This study was conducted to establish a systematized taxonomic problems of through the leaf morphological characters and leaf venation patterns, and stomatal cell patterns and cell characteristics of abaxial and adaxial surface of the leaflets by SEM, of 6 native species in Korea and 2 foreign species of the Genus Rhus in the Family Anacardiaceae. The results obtained from this study are summarized as followings: 1. Morphological study measured 32 characters of leaves from herbarium specimen and field-collected samples for each species. The results of cluster analysis based on the Euclidean distance showed that the species could be classified into 3 groups: R. sylvestris. R. typhina, R. succedanea: R. trichocarpa. R. chinensis. R. verniciflua: and R. ambigua. R. radicans subsp. orientale, Analysis of principal components showed 5 groups: The major factors in the first principal component group was length of petiole of the terminal leaflets, that in the second group angle of left side in the terminal leaflet bash, that in the third group area ratio between first and terminal leaflets, that in the forth group angle ratio between right and left side in the terminal leaflet base, and that in the fifth group was angle of main and secondary vein at midrib of terminal leaflet. Cumulative contribution by the first, second and third principal component group was explained with 82.6%, a large percent of all information. 2. The leaf venation pattern investigated using soft X-ray photography revealed clado-and reticulo-camptodromous types according to branching angle of the secondary vein. And three groups by the developing degree of secondary vein were R. trichocarpa, R. ambigua. R. chinensis, R. typhina; R. radicans subsp. onentale, R. succedanea, R. verniciflua: and R. sylvestris. Classification key for the Rhus of Korean-native Anacardiaceae was made by the venation pattern and devevoping degree of the secondary vein. 3. The stomatal cell patterns were greatly classified into paracytic and anomocytic types, specific among species according to stomatal and subsidiary cell patterns, and various differences among the species was determined. Microstructure of the adaxial and abaxial surfaces could be divided into synclinal and anticlinal cell wall patterns, and were specific-species. Stomatal cells of R. chinensis were surrounded with characterized villus-like cells.

For the sea-level performance test of rocket motor designed to operate in the upper atmosphere, ejectors with no induced secondary flow are generally used, which serves dual purposes of evacuating the test cell and performing as a supersonic exhaust diffuser (SED). The main concern of this research is to simulate starting transients in order to visualize evolution of internal shock structures in SED with different initial cell (vacuum chamber) pressures. RANS code with low Reynolds $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model was employed for these computations. Numerical results were compared with the pressure measurements previously performed [Proceedings of 2004 Annual Conference, KIMST], and showed good agreements with pressure-time history of measured data. In the case of low vacuum chamber pressure, abrupt impingement of the under-expanded supersonic jet from the nozzle onto the diffuser wall was observed, whereas initial impingement point was located downstream and moved slowly upstream in the case of non-vacuum chamber pressure. In spite of initially dissimilar evolution of shock structures, iso-mach contour revealed that the steady shock structures had little difference except the location of flow separation and normal shock.
Present work was undertaken to investigate the origin of milled wood lignin(MWL) in the wood cell wall using immunocytochemical techniques, which can provide the information on the localization of specific antigens(MWL in the present study) to be examined. Spruce MWL dissolved in DMSO and emulsified with Freund adjuvant was injected directly into the mouse spleen. The animals were boostered at two-week intervals after the initial immunization. Blood samples were purified in standard procedures. The characteristics of antibodies against MWL were tested by indirect ELISA. Visualization of MWL was carried out using conventional indirect immunogold-labelling methods on the ultrathin sections of spruce wood. Immuno-TEM observations showed that the immunogold probes were selectively attached to secondary cell walls of spruce wood. The most intense labelling was frequently observed in the S2 layer. In contrast, gold labelling in the lignin-rich regions, such as middle lamella and cell corner was not found. The immuno-TEM provides an indication that spruce MWL originates from the S2 layer.

A time-iterative compressible Navier-Stokes code is developed to analyze the flowfield of a two-dimensional ejector nozzle system. A parametric study has been made for two controlling parameters, duct to nozzle area ratio and nozzle pressure ratio. Results show that there is an optimum area ratio for an efficient pumping of secondary flow. At high area ratios, a freestream flow directly passes through the mixing duct without giving adequate pumping. While at low area ratios, jet boundary is acting as a blockage to incoming flow. The nozzle pressure ratio variation shows that the pumping rate increases as the pressure ratio increases provided there is no interaction between the shroud wall and the shock cell structure.

Fine grid calculations are reported for the developing turbulent flow in a curved duct of square cross-section with a radius of curvature to hydraulic diameter ratio ${\delta}=Rc/D_H=3.357 $ and a bend angle of 720 deg. A sequence of modeling refinements is introduced; the replacement of wall function by a fine mesh across the sublayer and a low Reynolds number algebraic second moment closure up to the near wall sublayer in which the non-linear return to isotropy model and the cubic-quasi-isotropy model for the pressure strain are adopted; and the introduction of a multiple source model for the exact dissipation rate equation. Each refinement is shown to lead to an appreciable improvement in the agreement between measurement and computation.
The three-dimensional turbulent flow in curved pipes susceptible to flow-accelerated corrosion has been analyzed numerically to predict the pressure and shear stress distributions on the inner surface of the pipes. The analysis employs the body-fitted non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system and a standard $ {\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model with wall function method. The finite volume method is used to discretize the governing equations. The convection term is approximated by a high-resolution and bounded discretization scheme. The cell-centered, non-staggered grid arrangement is adopted and the resulting checkerboard pressure oscillation is prevented by the application of a modified version of momentum interpolation scheme. The SIMPLE algorithm is employed for the pressure and velocity coupling. The numerical calculations have been performed for two curved pipes with different bend angles and curvature radii, and discussions have been made on the distributions of the primary and secondary flow velocities, pressure and shear stress on the inner surface of the pipe to examine applicability of the present analysis method. As the result it is seen that the method is effective to predict the susceptible systems or their local areas where the fluid velocity or local turbulence is so high that the structural integrity can be threatened by wall thinning degradation due to flow-accelerated corrosion.
The characteristics of the fluid flow and mass transfer in a vertical atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) are numerically studied. In order to get the optimal process parameters for the uniformity of deposition on a substrate, Navier-Stokes and energy equations have been solved for the pressure, mass-flow rate and temperature distribution in a CVD reactor. Results show that the thermal boundary condition at the reactor wall has an important effect in the formation of buoyancy-driven secondary cell when radiation effect is considered. Results also show that reduction of the buoyancy effect on the heated reactor improves the uniformity of deposition.
In this study, the vegetative and reproductive morphology and anatomy of two Hawaiian endemic Portulaca species were examined. Specifically, P. molokiniensis and P. sclerocarpa were compared to closely related species in the genus. The comparisons were both qualitative and quantitative, using characteristics of leaves, stems, roots, and fruits. Tissue organizations of vegetative and reproductive parts of the plants were assessed using microtechnique procedures, statistical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The most notable features of these two species were (1) the size and frequency of stomata in P. molokiniensis, and (2) the large number of sclerenchymatous cell layers in the thickest fruit walls of P. sclerocarpa. These findings may imply that stomata development in P. molokiniensis and thick fruit wall development in P. sclerocarpa are evolved features of survival. In particular, the development of thickened walls in indehiscent fruits likely has evolutionary implications of ecological tolerance for better adaptation.
In order to investigate the effects of various injection hole shapes on the film cooling of turbine blade, three test models having cylindrical and shaped holes were used. A three-dimensional Navier-Stokes code with standard k-$\epsilon$ model was used to compute the film cooling coefficient on the film cooled turbine blade. Over 330,000 grids were used to compute the flow over the blade. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $7.1{\times}10^4$. The turbulence intensity kept at $5.0\%$ for all inlets. The effect of coolant blowing ratio was studied for various blowing ratios. For each blowing ratios, wall temperatures around the surface of test model were calculated. Temperature was visualized using cartesian cut-cell method to obtain traces of the injected secondary air on the test surface, so we could interpret the film effectiveness as temperature distributions.
Fungal sectorization is a complex trait that is still not fully understood. The unique phenotypic changes in sporadic sectorization in mutants of CpBck1, a mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase (MAPKKK) gene, and CpSlt2, a mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) gene, in the cell wall integrity pathway of the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica have been previously studied. Although several environmental and physiological factors cause this sectoring phenotype, genetic variants can also impact this complex morphogenesis. Therefore, RNA sequencing analysis was employed to identify candidate genes associated with sectorization traits and understand the genetic mechanism of this phenotype. Transcriptomic analysis of CpBck1 and CpSlt2 mutants and their sectored progeny strains revealed a number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to various cellular processes. Approximately 70% of DEGs were common between the wild-type and each of CpBck1 and CpSlt2 mutants, indicating that CpBck1 and CpSlt2 are components of the same MAPK pathway, but each component governs specific sets of genes. Functional description of the DEGs between the parental mutants and their sectored progenies revealed several key pathways, including the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, translation, amino acid metabolism, and carbohydrate metabolism; among these, pathways for secondary metabolism and translation appeared to be the most common pathway. The results of this comparative study provide a better understanding of the genetic regulation of sector formation and suggest that complex several regulatory pathways result in interplays between secondary metabolites and morphogenesis.
