• The damage of a thin film of Rd6G dye was probed by Surface Second-Harmonic Generation(SSHG) method. A portion of the Rd6G thin film on glass substrate was damaged by 532 nm laser beam, and the damage was probed by detecting intensity variation of SSHG. The result was confirmed through direct observation with optical microscope.oscope.

  • In order to investigate the surface SHG, (110) pure STO single crystals were exposed to a reducing atmosphere to induce the reduction of the Ti ion and the release of oxygen from the lattice compensating the reduction of the Ti ions. The anisotropy and asymmetry of SHG intensity explains a slight shrinkage. The incoming fundamental wave was polarized either in the $p$-in or $s$-in to the plane of incidence for the reflection geometry. The SH polarization diagram could be described by the electric dipole and/or quadrupole contribution of reduced STO single crystal surface.

  • In this paper we derive some optimal convex combination bounds related to arithmetic mean. We find the greatest values ${\alpha}_1$ and ${\alpha}_2$ and the least values ${\beta}_1$ and ${\beta}_2$ such that the double inequalities $${\alpha}_1T(a,b)+(1-{\alpha}_1)H(a,b)<A(a,b)<{\beta}_1T(a,b)+(1-{\beta}_1)H(a,b)$$ and $${\alpha}_2T(a,b)+(1-{\alpha}_2)G(a,b)<A(a,b)<{\beta}_2T(a,b)+(1-{\beta}_2)G(a,b)$$ holds for all a,b > 0 with $a{\neq}b$. Here T(a,b), H(a,b), A(a,b) and G(a,b) denote the second Seiffert, harmonic, arithmetic and geometric means of two positive numbers a and b, respectively.

  • The nonlinearity parameter is frequently measured as a sensitive indicator in damaged material characterization or tissue harmonic imaging. Several previous studies have employed the plane wave solution, and ignored the effects of beam diffraction when measuring the non-linearity parameter ${\beta}$. This paper presents a multi-Gaussian beam approach to explicitly derive diffraction corrections for fundamental and second harmonics under quasilinear and paraxial approximation. Their effects on the nonlinearity parameter estimation demonstrate complicated dependence of ${\beta}$ on the transmitter-receiver geometries, frequency, and propagation distance. The diffraction effects on the non-linearity parameter estimation are important even in the nearfield region. Experiments are performed to show that improved ${\beta}$ values can be obtained by considering the diffraction effects.

  • Intracavity second harmonic generation of diode pumped solid state lasers in the visible and ultraviolet regions provide efficient, compact and robust light sources for various applications, such as optical data storage, material processing, spectroscopy and bioanalysis. Advantages of neodymium vanadate (Nd:$YVO_4$) as a gain medium for intracavity-doubled lasers over Nd:YAG lie in the facts that the gain spectrum consists of a single line with short absorption depth, and that the stimulated emission cross sections are larger. • SHG (Second harmonic generation) can be used to probe the surface of centrosymmetric particles suspended in bulk isotropic solution, because it is forbidden in centrosymmetric media under the dipole approximation. Using this technique, we can study the transport dynamics of small organic dye molecules across liposome bilayers. Because molecules adsorbed on the outer layer are in opposite direction with that on the inner layer by symmetry, the SH field is proportional to the difference between the number density of dye molecules on both sides of the bilayer, and the time dependence of the SH intensity is related to the time constant of the molecular transportation of dye molecules across liposome bilayers.

  • A study on the dynamic vibration absorber with coil spring and oil damper was carried out both theoretically and experimentally. A main mass is attached to a foundation using coil spring and oil damper. A harmonic motion was applied to the foundation. The effects of the dynamic vibration sbsorber are theoretically summarized in graphs, and tested on a vibratory model for the isolation of actual mechanical vibration. As a result, the first resonance amplitude ratio increased and the second resonance amplitude ratio decreased as the absorber spring constant increased. When the absorber mass increase, the first resonance amplitude ratio is decreased and the second resonace amplitude ratio is increased.

  • A 1.9-GHz linear CMOS power amplifier is presented. An adaptive bias circuit (ABC) that utilizes an AC ground to detect the power level of the input signal is proposed to enhance the linearity and efficiency of the power amplifier. The ABC utilizes the second harmonic component as the input to mitigate the distortion of the fundamental signal. The input power level of the ABC was detected at the AC ground located at the VDD node of the power amplifier. The output of the ABC was fed into the inputs of the power stage. The input signal distortion was mitigated by detecting the input power level at the AC ground. The power amplifier was designed using a 180 nm RFCMOS process to evaluate the feasibility of the application of the proposed ABC in the power amplifier. The measured output power and power-added efficiency were improved by 1.7 dB and 2.9%, respectively.

  • The present study aims to investigate the feasibility of using a simple nonlinear acoustic method for the assessment of bone status and osteoporosis in trabecular bone. Correlations of linear and nonlinear ultrasound parameters with the apparent bone density were obtained in 32 bovine femoral trabecular bone samples. Highly significant positive correlations were observed between the apparent bone density and the two linear ultrasound parameters, the speed of sound (SOS) and the normalized broadband ultrasound attenuation (nBUA), with Spearman's correlation coefficients of r = 0.85 and 0.77. In contrast, the apparent bone density was found to be negatively correlated with the nonlinear ultrasound parameter introduced in the present study, the logarithmic difference between the power spectrum levels of the fundamental frequency and the second harmonic (PSL1-PSL2), with the highest correlation coefficient of r = -0.92. These results suggest that the PSL1-PSL2, in addition to the SOS and the nBUA, may be useful for the assessment of bone status and osteoporosis.
