  • A 1-MW vacuum feedthrough for the KSTAR ICRF antenna is fabricated and high power RF test is performed. It is designed to have two alumina $(Al_2O_3)$ ceramic cylinders and O-ring seal instead of a brazed seal for good mechanical and thermal strength, which is important in long pulse or steady state operation. For cooling of the ceramics, dry air is circulated in a space between the two cylinders and the outer conductor. Independent cooling water channels are installed to cool the inner conductor of the feedthrough. RF high voltage test is performed using two kinds of ceramics with the purities of 99.7% and 97%. Stable operation is possible with the RF voltage of 30 kVp at long pulse of 300 sec without any severe damage.

  • Elastomeric O-rings have been the most common seals due to their excellent sealing capacity, and availability in costs and sizes. One of the critical applications of O-ring seals is solid rocket motor joint seal where the operating hot gas must be sealed during the combustion. This has long been a design issue to avoid the system failure. For laterally constrained, squeezed and pressurized condition, deformed shape of O-ring was measured by computed tomography method and CCD laser sensor, compared with numerical calculations. As clearance gap changes, sealing performance had been evaluated on peak contact stresses at top, bottom and side contact surfaces. As clearance gap increases, peak contact stresses and contact widths in top and side contact surfaces increase, and the asymmetry of stress distributions is promoted due to pressure increase. It is suggested that peak stress of bottom contact surface can be approximated by simple superposition of peak ones due to squeeze and pressure. Under pressurized condition, sealing performance is dependent on not peak stresses of bottom and side contact surfaces but that of top.

  • The KN-12 transport cask has been designed to transport 12 PWR spent nuclear fuel assemblies and to comply with the regulatory requirements for a Type B(U) package. The containment boundary of the cask is defined by a cask body, a cask lid, lid bolts with nuts, O-ring seals and a bolted closure lid. The containment vessel for the cask consists of a forged thick-walled carbon steel cylindrical body with an integrally-welded carbon steel bottom and is closed by a lid made of stainless steel, which is fastened to the cask body by lid bolts with nuts and sealed by double elastomer O-rings. In the cask lid an opening is closed by a plug with an O-ring seal and covered by the bolted closure lid sealed with an O-ring. The cask must maintain a radioactivity release rate of not more than the regulatory limit for normal transport conditions and for hypothetical accident conditions, as required by the related regulations. The containment requirements of the cask are satisfied by maintaining a maximum air reference leak rate of $2.7{\times}10^{-4}ref.cm^3s^{-1}$ or a helium leak rate of $3.3{\times}10^{-4}cm^3s^{-1}$ for normal transport conditions and for hypothetical accident conditions.

  • A series of hydraulic and cavitation tests are performed in water environment in order to verify the hydraulic and cavitation performance of three types of LOX pumps. All the performances of the pumps are found to be satisfied with each design requirement. In the hydraulic tests, the head and efficiency are increased as the gap between floating ring seals and the impeller shoulder is decreased. In the cavitation tests, some pumps show decrease in the cavitation performance as the flowrate of the pump is decreased.

  • This study was performed to evaluate the dynamic behavior of turbo pump unit. The acceptable separate margin of $1^{st}$ critical speed was obtained by the use of elastic-ring inserted ball bearing, while the poor separate margin of $1^{\st}$ critical speed was appeared in the case without the elastic-ring. In addition, the results show that the stiffness and damping of plain seals give more separate margin of $2^{nd}$ critical speed. However the wear or the failure of seals could reduce the $2^{nd}$ critical speed near the operating speed.

  • The wheel bearing is one of the important parts in a vehicle for translating power and bearing weight. When it is mounted on the knuckle by using bolts, the distortion of the outer ring including the seal mounting point and raceway occurs. In this study, a numerical analysis was performed to analyze the distortion of the outer ring by using a finite element method. The commercial software MSC.MARC was used for this purpose. Elastoplastic and contact analysis were carried out to compute the clamping behavior of the outer ring, bolts, and knuckle. Because the concavity on the flange of the outer ring affects the deformation, its effect was considered. To verify the reliability of this study, the roundness of the outer ring was measured. The experimental results were comparatively in agreement with the computational results.

  • This paper provides a reference to determine the seal performance of metallic O-rings for a reactor pressure vessel (RPV). A nonlinear elastic-plastic model of an O-ring was constructed by the finite element method to analyze its intrinsic properties. It is also validated by experiments on scaled samples. The effects of the compression ratio, the geometrical parameters of the O-ring, and the structure parameters of the groove on the flange are discussed in detail. The results showed that the numerical analysis of the O-ring agrees well with the experimental data, the compression ratio has an important role in the distribution and magnitude of contact stress, and a suitable gap between the sidewall and groove can improve the sealing capability of the O-ring. After the optimization of the sealing structure, some key parameters of the O-ring (i.e., compression ratio, cross-section diameter, wall thickness, sidewall gap) have been recommended for application in megakilowatt class nuclear power plants. Furthermore, air tightness and thermal cycling tests were performed to verify the rationality of the finite element method and to reliably evaluate the sealing performance of a RPV.

  • The royal seal, in either gold or jade, is used to symbolize Joseon's royal family, and it is made up of a Bonu (a handle), Bosin (a body), Bomun (a letter inscribed on the seal), and Bosu (a string attached to the seal). The Bosu was designed to enhance the seal's dignity and facilitate convenient handling. Bosu consists of Kkeun-mog and Bangwool-sul (decorated with gilt paper), which are made of Bangwool, Bangwool-mog, and Sul. In this study, the form survey, color, material, and composition of 318 Bosu pieces from the Joseon Dynasty and Korean Empire produced from 1441 to 1928 were analyzed. As time passed, the strings on the seals became longer and thinner. Bangwool-mog disappeared from the mid-1800s, and a ring appeared at the end of the Sul. Most of the colors used were scarlet, but orange and purple were also identified. Although most of the Bosu are silk, five Bosu from the 1900s and one Bosu from the 1740s (likely replaced in the 1900s) are estimated to be rayon. The gilt paper's main chemical components used to decorate the Bangwool-sul vary according to age. Until the mid-1800s, gold (Au) was used for the Sul and Bangwool, but since the mid-1800s, gold (Au) and brass (Cu-Zn) were used for Sul and Bangwool, respectively, and then brass (Cu-Zn) was used for Sul and Bangwool. While the Bosu was a seal accessory, it can be used to identify changes in the manufacturing techniques and materials of the period.

  • The plasma resistances of nitrile curable perfluoro elastomer (NT PFE) and peroxide curable PFE (PO PFE) after exposing to $NF_3$ and $O_2$ remote plasmas were investigated by analyzing weight loss and morphology of O-ring made of PFE. The compounds were designed following the typical formulations of O-ring/seal which were applied in semiconductor and LCD production site. They were blended by an open roll mill, and then, O-ring was finally made by hot press molding and oven curing. The weight loss was calculated and morphology was observed for each atmosphere and temperature by a digital weighing machine and SEM. As results, it was confirmed the weight loss and related morphology were meaningfully different according to the cure type of PFE, filler system, and the species of remote plasma.

  • The effects of an impeller and floating ring seals on the performance of centrifugal pumps are investigated on the basis of their test results using water. The pumps are single-staged centrifugal pumps developed for 30-ton- and 75-ton-class liquid rocket engines, and are components of a turbopump that supplies propellants (liquid oxidizer and kerosene) to the combustion chamber. The exit width of the impellers and the numbers and exit angles of the impeller blades are found to have influences on the pump heads. In addition, the pumps have different efficiencies according to the gaps between the floating ring seals and the impellers, whereas the pump size seems to have less effect on the efficiency.
