Sleep and Fatigue Among Seafarers: The Role of Environmental Stressors, Duration at Sea and Psychological Capital

  • Background: Seafaring is an inherently stressful environment. Because working time and leisure time is spent in the same confined environment for a prolonged period of time, many stressors present in seafaring can also be conceived of as chronic. We explored the effects of duration at sea, seafaring experience, environmental stressors, and psychological capital (PsyCap) on the sleep quality and fatigue of seafarers. PsyCap is a construct that draws upon ideas from positive psychology and positive organizational behavior, and is intended to capture an individual's psychological capacities that can be developed and utilized for performance improvements. Methods: We collected survey data from a sample of seafarers working in the offshore re-supply industry (n = 402) and a sample of seafarers working on board combined passenger and cargo ships (n = 340). Results: PsyCap emerged as a robust predictor with statistically significant relations to fatigue and sleep quality in both samples. PsyCap also interacted with duration at sea in explaining fatigue in seafarers working on board the passenger and cargo ships. Seafarers on passenger and cargo ships also reported significantly higher levels of fatigue than those working in the offshore re-supply industry. Conclusion: Coupled with emerging research showing that PsyCap is trainable, our results suggest that maritime organizations could have much to gain by being cognizant of and developing routines for continually developing the PsyCap of their employees.

실습선의 거주위치 변경에 따른 수직가속도 저감에 관한 연구 (A Study on Decrease of Vertical Accelerations due to Changes in Location of the Habitation Division for Training Ship)

  • Research on ship motion and seasickness is recognized as the important research area to ensure the pleasant operative environment in addition to the research of operation safety of ship. In this paper, the motion performance in waves for the training ship Kaya of Pukyong National University is obtained by using the computer program based on Strip Method. To guarantee the pleasant seafaring in ocean, the vertical acceleration of ship motion is calculated according to the habitation division location in the ship. The results of calculation by changes of location of habitation division are compared with the guideline of MSI(Motion Sickness Incidence). The degree of motion sickness is shown and discussed through the comparison between calculated vertical acceleration spectrum and MSI guideline. To improve the safety of ship in motion and the pleasant seafaring in waves, the downtrend of seasickness ratio is needed by the decrease on vertical acceleration of the ship. Through the results in this paper, the relocation of both bridge and accommodation toward the aftship reduced the vertical acceleration and MSI.

  • The article assesses the level of navigation safety, in theoretical terms, defines the complexity of managing navigational risks in practice. The issues of assessing the navigational safety have been studied due to the importance and relevance of the issue in question, however, due to the great complexity of the problem under consideration, the article considers and indicates the directions for the development of the solution of the given direction, where, first of all, it became necessary to analyze the issue of assessing the levels of navigation risks when navigating vessels of various types in difficult navigation conditions.

  • In the article, an analysis of the factors was carried out, which injected into the efficiency of the function of navigation systems in the minds of unimportance. Carrying out analyzes allowing for the visibility of relevant direct adjustments to the effectiveness of the function Inertial navigation systems in the minds of non-value. The designation of the navigation system was assigned to a complex of navigation systems on ships processing of the vector of navigation parameters, so that they can be victorious in the control systems of the ship's collapse, and the safety of floating is safe.

  • The article defines the basic concepts: "election campaign", "social capital", "conversion of social capital"; the principles and methods of research of social capital conversion in election campaigns are studied; the process of using social capital in politics is defined; ways of converting social capital into politics are considered; the possibilities of converting social capital in election campaigns are described. Election campaigns have been found to be a successful form of social capital conversion. The ability to use social capital in the election campaign speaks of its high potential. Election campaigns are not an effective use of social capital.

항해계열 실습생의 승선실습 교육 만족도에 관한 실증연구 (An Empirical Study on the Cadets' Satisfaction about Shipboard Training)

  • It is one of the most important factors Seafarers Ducation Quality Assurance and Management in Higher Maritime Educational Institution. The educational process and result of Higher Maritime Educational Institution should be evaluated according to the 1995 Amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers(STCW), 1978. Actually above-mentioned evaluation is deemed to make foundation in order to enhance the efficiency of shipboard education by surveying the satisfaction of shipboard training for nautical part cadets by the group. In this paper, we carried out the questionnaire survey to study satisfactory value and the reason of dissatisfaction of 113 cadets being trained on board the Training Ship in Maritime College of Korea Maritime University(K. M. U.). The results were calculated by frequency and percentage ; the significance of difference among Department groups like Maritime Transportation Science, Maritime Police and Ship Operating Systems Engineering was analysed by $X^2$ inspection. The major results of above analysis were as follows : First training chance for dadets was very little for being overflowed on board the training ship of the K. M. U. Second, special type of Training Ship HANBADA and HANNARA made the adaptability to merchant vessel's handling restricted. Third, cadets could not manage ratings directly, therefore the education in regard to seafaring management was limited to the theoretical instruction which leads to the low level of satisfaction. And lastly, low value of satisfaction for Drydocking Education in Shipyard was caused by cadet's leaving the Training Ship on account of the safety problems including ship and cadets.

실습선의 선형 변화에 따른 멀미 지수 개선 연구 (A Study on the Improvement of MSI by Ship Hull Form Modification of the Training Ship)

  • 본 연구에서는 실습선 가야호를 대상으로 하여 파랑 중 운동성능을 평가하였다. 그리고 쾌적한 승선감을 확보하기 위하여 실제 해상에서 운항중인 선박의 선내 위치별 수직가속도 성분을 선체운동 계산 기법을 통해서 구하고, 수직가속도 스펙트럼을 이용하여 가야호의 선속변화에 따른 가속도 계산 결과를 뱃멀미 지수(MSI; Motion Sickness Incidence)의 가이드라인과 비교 검토하여 멀미의 정도를 표시하였다. MSI 계산 결과는 선속이 5 knots, 10 knots, 12 knots로 커지는 순서대로 수직가속도의 가중치가 높게 나타나며, 입사각은 $180^{\circ}$$150^{\circ}$에 비해 선수사파인 $120^{\circ}$의 경우에 수직가속도의 가중치가 높게 나타났다.

  • 글로벌승선실습(GOBT) 시범사업이 2021년 11월 17일부터 12월 17일까지 한달간 한국해양수산연수원(KIMFT)에서 시행되었다. 10일간의 자가격리, 5일간의 기초안전교육(BST) 및 2주간의 승선실습으로 시행되었는데, IMO 국제기술협력프로그램(ITCP)과 대한민국 공적개발원조(ODA) 자금지원을 받아 5개국으로부터 총 20명의 실습생이 참가하였다. 이 프로그램은 승선실습에 초점을 맞춘 역량강화 과정으로, 미래의 해기사들이 STCW 협약에서 요구하는 최소한의 해상경력을 갖출 수 있도록 지원하는데 있다. 또한 이 프로그램은 실습선을 이용하여 어떻게 승선실습을 효과적으로 시행하는지 모범사례를 공유하는 플랫폼으로서의 기능도 가지고 있다. GOBT 프로그램의 성과를 측정하기 위하여 설문조사를 실시한 바 평균 96.4 점을 받아, 2021년에 KIMFT에서 시행한 시범 승선실습에 참가한 실습생들의 만족도가 아주 높게 나왔다.
