomass production in both first and second years was higher than that of leaf or shoot biomass production. The lowest reduction was observed at the shoot in the first year, and at the leaves in the second year The highest T/R ratio was recorded by 3.55 in the seedling under 50% of relative light intesity in the first year, and by 4.88 under 10% of relative light intensity in the second year.
This study was conducted to determine the optimum intensity of root pruning and the initial seedling size of 1-year-old Quercus serrata for producing 2-year-old healthy seedlings. Large( > 26 cm hight) and small size ( < 24 cm hight) seedlings were pruned their root by the length of 5, 10, and 15cm and then transplanted on nursery. Stem height, root-collar diameter(RCD), height to RCD ratio(H/D ratio), shoot dry weight(DW) and root development were measured during first growing season after transplanting. Seedling size and pruning intensity influenced on shoot growth such as height, RCD, H/D ratio and DW after transplanting. In addition, the development of lateral roots such as number, length, DW and diameter were affected by the seedling size. Taproot pruned by 15cm was shown excellent above-ground growth in large seedling group, but pruned by 10 and 15cm showed respectively better shoot growth in small seedling group. Large seedlings increased their above-ground growth, taproot regrowth, and number of lateral roots more than those of the small seedlings. But the length and DW of lateral roots were increased in the small seedlings. In conclusion, in order to produce high quality 2-year-old seedlings, it is important to produce large size of Q. serrata seedlings. Also root pruning length of 1-year-old Q. serrata was reasonable on 15 cm in taller than 26 cm or 10cm in less than the height.
This study was carried to investigate effects of optimum supply strengths of 'Sonneveld' nutrient solution on growth characteristics in container seedling of trees (Pinus densiflora, Torreya nucifera, Quercus acutissina and Fraxinus mandshurica) using developed media with used-rockwool. Flesh weight, height and trunk diameter in container seedling of Torreya nucifera were better in high strengths. In container seed ling of Torreya nucifera, flesh weight more increased in 1.5 and 3.0 strengths and hight and trunk diameter more increased in 1.5 strength than the rest. Flesh weight in container seedling of Quercus acutissina was heaviest in 2.0 strength and was lightest in 1.0 strength. Height and dry weight in 2.0 and 3.0 strengths and trunk diameter and total chlorophyll in 2.0 strength were better than in the rest. Besides photosynthesis rate was more high in 1.5 and 2.0 strengths than in the rest. In container seedling of Fraxinus mandshurica, flesh weight, height and trunk diameter more increased in 0.5 strength and total chlorophyll and photosynthesis rate were good in 0.5 and 2.0 strengths. Most growth characteristics were poor in 3.0 strength.

This study was conducted by estimate of leaf characteristics and growth performance among selected 20 families progenies of Hovenia dulcis var. koreana Nakai. Mean seedling height and root-collar diameter in whole progenies showed 61.6cm, 6.98mm, respectively. Mean seedling height of KW 2-5 family was 79.3cm and it was higher than that of other families. JN 2-2 family had highest value, 9.16mm, in mean of root-collar diameter. Growth performances of KW 2-5 and JN 2-2 families showed 57% (in seedling height), 53% (in root-collar diameter) superior to those of lowest marked families. The selection level based on growth performances, which are seedling height over 75.0cm and root-collar diameter over 8.0mm, were applied on whole families, and two families selected (KW 2-5, JN 2-2). The selection effects from selected families was evaluated as 125% compared to the mean of whole families. The coefficient of variation (C.V) appeared wide range, $9.4{\sim}42.4%$, in estimated leaf characteristics. Particularly, C.V of petiole length (PL) and petiole diameter (PD) showed 42.4% and 28.7%, respectively. Their were higher value than other leaf characteristics. Analysis of variance for all leaf characteristics were significantly different among families. Also, there had positive correlation between most leaf characteristics except the correlation between leaf length (LL) and leaf morphological index (LMI, LW/LL). Particularly, the correlation between leaf length and leaf width (LW) showed the highest correlation.

Reforestation is one of the most important ways to reduce erosion soil. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of jellyfish soil amendment on seedling growth for reforestation. 100g jellyfish soil amendment was applied into planting hole for the purpose of improvement of the Chamaecyparis obtusa seedling growth. Results showed that during growing period, mortality were 4.4% for the fertilized group and 8.3% for control group. The seedling average height and root diameter were 95.0 cm and 1.07 cm in fertilized group and 40.6 cm and 0.74 cm in control group. The fertilized group was found to be superior (by 1 to 5%) to control group in terms of mortality rate, seedlings height, and root diameter. The positive growth of the fertilized group can be due the increase in soil moisture and the higher availability of nutrients to the plants from jellyfish fertilizer.
This study was carried out to investigate the growth responses of Pinus densiflora seedlings to enhanced UV-B environment for 16 weeks in the field condition. The seedlings were treated with one of three levels of UV-B dosages - ambient UV-B, ambient + 3.2, and ambient + 5.2 KJ m$^{-2}$day$^{-1}$ and the irradiation was performed at the stage before the germination, the fully expanded cotyledon, and the primary needles grown more than 0.8cm in length of the seedlings, respectively. Enhanced UV-B irradiation reduced the height and the root collar diameter growth, and dry mass production of the seedling, and T/R ratio was increased by the UV-B treatment. Difference in seedling growth was observed by difference in time of the UV-B treatment. Among the seedlings which were treated with ambient - 3.2 KJ m$^{-2}$day$^{-1}$, height and root collar diameter growth was relatively high in the seedling received the UV-B treatment at the stage before the germination. The lowest dry mass production was observed in the seedlings received the UV-B at stage of cotyledon both in two levels of enhanced UV-B treatment. Chlorophyll concentration was reduced by enhanced UV-B irradiation, and chlorophyll a/b ratio was increased by the UV-B treatment.
