  • Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) is a promising tool to measure isotope ratios of individual uranium particles in environmental samples for nuclear safeguards. However, the analysis requires prior identification of a small number of uranium particles that coexist with a large number of other particles without uranium. In the present study, this identification was performed by scanning electron microscopy - energy dispersive X-ray analysis with automated particle search mode. The analytical results for an environmental sample taken at a nuclear facility indicated that the observation of backscattered electron images with × 1000 magnification was appropriate to efficiently identify uranium particles. Lower magnification (less than × 500) made it difficult to detect smaller particles of approximately 1 μm diameter. After identification, each particle was manipulated and transferred for subsequent isotope ratio analysis by SIMS. Consequently, the isotope ratios of individual uranium particles were successfully determined without any molecular ion interference. It was demonstrated that the proposed technique provides a powerful tool to measure individual particles not only for nuclear safeguards but also for environmental sciences.

  • We show that a combined technique of Cs$^{+}$ reactive ion scattering (Cs$^{+}$ RIS) and low-energy secondary ion mass spectrometry (LESIMS) provides a powerful means for probing molecular films and their surface reactions. Simple molecules, including HCI, NH$_3$, D$_2$O, and their mixtures, were deposited into a thin film of several monolayer thickness on Ru(001) at low temperature in vacuum, and the surface was characterized by Cs$^{+}$ RIS and LESIMS. On pure films, D$_2$O, HCI, and NH$_3$ existed in the corresponding molecular states. When HCI and NH$_3$ were co-deposited, ammonium ion(NH$_4$$^{+}$) was readily formed by proton transfer from HCI to NH$_3$. In the presence of water molecules, HCI ionized first to hydronium ion(H$_3$O$^{+}$), which subsequently transferred proton to NH$_3$ to form NH$_4$$^{+}$. The proton transfer, however, did not occur to a completion on ice, in contrast to the complete reaction in aqueous solutions.s solutions.

  • This work aimed to classify Aspergillus (8 species, 28 strains) by using a secondary metabolite profile-based chemotaxonomic classification technique. Secondary metabolites were analyzed by liquid chromatography ion-trap mass spectrometry (LC-IT-MS) and multivariate statistical analysis. Most strains were generally well separated from each section. A. lentulus was discriminated from the other seven species (A. fumigatus, A. fennelliae, A. niger, A. kawachii, A. flavus, A. oryzae, and A. sojae) with partial least-squares discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) with five discriminate metabolites, including 4,6-dihydroxymellein, fumigatin, 5,8-dihydroxy-9-octadecenoic acid, cyclopiazonic acid, and neosartorin. Among them, neosartorin was identified as an A. lentulus-specific compound that showed anticancer activity, as well as antibacterial effects on Staphylococcus epidermidis. This study showed that metabolite-based chemotaxonomic classification is an effective tool for the classification of Aspergillus spp. with species-specific activity.

  • Many of the complex materials developed today derive their unique properties from the presence of multiple phases or from local variations in elemental concentration. Simply performing analysis of the bulk materials is not sufficient to achieve a true understanding of their physical and chemical natures. Secondary ion mass spectrometer (SIMS) has met with a great deal of success in material characterization. The basis of SIMS is the use of a focused ion beam to erode sample atoms from the selected region. The atoms undergo a charge exchange with their local environment, resulting in their conversion to positive and negative secondary ions. The mass spectrometric analysis of these secondary ions is a robust method capable of identifying elemental distribution from hydrogen to uranium with detectability of the parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppb) in atomic range. Nano secondary ion mass spectrometer (Nano SIMS, Cameca Nano-SIMS 50) equipped with the reactive ion such as a cesium gun and duoplasmatron gun has a spatial resolution of 50 nm which is much smaller than other SIMS. Therefore, Nano SIMS is a very valuable tool to map the spatial distribution of elements on the surface of various materials In this talk, the surface imaging applications of Nano SIMS in KBSI will be presented.

  • We reported that amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin film provide sample plate exhibiting a multimodality to measure biomolecules by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS). Kim et al.1 reported that a-Si thin film were suitable to detect small molecules such as drugs and peptides by SIMS and LDI-MS. Recently, bacterial identification has been required in many fields such as food analysis, veterinary science, ecology, agriculture, and so on.2 Mass spectrometry is emerging for identifying and profiling microbiology samples from its advantageous characters of label-free and shot-time analysis. Five species of bacteria - S. aureus, G. glutamicum, B. kurstaki, B. sphaericus, and B. licheniformis - were sampled for MS analysis without lipid extraction in sample preparation steps. The samples were loaded onto the a-Si thin film with a thickness of 100 nm which did not only considered laser-beam penetration but also surface homogeneity. Mass spectra were recorded in both positive and negative ionization modes for more analytical information. High reproducibility and sensitivity of mass spectra were demonstrated in a mass range up to mass-to-charge ratio(m/z) 1200 by applying the a-Si thin film in mentioned above MS. Principle component analysis (PCA) - a popular statistical analysis widely used in data processing was employed to differentiate between five bacterial species. The PCA results verified that each bacterial species were readily distinguished and differentiated effectively from our MS approach. It shows a new opportunity to rapid bacterial profiling and identification in clinical microbiology. More details will be discussed in the presentation.

  • Uniformly-doped silicon thin films were fabricated by ion beam sputter deposition. The thin films had four levels of copper dopant concentration ranging between 1 ${\times}$1019 and 1 ${\times}$ 1021 atoms/cm3 . Concentrations of Copper dopants were determined by the isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to provide certified reference data for the quantitative surface analysis by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The copper-doped thin films were dissolved in a mixture of 1 M HF and 3 M HNO3 spiked with appropriate amounts of 65 Cu. For an accurate isotope ratio determination, both the detector dead time and the mass discrimination were appropriately corrected and isobaric interference from SiAr molecular ions was avoided by a careful sample pretreatment. An analyte recovery efficiency was obtained for the Cu spiked samples to evaluate accuracy of the method. Uncertainty of the determined copper concentrations, estimated following the EURACHEM Guide, was less than 4%, and detection limit of this method was 5.58 ${\times}$ 1016 atoms/cm3.

  • The elements B, P and As can each be implanted in silicon; for the fabrication of integrated semiconductor devices and the wells in CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor). The implanted range due to different implanted species calculated using TRIM (Transport of Ions in Matter) simulation results was considered. The profiles of implanted samples could be measured using SIMS (secondary ion mass spectrometry). In the comparison between the measured and simulated data, some deviations were shown in the profiles of MeV implanted silicon. The Moliere, C-Kr, and ZBL potentials were used for the range calculations, and the results showed almost no change in the MeV energy region. However, the calculations showed remarkably improved results through the modification of the electronic stopping power. The results also matched very well with SIMS data. The calculated tolerances of $R_p$ and ${\Delta}R_p$ between the modified $S_e$ of TRIM and SIMS data were remarkably better than the tolerances between the TRIM and SIMS data.

  • Surface films formed prior to bulk reduction of lithium have been studied at gold, platinum, and copper electrodes in rigorously dried propylene carbonate solutions using electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) and secondary ion mass spectrometry experiments. The results indicate that the passive film formation takes place at a potential as positive as about 2.0 V vs. Li/Li+ , and the passive film thus formed in this potential region is thicker than a monolayer. Quantitative analysis of the EQCM results indicates that electrogenerated lithium reacts with solvent molecules to produce a passive film consisting of lithium carbonate and other compounds of larger molecular weights. The presence of lithium carbonate is verified by SIMS, whereas the lithium compounds of low molecular weights, including lithium hydroxide and oxide, are not detected. Further lithium reduction takes place underneath the passive film at potentials lower than 1.2 V with a voltammetric current peak at about 0.6 V.

  • Plasma Source Ion Implantation (PSII) technique was used for the hydrophilization or hydrophobization of polymer surfaces. Polymers were modified with different plasma gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and tetrafluoromethane, and for varying lengths of treatment time. Plasma ion treatment of oxygen, nitrogen, argon and their mixtures increased significantly the hydrophilic properties of polymer surfaces. More hydrophobic surfaces of polymers were formed after the treatment with tetrafluoromethane. A study of plasma source ion implanted polymers was performed using contact angle measurements and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The TOF-SIMS spectra and depth profile were used to obtain the information about the treated surfaces of polymers. The permanence of this technique could be evaluated with respect to ageing time. The surfaces treated with PSII gave better stability than other surface modification methods.
