  • This study sets it's face to define effects of the various loading periods in normal consolidation area on clay's compression and long-term consolidation characteristics through a laboratory test using homogeneous remolded clay. Moreover, by carrying out a long-term consolidation test which diversifies initial consolidation applicable to effective overburden loading in the various loading period. This study intended to suggest the method predicting the final settlement on the basis of loading periods by comparing and analyzing compression curve's characteristics according to loading weight of each stage and increase in loading period when carrying out the standard consolidation test. From the test results, the study shows that as of the soft clay's compression characteristics on the basis of various loading periods, preconsolidation load has a tendency to be decreased slightly as the loading period is getting more and more longer at each step after initial consolidation load puts on the remolded clay which is caused by secondary consolidation's increase in the latter part of each phase. And those effects have an weaker influence on compression index in normal consolidation area at the same time as secondary consolidation brought out quasi-overconsolidation and stabilization of clay's structure, have an influence re-compression index is increased in overconsolidation area on the other hand.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the environment of optimal location of the dwelling (hereafter referred as dwelling site) in the Neolithic Age found in Unseo-dong relics group, Yeongjong-do, Incheon from the geographical and geomorphological perspectives. For this purpose, micro-landform, altitude, gradient, distance from the river of water available for use and the difference between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use based on change of dwelling site over periods were analyzed targeting ground surface of hills where individual dwelling sites (a total of 68 sites) discovered in investigation area so far. As a result, it was shown that the Upper sideslope were selected as the primary dwelling location standard in investigation area where the Neolithic people lived upon selecting the dwelling site (or settlement). In addition, the ground surface of dwelling site had the altitude of 21-31m and slope of $5-10^{\circ}$ (gentle slope) as the secondary and it had distance of 514-549m from the river of water available for use and difference of 11-23m between the highest altitude and lowest altitude of river bed of water available for use. Thus, it was shown that the space to get water relatively easy from two places at the same time was the secondary dwelling location standard.

  • Pollution reduction and/or control technology becomes one of the pressing post-semiconductor research field to lead an advanced industrial structure. Soil/groundwater remediation techniques may act as a core technology which will create many demands on pollution reduction areas. A plenty numbers of abandoned metal mines were left without any remediation action in Korea, and it may be potential sources of heavy metal and As contamination in the ecosystem. In order to bring this soil contamination to a settlement, the emerging soil/groundwater remediation techniques should be introduced. Main research topics in the United States and Europe move towards the clean remediation technology without any secondary impact and the feasible application of developing technique into the field scale study. With these advantages, several soil/groundwater techniques such as electrokinetic soil processing, permeable reactive barrier, stabilization/solidification, biosorption, soil flushing with biosurfactant, bioleaching and phytoremediation will be summarized in this paper.

  • Settlement analysis based on oedometer test results with or without Skempton-Bjerrum's modification method ( widely used for practical purposes when estimating consolidation settlements of soft clay deposits) has shortcomings that it cannot simulate real stress states and deformation behaviors of soils in case that in-situ loading and deformation conditions are not 1-dimensional. In this study, the stress path method, reflecting various probable stress paths, was employed to normally - consolidated kaolinite samples by using automated triaxial testing device which can control stress paths automatically. From this experimental study, elastic, consolidation, secondary compression and pore pressure development - dissipation behaviors under various stress paths were analyzed and deformation characteristics of soft clays, which can be the basis of rational estimation of settlements, were studied. Also by comparing results of stress path tests with those of 1-dimensional consolidation tests, limitations and problems of conventional methods were clarified.

  • Dredged soil from sea has much higher water content than liquid limit of clay and even if small loads apply, it will suffer a great settlement. Therefore it is very difficult to perform a consolidation test with general consolidation apparatus because of high water content. In this study Rowe cell apparatus consolidation tests have been performed with 5 slurry clays of a water content of 100%, 110%, 120%, 133%, and 150%. From the test results the consolidation characteristics such as compression index, secondary compression index, consolidation coefficient, and strain have been investigated with a variation of water content of dredged soil. The equations to get consolidation constants such as a compression index, a coefficient of consolidation, and strain have been proposed with the field water content.

  • Established in the lower reaches of the Nakdong river in Busan, the Noksan national industrial complex is one of the deepest soft ground areas in Korea. In case of the costal landfill having deep soft ground, there is a significant residual settlement over a long period of time. In this study, there was observed ground subsidence occurred in the Noksan national industrial complex from September 2002 to April 2007 by applying DInSAR and SBAS time series method using RADARSAT-1 and Envisat SAR datasets. As a result, it was calculated that ground subsidence developed at the velocity of about maximum 10 cm/yr and mean 6 cm/yr at the eastern center, west, western center and southern area contiguous on the coastline of the study area during the period from September 2002 to April 2007. In addition, the RADARSAT-1 average displacement map has been compared with the total displacement map observed by accurate magnetic probe extensometer during the period from 2001 to 2002. Since the time series displacement has shown a linear trend mostly, we consider that continuous monitoring should be needed until the ground subsidence of the study area has been stabilized.

  • Most laboratory test research has focused on grouting efficiency in homogeneous reconstituted soft clay. However, the natural sedimentary soils generally behave differently from reconstituted soils due to the effect of soil structure. A series of laboratory grouting tests were conducted to research the effect of soil structure on the performance of compensation grouting. The effects of grouting volume, overlying load and grouting location on the performance of compensation grouting under different soil structures were also studied. Reconstituted soil was altered with added cement to simulate artificial structured soil. The results showed that the final grouting efficiency was positive and significantly increased with the increase of stress ratio within a certain range when grouting in normally consolidated structured clay. However, in the same low yield stress situation, the artificial structured soil had a lower final grouting efficiency than the overconsolidated reconstituted soil. The larger of normalized grouting volume could increase the final grouting efficiency for both reconstituted and artificial structured soils. Whereas, the effect of the overlying load on final grouting efficiencies was unfavourable, and was independent of the stress ratio. As for the layered soil specimens, grouting in the artificial structured soil layer was the most efficient. In addition, the peak grouting pressure was affected by the stress ratio and the overlying load, and it could be predicted with an empirical equation when the overlying load was less than the yield stress. The end time of primary consolidation and the proportion of secondary consolidation settlement varied with the different soil structures, grouting volumes, overlying loads and grouting locations.

  • The following is the result of experiment on consolidation test under various load increment ratios by alternation of standard load increment ratio. The more load increment ratio was, the more settlement was resulted. But expansions were not associated with load increment ratios. Primary consolidation took longer period to complete as load increment ratio was decreased. And under the condition of over-consolidated range, the completion of primary consolidation took longer period as the load was incremented. Under the condition of normal consolidated range, there was no change in time of completing primary consolidation. The coefficient of consolidation was decreased with increment of consolidation load, and the coefficient of consolidation had high values as the load increment ratio was increased. The values of ratio of secondary consolidation was highest near the transition point of consolidation curve.

  • Experiments both in laboratory and field were performed to compare and analyze the characteristics of alluvial clay. The alluvial clay was sampled in test site in which large-scaled tests for the part of the site are under process to suggest the rational method for alluvial clay and the criterion for ground settlement monitoring system. The followings were observed through the experiments : 1. Natural water content, plastic limit, and liquid limit of alluvial clay composed of highly fine grains were 40~80%, 10~20%, and 30~55%, respectively. The values of these properties were relatively small at the ground surface, while the values showed maximum at G.L.- l0m and gradually decreased below the level. 2. Shear strength of alluvial clay was proportionally increased to the depth. Unconfined and triaxial compressive strengths were 0.2~0.6kgf/$cm^2$ and 0.1~0.3kgf/$cm^2$, respectively. 3. Compression index and secondary compression index showed maximum values at G.L.-l0m and gradually decreased below the level. The value of consolidation coefficient was relatively large at the ground surface, constant with decreasing the depth, and incresed when G.L. was below -20m. 4. Piezocone test appeared that alluvial clay with N value of 2~4 was uniformly distributed with 20~ 30m thickness from the ground surface, sand seam was nonuniformly distributed, and penetration pore pressure was 0.8 ~ 1 times of the hydrostatic pressure. Undrained shear strength and consolidation coefficient were 0.04 ~ 0.76kgf / $cm^2$ and $2.88{\times} 10{^-4}~1.3{\times} 10{^-2} cm^2/s$ respectively.
