  • Kinetic studies on the reactions of five secondary acylic alkyl arenesulfonates with anilines are carried out in acetonitrile at 65.0 ℃. The magnitude of ρXZ determined (ρXZ=0.12-0.13) is slightly greater than that for the alicyclic series (ρXZ=0.11) under the same experimental condition. Ab initio MO results are found to support the slightly tighter transition state expected from the greater magnitude of ρXZ for the acyclic series. Despite the small variations, the magnitude of ρXZ and the theoretical transition state tightness remain relatively constant for the secondary carbon centers. Secondary kinetic isotope effects involving deuterated aniline nucleophiles show a successively smaller kH/kD(<1.0) value for a more sterically crowded reaction center carbon. This is in accord with the later transition state for bond-making predicted by the Bell-Evans-Polanyi principle for the more endothermic nucleophilic substitution reaction. Further support is provided by the results of the AM1 MO calculations on the reactions of secondary alkyl benzenesulfonates with chloride nucleophile.

  • In order to elucidate the formation of reaction tissues during the transition from primary to secondary growth, the developmental anatomy was conducted in the first internode of Ginkgo biloba seedling in horizontal position. The righting of the horizontal first internode took place at the middle portion and gradually proceeded to the base during the primary growth. Reaction tissues were formed corresponding to the righting movement in the horizontal first internode. During the transition from primary to secondary growth, compression wood was gradually developed on the lower side only. The anatomical features of compression wood also extended longitudinally to the lower side of the vertical portion where it coincided with the lower side of the horizontal first internode occurs acropetally from basal to apical portion. Eventually, some of the anatomical features of compression wood occurred at the primary growth. And the typical compression wood is gradually established during the secondary growth. On the other hand, the lower side tracheid and ray were longer and higher than those of the upper side in the horizontal first internode. However, difference in the width of ray was not observed between the lower and upper sides.

  • This paper presents the analysis of the analysis of thrust characteristics of linear induction motors(LIMs) according to secondary reaction plate. LIMs are well known as high speed transport systems, which can obtain thrust directly without gears and links, or auxiliary mechanisms. A simple structure, easy maintenance, and less environmental pollution are advantages of LIMs. In transport systems using LIMs, the secondary reaction plate is an important design factor, because it has considerable impact on the cost of the railway as well as the performance of the LIMs.

  • Among the hazardous air pollutions(HAPs), characteristics of secondary organic aerosols are not well understood. In this study, the current state for the measurement and analysis of representative secondary PAHs such as oxy-PAHs and nitro-PAHs are presented with the discussion of their toxicity. Also, further research directions for the secondary PAHs are suggested. It was found that the chemical reaction mechanisms and products of PAHs in the air are poorly identified and their toxicities are not well studied. Moreover ambient concentrations of those secondary PAHs are not well documented. Sampling methodologies of those secondary PAHs are similar with PAHs but the analytical protocols for those secondary PAHs are more complicated than PAHs. Future management directions are suggested along with future research directions.

  • Marine natural products with various bioactivities are featured with similar structure to the common secondary metabolites and generally modified by halogenides, such as chloride, bromide, and iodide ions. Vanadium haloperoxidase is a key enzyme for the production of marine natural products and a metalloenzyme which requires a cofactor of vanadate. This review will cover isolation of vanadium haloperoxidase and the protein structures, as well as reaction mechanism of the metalloenzyme. Finally, reactivity of vanadium haloperoxidase and the biosynthesis of the secondary metabolites of indole, terpenoids, and acetogenins will be described.

  • Human performance of system control under excessive mental-workload may differ from stable situation. In this study, design guidelines of secondary control system were introduced to enhance performance of safety control system. Under urgent situation, the first performance criterion is not a reaction time but safe control reaction that prevents system disaster. Therefore it is important to find out the facts that are mainly related system safety. Experimental results show performance of primary task didn't reflect whole system influence within a limited short reaction time. In this situation, the secondary task is more sensitive to system influence that varied with some factors of urgent status. Therefore, when a system proceeds to abnormal and unsafe status, and even more the reaction time is limited within a very short time to control the system, the estimation of human performance is more sensitive using secondary task performance then primary task performance. Those results mean it is required to develop various secondary tasks to design safety control systems preventing disaster, And also require many studies of estimation methods human performances especially when system status varies dangerous and/or unsafe situation.

  • The use of photo-catalytic processes in pollution abatement and resource has a significant economic importance. Therefore, the applications of photochemical oxidation of secondary effluent driven by UV, TiO2, TiO2/UV, H2O2/UV and TiO2/H2O2/UV, have been investigated in order to treat the secondary effluent from municipal sewage. Various experimental parameters such as BOD, CODcr, Nurbidity, total P, and SPC were examined in each photo-catalytic reaction system. The results showed that the application of single oxidant such as UV, TiO2 only has a minor effect on parameters reduction (CODcr, BOD, etc) to treat the secondary effluent, whereas the combinations of oxidants increase the removal efficiency. The best removal efficiency in every parameters was achieved by the combination of TiO2, H2O2 and UV. It was also found that the optimum amount of TiO2 for the treatment was 1g/ι to achieve water reuse standard. From the results, the photocatalytic reaction system can be an alternative as a post-treatment to treat the secondary effluent from municipal sewage.

  • TiO2 fine powders were synthesized using oxygenolysis and hydrolysis reaction of TiCl4 vapor in gas phase. The TiO2 powder synthesized showed morphological differences depending on reaction system as follows: TiCl4-O2 reaction system produced the monosized particles having polyhedral shape with well-defined crystal planes and the particles did not agglomerate into secondary particles. TiCl4-H2O reaction system, whereas, produced the spherical secondary particles which consisted of fine primary particles. Other powder characteristics such as particle size, impurity content and rutile content are also reported in this study.

  • In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to elucidate the structural variation of $\alpha-MoO_3$ electrode upon discharge/charge reaction in a lithium ion battery. According to the XAS analysis, hexavalent Mo atoms in $\alpha-MoO_3$ framework are reduced as the amount of intercalated lithium ions increases. As lithium de-intercalation proceeds, most of pre-edge peaks are restored again. However, according to the Fourier transforms of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra, lithium de-intercalation reaction is partially irreversible upon the charge reaction, which is one of the main reasons why the capacity of $\alpha-MoO_3$ electrode decreases upon successive discharge/charge cycles.
