  • In this study, the movable bed model testing was carried out so as to analyze bed profile changes including predicting scouring and deposition of bed profile and to solve hydraulic problems affecting with bed and both-bank between upstream and downstream of intake weir in the Nakdong river channel. The movable bed model testing consists of fundamental test, movable model test and numerical analysis method respectively. The fundamental test was enforced to analyze relationship of discharge and sediment load in the tilting flume. When the movable model test was worked, it was shown that sediment budget between input sediment load and output sediment load was balanced exactly. As a result of movable model test, it was presented that scouring and deposition changes in quantities between the upstream and downstream of modification weir were less than those of nature and planning weir. Finally, numerical analysis method was operated by 1-dimensional bed profile changes model ; HEC-6 model so as to complement unsolving hard problems during movable model test. So, modification weir will sustained the stable bed profile changes than any other weirs in the study channel.

  • With 30 excisting reservoirs in the Chin-Young area, the Sedimentation of the reservoirs has been calculated by comparing the present capacity with the original value, which revealed its reduced reservoir capacity. The reservoirs has a total drainage area of 3l4l ha, with a total capacity of 43.23 ha-m, and are short of water supply due to reduction of reservoir capacity, Annual sedimentation in the reservoir is relation to the drainage area, the mean of annual rainfall, and the slop of drainage area. The results of obtained from the investigation are summarized as follows: (1) A Sediment deposition rate is high, being about 7.03㎥/ha of drainage area, and resulting in the overage decrease of reservoir capacity by 16.1%. This high rate of deposition coule be mainly attributed to the serve denudation of forests due to disorderly cuttings of tree. (2) An average unit storageof 116mm as the time of initial construction is decreased to 95.6mm at present. This phenomena cause a greater storage of irrigation water, sinceit was assumed that original storage quantity itself was already in short. (3) A sediment deposition rate as a relation to the capacity of unit drainge area is as follow: Qs=1.27(C/A)0.6 and standard deviation is 185.5㎥/$\textrm{km}^2$/year. (4) A sediment deposition rate as a relation to the mean of annual rainfall is as follow: Qs=21.9p10.5 and the standard deviation is 364.8㎥/$\textrm{km}^2$/year. (5) A sediment deposition rate as a relation to the mean slop of drainage area is follow: Qs=39.6S0.75 and the standard deviation is 190.2㎥/$\textrm{km}^2$/year (6) Asediment deposition rate as a relation to the drainage area, mean of rainfall, mean of slope of drainage area is: Log Qs=0.197+0.108LogA-6.72LogP+2.20LogS and the standard deviation is 92.4㎥/$\textrm{km}^2$/year

  • In this study, the simulation of sediment deposition at Sangju weir reservoir, South Korea, was carried out using artificial neural networks. The ANNs have typically been used in water resources engineering problems for their robustness and high degree of accuracy. Three basic variables namely turbid water inflow, outflow, and water stage have been used as input variables. It was found that ANNs were able to establish valid relationship between input variables and target variable of sedimentation. The R value was 0.9806, 0.9091, and 0.8758 for training, validation, and testing phase respectively. Comparative analysis was also performed to find optimum structure of ANN for sediment deposition prediction. 3-14-1 network architecture using BR algorithm outperformed all other combinations. It was concluded that ANN possess mapping capabilities for complex, non-linear phenomenon of reservoir sedimentation.

  • Most small weir installed in Korea is concrete solidated weir. Fixed weir causes stagnant flow, which leads to deposit sediment just upstream of weir. As time goes on, it would induce reduction of water storage capacity and invoke the serious water quality issues. Therefore, there has been a growing interest in movable weir. Especially, the flexible rubber weir is easy to install and possible to operate in extreme environments. However, even though this type can be flatable, it is also not free from sediment deposition problem. Thus, to enhance the ability of releasing deposition the bypass pipe was constructed underneath it. In this study the performance of its ability was examined with hydraulic model test. This bypass pipe was designed with 3 different dimensions to connect between each bottom of upstream and downstream of a weir, such as Type A, B, and C. The efficiency of drainage of deposition upstream was studied under two water of upstream and sediment heights. In addition, the ability of sediment emission through the bypass pipe after the pipe was blocked by debris like soil, vegetation et al. was examined by video monitoring. From this study, it was suggested a dimensionless equation which show the relationship of variable parameters and amount of emission sediment through bypass pipe. And it was found that the most significant factors on efficiency of releasing were elbow angle and discharge, and the ability of emission when the pipe was blocked was most highly influenced in tilting length.

  • Flows of water in the environment (e.g. in a river or estuary) generally occur in complex conditions. This complexity can hinder a general understanding of flows and their related sedimentary processes, such as erosion and deposition. To gain insight in simplified, controlled conditions, hydraulic flumes are a popular type of laboratory research equipment. Linear flumes use pumps to recirculation water. This isn't appropriate for the investigation of cohesive sediments as pumps can break fragile cohesive sediment flocs. To overcome this limitation, the rotating annular flume (RAF) was developed. While not having pumps, a side-effect is that unwanted secondary circulations can occur. To counteract this, the top and bottom lid rotate in opposite directions. Furthermore, a larger flume is considered better as it has less curvature and secondary circulation. While only a few RAFs exist, they are important for theoretical research which often underlies numerical models. Many of the first-generation of RAFs have come into disrepair. As new measurement techniques and models become available, there is still a need to research cohesive sediment erosion and deposition in facilities such as a RAF. New RAFs also can have the advantage of being automatic instead of manually operated, thus improving data quality. To further advance our understanding of cohesive sediment erosion and deposition processes, a large, automatic RAF (1.72 m radius, 0.495 m channel depth, 0.275 m channel width) has been constructed at the Hydraulic Laboratory at Chungnam National University (CNU), Korea. The RAF has the ability to simulate both unidirectional (river) and bidirectional (tide) flows with supporting instrumentation for measuring turbulence, bed shear stress, suspended sediment concentraiton, floc size, bed level, and bed density. Here we present the current status and future prospect of the CNU RAF. In the future, calibration of the rotation rate with bed shear stress and experiments with unidirectional and bidirectional flow using cohesive kaolinite are expected. Preliminary results indicate that the CNU RAF is a valuable tool for fundamental cohesive sediment transport research.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model was applied to investigate the sediment transport and sand bank formation in a macrotidal sea, the Kyunggi and Asan Bays. The tidal residual currents show quite complex pattern including counter-rotating eddies off the northwestern corner of the Dugjeok Island that reflect the promontory effect. Complex residual eddies are also present off the coast of the Taeanbando and in the Asan Bay. Net sediment transport pattern shows that sandy sediments in the Kyunggi and Asan Bays are generally transported landward from the outer sea suggesting sediment trapping inside the bays. This phenomenon may be related to the formation and maintenance of numerous sand banks in this macrotidal sea. Alternate occurrences of deposition and erosion predicted from the numerical model along the coast of the Taeanbando with strong deposition on the southwestern part of the 'Jangansatoe'(JSB), a large sand ridge off the coast of the Taeanbando appear to reflect the loose connection of JSB, The 'Joongangcheontoe', a central sand bank (CSB) with the main axis in the NW-SE direction in the Asan Bay may undergo a modification with strong deposition along the northeastern flank. These results indicate that the sand banks are actively modified and maintained by the strong tidal currents in this shallow macrotidal sea.

  • In this study, the sensitivity analysis of bed changes due to the various sediment transport equations have been conducted for 80 km reach of the Lower Nakdong River using the HEC-6 which is one dimensional numerical model. The bed elevation changes according to the different sediment transport formulas were compared and analyzed quantitatively. As a result of the numerical simulation, the final bed elevation calculated by Engelund and Hansen(1967), Ackers and White(1973), and Yang(1979) formulas was similar to one another in configuration. The bed change simulated by Engelund and Hansen(1967) were greatest among them, for example, 5.5 m deposition and 2.9 m erosion for 100 years. Also, in the case of Toffaleti (1969) equation, the maximum bed deposition of 8.04 m after 100 years was induced at the 73 km location upstream of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage. Meyer-Peter-M$\ddot{u}$ller(1948) and Wilcock(2001) formulas produced the deposition only at the upstream end and there was little bed change in the downstream area. The unreal bed configuration of continuously up and down pattern was simulated by Laursen(1958) transport equation.

  • A grid-based KIneMatic wave soil-water EROsion and deposition Model (KIMEROM) that predicts temporal variation and spatial distribution of sediment transport in a watershed was developed. This model uses ASCII-formatted map data supported from the regular gridded map of GRASS (U.S. Army CERL, 1993)-GIS (Geographic Information Systems), and generates the distributed results by ASCIIl-formatted map data. For hydrologic process, the kinematic wave equation and Darcy equation were used to simulate surface and subsurface flow, respectively (Kim, 1798; Kim et al., 1993). For soil erosion process, the physically-based soil erosion concept by Rose and Hairsine (1988) was used to simulate soil-water erosion and deposition. The model adopts sing1e overland flowpath algorithm and simulates surface and subsurface water depth, and sediment concentration at each grid element (or a given time increment. The model was tested to a 162.3 km$^2$ watershed located in the tideland reclaimed area of South Korea. After the hydrologic calibration for two storm events in 1999, the results of sediment transport were presented for the same storm events. The results of temporal variation and spatial distribution of overland flow and sediment areas are shown using GRASS.
