Considering the randomness and uncertainty of wind power, a reliability model of WTGs is established based on the combination of the Weibull distribution and the Markov chain. To analyze the failure mode quickly, we use the switch-section partitioning method. After defining the first-level load zone node, we can obtain the supply power sets of the first-level load zone nodes with each WTG. Based on the supply sets, we propose the dynamic division strategy of island operation. By adopting the fault analysis method with the attributes defined in the switch-section, we evaluate the reliability of the distribution network with WTGs using a sequential Monte Carlo simulation method. Finally, using the IEEE RBTS Bus6 test system, we demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed model and method by comparing different schemes to access the WTGs.

For structural engineers, design of pile cap causes difficulties since design of this member is not specifically addressed by codes. In general, pile cap is considered as deep beam and designed for shear and moment at specified critical section. This is called as traditional section method. However, many international design codes suggest the application of strut tie method for better design of this member. In this paper, a brief application of strut tie method to the design check of pile cap structure designed by section method is presented. Unlike well known pile cap with single column, the example pile cap has two columns. In order to find out proper load path under various load condition, three dimensional finite element method was carried out. The result indicates that provided reinforcement by traditional section method has sufficient capacity to meet the design requirements.
The ball bearing with thin-section raceways which is much lighter than other conventional bearings used in most modem passenger cars and small tracks. The important design parameters of this bearing is the groove radius of raceways, the diametral clearance, the free contact angle and so on. The optimal value of these parameters were determined by considering the dynamic load capacity, the contact angle and the calculated fatigue life. The contact angle between a ball and raceways was calculated by considering the local contact deformation and the structural deformation of thin-section raceways which was estimated by FEM. The raceways were made by means of the press-forming process. The fatigue life tester was designed and manufactured. The fatigue life test was executed and the reliability of this bearing was confirmed.

This study introduces a layered sectional analysis for a PSC girder with a vaiable cross section and curved tendons. To consider the shear equilibrium at a concrete layer with curved tendons, the shear stress distribution has been computed at each section. In addition, to improve the convergence to the solution, a system identification technique is newly adopted in the solution process for strain computation. To examine the feasibility of the proposed approach, a static load test has been conducted for a full scale PSC girder with variable cross section. The prediction shows a good agreement with experiment. It is seen that a uniform cross section has the same moment capacity with a variable cross section while the variable cross section has more shear capacity than the uniform cross section. It is also noted that the maximum displacement of a variable cross section is a little smaller than a uniform cross section.

This paper deals with the static optimal shapes of simple beams which are subjected to a vertical point load. The area and second moment of inertia of the regular polygon cross-section of the tapered beams are determined, which have always same volume and same length for the parabolic taper. The differential equation governing the elastic curve is derived using the small deflection theory and solved numerically. By using the numerical results of deflections, rotations and bending stresses of such beams, the optimal shapes, namely, optimal section ratios, of the beams subjected to a single point load according to variation of load position parameters are determined and presented in the figures. Examples of the static optimal shapes for beams with a single load and multiple loads are reported. The design process of this study can be used directly for the minimum weight design of simple beams.
This study evaluated the chance of driver's Psychophysiological load of occipital lobe at freeway merging area and compared with basic driving section. Ten persons of 8 men and 2 women were investigated at 3 basic section and 3 merging areas on the Youngdong freeway. It is found that driver's load in acceleration lane before merging is 2.21 times higher than the basic driving section. Further, driver's load for merging was maintained fur 4 seconds after merging. Particularly, driver's highest loading point in merging behavior was found to be 80m from the gore area.

In this paper, we present the result of investigations pertaining to the elastic buckling of simply supported columns with various cross-sectional dimensions but the same length and volume. In the investigations the accuracy of the analysis methods is studied and it was found that the result obtained by the successive approximations technique is the most accurate. In addition, the elastic buckling loads of columns with variable cross-section dimensions are obtained by the theoretical and numerical methods. From the results, it was found that the buckling loads obtained by the numerical methods are close to the buckling loads obtained by the successive approximations technique for the practical standpoints. Moreover, the buckling load of column with convexity in its middle is the highest while the buckling load of the tapered column is the lowest as expected.
This paper describes a method of the refined plastic hinge approach in the framework of the higher-order element formulation that can efficaciously evaluate the limit state capacity of a whole reinforced concrete structural system using least number of element(s), whereas the traditional design of a reinforced concrete structure (i.e. AS3600; Eurocode 2) is member-based approach. Hence, in regard to the material nonlinearities, the efficient and economical cross-section analysis is provided to evaluate the element section capacity of non-uniform and arbitrary concrete section subjected to the interaction effects, which is helpful to formulate the refined plastic hinge method. In regard to the geometric nonlinearities, this paper relies on the higher-order element formulation with element load effect. Eventually, the load redistribution can be considered and make full use of the strength reserved owing to the redundancy of an indeterminate structure. And it is particularly true for the performance-based design of a structure under the extreme loads, while the uncertainty of the extreme load is great that the true behaviour of a whole structural system is important for the economical design approach, which is great superiority over the conservative optimal strength of an individual and isolated member based on traditional design (i.e. AS3600; Eurocode 2).

To analyze the effects of compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio on buckling behavior of columns, 36tied reinforced concrete columns with hinged ends were tested. The 100mm square cross section was used and the amount of eccentricity was 10mm. The compressive strengths of column specimens with slenderness ratios of 15, 30 and 50 were 202, 513 and 752 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The longitudinal steel ratio of columns with bending about a section diagonal and about a principal axis were 2.85%(4-D10). The ratio of ultimate load capacity to that of short column with the same eccentricity was much decreased at high slenderness ratio with increasing the compressive strength of concrete. And the lateral displacement of column at the ultimate load was decreased as the strength was increased. These are due to that at high slenderness ratio, the load capacity and behavior of column are affected by flexural rigidity. And, it was also found that for the same quantity of confining steel and level of axis load, there is little difference between the flexural strength for bending about a section diagonal and for bending about principal axis.

Section forces of greenhouse structures were studied to suggest basic information for the structural design of greenhouses with respect to roof types and support conditions. Structural analyses were performed for pitched and arched roof, and fixed and hinged support under snow loads and wind loads. Followings are the results obtained and are expected to be useful in determining the span length and roof type in greenhouse design. 1. Special considerations might he required for roof design at the heavy snow region, and for the support design at the strong wind region, respectively. 2. Single-span structure was found to be stronger than multi-span structure under the snow load, but the former was found to be weaker than the latter under the wind load. 3. Arched roof structure was expected to be safer than pitched roof structure if the dimensions and loads were equal. 4. Greenhouse orientation and roof slope should be considered in optimum structural design of grrenhouses, because these two factors are closely related with the influence of wind load and snow load.
