A design method of second generation wavelet (SGW)-based multivariable finite elements is proposed for static and vibration beam analysis. An important property of SGWs is that they can be custom designed by selecting appropriate lifting coefficients depending on the application. The SGW-based multivariable finite element equations of static and vibration analysis of beam problems with two and three kinds of variables are derived based on the generalized variational principles. Compared to classical finite element method (FEM), the second generation wavelet-based multivariable finite element method (SGW-MFEM) combines the advantages of high approximation performance of the SGW method and independent solution of field functions of the MFEM. A multiscale algorithm for SGW-MFEM is presented to solve structural engineering problems. Numerical examples demonstrate the proposed method is a flexible and accurate method in static and vibration beam analysis.
Viscoelastic sandwich structures (VSSs) are widely used in mechanical equipment, but in the service process, they always suffer from aging which affect the whole performance of equipment. Therefore, aging state recognition of VSSs is significant to monitor structural state and ensure the reliability of equipment. However, non-stationary vibration response signals and weak state change characteristics make this task challenging. This paper proposes a novel method for this task based on adaptive second generation wavelet packet transform (ASGWPT) and multiwavelet support vector machine (MWSVM). For obtaining sensitive feature parameters to different structural aging states, the ASGWPT, its wavelet function can adaptively match the frequency spectrum characteristics of inspected vibration response signal, is developed to process the vibration response signals for energy feature extraction. With the aim to improve the classification performance of SVM, based on the kernel method of SVM and multiwavelet theory, multiwavelet kernel functions are constructed, and then MWSVM is developed to classify the different aging states. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, different aging states of a VSS are created through the hot oxygen accelerated aging of viscoelastic material. The application results show that the proposed method can accurately and automatically recognize the different structural aging states and act as a promising approach to aging state recognition of VSSs. Furthermore, the capability of ASGWPT in processing the vibration response signals for feature extraction is validated by the comparisons with conventional second generation wavelet packet transform, and the performance of MWSVM in classifying the structural aging states is validated by the comparisons with traditional wavelet support vector machine.
A novel finite element (FE) model updating method based on multi-resolution analysis (MRA) is proposed. The true stiffness of the FE model is considered as the superposition of two pieces of stiffness information of different resolutions: the pre-defined stiffness information and updating stiffness information. While the resolution of former is solely decided by the meshing density of the FE model, the resolution of latter is decided by the limited information obtained from the experiment. The latter resolution is considerably lower than the former. Second generation wavelet is adopted to describe the updating stiffness information in the framework of MRA. This updating stiffness in MRA is realized at low level of resolution, therefore, needs less number of updating parameters. The efficiency of the optimization process is thus enhanced. The proposed method is suitable for the identification of multiple irregular cracks and performs well in capturing the global features of the structural damage. After the global features are identified, a refinement process proposed in the paper can be carried out to improve the performance of the MRA of the updating information. The effectiveness of the method is verified by numerical simulations of a box girder and the experiment of a three-span continues pre-stressed concrete bridge. It is shown that the proposed method corresponds well to the global features of the structural damage and is stable against the perturbation of modal parameters and small variations of the damage.

In this study, we develop a method for recognizing face images by combining wavelet decomposition, fisherface method, and fuzzy integral. The proposed approach comprises of four main stages. The first stage uses the wavelet decomposition. As a result of this decomposition, we obtain four subimages. The second stage of the approach applies a fisherface method to these four subimage sets. The two last phases are concerned with the generation of the degree of fuzzy membership and the aggregation of the individual classifiers by means of the fuzzy integral. The experimental results obtained for the CNU and Yale face databases reveal that the approach presented in this study yields better classification performance in comparison to the results produced by other classifiers.

The lifting scheme has been found to be a flexible method for constructing scalar wavelets with desirable properties. In this paper, it is extended to the UDAR data compression. A newly developed data compression approach to approximate the UDAR surface with a series of non-overlapping triangles has been presented. Generally a Triangulated Irregular Networks (TIN) are the most common form of digital surface model that consists of elevation values with x, y coordinates that make up triangles. But over the years the TIN data representation has become an important research topic for many researchers due its large data size. Compression of TIN is needed for efficient management of large data and good surface visualization. This approach covers following steps: First, by using a Delaunay triangulation, an efficient algorithm is developed to generate TIN, which forms the terrain from an arbitrary set of data. A new interpolation wavelet filter for TIN has been applied in two steps, namely splitting and elevation. In the splitting step, a triangle has been divided into several sub-triangles and the elevation step has been used to 'modify' the point values (point coordinates for geometry) after the splitting. Then, this data set is compressed at the desired locations by using second generation wavelets. The quality of geographical surface representation after using proposed technique is compared with the original UDAR data. The results show that this method can be used for significant reduction of data set.

In this paper we review techniques for building and analyzing wavelets on irregular point sets in one and two dimensions. In particular we focus on subdivision schemes and commutation. Subdivision means the skill that approximates the initial lines or mesh into a tender curve or a curved surface by continuous partitioning operation. The key to generalizing wavelet constructions to non-traditional settings is the use of generalized subdivision. The first generation setting is already connected with subdivision schemes, but they become even more important in the construction of second generation wavelets. Subdivision schemes provide fast algorithms, create a natural multi-resolution structure, and yield the underlying scaling functions and wavelets we seek.
This study employs a novel beam-type wavelet finite element model (WFEM) to fulfill an adaptive-scale damage detection strategy in which structural modeling scales are not only spatially varying but also dynamically changed according to actual needs. Dynamical equations of beam structures are derived in the context of WFEM by using the second-generation cubic Hermite multiwavelets as interpolation functions. Based on the concept of modal strain energy, damage in beam structures can be detected in a progressive manner: the suspected region is first identified using a low-scale structural model and the more accurate location and severity of the damage can be estimated using a multi-scale model with local refinement in the suspected region. Although this strategy can be implemented using traditional finite element methods, the multi-scale and localization properties of the WFEM considerably facilitate the adaptive change of modeling scales in a multi-stage process. The numerical examples in this study clearly demonstrate that the proposed damage detection strategy can progressively and efficiently locate and quantify damage with minimal computation effort and a limited number of sensors.
In this paper, an algorithm to compensate the distorted signals due to Current Transformer(CT) saturation is suggested, First, DWT which can be easily realized by filter banks in real-time applications is used to detect a start point and an end point of the saturation. Secondly, For enough Datas those need to use the least-square curve fitting method, the distorted current signal is compensated by the AR(autoregressive) model using the data during the previous healthy section until pick point of Saturation. Thirdly, the least-square curve fitting method is used to restore the distorted section of the secondary current. Finaly, this algorithm had a Hadware test using DSP board(TMS320C32) with Doble test device. DWT has superior detection accuracy and the proposed compensation algorithm which shows very stable features under various levels of remanent flux in the CT core is also satisfactory. And this algorithm is more correct than a previous algorithm which is only using the LSQ fitting method. Also it can be used as a MU involving the compensation function that acquires the second data from CT and PT.
