In order to analyze the life cycle of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior dormancy and some environmental factors inducing germination of the seeds were examined. The results were as follows : Dormancy of fertile seeds was broken in part within a month after seed collection in case of adequate moisture and alternating temperature was also effective in breaking dormancy. The temperature range, which allow germination was $12^{\circ}C{\sim}32^{\circ}C$. Optimum temperature for germination was $24^{\circ}C$. The seed of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior was light-independent. The difference of storage period appeared to have no particular effect on the viability of seeds at any time during the 9-month storage period. In the increasing temperature(IT) regime, A. artemisiifolia var. elatior seeds started to germinate at $16^{\circ}C$, showing the higher temperature the greater germination rate : the final germination percentage was 99.34%. On the other hand, in the decresing temperature(DT) regime, seeds began to germinate at $20^{\circ}C$ with the 1.34% germination. An induced dormancy occurred at $12^{\circ}C$ making the 5.34% final germination in the DT regime. Low temperature was more effective to break dormancy than higher temperature. Seeds of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior seems to be germinated in mid to late autumn or germination delayed until following spring. The above results suggest these variation of germination response in diverse environmental factors seems to be a physiological strategy to maintain their existence and to reproduce in the extreme thermal variation.
Due to its topographic complexities and various climatical condition, Korea exhibits diverse forest types. Dominant tree species in this zone are Quercus spp., Betula spp., Zelkova spp., Fraxinus spp., Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, and Pinus thunbergii ete. Genetic conservation in forest species in Korea there are three ways ; one is in situ, other is ex situ and third is in-facility conservation. In situ conservation include that are the present status of conservation of rare and endangered flora and ecosystem, the reserved forest, the national and provincial park, and the gene pool of natural forests. Ex situ conservation means to be established the new forest from in situ forest stands, progeny and provenance test populations, seed orchard and clone banks, and gene conservation in-facility. As a tool for low temperature storage, several aspects on in vitro system were studied ; (1) establishment of in vitro cultures from juvenile and/or rejuvenated tissues, (2) induction of multiple shoots from the individual micropropagules, (3) elongation of the proliferated shoots. Studies on cold storage for short-and long-term maintenance of in vitro cultures under $4^{\circ}C$ in the refrigerator were conducted. For the cryopreservation at $-196^{\circ}C$, various factors affecting survivability of the plant materials are being examined. The necessity of gene conservation of forest trees is enlarged not only to increase the adaptability for various environments but also to gain the breeding materials in the future. For effective gene conservation of forest trees, I would like to suggest followings ; 1. Forest stands reserved for other than the gene conservation purposes such as national parks should be investigated by botanical and gene-ecological studies for selecting bio-diversity and gene conservation stands. 2. Reserved forest for gene pool should be extented both economically important tree spp. and non-economical species. 3. Reserved forest for progeny test and clone bank should be systematically investigated for the use of Ex situ forest gene conservation. 4. We have to find out a new methodology of genetic analysis determining the proper and effective size of subpopulation for in situ gene conservation. 5. We should develop a new tree breeding systems for successful gene conservation and utilization of the genetic resources. 6. New method of in-facility gene conservation using advanced genetic engineering should be developed to save time and economic resources. 7. For the conservation of species with short-life span of seed or shortage of knowledge of seed physiology, tissue culture techniques will be played a great role for gene conservation of those species. 8. It is are very useful conservation not only of genes but of genotypes which were selected already by breeding program. 9. Institutional and administrative arrangements including legistlation must be necessarily taken for gene conservation of forest trees. 10. It is national problems for conservation of forest resources which have been rapidly destroyed because of degenerating environmental condition and of inexperienced management system of bio-diversity and gene conservation. 11. In order to international cooperation for exchanging data of bio-diversity and gene conservation, we should connect to international net works as soon as possible.

Electron spin resonance (ESR) and hydrocarbon characteristics were analyzed to establish identification conditions for irradiated dried red pepper. The ESR spectroscopy for 4 different parts (powder, pericarp, seed, stem) of the samples showed that irradiated samples signaled (g=2.024, 2.006, 1.987) a pair of peaks from a cellulose radical at intervals of 6 mT, which were not found on the non-irradiated samples. The ESR signals increased in directly proportion to the irradiation doses, which were still detectable after 12 weeks of storage at room temperature. The GC-MS analysis of hydrocarbons after fat extraction and separation by florisil column chromatography revealed that hydrocarbons, such as 1-tetradecene (14:1), 1,7,10-hexadecatriene (16:3), 1,7-hexadecadiene (16:2), 1-hexadecene (16:1), 6,9-heptadecadiene (17:2), and 8-heptadecene (17:1), were detected only from the irradiated samples immediately after irradiation and 8 months of storage. They linearly increased with the dose of irradiation, suggesting them as radiation-induced markers for irradiated dried red pepper.

This study was conducted to investigate the effect of onion cultivation under paddy and upland condition on the yield and storage of onion bulbs. In comparison of soil conditions, nitrogen, phosphate, potassium content and average temperature in upland condition were higher than those of paddy condition, but calcium, magnesium, sodium and water content in paddy condition were higher than those of upland condition. The growth of aerial part was better in upland cultivated condition. It showed that bulb formation in paddy cultivated condition was faster during in early growth stage, but was slower during in late growth stage. Average bulb size and weight were higher in upland cultivated condition, but dry weight per 100 g fresh weight and bulb hardness were higher in paddy cultivated condition. Sugar contents, inorganic compounds, nitrogen, phosphate and potassium content of onion were higher in upland cultivated condition, but calcium, magnesium and sodium content of onion were higher in paddy cultivated condition. In distribution of onion bulb size, most of large sized onions were produced in upland cultivated condition. Average bulb production for seed harvesting were $63{\sim}70%$ higher in paddy cultivated condition than that of upland cultivated condition. The rotted rate of onion was about $27.2{\sim}34.6%$ in paddy, $37.5{\sim}51.4%$ in upland cultivated condition respectively, showed favorable result as the difference of $8.7{\sim}24.2%$ in paddy cultivated condition.

In order to help the preservation of the cherry tomatoes, antimicrobial paper incorporating grapefruit seed extract and zeolite was applied to packaging fruits. The fruits were packed with a paper bag of 15.5${\times}$24 cm and then stored at 1$0^{\circ}C$. During the storage, weight loss, pH, total acidity, soluble solid content, microbial load and decay were measured as quality indices. Steady weight loss due to the transpiration was observed to slightly increase the solid content during the storage with little difference between the packaging treatments. There were little change in pH and acidity of the stored fruits. The microbial loads of total aerobic bacteria, and yeast/mold counts were significantly suppressed during 10 day storage by the antimicrobial paper packaging, which also contributed to reducing the decayed fruits observed after 15 days.
The variations of asparagine and aspartic acid contents among the soybean varieties and in the different parts of soybean sprout after the different durations of storage were investigated. Asparagine and aspartic acid are known to have the detoxifying effects on acetaldehyde, which is highly toxic metabolites in the process of alcohol metabolism in the human body. The contents of asparagine and aspartic acid of beansprout showed continuosuly increasing trends along with the days to cultivation with a great varietal difference, especially in the roots. The duration of seed storage did not affect contents of asparagine content; the longer storage decreased aspartic acid content remarkably.
To know the ecological pattern of bulrush (Scirpus juncoides) seeds in dormancy-breaking responses as affected by different ripening processes, storage conditions, germination conditions, and some of known chemicals concerned, the study was conducted. Among other conditions detected, the burial in 2 cm depth paddy soil, $5^{\circ}C$ storage temperature, pre-maturing process (Green color), high concentration of chemicals used, and flooding paddy surfaces were the most efficient conditions for bulrush seeds to break dormancy and germinate, respectively.
This work was conducted to obtain some information about stable production of high quality seed-tubers in the late season cultivation of virus-free sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.]. Growth characteristics and storage root yield between virus-free and farmer's slips in 9 cultivars were investigated using black-film vinyl mulching cultivation with $75{\times}25cm$ planting density on July 10. At 30 days after planting, vine length, vine diameter, number of node, and number of branch in virus-free slips were significantly increased than those in farmer's slips. The vine growth was significantly different among cultivars, and vine elongation was excellent in 'Kogeonmi', 'Shincheonmi', 'Shinhwangmi', 'Shinyulmi', and 'Yeonhwangmi' compared to the other cultivars. At 110 days after planting, vine length, vine diameter, number of node, number of branch, and fresh weight were significantly different among cultivars, but no significant differences between virus-free and farmer's slips were seen except number of node. Total yield in virus-free slips was increased by 12-49% among cultivars than that in farmer's slips. The mean yields between virus-free and farmer's slips were 1,625 kg/10a and 1,230 kg/10a, respectively, and it was significantly different between virus-free and farmer's slips. Percentage of marketable storage root in virus-free slips was 65.6%, and it was significantly higher than 57.8% in farmer's slips. Marketable yields ($40g{\leq}$) between virus-free and farmer's slips were 1,067 kg/10a and 710 kg/10a, respectively. Marketable yield in 'Shincheonmi', 'Shinyulmi' and 'Shinzami' was more than 1,300 kg/10a, and these cultivars showed to be highly adaptable for the late-season cultivation among 9 tested cultivars.
The effects of light and storage conditions on the germination of Oenothera lamarckiana were investigated. Germination was induced by red light, but inhibited by green, blue or infrared. No germination occurred in the dark. Radicle was more photosensitive than other parts of the seed. The rate of germination was proportional to increase in Light intensity ranging from 10 to 3000 Lux. Photosensitivity occurred 6 hrs after water imbibition of air-dried seeds. Maximum photosensitivity was detected 1-2 days after seeding under the light condition at 300 Lux. Germination was almost completed 3 days after seeding. When seeds stored in the chilling and wetting condition were kept at constant temperature in the dark, they germinated well. Air-dried seeds, however, didn't germinate. Whereas, the seeds which kept at alternating temperature had the tendency that seeds stored at room temperature (25$^{\circ}C$) germinated better than those stored at low temperature (4$^{\circ}C$).
This study of afterripening conditions during oyster mushroom (Suhanneutari 1ho) cultivation in bottles was investigated. Medium materials were used poplar-sawdust (68%), cotton seed peel (16%), Beet pulp (8%) and cotton seed cake (8%). Mix of materials was used as a percentage of the volume and to adjust moisture content (67%). Autoclaved mediums were placed in low temperature storage ($20^{\circ}C$) and then moved in inoculation room and conducted mechanical inoculation. Mycelial culture temperature was maintained at $20{\sim}21^{\circ}C$ and cultured during 18 days. The afterripening period were 6days, 9days, 12days and 15 days at $25{\sim}27^{\circ}C$. The yield of fruit body was higher for 9 days (163.1g/bottle) and 12 days (160.7g/bottle) than that of other afterripening period. Second, in the changes in moisture content of the medium according to the afterripening period, no significant changes were observed during mycelial grwoth. The longer afterripening period was showed slightly lower weight of media. The moisture content of media after harvest at afterripening for 9 days had the biggest reduction than any other treatments. In addition, weight of media and yield of afterripening for 9 days were the lowest and highest, respectively.
