PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF COGNITIVE NETWORK WITH PRIMARY AND SECONDARY CHANNELS

  • We consider a cognitive network with a primary and a secondary channel. Primary users have higher priority on the usage of the primary channel, and secondary users are allowed to opportunistically access the primary channel at times when the channel is not occupied by primary users. The secondary channel is dedicated only to secondary users. An analytical model is presented to obtain the performance of an opportunistic spectrum access using both the primary and secondary channels, and is validated by simulations.

  • In this paper, a technique is proposed that enables secondary users to evaluate channel availability in cognitive radio networks. Here, secondary users estimate the utilization of channels via predicting the traffic pattern of primary user, and select a proper channel for radio transmission. The proposed technique reduces the channel switching rate of secondary users (the rate of switching from one channel to another) and the interference on primary users, while maintaining a reasonable call blocking rate of secondary users.

  • In this paper, we consider a cognitive radio system operating as secondary user. It uses an empty channel that is not currently used by primary users having the license to the channel. In the previous works, secondary user looks for an empty channel by choosing any channel in order or randomly and by sensing the channel to distinguish whether primary users are using. But if primary user is fixed type, we will find an empty channel faster than the mentioned channel selecting methods by using a method considering prior information about cases that primary user used the channel, since it is possible to analogize the channel access possibility of primary user according to regular time and position. Therefore, we propose a channel searching method based on the channel list for the purpose of reducing the channel searching time and improving throughput of secondary users. Firstly, we determine a weighting value of each channel based on the history of channel activities of primary users. This value is added to current channel state buffer and we search an empty channel from channel with smallest value to one with the biggest value. Finally, we compare the performances of the proposed method with those of the sequential channel searching and the random channel searching methods in terms of the average channel searching time and the average number of transmissions of secondary user.

  • In this paper, we consider an independent type cognitive radio system where secondary users can utilize empty channels that are not currently used by primary users having the license to these channels. In the previous works, secondary users search channels sequently or randomly to detect activities of primary user on channels. These channel searching methods however are not suitable to the characteristics of the wireless environment. Therefore, we propose a channel searching method based on the channel list for the purpose of reducing the channel searching time and improving the throughput of secondary users. In the proposed method, we firstly determine weighting value of each channel based on the history of channel activities of primary users and add the weighing value to current channel state buffer. And then, we search an empty channel from channel with smallest value to one with the biggest value. Finally, we compare the performances of the proposed method with those of the sequential channel searching and the random channel searching methods in terms of average channel searching time and average number of transmissions of secondary user.

  • A dynamic spectrum access scheme with channel partitioning for secondary handover calls in cognitive radio networks is proposed to reduce forced termination probability due to spectrum handover failure. A continuous-time Markov chain method for evaluating its performance such as blocking probability, forced termination probability, and throughput is presented. Numerical and simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme with channel partitioning.

Adaptive Spectrum Sensing for Throughput Maximization of Cognitive Radio Networks in Fading Channels

  • In this paper, we investigate an adaptive cognitive radio (CR) scheme where a sensing duration and a detection threshold for spectrum sensing are adaptively determined according to the channel condition in a fading channel. We optimize the sensing duration and detection threshold of a secondary user to maximize the performance of the secondary user guaranteeing a primary user's secure communication. In addition, we analyze the effect of channel fading on the optimization of the sensing duration and detection threshold. Our numerical results show that the performance of the adaptive CR scheme can be drastically improved if a secondary user can take the advantage of channel information between primary and secondary users.

Analysis of Generating Mechanism of Secondary Flows in Turbulent Open-Channel Flows using DNS Data (DNS 자료를 이용한 개수로에서 이차흐름의 생성메커니즘 분석)

  • Using DNS data for turbulent flows in an open-channel with sidewalls, the mechanisms by which secondary flows are generated and by which Reynolds shear stresses are created, are demonstrated. Near the sidewall, secondary flows invading towards the sidewall are observed in the regions of both lower and upper corners, while secondary flows ejecting from the sidewall towards the center of the channel are created elsewhere. The distributions of Reynolds shear stresses near the sidewall are analyzed, connecting their productions with coherent structures. A quadrant analysis shows that sweeps are dominant in two corner regions where secondary flows invading towards the sidewall are generated, but that ejections are dominant in the region where secondary flows ejecting towards the center of the channel are created. Also, conditional quadrant analyses reveal that the productions of Reynolds shear stresses and the patterns of secondary flows are determined by the directional tendencies of coherent structures.

  • The conversion efficiency of a cesium iodine coated micro-channel plate is studied. We use the EGS4 code to transport photons and generated electrons until their energies become less than 1keV and 10keV respectively. Among the generated electrons, the emission from the secondary electrons located within the escape depth of 56nm from the photo-converter boundary is estimated by integrating the product of the secondary electrons with a probability depending only on their geometric locations. The secondary electron emission from the generated electrons of energy higher than 100eV is estimated by the 'universal yield curve'. The sum of these provides an estimate for the secondary electron yield and we show that results of applying this algorithm agree with known experimental results. Using this algorithm, we computed secondary electron emissions from a micro-channel plate used in a gas electron multiplier detector that is currently being developed at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute.

  • An efficient stochastic channel selection algorithm for cognitive radio networks is proposed and analyzed in this paper. With the new algorithm utilizing quality of channels, the stationary level of the channels in idle state and history performance, we can find the best channel for secondary users to transmit data. Moreover, this method not only restricts channel switching of secondary users but also adapts to random resource environment of cognitive radio network. The advantages of the proposed algorithm are demonstrated clearly through computer simulation.

  • Cognitive radio MAC protocol should allow secondary users to access unused or under-utilized spectrum without interference to primary users. For cognitive MAC protocol, one of the important issues is how to select the channel opportunities for secondary users. In this paper, we propose a novel cognitive MAC protocol to allocate channel opportunities for the secondary users based on the prediction of future availability. The proposed MAC protocol can reduce the interference to primary users and increase throughput using multiple channels.
