Sediment flow through hydropower components causes hydro-abrasive erosion resulting in loss of efficiency, interruptions in power production and downtime for repair/maintenance. Online instruments are required to measure/capture the variations in sediment parameters along with collecting samples manually to analyse in laboratory for verification. In this paper, various sediment parameters viz. size, concentration (TSS), shape and mineral composition relevant to hydro-abrasive erosion were measured and discussed with respect to a hydropower plant in Himalayan region, India. A multi-frequency acoustic instrument was installed at a desilting chamber to continuously monitor particle size distribution (PSD) and TSS entering the turbine during 27 May to 6 August 2015. The sediment parameters viz. TSS, size distribution, mineral composition and shape entering the turbine were also measured and analysed, using manual samples collected twice daily from hydropower plant, in laboratory with instruments based on laser diffraction, dynamic digital image processing, gravimetric method, conductivity, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and turbidity. The acoustic instrument was able to capture the variation in TSS; however, significant deviations were found between measured mean sediment sizes compared to values found in the laboratory. A good relation was found for turbidity ($R^2=0.86$) and laser diffraction ($R^2=0.93$) with TSS, which indicated that turbidimeter and laser diffraction instrument can be used for continuous monitoring of TSS at the plant. Total sediment load passed through penstock during study period was estimated to be 15,500 ton. This study shall be useful for researchers and hydropower managers in measuring/monitoring sediment for hydro-abrasive erosion study in hydropower plants.
Particle settling behavior was studied by the computer simulation using simultaneous particle condensation and relaxation. This three-dimensional settling algorithm includes the estimation of powder sediment density. Density distribution through the powder sediment was compared and was agreed well with the experimental findings. Settling density depended strongly of the degree of particle relaxation. Sediment strength and isotropy also depended on the degree of particle relaxation. Sever particle bridging was found near sharp corners.
The distribution patterns of the benthic macrofauna of Han Estuary and Kyonggi Bay and the controlling environmental factors were studied at twenty-five stations in spring and fall of 1989. As a result, four biological groups were established as follows : Crassostrea gigas-Balanus reticulatus (Group I), Heteromastus filiformis-Mediomastus californiensis-Lumbrineris spp. -Sternaspis scutata-Tharyx sp. 1-Diopatra bilobata (Group II-A), Haustoriids-Phoxocephalids-Moerella rutila (Group II-B) and Nephtys chemulpoensis (Group II-C in March) and indistinctive group which was composed of common species (II-C in September). Results of the habitat analysis revealed that most of the dominant species showed narrow ranges of habitat niche in March and relatively wide ranges in September. Based on multiple discriminant analysis, the critical environmental factors governing their distributions are salinity in the regions of Yomha and Sokmo Channel in Han Estuary and sediment types in Kyonggi Bay. Also, sediment instability during the rainy season due to run-off was assumed to play a major role in the species composition of the benthic communities and their distribution in the study area.

Recently, the construction of the several highway bridges in the karst area have encountered severe problems associated with cavities and sinkholes. To solve this problems, it is important to understand the distribution characteristics of cavities in the construction site on limestone area. This paper briefly describes the different types, the distribution control factors and the infill sediment types of lime-cavities in the study area, bridge site in the karst area and propose the effective method of survey design. Cavity system may be divided into two main groups, 1)'slot and cave system'and 2)'sinkhole and cave system'. And the shape, the size and the distribution pattern of cavity are controlled by three main factors - rock type, geological structure and ground water condition. Additionally, infill sediment may be considered as one of the important design factors for foundation design and divided into four types by sediment properties. There are geophysical thechnics and geologic survey and drilling test, etc. by the survey method to interpretate characteristics of cavity system, and this methods are optimally designed at the site investigation stage.
Efffcts of physico-chemical factors on the zonation and vertical distribution of benthic microalgal communities in the tidal flats of Youngkwang and Canaiin, Korea, were studied. Concentrations of nutrients were low throughout the study period. A 38 species of benthic microaigae was identified. Most of the algae were pennate diatoms with small size. Cell numbers at silty sediments were higher than sandy sediments, and showed high patchy distribution. Zonal distributions of benthic microalgae showed higher variation from silty sediment than sandy sediments. Benthic microalgae showed vertical migration within the upper few mm of sediment with periodicity closely related to tidal cycles. Maximum cells were observed from 0 mm depth both sandy and silty sediments. Cells of benthic microalgae in the 1 - 2 mm depth decreased after desiccation of sediments. The variation of cells was higher at sandy sediments than silty sediments. Cell numbers of benthic microalgae showed no positive relationships with pH and nutrinets except NH$_4$-N.

In Korea, total sediment discharge of a river has been estimated simply by using certain sediment transport formulas including, among others, Einstein's formula. Those formular, however, are known not to be reliable enough for the result calculated by them to be used directly to river planning and management. Therefore, the study used the Modified Einstein Procedure to the estimation of total sediment discharge, because this method is reliable estimated by measurement. Here, measurement of sediment discharge used depth integrating method. The major results obtained from the study for estimation by depth integrating method of sediment discharge in Naeseong stream are as follow; 1 The sedeiment characteristics of Naeseong stream are; The distribution of sediment grain size shows that silt and clay are 55% and sand is 45%. and the bed load sediment grain size is constituted that sand contained with the grain size from O.062mm to 2.0mm is 80% 2. The sediment rating formulas derived from the regression analysis between the sediment discharge and flow discharge are; Seogpo-Gyo : Qs=$0.017 \times 10^{-4} Q^{2.352}$, where discharge is l0cms $0.074 \times 10^{-4} Q^{2.066}$, where discharge is l0cms
The pollution characteristics of water quality analysis and the heavy metal analysis of river sediment in the Western Nakdong river, and then a commercial tile using the polluted sediment was produced. The analytical results of the riverbed structure and the depth distribution in the Western Nakdong river were that Macdo Stream(site 2) was the deepest(13 ft). The analytical result of water quality showed that BOD was the highest in the Hogei Stream(site 6); COD, Syanduengchi Island(site 1);SS, Macdo Stream(site 2);T-N, Suanduengchi Island(site 1);T-P, Macdo Stream(site 2). Therefore the deeper the site was the higher the pollution concentration was. The result of heavy metal analysis of the river sediment was that Pb and Cr were the highest in Kangdong Bridge(site 9); Cd, Macdo Stream(site 2), so the deeper the site was the higher the pollution concentration was. The production of tile using the mixure of the polluted sediment and the raw material was successful, so the reuse of polluted sediment was possible.
Measurements of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were taken in surface sediments inside Seogwipo and Hallim Harbors of Jeju Island, Korea, to evaluate their distribution. These harbors typically have heavy ship traffic. The samples were collected three times (in June, October, and December, 2013). PCB concentrations in sediments from Seogwipo Harbor were higher than in those from Hallim Harbor, but both levels were very low, compared with those in other parts of the world. Sedimentary PCB levels had a strong correlation with organic carbon and fine granule mud content. PCB concentration values in the examined surface sediments were much lower than Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs) such as ER-L (Effect Rrange-Low), TEL (Threshold Effects Level) and ISQG (Interim Sediment Quality Guideline)-low value applied in countries, such as USA, Canada, and Australia. This suggests that the PCBs did not have significant biological effects on benthic organisms in the marine environment.
Phthalates and di-2-ethylhexyladipate are both widely used as industrial chemicals and exposure high levels over long periods of time can cause toxicity, estrogenic responses and endocrine disruption properties in both humans and animals. So far, their global monitoring in environmental matrices has been performed continuously. A developed method, including modified SPEED'98 (Japan Environment Agency) and USEPA was established for simple and rapid determination of phthalates and di-2-ethylhexyladipate in various matrices. This method was applied to explore the distribution levels in domestic environmental media such as water, soil and sediment. Eight phthalates (DEP(di-ethyl), DEHP(di-[2-ethyl-hexyl]), DprP (di-propyl), DBP(di-n-butyl), DPP(di-n-pentyl), DHP(di-n-hexyl), DCHP(di-cyclohexyl), BBP(butyl benzyl) and Adipate (di-2-ethylhexyl adipate) were investigated by seasonal sampling(spring, autumn) at 24 domestic sites. Phthalates and adipate were not detected in water samples and DEP, DBP, and DEHP were mainly detected in soil and sediment samples. The concentrations of DEP and DBP excluding DEHP in spring were higher in soil than those of sediment. Total concentrations of phthalates were significantly decreased in autumn for both soil and sediment.

A numerical method based on genetic algorithms was introduced to characterize the grain-size distribution more effectively. This technique was proved significant particularly for multimodal size distributions, as was verified for samples from Korea Strait continental shelf. Sediment samples collected from the Korea Strait continental shelf revealed that $96\%$ of the grain-size distributions were multimodal. Therefore, the use of grain-size parameters was not the ideal method. As an alternative method, the decomposition of sue curves into elementary normal component curves was used. Means and standard deviations of 593 decomposed normal components were calculated by a numerical method from 268 size curves of Korea Strait sediments. The mean values of decomposed normal components showed peaks at $1\~3\phi\;and\;7\~9\phi$ size classes. The plot of mean and standard deviation values of the coarse fraction normal components on the map showed a characteristic areal distribution. The characteristic distribution was found to derive from underlying Pleistocene sediment on the basis of sea bottom geologic distribution of the area. The method of decomposition into normal components was found to be more effective than the analysis using traditional grain-size parameters in investigation of multimodal size distribution of Korea Strait shelf sediment.
