This experiment was investigated the influence of water stress in growth and yields of safflower. The water stress treatment was early growth stage(Mar. 20~Apr. 18), middle growth stage(Apr. 29~May 28) and last growth stage(Jun. 8~Jul. 7) for 30 days, respectively. Stem length of plant was 127 cm in normal irrigation(control) state and that of growth middle stage at drought state was 96 cm, to be shorted more 31 cm than that of normal irrigation state, also other growth rate of plant was decreased, relatively. Number of effective flower bud per $m^2$ was 224 ea in normal irrigation state, 114 ea in growth middle stage at drought state. Yield of seed at drought state decreased 37% and 13% in growth middle stage(222 kg/10a) and last stage(307 kg/10a) than 353 kg/10a in normal irrigation state. According to the result, it could be estimated that optimum irrigation time(0.05 MPa) was 23days after non-rainfall at early growth stage(from sowing seed time to 30 days after sowing seed), 10 days in middle growth stage(41-70 days after sowing seed) and 9 days in last growth stage(81-110 days after sowing seed), to prevent the damage of drought.

BACKGROUND: Biochar (BC) has a great potential for enhancing soil fertility and carbon sequestration while facilitating beneficial waste disposition. Therefore, it is essential to assess and mitigate any inadvertent consequences associated with soil biochar amendment. Earthworm activity is very vital in the soil system, yet there are a limited number of studies that have examined their impact resulting from biochar application to soil. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the survival, growth, reproductive tests, and oxidative DNA damage tests (measured by 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and catalase (CAT) activities) to assess the potential toxicity to earthworm Eisenia fetida in artificial soil amended with BCs were investigated. The BCs derived from perilla meal, sesame meal, and pumpkin seed were pyrolyzed at 300 and $550^{\circ}C$, and then amended with soil at a rate of 5%. All the earthworms survived, but lost weight compared to control soil after 28 day incubation period. Moreover, the BC-amended soils did not significantly affect the cocoon numbers of earthworms. Slightly higher concentrations of 8-OHdG and CAT were observed in earthworms present in BC-treated soil than those in control soil. Furthermore, the 8-OHdG concentrations in the soil amended with BC produced at $550^{\circ}C$ were greater than those at $300^{\circ}C$, and it slightly decreased as the incubation time increased. CONCLUSION: These observations could be due to higher contents of toxic metal(loid)s and also higher pH in BCs pyrolyzed at $550^{\circ}C$ than $300^{\circ}C$. While BC is efficiently being used in agricultural fields, this study suggests that it is required to assess the unintended negative impacts of BC on soil ecosystems.

Objective : This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant activity and inhibitory effect on oxidative DNA damage of Nelumbinis Semen Extracts Methods : Nelumbins semen were extracted with hot-water and ethylacetate (EtOAC). The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl radical scavenging assay and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating assay were performed for antioxidative effect and ${\phi}X$-174 RF I DNA cleavage assay and intracellular DNA damage assay were used for inhibitory effect on intracellular DNA damage. Results : In DPPH, Hydroxyl radical scavenging activity and $Fe^{2+}$ chelating activity of EtOAC extracts were 96.22%, 53.53%, 64.72%, while those of hot-water extracts were 20.86%, 10.72%, 29.74% at $200{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, respectively. In ${\phi}X$-174 RF I plasmid DNA cleavage assay, the protective effects of EtOAC and hot-water extracts against oxidative DNA damage were 76% and 6% at $200{\mu}g/m{\ell}$, respectively. Conclusion : These results indicated that the seed extracts of Nelumbo nucifera can be used as a natural antioxidants, which effectively inhibits the oxidative DNA damage.
Rice bakanae is a typical seed-borne and seed-transmitted disease caused by infection by Fusarium fujikuroi. Seed disinfection using chemical fungicides (such as benomyl and prochloraz) is most effective in controlling the disease, but the emergence of fungicide-resistant strains has recently been increasing. Slightly acidic hypochlorous acid water (SAHW) is a safe and environmentally friendly disinfectant that has a potent and broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against viruses, bacteria, and fungi. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effectiveness of SAHW against F. fujikuroi strains, including chemical fungicide-resistant strains, as an alternative to conventional chemical fungicides in the management of bakanae disease. SAHW showed strong but similar levels of antifungal activity among the F. fujikuroi strains with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC90) of 5±2.5 ppm of free available chlorine (FAC). In addition, F. fujikuroi cells lost viability completely within 5 min of SAHW treatment due to the lethal damage to cell integrity. When the rice seeds infected by F. fujikuroi were treated with SAHW containing 20±10 ppm of FAC for 12 hr, the efficiencies of seed disinfection and disease control were 95-98% and 90.1-92.6%, respectively. Altogether, our data suggest that SAHW is an effective compound for controlling rice bakanae disease.
Antifungal activity on major seedborne diasease of crops was screened by the treatment of the extracts from 50 medicinal plants in vitro and in vivo. The extracts of garlic and taxus, Rheum undulatum, Achiranthes japonica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Oenothera lamar kiana treated with the blotting filter paper and water agar methods inhibited the growth of Pyricularia oryzae, Alternaria sesamicola, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Alternaria brassicicola among the tested plants. Antifungal activities on infected seeds by soaking methods were shown even at the dilution of the extracts by 10 times. The activity was the highest in soaking seeds at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The effect of plant extract on seed germination was not significant as compared with untreated seed. However, early growth of seedling was increased by the treatment of extracts. The extract of taxus slightly inhibited the seed germination of radish and chinese cabbage but those of Achirunthes japonica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis and Oenthfera lamarkiana showed severe damage on the seed germination and early growth of seedling.
Nickel micro-structures are fabricated by electroless plating which shows better uniformity. Positive resist AZ4562 of 7 um thickness is patterned with minimum width of 2 um on poly-silicon as for sacrificial layer. The growth rate of Ni electroless plating is 10um/h both for the seed layer of Pt and TiW. TiW is found to be more practical than Pt, since it is very difficult to remove Pt with negligible damage to Ni structures.
The interest of oligomeric proanthocyanidins(OPCs) as therapeutic agents against diseases involving radical damage is growing. Proanthocyanidins are a class of polyphenolic compounds in several plant species and are oligomers of flavan-3-ol monomer units. Polyphenols in green and black tea, grape seeds, grapes and wine have raised much attention but mountain grape seed has not been investigated intensively up to now This study investigated the total OPCs contents and the total antioxidant activity of mountain grape seeds. Total antioxidant activity using DPPH method was employed and OPCs contents were determined by means of the UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The total OPCs yield of mountain grape seeds was about 1.45 % and total antioxidant activity was 15.8 ${\mu}g/m{\ell}$.
Phytotoxic effects of ozone and ethylenediurea (EDU) on soybean (Glycine max) and spinach (Spinacia oleracea) were observed by using open-top field chamber system (OTC). Gas exchange rates (photosynthesis. stomatal conductance and transpiration rates) of soybean plants were decreased by 20% to 30% by ambient ozone and resulted in 30% reduction of seed yields. In OTC. ambient ozone and 0.12 $\mu$l/l $O_3$ decreased gas exchange rates of spinach by 25% to 40% and by 50%. respectively. The protective effect of EDU against ozone induced injury was obtained at 100 mg/l on soybean. and at 250 mg/l on spinach, respectively. The excessive application of EDU. however. inhibited photosynthesis. transpiration. and stomatal conductance without any specific visible damage.

Liquefaction hazard caused by earthquake is the damage in a wide range. Until now, liquefaction hazard potential at a small area or most structure in Korea was assessed by modified Seed & Idriss method. However, it has been known that this method is not proper for metropolitan area due to a lot of time and data to perform the related ground response analyses such as Shake program. For these reasons, the current method has been used facilities or structures, not metropolitan area. In this study, several contents in seismic design of Eurocode and Korean seismic design standard for Port and Harbor were introduced and applied for assessing the liquefaction potential and mapping the liquefaction hazard by LPI(Liquefaction Potential Index). Finally, Ulsan metropolitan city was practically drawn in two dimensional space.
We investigated the effect of silicate coating of rice seeds on bakanae disease incidence and the quality of seedlings raised in seedling boxes and transplanted into pots. The silicate-coated rice seed (SCS) was prepared as follows. Naturally infested rice seeds not previously subjected to any fungicidal treatment were dressed with a mixture of 25% silicic acid at pH 11 and 300-mesh zeolite powder at a ratio of 50 g dry seed - 9 mL silicic acid - 25 g zeolite powder. The following nursery conditions were provided : Early sowing, dense seeding in a glass house with mulching overnight and no artificial heating, which were the ideal conditions for determining the effect on the seed. The nursery plants were evaluated for Gibberella. fujikuroi infection or to determine the recovery to normal growth of infected nursery plants in the Wagner pot. Seedlings emerged 2-3 days earlier for the SCS than they did for the non-SCS control, while damping-off and bakanae disease incidence were remarkably reduced. Specifically, bakanae disease incidence in the SCS was limited to only 7.8% for 80 days after sowing, as compared to 91.6% of the non-SCS control. For the 45-days-old SCS nursery seedlings, the fresh weight was increased by 11% and was two times heavier, with only mild damage compared to that observed for non-SCS. Even after transplanting, SCS treatment contributed to a lower incidence of further infections and possibly to recovery of the seedlings to normal growth as compared to that observed in symptomatic plants in the pot. The active pathogenic macro-conidia and micro-conidia were considerably lower in the soil, root, and seedling sheath base of the SCS. In particular, the underdeveloped macro-conidia with straight oblong shape without intact septum were isolated in the SCS ; this phenotype is likely to be at a comparative etiological disadvantage when compared to that of typical active macro-conidia, which are slightly sickle-shaped with 3-7 intact septa. A active intact conidia with high inoculum potential were rarely observed in the tissue of the seedlings treated only in the SCS. We propose that promising result was likely achieved via inhibition of the development of intact pathogenic conidia, in concert with the aerobic, acidic conditions induced by the physiochemical characteristics associated with the air porosity of zeolite, alkalinity of silicate and the seed husk as a carbon source. In addition, the resistance of the healthy plants to pathogenic conidia was also important factor.
