This experiment was carried out to study the optimal chilling period for breaking the physiological dormancy of dehisced E. senticosus seeds and to investigate the critical seeding date in Kangwondo. Storage at $5^{\circ}C$ for 85 days was most effective in breaking dormancy of dehisced seeds, but didn't germinated synchronously. Only 28.1% of undehisced seeds germinated after 125 days of low temperature storage. For improving seedling survival rate in the field, 50% shading was more effective than 30% shading. Delayed seeding date resulted in decreased seedling fresh weight, dry weight, leaf area and root length, but seeding date has no significant affecte on stem length.
This study was carried out to identify the optimum seeding dates for selecting a double-cropping system and to assess the effect of polyethylene film mulching on the yield of Proso millet. Seeds of the varieties Hwanggeumgijang and Ibaegchal were sown in Miryang on five different dates: 1st (May 25), 2nd (June 15), 3rd (June 25), 4th (July 5), and 5th (July 15), with and without polyvinyl mulching. The varieties have different characteristics, for example, Hwanggeumgijang is an early-maturing type and more sensitive to temperature, whereas Ibaegchal is a medium-maturing type and more sensitive to the duration for which it is exposed to sunlight. Late-sown Hwanggeumgijang had a short heading date from seeding and required a low accumulated temperature. It also had a shorter period of heading, a shorter culm length and a shorter diameter of stem. In contrast, it had had a higher number of ears $per\;m^2$ although similar ear length and similar 1000-grain weight. The yield potential of Hwanggeumgijang was found to decrease at a late seeding date. In particular, it significantly decreased at the seeding date of July 15. In the case of cultivation with polyvinyl mulching, the period of heading was shorter by 2-4 days and the yield potential was increased by approximately 12-32%. The length and diameter of culm in Ibaegchal were slowly decreased, but the length of ear, the 1000-grain weight and the yield potential were similar for all seeding dates (except July 15) and cultivation with and without mulching. When sown late, the length and diameter of the culm of Ibaegchal very rapidly decreased by the July 15 seeding date. The protein content of Ibaegchal was higher but the amlyose content of Ibaechal was lower compared to Hwanggeumgijang. At late seeding dates, the protein contents of the two varieties increased but the amylose contents were similar.

Cell adhesion to any material surface is considered to be fundamental and important phenomenon in the fields of tissue engineering. Cell adhesion molecules, mechanism, and attachment force have been studied and described a lot. However, the effects of mechanical stimuli on the adhesive forces still have been left much to be investigated. In this study, to investigate the changes in cell adhesive force due to resting time period during the intermittent hydrostatic pressurizing (IHP), cells were cultured under the IHP with various resting times. Then the cell adhesive forces were measured quantitatively utilizing a cell detachment test system and immunofluorescent staining was performed using fluorescent microscopy. In the results, immediately after mechanical stimuli (150 minutes after seeding) and one hour later (210 minutes after seeding), the average adhesive force of experimental group 5 (resting time: 15min) compared with that of control group at same culture time was increased significantly (p<0.05). The results indicated that IHP can contribute in improving cell adhesive force and some of time intervals were required for the expression of cell response.
In pot experiment, relations between soybean cyst nematode, Heterodera glycines, and growth and yield of soybean were followed. Soybean growth and nodule development in plots which inoculated more than 16 cysts were reduced greatly from two month after inoculation. Tolerance limit was about 20 cysts per 500g of soil at seeding period. There was $60\%$ loss of grain yield 낀hen nematode population was 1 cyst/g of soil at seeding period. Reproduction of soybean cyst :nematode was good when initial population had been low. So, the final population was no difference depend on inoculation density.
Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the competitive characteristics of weeds with direct-seeded rice. In both dry- and water-seeded rice a weeds) started to grow over the plant height of rice from 45 days after seeding, and there was a great difference in plant height between rice and weeds from 75 days after seeding. Dry weights of weeds drastically increased from 30 days after seeding in both dry- and water-seeded rice, and the increase of dry weight was faster in dry-seeded rice than in water-seeded rice with time. Although weeds competed with rice at earlier growth stages, they did not reduce rice yields and its components until competition period of 75 days after seeding. Required period of weed free at the beginning of the season was 30 to 45 days from seeding in order to avoid any yield loss. The numbers of panicle per plant, spikelets per panicle, grain weight and yield of rice in dry-seeded rice had highly negative correlations with the growth ratios of Echinochloa crus-galli, Ludwigia prostrata, Cyperus difformis, Bidens frondosa, and Cyperus serotinus. In water-seeded rice, the number of plants, panicle per plant, spikelets per panicle and yield had highly negative correlations with growth rate of Echinochloa crus-galli, but the percentage of filled spikelet had negative correlation with Cyperus difformis. Research indicated that in direct-seeded rice weed competition with rice started from 30 days after seeding and significant yield loss by weed competition occurred from 75 days after seeding.
Very recently, the cultural pattern of paddy rice in Korea was transitted in a short period, and resulted as earlier in season and more in fertillizer application among others. Specially the weed emergence in paddy fields was drastically increased as affected by change of cultural pattern into early planting and into direct seeding methods. Of course, the direct-seeding in row seeding induced more weeds than in broad-cast direct -seeding. By maintaining the water level with saturation of the paddy surface induced more weeds, relatively more annual weeds than by deep in water level, respectively. Relatively more annuals in number of species and in emerged quantity comparing with perennials was caused by the shifting of cultural methods from transplanting to direct seeding. The severe weed competition damages were mainly resulted due to the shading by taller plant heights of weeds than crop during the whole growing seasons. Conclusively, accepting of direct seeding methods in paddy rice culture in Korea, the present bases for weed control methods ought to be naturally and effectively improved to meet the newly made weed problems.
The feasibility of cloud seeding in Korea is presented from analyses of precipitation, cloud amount, satellite data, and upper air data. The daily mean precipitation over Dae-Kwan-Ryong is the largest(~4.5 mm/day), while the intensity of precipitation (amount of yearly rainfall divided by the frequency of rain days) over Southern area is above 14 mm/day, which shows the largest in Korea. Both the daily mean and the intensity of precipitation over Andong area are the smallest with values of ~2.7 mm/day and ~11 mm/day, respectively. In the meanwhile, the occurrence frequency of appropriate cloud top temperature (-10'~-30') for cloud seeding over the region has a large value (~130 days/year). The precipitation patterns of the region vary with wind direction and intensity calculated from 43 AWSs(Automatic Weather Station) and the additional 7 rain guages which were installed along Northern and Southern part of the Sobaek mountain. The Sc(Stratocumulus) cloud type over Andong is frequently observed, and Cirrus and Altostratus next. From the results, it is estimated that the feasibility of cloud seeding over the area would be high if a proper strategy of cloud seeding is set up. LCL (Lifting Condensation Level) and CCL (Convective Condensation Level) have the most frequency in 1000-950 hPa being occupied 4/9 of total analysis period and in 400-500 hPa, respectively, with both small variations from season to season. The correlation between vapor mixing ratio and CCL is the highest in Summer and the lowest in Winter. It means that the height of cumulus in Summer is high with an abundant water vapor but vice versa in Winter, and that the strategy of cloud seeding should be different with seasons.
A number of field surveys have been performed in larch (Larix leptolepsis) forest floor in which any seeding of this species never find ther. In laboratory work, aqueous extracts from leaves, roots and stems of larch were provided and used to bioassay. Among them, germination and seedling growth of selected species were the most inhibitory in leaves extracts. Though germiation percentage of a species showed high compared with control, its dry weight after a given period grown were clearly low. The results due to be considered by allelopathic effect. And syringic acid and p-hydroxybenzoic acid were identified by HPLC from larch leaves. It is assumed that these phenolic acids affect on other species as allelochemicals of larch.
The back-filled soil of the New Incheon International Airport construction site was reclaimed with sea sand in near the Young-Jong island. The primary study was carried out from August 1993 to June 1997 to study soil amendment and to select salt resistance turfgrass species. This study dealt with low maintenance area that included most part of open space of airport site. The second experiment, from October 1996 to August 1998, focused on soil amendment and selection of turfgrass species for alongside runway where turf area was maintained. Through two previous studies, propagation methods with zoysiagrass were tested for alongside runway and surrounding areas at 1998. The study of construction methods with zoysiagrass, vegetative propagation showed better results on visual quality and cover rating compare with seeding propagation. However, significant different between vegetative and seeding propagation was not showed on visual quality and drought tolerance after one year of plot establishment. The cover rating by seeding construction methods reached in excess of 70% of limitation suggested by the Incheon International Airport Cooperation. Zoysia net and sprigging net methods were the most suitable where there requires rapid and high rate of ground cover. Seeding propagation should be acceptable to obtain a resonable cover rating where there allows relatively longer period of completion. Therefore, it should be possible to attain a proper rating of ground cover on the site of open space, alongside runway or areas similar to the New Incheon International Airport which is being built on dredged seashore sand. However, the methods of soil amendment, selecting salt tolerance species, and proper construction procedure should be considered at the a time.
One of most laborious work in rice farming is transplanting of rice seedling which has been required preparation of nursury bed and care of seedling during one month period. In this research, direct seeding in dry paddy(DS) was practiced to compare with traditional tansplanting(TP) in Suwon and Milyang. Growth stages in DS were delayed as its planting time was about 36 days later than TP. Heading stage of DS at Suwon was delayed about 15 days as compared to transplanting culture. Rice yield in DS was decreased 8.2%(Suwon) and 0.11%(Milyang), repectively. Working-hour saving in DS was about 34.0%(Suwon) and 54.0%(Milyang). Production cost of DS was decreased 19%(Suwon) and 29% (Milyang), repectively. Amount of rice production per a unit working-hour in DS could incresed 37%(Suwon) and 113%(Milyang) compared to that of TP, respectively. Therefore, DS was decreased little in rice yield, but it could save working hour and production cost, significantly. Warm region like Milyang had more advantage in DS than Suwon. But, DS needs varietal selection for better emergence in low temperature, and more research in weed control and water management.
